[RP] Sea Lights
Tumblr media
(( Rating: PG-13 ))
(( Genre: Slice of Life, Romance ))
(( Trigger Warning: Crude language and mentions of sexual situations. ))
(( Cast: Emmaline Ibori of @the-firetouched and Nobuyuki Ienaka ))
Nobuyuki is fidgeting. With the bandages on his arm gone, he didn't have much to mess with. Pinching each of his fingers as though they were the bridge of a shamisen, he waited.
He'd asked Emma to meet him at the end of the Anchor Yard in Limsa Lominsa the day after their mission. It was a quiet enough evening this late at night that nobody was really present, save for fishermen casting their nets after fullmoon sardines. In fact, he felt proud of himself knowing what those were. If anything, maybe Emma would be impressed. Preening, he denied the want for that. After all, he'd only called her here for a meeting. Nothing more.
Upon Emma's inevitable arrival, Nobuyuki's chest puffed up like a bothered peacock. His first instinct was to go, 'what took you so long?' He managed to quell his nerves enough to say something more polite. "You're a bit late." Slightly more polite. "What kept you? You had me worried."
Emma walks down the pier with an ease she carries in few other places. The rising moon dances in prisms off the calm sea, casting her skin in a cool pallor as she casually tugs at the hem of her shirt, looking for all the world like she belongs here on the whitewashed stones of Limsa Lominsa. But in reality, she wants for the calming shock of sea spray. Something to shake her out of this gnawing feeling that Something is happening. Like a triggered instinct without origin.
She watches Nobu for a moment, bathed in sea light, and the feeling gets wobblier and more amorphous, so she is glad to hear him scold her, as he ever does. She smiles.
"Well, ye know, I know people 'round here. I always get stopped," she says, but it's...not a lie so much as not the truth in this instance. She shakes her head. "Nah, jus'...took the scenic route. I guess."
She rubs the back of her neck and clears her throat. "It's nice to see the city at nigh'. When the pirates ain't causin' trouble anyhow." A flash of a grin. "This is my home turf. Ye don' need to worry. What's goin' on?"
Right to business, as is her way.
The light reflecting off the water casted ripples of light along Nobuyuki's slim-fitting pants. He shifted his weight between his long legs, eying Emma for a moment. He feels her worry, despite her casual demeanor. With what's happened recently, it forms a sad pit in his heart, so he is quick to reassure her.
"Nothing's happened," he insisted. His eyes trailed down, opting to rest on her arms. He was taking in her stance, but his gaze lingered. She looked so muscular and sturdy, even when cloaked in the winter night's chill. When his sight landed on her strong hands, his eyes quickly flickered to the side. He gripped his own bicep through his jacket, filled with an overwhelming awareness of how callused his fingers were for a moment. Being a musician does that to one's hands, after all. It was then he also noticed how quiet he was being.
"I wanted to change that," came his next response. He went straight to the point, no dallying around anymore. "I was thinking. . . perhaps we could-" Bond? No, that's too forward. "-spend the. . ." For his promise to himself of not dallying, it wasn't working. He wasn't like himself. He swallowed, trying to make his unsteady breath and the skipping he felt in his chest even. Why was this so difficult? "Spend the night sometime."
Saying he missed having Emma over since she had moved out to her own apartment felt so forward, it was almost undignifying. He didn't need anyone's presence. He just wanted Emma's. That's it.
"We can go out to a bar or do something for Starlight, perhaps. Something that fits both of our tastes." This was his second Starlight, Emma may be aware. Likely his first that he hasn't spent alone, too.
I was thinking, perhaps we could spend the night--
That is about where the bulb of her brain cracks and shatters.
He's not propositioning you, some logical part of her realizes, once he explains further what he means -- and it isn't like she's some child in this regard. Emma has been propositioned before. She knows how to handle things like this with stoic gruffness when one needs blow off steam on a ship. But that's not what this is. That's not what this is! That's not...
Her face mottles orange; she can feel it burn. She looks pointedly into his shoulder and then into the ocean, nodding to signal he has been heard. Her thoughts feel like wool rubbing on her skull -- and she's no good with words on a good day, so of course the first thing she can summon is what falls out.
"Like a date?"
Fuck.
"...I mean...if you..."
Nobuyuki's first instinct is to deflect and deny it. "It's not really-" For once, he had to be honest with himself. With other people. He's used to feigning being attracted to somebody; serving sake to handsy, wet-dog-breathed drunks in teahouses, who visit for the young male kabuki actors almost exclusively to bed them. Even Emma was familiar with Nobuyuki talking of his ex-lover, Minako. The daughter of a blind biwa player, she met him when she was a busker of the pleasure district. To this day, Nobuyuki is confused whether it was out of attraction or obligation that he went out with her.
Even in the past, he's only really accepted requests towards him, never having made them himself. Both times had the same result. Minako asked him out, got demanding, then got bored. Johdi asked him out, got demanding, then got bored. It was the same formula each time. Would it repeat itself?
Nobuyuki's heart pounded in a way he couldn't describe. His cheeks burned, albeit in a strangely pleasant manner that almost felt shameful. Where he could up with poetic words, he found none. Just uncharacteristic bashfulness.
"I would not be opposed to making it a date," he managed to reply. "If it is something you'd like to pursue, let's go out?" He managed to keep his voice from cracking somehow. "If you don't like it, then. . ."
Oh shit.
She coughs out a ragged laugh, mostly at herself. This kind of thing feels like something she watches happen to other people. She remembers the first time she saw Nobu, and thought how pretty he was -- and then realizing he was a man, and being even more curious about him. She didn't think it would ever...she never thought it could...
"Then I'd be making an arse outta myself, probably." She smirks, despite herself, but her eyes cast away shyly. She's never felt so delicate before, but not in a bad way. She's deeply unsure how to navigate this feeling, and relies on an old standby: staring out into the sea.
"...aye, it could all go tits up..." she says quietly, as if answering an unspoken question. "Or it could go...good...?"
And somehow, that's more frightening! What would that mean? She's had physical flings before, but the risks here are sharper. She wants this to go...well. At the very, very least, she doesn't want to lose one of the more genuine and unexpected friendships of her life.
"...either way..."
She balls up her fists and squares her shoulders like she is preparing to fight someone but her voice remains soft. "...I'd be a fool 'n a half to ignore it. The...I..." She gulps and tries to meet his eyes. "I like you, Nobu. So. We should...try it out?"
The corners of Nobuyuki's mouth tug upward, shyly grinning as he manages to meet Emma's eyes in return. Her curls framing her freckled face, her amber eyes, her words. . . though she put on the look of being tough often, there was something cute about it all. He gave an airy laugh of relief. Good, she wasn't repulsed by the idea. That was a start!
"Thank you," was the first thing that came to his mind. "I-I like you, too." Is this a good idea? It was probably one of his better ones. Gradually, his giddiness dies down. He honestly didn't think he'd get this far, but at least he was slightly prepared.

Ruki’s Gay Agenda
Warnings: Contains LGBT bullying (does end positively)
Words: 2411
_________________________
Jun and Ruki were going about their way to school as they always do every morning when they saw a large crowd piling like sardines towards one area in the hall.
“Ruki, what’s going on?”
Ruki hurried over as soon as they walked into the hallways toward his locker. Almost everyone in the school passed by a certain locker or were staring at it in shock. Some people had their phones out and quickly snapped a photo. The others that kept crowding around either gawked or whispered. Some of them, when they saw Ruki stepping forward, they avoided eye contact or shuffled to their next destination.
Ruki and Jun walked towards Ruki’s locker. Red spray paint was tagged across his locker door with equally crudely written words. “Fag. Cock sucker.”
More people started to crowd around them and Jun could feel the air getting smaller and smaller to the point it felt hard to breathe. He tried to avoid the crowd and looked up at Ruki. He continued to stare at his locker but his face was expressionless. “Ruki?” Jun had no idea what to say. He felt like he was completely out in the open. Completely vulnerable, like the whole world was watching them. Someone probably snapped another photo. Jun approached Ruki again. “Ruki? Are you okay? Should we tell the teachers?”
Ruki blinked and looked at Jun and nodded. “Yeah it’s just… I’m kind of confused.”
Jun was taken aback. And so did everyone else it seemed. They all dropped taking pictures from their phones and looked at Ruki in disbelief. “What do you mean?” Jun asked.
“I mean, yeah. I don’t know why someone would do this. I’m just kind of confused why they would waste a lot of time doing something dumb like this. I’m pretty sure they don’t even know me. What was the point of this?” He turned to the closest girls next to them and asked, “Do you know who did this?” The girls quickly shook their heads and shuffled away. He asked the next batch of people. “Do you know who did this?” Same answer.
He kept asking the people around them when a sound of running footsteps was coming toward them. “Get out of the way,” grumbled Alex pushing his way through the crowd. When he reached towards Ruki he turned back at them and barked at them. “There’s nothing to see here! Get to your next class! Move it!”
The intimidated crowd scurried away from Alex who in this moment resembled a short angry chihuahua. His glare scared the nearby screaming girls. He turned to Ruki. “We’ll find who did this and make them pay.”
Ruki moved his hands up in defense. “Woah man. Violence is totally not necessary. But we should probably clean this though.” He took a finger and brushed it against the paint. “Maybe we can clean this off during lunch. This wouldn’t give everyone a good message if this stayed on here right?”
Alex blinked in amazement. “You are not normal.”
Ruki laughed softly. “What do you mean?”
“Like a normal person would get mad or sad or just stay super quiet and sad. But you’re like confused.”
Ruki gave him a perplexed look. “I am confused though.” He pointed back at his tagged locker. “Like seriously. Why would you waste your time on this? You have so much better things to do than just do this?”
“Dude, no one would think that way except you.”
Ruki laughed again but it didn’t sound like he found Alex’s comment funny. But almost like a laugh of self pity. “Maybe I’m not normal.”
More people passing by along with more whispering. Jun turned and grasped Ruki’s sleeve. “Hey. Maybe we should go. I’ll help you out during lunch too!”
Ruki turned and gave him a soft smile. “I’d like that. Thanks Jun.”
Throughout the school periods the school’s inner social media circle flooded with Ruki’s tagged locker. Spreading from each account to the other trying to find who the culprit was as if each person was trying to be an anonymous knight in shining armor. As usual, Ruki didn’t seem to take notice or bother with the flooding messages on his socials asking him questions like he was so person of interest.
When it was lunch Jun met up with Ruki outside of his English class and they both walked to the locker rooms to borrow some towels. “Are you okay?” Jun suddenly asked while they filled a mop bucket full of water from the sinks.
“Yeah? Why you ask?”
The bucket was full and heavy for Jun. Luckily Ruki was stronger because he actually did sports and took over the bucket handle. “It just seems that your reaction is really…” Jun couldn’t think of the right words and he knew he always had trouble with that. “Different? Like you’re not angry that you were targeted?”
Ruki scoffed as they took the stacks of towels and detergent from the bench. “Is Alex rubbing off on you?”
“What do you mean?”
“He just told me I wasn’t normal because I reacted differently than others if they were bullied too,” Ruki said with a smile but quickly retracted it back. “So were you influenced by Alex that I’m not normal?”
“No! It’s not like that!” Jun stammered. He felt his face turn red while holding onto the towels as they walked passed the gawking students in the hall. “Actually I think that’s really brave of you.”
“Brave?” Ruki asked with a slight shocked tone.
“Yeah. It’s honestly really inspiring. Instead of putting out your anger or giving yourself pity you had another outlook on it. Instead of causing more problems you want to resolve it. I think that’s really amazing. So it’s not really a matter if you’re normal or not. It just…” He raised the towels to cover his face from embarrassment. “You’re an inspiration.”
They reached Ruki’s locker and set down the things. Ruki put his hand on his shoulder and smiled. “Thanks, that means a lot.” Jun nodded and gave him a towel. When he started mixing the soap detergent in the water, Ruki spoke again. “And… thanks for saying I’m not weird or anything.”
Jun looked up and frowned. “Why would you be weird? You’re not weird at all Ruki.”
“Hey Ruki!” Both of the boys turned toward the direction of Alex. He stomped pass the crowd dragging two younger boys in each hand by their shirt collars flailing their arms begging for mercy. Despite his smaller but lithe body, Alex threw the boys in front of Ruki. “I found the culprits.” The boys’ childish faces indicated that they were freshmen. They looked up at Ruki and whimpered like scared dogs. “Apologize you twats!” Alex demanded.
Ruki put a hand up at Alex. “Alex they’re not animals. Talk to them like normal human beings.” Ruki then kneeled down at the quiet freshmen like they were actual kindergarteners. He didn’t seem to show any sign of remorse but rather a sign of humbleness. He smiled at them and they jerked back. “Are you the guys that happened to write that on my locker?”
The smile seemed to intimidate one of the boys as he looked down on the floor without saying anything.
“You can tell me the truth. I’m not going to yell at you if you really did it or not.” Ruki’s soothing voice was seriously not helping this contradicting situation.
“It was his idea!” One of the boys suddenly shouted.
The other boy looked at his buddy in a face of someone that has been betrayed. “Wait what the fuck? You’re the one that wrote on it first!”
“Shut the fuck up Eddy! You always start it! You always kept calling him a cock sucker anyway!”
“Let’s back up a bit,” Ruki interjected. He turned to the boy who was called Eddy. “So why do you think I’m that?”
Eddy continued to look at the floor. The behavior really did resemble a kindergartener that did not want to admit that they hit someone first. “Because you just give off that vibe.”
“How so?” Ruki looked at them both as if he was really concerned. “Like I’m actually curious. I want to know how do I give off that kind of vibe to you guys?”
“Because you act so girly!” The other boy stammered. “You look at other guys so hard like you want to suck dick like dude it’s so gross! Also you move and look like a girl anyway!”
That alone made Jun want to punch that kid in the face but luckily Ruki interjected again. “Because I don’t act like a typical bro type. Is that why you made those assumptions?”
“Yeah isn’t that how gay people act? That’s so weird,” spat Eddy. Alex was about to whack him in the head but Ruki waved at him to stop.
Ruki clenched his teeth. “Yikes. That’s really problematic. Actually a lot of it what you said is really really problematic.” He brought his fingers to begin counting their call outs. “For one, you’re assuming that because I’m a guy I have to act super masculine. Not all boys are born with that masculine mindset you're actually putting a lot of boys in danger if you have assume that on all boys. No, sorry, male presenting humans. Two, you assume that all guys that act ‘girly’ are gay because they don’t fit the typical mold of the masculine bro type. Am I right?”
The two freshmen boys didn’t look at Ruki they continued to look down. Eddy started twirling his tennis shoe laces.
“And one last thing,” Ruki continued raising three fingers. “Let’s just say I really am gay. Like no offense but why do you care?” That got the boys’ attention. “That kind of thing should be something that should be kept to me. And even if I do, what do you call that, ‘come out’ right? I don’t think it should matter that much because my sexuality shouldn’t define who I am. There's so much more to me than my sexuality. And who I love should only matter between me and that other person. Or multiple if I identify as a polysexual, but that should be a relationship between me and that other person. It shouldn’t even be your business unless I invite you into it.”
The two boys were completely speechless. They seem to be at a loss of words so Ruki continued to ramble.
“I am pretty sure if you ask any actual gay guys they probably wouldn’t pounce on you anyway. Because that’s not really how that works. I mean, again if I was gay, I have never seen you before so I don’t know why you would even be afraid of me.” Then Ruki tapped his chin and thought some more. “Could it be you’re afraid of gay guys because you don’t want to be treated like a girl? You don’t want to know what it’s like for a girl in a man’s world?”
“Okay! I’m sorry!” Eddy roared at him overpowering Ruki’s soft voice. Everyone in the hallway stopped in their tracks at them making it feel like deja vu from this morning. His buddy shot a threatening look of betrayal and panic at him. “I’m sorry for calling you all that! It was Aku’s idea first! He keeps talking about it every time and I just kind of tagged along and we thought it would be funny! Just a joke!”
“Dude what the fuck?!” Aku yelled at him. “Why the fuck are you calling me out you’re the one that called him the cock-sucker first! I remembered that!”
“I’m just telling him the truth!”
“Woah guys calm down. It’s fine.” Ruki moved his hands to cease them from arguing even further. He softly laughed and rested his chin on his palm. “I appreciate your honesty. But you know, if you really wanted to cause a scene let me give you a piece of advice. This.” He pointed back at the locker. “Is not the way to do it. You should try being nice sometime. It’s fun.”
“We are really sorry,” Eddy pleaded again on the verge of tears.
Alex kicked them, first Aku then Eddy, face down on the floor. “If you’re sorry stop sobbing and start scrubbing.”
The boys crawled towards the bucket and grabbed the dripping wet towels. As they rubbed the paint off the metal more passerbyers came through for a quick snap or two. The freshmen boys tried their best to ignore them by scrubbing the locker harder and trying hard not to cry. It was like watching a quick display of public shaming.
Alex and Jun tried to shoo the crowd away making them mind their own business. “This is so annoying,” complained Alex. He turned back to the whimpering that felt his intense stare by scrubbing harder. “Scrub harder!”
Jun patted Alex. “I think they get the message it’s okay. See they’re concentrating on making it spotless.” Alex quietly furiating shooed more passerbys. Jun stood on his tip toes and whispered in Ruki’s ear, “The way you handled that was amazing.”
Ruki softly chuckled into his mouth trying hide his embarrassment but Jun could still see he was smiling from his cheeks. “You’re giving me too much credit. I was just trying to tell them how I feel.”
Jun couldn’t help but smile back feeling so proud of him. “Still though. I think they will probably remember this rather than just beating them up.”
“I mean I hope so. But you know,” he glanced at Jun and flashed his perfect white teeth, “you inspired me to say all of that.”
Jun was surprised. “Wait how? What did I say?”
Ruki shrugged. “Because you encouraged me having another approach at it.” Jun was going to come up with a response but his brain almost fried by the compliment. However Ruki went up to the freshmen. He tapped on Aku’s shoulder interrupting his concentration of scrubbing. “You know if you really want to bring people’s attention to other people’s ‘juicy secrets,’ next time say more accurate facts rather than just stirring up fictional claims you know? Like if you wanted to call me out at least get my sexuality right.”
“So you're not gay?” asked a sniffly Eddy.
Ruki laughed but he seemed to be nervous rather than making a joke. “No I’m bi.”

13th Gate Asylum Review
Last weekend four members of our Creepy Crew had the opportunity to go through the 13th Gate Asylum Haunt in Oxnard, CA.
These are their stories.
Tumblr media
By Roxy Tart
I live in Orange County, and during the months of September and October, I cover haunts such as Universal HHN, Knotts Scary Farm, Queen Mary Dark Harbor, etc. So when my dear friend Nikki (who may be one of the biggest scaredy-cats I know) asked if I wanted to drive for 2 hours to cover a small, one house, 15-minute haunt, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure. But, I love haunts, and I love the people that throw them and the community behind them, and when a few days before we were thinking of heading up there 13 Gate contacted me asking if I’d like to come…it was a sign, and I had to say yes!
So I swung through DTLA and picked up my road dog Michelle, and we headed up to the hemp fields of Ventura County. We arrived at Nikki’s and both her and our dear friend Angel (also a big scaredy cat), were already nervous wrecks. I knew I had my work cut out for me…somehow I’d have to keep these two from freaking out, passing out, or dying, all while taking in enough of this Haunt to do a write up (spoiler alert, it wasn’t hard because the people who run 13th Gate are phenomenal!). I laid down the “rules” at dinner.
1. I would go in front
2. Michelle would bring up the rear. (now is a good time to point out that Michelle doesn’t really love being scared either, lol)
3. I’ll hold your hand, but only ONE! I need the other one for my phone.
4. Do not freak out and pull out my earrings, or rip my shirt.
Easy peasy right?
My plan was simple. We would get there before the Haunt opened for the night, get Nikki and Angel used to the place, have them talk to security, other people in line, maybe the girl who runs the front door…and by then they would feel safe and just be able to have fun. Let me tell you, this is NOT what happened.
Tumblr media
We rolled up and the first thing Nikki noticed was that there were scare actors in the parking lot. And when I say “noticed” what I mean is “freaked the hell out, froze in the driver's seat, and couldn’t park the car!”. I was eventually able to get out of the car and ask the actors who were swarming like flies on a dead body to back up just a bit so that Nikki could park. I was honestly worried that as she sat there screaming with the car in gear she was gonna run someone over. So, the car parked, check. Michelle out, check. Michelle and I filming Nikki and Angel being terrorized and screaming their heads off while scare actors CLIMBED IN THE CAR WITH THEM, check. Now I’m gonna pause here a second and point out that in all my years of Haunts (I worked my first Haunt in ’96), I have never, ever, seen actors climb IN a person’s car. It was a super ballsy move, but it paid off big time. By the time we got everyone out of the car, the whole line, security, and everyone working knew what was up. We were full-on pre-show entertainment.
As the crew stood in line (I honestly don’t know how Michelle kept the other two from running away), I went and checked in. My first impression of 13th Gate was “these actors are in it to win it” and my second was how absolutely wonderful, charming, helpful and friendly the staff was. From security to checking in, to being escorted around, to watching the house through the video monitors (more on that later), I was blown away by how amazing everyone was. I found out that everyone there was a volunteer, they had people drive up from Orange County to work the haunt every weekend, and it was staffed with a bunch of families. Moms, dads, and kids all working together having the best time! And everyone that I talked to (other than the scare actors who were in the house in character of course) were super friendly, big smiles, and incredibly accommodating. They made me feel like I was part of the family, and that’s what really sets this place apart from other haunts. This isn’t a job, this is a community, and you can tell.
Now, back to our adventure. We were waiting to go in and the lady at the front informed us that they don’t funnel big groups into the house. You go with the party you came with. If that’s 6 people, you all go in. If that’s one person alone, you go in alone. One of the things I hate most is being herded into a house with 1000 other people and shuffling through the whole thing feeling like a sardine, so I was happy about that. It was our turn, and the four of us entered a church-like building where a person in a black robe stood blocking our path. The next thing we knew, it was pitch black, and we could feel people moving all around us, brushing up against us, and just being generally creepy AF. When they decided we were rattled enough, the lights came back on and we were surrounded by people in robes, who very nicely let us continue on our way. Now, as much as I would LOVE to go through room by room and tell you all the amazing and delightful things we saw, I won’t. Because A. I don’t want to ruin the surprise and B. that would make this write up about 20 pages long, lol. But I will tell you this; 13th Gate Asylum is a beautifully well-oiled machine that works on sound and lighting cues to let the actors know what’s going on, and in many rooms, the actors have complete control over where you go and when you leave. Every person in a room takes ownership of it, and you can tell they are proud of what they do.
After we went through we were invited to relax and watch the monitors. There are cameras throughout the house, and these are used to keep an eye on everyone and make sure they're safe, and also for cues. There is one person at the monitors with a radio, relaying messages to other people all over the warehouse. After doing that for a bit, we were taken on a backstage tour where we got to see the ins and outs of the haunt, and we got to experience some of the rooms again, with the actors really showing off for the cameras! It was so much fun! I honestly didn’t want to leave, and if it hadn’t been for my two-hour drive home, I might have asked if we could just stay and hang out for the night.
Overall, the 13th Gate Asylum is one of my favorite Haunts this year. It was absolutely worth the drive, and I fully plan on going back every year!

I was excited when I found out when I was going to the 13th Gate Asylum in Oxnard. I had never been to this haunt and never been to a single maze in a warehouse. I did not know what to expect but I was eager to see what it was about. This would be shocking to most since I am a self-proclaimed scaredy-cat but I have always liked going to haunts and becoming less scared. Driving up to the haunt was the beginning of our experience. We were greeted in the parking lot by a clown and grim reaper character. My friend Nikki was driving and she was more scared about this experience than I was and totally freaked out. It was pure hilarity when she could barely park the car in sheer panic that there were scare actors following our car. It took us almost 20 minutes to get her and Angel out of the car. Just by the interaction with characters in the parking lot and their involvement in scaring us already had me hooked on this haunt. We finally made it inside the building and the atmosphere was set for the perfect buildup of fear. You could hear all sorts of noises coming from inside the maze with screams here or there. The neat thing about this maze was they weren’t shuffling mass groups of people into the maze. You only went with your group, even if you were the only one. This factor also freaked me out because I wouldn’t be able to hide in the crowds of people. But alas, I must be brave and get the whole experience since I could not hide. This maze has by far been one of my favorite mazes to go thru. Each room has a different theme or storyline and you are completely at the will of the actors. Many of the rooms have automatic doors that only open when the actors open it. This forced you to be involved in the room and all the scare factors that went along with it. So if you’re running around trying to get away from the people scaring you good luck. There were a couple of unexpected scares that would get even the bravest “I don’t get scared” person. They used scare techniques that I hadn’t seen before. Who knew people crawling creepily on the floor and flexible people would be so scary. When we were out of the maze we got to talk to some of the people that are in charge. I was surprised to find out that all the actors are on a volunteer basis and not only that but many families were involved. The moms proudly pointed out where their husbands and children were in the maze. You could really tell these people cared about giving the best experience possible and this wasn’t a job but a passion. I would recommend this maze to anyone because it is great for all scare levels. I plan on attending this maze every year and seeing what new designs they come up with.

I feel like you should know a few things about me before I give my thoughts on my experience at the 13th Gate Asylum haunt. Fun fact number one, the reason I like the horror genre is that it generally ‘HORRIFIES” me. It invokes fear, which I kind of dig…. with that being said…Fun fact number two, I like my horror on the big screen or my TV screen…. NOT in my personal space…so haunts and scare zones usually put me in the fetal position and my appointed protector has to pick me up, fight off the Ghoulies and carry me out. Fun fact number three, I am a scaredy-cat…not a cool spooky girl… A BIG CRYBABY SCAREDY CAT.
Now for my thoughts…I assembled the cool crew to attend the haunt with me this past Saturday, October 19th. I briefed them about their roles in my protection for the evening's event, and they briefed me on what to expect around every corner. Just so you know, I’m no fool…I assembled the best of the best…a seasoned haunt vet and my appointed protector (Roxy Tart) …. a good friend with fresh big girl undies who recently just did the Haunted Hayride in LA (Michelle Mallek) …and my scaredy-cat adopted ADULT child of mine (Angel Fajardo). My anxiety was high the entire drive to the haunt, and that anxiety was JUSTIFIED as the ghouls surrounded my car as I was trying to park therefore paralyzing me so much so that I could not park the car( something none of us expected…..HORRIFYING and fear justified….thanks guys!). Once my appointed protector was able to get me out of the car. That fear was so paralyzing that I literally felt like I just ran a marathon and I hadn’t even made it inside yet! Once inside, I totally disregarded my appointed protector’s (well…my whole crew actually) personal space and walked through room after room of the UNFORSEEN cussing and telling myself positive affirmations through my tears because…you know…. that whole FEAR JUSTIFIED thing. The actors who are actually volunteers are soooo believable that I even had a nightmare about one of the rooms…. way to hone your craft guys! The props, the costumes and the overall aesthetic each room had were spot on for the story being told. Oh my goodness… and the sounds completely startle while the lights and the fog disorient you. I am not a huge haunt fan like some of you out there but take it from THE most scared of all scaredy cats…..GO EXPERIENCE THIS HAUNT….and for those of you spookys out there that are too cool for school and nothing scares you…I guarantee the UNFORSEEN will scare the COOL right out of you.

When I found out I was going to the 13th Gate Asylum in Oxnard I was terrified. I love Halloween and watching scary movies but participating in haunts isn’t my cup of tea. I would consider myself a sympathetic scaredy-cat; if someone around me is terrified I am just as terrified if not more. I hate loud noises, creepy costumes, losing my personal space, and pop up scares. That being said, I hated the 13th gate asylum haunt! Would I go back? I definitely would!!
As soon as we arrived we were pursued by killer clowns, prison escapees, and hell raised demons. The insane make-up, crazy effects, and creative rooms kept me on my toes. The polka dot room was my favorite room. Who wouldn’t love a room full of polka dots! “I love polka dots, I wear polka dots”. After meeting a few scarers and members of the operational staff I fell in love with this “well-oiled rig” of a haunt. This haunt is run by different families, kids, and volunteers. I would definitely recommend giving it a visit!
