Coup de Foudre - Lucas & Eliott
Are people aware of the meaning of coup de foudre? It is french for love at first sight, but it’s also “Thunderbolt” or “lightning strike” I bring this up, not only because it’s french, but because it fits Lucas and Eliott compared to the other pairings in general, this includes Isak and Even.
So lets go through it:
First we have Eliott when he first sees Lucas:
The interesting thing about this is immediately we are introduced to him, without Lucas. As an audience, we already know that there is an interest on Eliott’s part towards Lucas, because he looks back, and we are introduced to him separately.
Later we have this revealed:
Which was much earlier than Even. This is the 5th episode it is revealed, but with Even it wasn’t until the last (10) episode
and that is all there was to it. Eliott’s explanation went further, which is another thing that makes their version of Isak and Even unique.
We also don’t see Even like we do Eliott. We only first see Even through Isak in the canteen, which has a different affect of connection with the audience, it being through Isak’s eyes.
Then obviously, we see how infatuated Lucas is by Eliott at the meeting. Isak was also the same, but shys away when Even looks back
He’s more curious as well
With Lucas it’s different, he takes every chance to look at Eliott and doesn’t shy away when Eliott looks back at him.
I mean, he’s fucking stunned, then he gets caught up/zoned out
He literally takes every chance, any time he looks at Basile, he does a quick look back before facing forward (watch the scene and you’ll understand what I mean)
That’s also another thing, they take more time with this sort of thing compared to Evak
Anyway, my next point is on where I believe Eliott really falls for Lucas, and that’s the piano scene.
I adore this scene so much. With these screenshots I’ll show you what I mean because Maxence is brilliant with being able to say so much with each of his expressions. But after being in the presence of the other, we know that the feelings are growing on Lucas’ part- as he is the central character- but with Eliott, we don’t openly know.
He’s surprised, but he also sits up because he is properly intrigued. By sitting up it brings him closer effectively and seems like he is really taking everything in.
This little smile here, the music and Lucas through it is speaking to him
This is almost looks sad, but no, he is just taking it all in.
When Lucas looks around to see his reaction and you can clearly see he is impressed, its a more genuine smile than some excitable smiles Eliott expresses
but it drops ever so slightly and I think that that is when it properly hits him. I assume they made eye contact and that was it. It was no bad thing, it’s just when he realised that he was falling for Lucas.- take this with a pinch of salt though as it’s my opinion, but anyways...
It’s also important to note that the piece Lucas plays is “I Love You” by Riony. That is a little message sent by Lucas in of itself, even if it is very early in the game.
Then my final point is on their first kiss
Sadly, this is hard to capture as it’s more to do with audio, so I’ll have to explain.
You hear the rain in between the scenes with Eliott and the flashlight, as the music plays whenever there is light and Eliott (poetic cinema)
but after this one^ you hear a thunderclap as Lucas looks around for Eliott, and Eliott is there; out in the rain, waiting for Lucas.
You see how this post is now all looped up? Yeeeeeeeeehhhhh a “Thunderbolt”
I like to also think how other than the parallel to Polaris and the Yin Yang, Light and Dark dichotomy, that Eliott in the light is the equivalent for Lucas of Eliott only seeing Lucas on his first day of school.
There’s more thunder happening on Lucas’ approach as well. There is still kind of a distant echo, and just as Lucas brings out his hands, you can hear it start to get louder, but the music comes back in. Also when their hands join, you purposefully hear the thunder there.
Additionally, I think it’s important with how they got the music perfectly lined up. I don’t think that it was only used for satisfactory purposes in creating good content, but for the purpose of emphasising just how powerful, sudden and overwhelming those feelings are.
Coup de foudre is used for this purpose; of love at first sight, or a sudden, unexpected emotional event. Obviously their first kiss is not “love at first sight” per ce, but that’s why I stated about their first infatuations of the other, and how that obviously grew with the time spent together with Lucas’ piano piece to ^ this.
I know that there is new content and this doesn’t focus on it, but I love this shit, it’s amazing what beautiful content is out there. Going back over it and delving deep really makes you appreciate the content so much more.
