after all this time i still can't predict how mayor holiday will be characterized
because like. i feel like all the fanon versions of her where she's stoic and serious and gruff are like... not right?? queen is supposed to reflect her. right. like that much is painfully obvious
... none of those adjectives apply to queen????? now ofc she could be mayor holiday's total opposite to highlight the differences in their approach to mothering noelle - i'm not discounting that or anything because i literally do not know. it's just that's not necessarily the vibe i got
queen is cheerful and silly but very pushy. very demanding. she expects a lot and doubles down and really puts on the pressure when people don't meet those expectations. all with a smile! like. i feel like the fandom saw rudy say noelle's mom is hard on her and saw the thing about her keeping her office frigid cold and automatically assumed she's a cold person who only knows how to frown
you don't have to be stoic to be a strict parent. you can be all smiles and be more demanding and controlling than the gruffest most stone-faced parent in the world. and like... we saw that when it comes down to it, queen is more than capable of dropping the silly antics and jokes and she can and will get serious. she doesn't need cages or control plugs or an army or anything but herself and a few well-placed threats. which reminds me of when alphys said hometown's cops (ugh) don't really do anything because mayor holiday takes care of it all.
i think... maybe. she used to be a little less strict and a little more genuinely lighthearted. but after dess disappears, she drops that lightheartedness. she gets really, really serious about turning hometown into a safe place and making sure noelle is strong enough to like. Survive.
but she does it all... with a smile! after all, every politician's got to have a dazzling fake grin, right?

~
One thing many people knew was that you needed darkness for light. And you need light in darkness.
In the brightest part of the day, darkness would always be there, lurking behind objects, trying to get as close to light as possible. Light always ran from the dark.
And in the darkest parts of the night, light would be there. Disguising itself as many objects, fairy lights, the glow from one's phone.
They were total opposites, but they needed each other. They were nothing without each other. And they were the reason for each other's existence.
Y/N was light. She brightened the room as the entered, brought smiles to people's faces as they spoke to her. The light would softly kiss her skin as it peeked through her blinds of a morning. Light was warm, and welcoming.
Warren was darkness. His past is what made the shadows dance in his wake as he walked along the sidewalk. They enveloped everything, they hid behind tree's and stalked behind people. It was cold, but somewhat comforting to him.
The wings that sat graciously upon their backs told different stories.
Y/N carried the eponymous of darkness with her wherever she went. The darkness of her feathers creeping into her peripheral vision every now and then. Whispers of the shadows would pull her further into the darkness.
Warren carried light. He knew that the light would always be there for him. It used to be his greatest enemy. But now it's a reminder that even the most damaged people can be have some form of light in their life.
Just like the light and darkness, Y/N and Warren never had a good relationship. They never blended, being opposites they never fully connected.
It was as simple as that.
The two were always at each others throats, and always making snarky comments about each other. The team had grown used to the bickering between the two and they knew that one day it would have to come to an end, thankfully that moment was closer than they all thought.
"Can you just shut up?" Warren snapped as he looked over at Y/N who had just made a small comment under her breath about the new mission.
"Can you just shut up." Y/N mocked the British blonde and rolled her eyes.
Charles sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, "can the both of you be quiet?" When both winged mutants nodded and looked away from each other, Charles thanked them and went back to talking.
"Now this isn't any regular mission. You're dealing with mutants, who may be even stronger than the lot of you combined, so be careful. Now there's a lot of them, no one knows how long they've been there for, no one knows how they even got on the bloody island to begin with. What I need you to do is make a peace offering. They've been attacking the ships that pass by, just the other week they managed to bring down a plane, who knows what else will happen if we don't stop them. Can I count on you lot?" His tone was serious but he wore a small grin.
Everyone nodded.
"You can count on us, Professor. This isn't our first mission, how hard can it be right?" Scott asked everyone who brushed his question off with a small laugh.
"Okay well up bright and early tomorrow, all of you. I suggest you go and get some rest." Charles told everyone. He bidded his goodnight and sent everyone on their way.
"You two. Come back." Charles said as Warren and Y/N started to follow everyone out.
They didn't even have to look at Charles to know he wanted. Y/N spun on her heal, deliberately hitting Warren in the face with her blackened fathers. He swatted her wing from his face and walked back over to Charles.
"What am I going to do with you two?"
It was a rhetorical question, they knew that. Charles shook his head and could only them a helpless look.
"I don't know what you two have against each other, but whatever it is you need to sort it out." He held his hand up to stop Warren from speaking. "I don't care, whatever it is, sort it out. This is a dangerous mission and you two need to be there for your teammates instead of off in the corner bickering. Now, off to bed."
Y/N and Warren walked back to the mansion in silence, occasionally Warren would cough and Y/N would sniffle, but that was about the only noise heard from the two.
They almost got stuck in the elevator because of their wings, but Warren gave Y/N a shove and she fell right onto the floor. Warren laughed as he stepped over her and continued on down the hall.
Y/N knew that if they were both going to make it out of the mission alive, she had to be as nice as possible for the next two days. And she knew it was going to be the biggest struggle of her life.
+
Y/N walked up the ramp of the plane ready to get a move on, but stopped when she saw only Warren was on board.
"Where is everyone?" She asked as she fixed the strap of her bag that was slung over her shoulder.
Warren glanced at her, and looked her up and down, a small grin on his face. "They'll be here soon."
She sighed and put her bag under her seat. Y/N knew she wasn't able to sit back in the seats properly so she would have to stand, but nevertheless she sat on the edge of the seat and rested her head in her palms.
The team soon arrived one by one and before anyone knew it, the jet was flying through the sky at a godly speed. Kurt and Peter had fallen asleep almost instantly, and Scott was clearly dozing off, so Y/N went and sat on the floor in front of Jean.
"You nervous?" She asked the red headed mutant.
"A little.. you?" She questioned.
Y/N shook her head. She had been on a numerous amount of missions before. Her toughest one yet is not strangling Warren. She didn't know why she hated the boy, they just never clicked. Maybe it was a mutation thing.
The last time there was another Speedster at the school, Peter almost burnt holes in his shoes from trying to outrun the other Speedster. Needless to say, the other guy left.
Four hours later Beast announced their arrival on the island. They landed roughly and the door opened just as everyone unbuckled themselves from their seats.
Y/N got blasted in the face by heat as the wind blew the hot air and sand into the jet, it left a stinging sensation on her cheeks and neck. Turning her earpiece on, Y/N slowly stood up and looked at Raven for instructions before looking back outside as she crept down the ramp.
The forest line crept right onto the sand, leaving an unsettling feeling to hang in the air. Y/N looked was the first to step onto the sand, looking from left to right, the beach seemed pretty safe so she waved everyone out.
"Okay, Y/N and Warren, could you guys go up and see if you can spot anyone?" Raven asked them both as she fixed her earpiece.
The two nodded and immediately took off in opposite directions.
+
It was all a trap.
Y/N's breathing grew louder as she ran through the dense forest, looking up for a break in the leafy canopy so she could escape.
Her and Scott had lost the rest of the group, though she was sure Kurt teleported them all back to the jet, that meant they were on their own for the time being, but Y/N could hear the shouts from behind her of the angry mutants.
She didn't know much, all but they wanted the team dead.
"Scott! Scott there's a break up ahead!" She yelled and grabbed his hand tightly as her eyes fell upon a small break in the trees.
He nearly tripped trying to keep up with her and he couldn't help but scream as his arm was pulled at and then suddenly he was being pulled through the air. He got a mouth full of leafs and at that moment he was thankful for his glasses otherwise he would have lost an eye.
Y/N held onto his hands tightly as he flew towards the jet where Kurt was waving them down. Y/N hit the ground roughly and let go of Scott who rolled into Peter’s legs.
"What are we waiting for let's go, they're trying to kill us!" Y/N stress-fully said as she placed her hands on her shoulders in attempt to calm herself.
Jean shook her head, "Warren and Raven are still in there!"
"So is Hank, he went back for them." Ororo sighed as they all watched the treeline.
Just as Scott announced he was going to start up the jet, a couple dozen mutants piled out of the forest and onto the beach where they ran right towards the team.
Scott swore loudly as he was almost tackled by a man.
Y/N decided that they could handle themselves and that she was going to go look for the others.
She held her fingers to her earpiece as she ran past multiple people before taking flight. "Raven are you there?" She asked loudly as she scanned the top of trees for any sign.
"Y/N? Y/N we can see the jet!" She heard Hanks crackly voice in her ear. Y/N came to a halt and turned back around in an instant.
There seemed to be more people in the beach than before, and her team was losing.
As Y/N landed, she was cornered by three mutants, two of which had terribly sharp teeth. She took first swing and hit the guy to her left on the jaw. After a kick to the stomach, he was down.
The two mutants split and Y/N could only focus on the one running towards her with flaming hands. She ducked his charge and whacked him with one of her wings.
Y/N spun around but was grabbed by the neck and pulled into a chest. She pulled at their arms as she squeezed her wings in tightly to make the mutant let go, but it wasn't any use.
The demonic looking mutant from before jumped up and ran at Y/N.
She was struggling to come up with a plan, so she went with her gut instinct. When the mutant was close enough, Y/N kicked her legs up and used him as a sort of stepping stool to flip herself over the other guy.
As the mutant let go, Y/N was joined by one of her teammates.
"I have this!" She grunted as she brought her elbow up to one guys chin.
Warren rolled his eyes as his fist went through one mutants stomach and they both watched as they disappeared into smoke.
Not knowing what their mutation was, well that was the hardest part of fighting them, and Y/N was starting to think the x men wouldn't ever win.
Hearing a loud grunt to her right, Y/N glanced at Warren to see her had some sort of knife sticking from his thigh.
"What the fuck, Warren!" She gasped as she roundhouse kicked a mutant before running over to him.
"Ah, fuck!" He yelled and punched the side of the jet.
Y/N dropped to her knees and steadied her hands on his thigh.
"What are you doing? Don't rip it out!" He yelled at her.
"You can't fight with a knife in your leg, relax!"
"I can't relax when I have this sticking from my thigh!"
Y/N didn't waste any time ripping the knife right out. She knew she probably did some damage but what else could she have done.
Warren almost screamed but held it in. He closed his eyes and took a fee deep breaths. Hearing a struggled noise, he opened his eyes to see Y/N be thrown to the ground by the same mutant who could turn his hands into flames.
"Hey!" He yelled and swung at the guy but he ducked and Warren tripped and ate a mouthful of sand.
The mutant grabbed Y/N by the wings and took off into the sky. Warren looked up and watched in horror as Y/N fought the mutant by kicking at him.
"Y/N!" Jean yelled as she ran over to Warren who was now on his feet ready to jump into action.
The sound of Y/N screaming was enough for anyone fighting to be concerned. It then dawned on Jean and Warren as to what was happening. He was literally burning her.
Warren took off from the ground and reached the two who were suspended in air. He grabbed the mutant by the elbow and loosened his grip enough for Y/N to get free. Warren swung his fist at the guys face a couple of times and he soon let go of Y/N completely.
Y/N had no energy left to fight, and that meant she had zero energy left to fly. So when the mutant let go, she fell. And if it wasn't for Jean in the ground ready to stop her, she would have been as flat as pancake.
Warren flew back down to the ground and watched as Jean lowered her onto the sand. "Y/N, oh my god!" She gasped as her hands hovered over Y/N's frail body.
Y/N wings had been badly burnt, and her flight suit had melted to her skin on her shoulders and sides.
"I'm fine, help me up." Y/N said weekly as she reached for Jean’s hand.
"You're in no shape to be fighting," Warren told her as Jean quickly used her telekinesis to push a few mutants back. He put his arms under her back and legs carefully before lifting her up.Her hand gripped tightly onto Warrens shoulder, he almost told her to let go because of how tight of a grip she had, but he decided against it.
Her once beautiful wings dragged on the floor as Warren and Jean rushed to get her to the jet in time.
"Guys? Peter's been hurt! We have to leave, now!" Raven's voice yelled through their earpieces. Hank was carrying Peter, who was yelling in pain, onto the jet before settling him in a chair and running to the cockpit to turn the engines on.
Warren placed Y/N on the ground and mumbled to her to roll over onto her stomach. He was shocked as she complied without any arguments or smart ass comments. The back door shut and everyone held on tightly as the engine whirled loudly and pushed the jet through the sky.
"Y/N? How bad does it hurt?" Jean asked as she rummaged through the first-aid kit. Warren looked down at Y/N with concern as she never replied. Instead she was out cold.
The two looked at each other with concern. This couldn’t be good.
+
When Y/N woke up she had no idea why she was laying in her bed at the mansion. Her back ached, and so did her wings. Pushing herself up, she slowly stood up and tried to stretch the best she could without hurting herself. All Y/N knew was that she had to use the bathroom badly.
After using the loo, Y/N moved to the sink to wash her hands but tensed when she saw her reflection.
She had been wrapped up in bandages around the humerus and ulna part of her wings. (a/n; yes i really googled bird anatomy for an hour for that.) And she had bandages taped to her shoulders as well. She winced as she thought back to the pain. The feeling of the fire on her skin. Y/N ran her hands over her face and let out a loud groan.
With much difficulty and pain, Y/N managed to put a bra on and change into tracksuit pants right before her bedroom door opened to reveal Jean.
“You’re up!” The young red head hugged her friend gently before pulling away and taking in her appearance. “You’re looking a lot healthier.”
Y/N quirked an eyebrow. “oh yeah? Uh how long was I-”
“Almost three Days. Everybody is worried about you.”
She smiled a little, “three days huh? I bet it was like a vacation for some..” The sarcasm in her voice was clearly evident.
“More like nightmare. I thought he hated you, I really did. But he was in here a lot checking up in on you. He’s the one who did that to your wings.” Jean spoke quietly in case someone heard her. It was late and she wasn’t exactly allowed out of bed but her room is next to Y/N’s and she heard the toilet flush so she came over as quickly as she could.
Y.N was taken back. Why would Warren help her? He hated her, well from what she knew.
“I have to..” Y/N never finished her sentence as she walked past Jean and out into the hall. She made a left and stopped at the first door. Gently knocking on it, she waited to see if he was awake.
The door opened and Y/N almost took a step back.
“Y/N? You’re up..” Warren mumbled as he let go of the doorknob.
Y/N didn’t know what to say, she didn’t even know why she knocked on his door to begin with. So she did the first thing that came to mind and she hugged him.
It took him a second to react but he slowly and carefully put his arm’s around her lower back. The girl with the tough facade, sarcasm filled jokes, and strong opinions, was crumbling apart in his arms by the second.
He didn’t even know she was crying until he felt her take a deep breath. Warren took a few steps back and pulled her into his room, spinning them around, he shut the door with his foot.
“I don’t hate you, Warren.” Y/N whispered as she rested her chin on his shoulder.
“I know.” Warren told her.
“It was stupid of me to treat you like dirt. And you didn’t have to help me but you did and I feel like shit because of it.” Y/N never knew this is how she felt. She just let herself pour all her emotions out to him. “I’m sorry.”
Warren never thought that she would apologise to him. He never expected her to either. They stood around for a few minutes in silence before he figured out what he wanted to say.
“I know what it’s like to lose yourself because your identity had been taken from you. Your wing’s are what make you, you. And I wouldn’t let my worst enemy go through what I did, Not even you.” He tried cracking a joke and smiled a little when she laughed before reaching up and wiping her cheek.
“Thank you, Warren.” She said quietly as they pulled a part.
He nodded once at her.
“I’m sorry I ruined your sleeve.” She said and wiped his shoulder free of tears.
“Hey, how about tomorrow I take you through some exercises to strengthen your wings?” He asked her. Y/N nodded and gave him a small smile.
“That’d be great. Again I’m real sorry, Warren.” She muttered as she walked towards his door.
Warren followed her as opened the door for her. When he turned to face her, they were only millimetres apart, but neither of them backed down.
“Y/N, sometimes to really understand someone, you have to see them at their best, and their worst. And I think I’ve got you figured out now.” He mumbled as he searched her eye’s for any emotion, but all he saw was confusion.
He chuckled a little, “you’re weakest moment; a few days ago. Almost dying on a beach somewhere in the middle of the ocean.” She rolled her eyes and grinned a little.
“And you’re strongest.. was when you rescued me. The other’s wanted to leave me for dead.” He said, thinking back to the plane crash.
Y/N’s cheek’s flushed pink, “how do you..”
“Scott actually, on the plane ride back from our last mission. He told me how you refused to go with them unless I came with you. You knew I was in the wrong, you knew that. But you believed there was hope for me, and standing up to your teammates like that. Well that takes guts. I hated it here and I cursed whoever brung me here everyday, but now.. now it’s not so bad. And that’s thanks to you.” He told her, watching her avoid his gaze.
“Well, I couldn't leave you for dead..” She mumbled and looked up at him. He laughed a little and shook his head.
Warren nodded once, “I’m glad your okay.”
Y/N hummed in agreement before spinning on her heel and exiting his door, “goodnight, Warren.”
“Night, Y/N.”
+
A month later and the two had become almost inseparable. Every afternoon, Warren and Y/N could be found out on the grass, practising techniques and training. Every dinner, they would eat together in Warren’s room.
The first time they kissed, the team happened to be watching from a distance. Not as creepy as it sounds. They were watching them train, and Y/N was clearly kicking Warren’s ass. But then Y/N accidentally knee’d him, you know where, and everyone flinched as they watched Warren sink to his knees.
“Warren!” Y/N gasped as she dropped in front of him. She couldn’t help but laugh out of shock.
“Oh it’s funny is it?” Warren asked her as he sat up taller, face still a little red.
Y/N covered her mouth and shook her head, “no! No I don’t!” She shrieked as as Warren crash tackled her to the ground.
The team watched as Warren hovered over her before kissing her. What shocked them ever more was the way Y/N’s hands went around his neck.
Peter almost crushed his can, Jubilee was jumping up and down, Jean could only watch with a smile and Scott, Ororo and Kurt were all confused. “Way to go guys!” Jubilee cheered with her hands cupped around her mouth.
Warren and Y/N broke apart and look at the team with smiles before helping each other up.
They needed each other more than they knew.
So it wasn’t that the two young mutants hated each other, they were just confused. And it’s okay to be confused about these things. It’s love. It’s meant to be confusing, it’s meant to be painful. But if you’re suppose to be with that one person you care about deeply, it will all work out in the end.
~
uh so i never wanted this to end and i had a lot of fun writing it. and yeah! enjoy!

Welcome to the D-List: Hairball
Since early childhood, I’ve absolutely loved cats. My mother has never owned less than 2 of them, so I had a wonderful time playing with various felines as I grew up. While I certainly love all animals, cats have always had a special place in my heart, so I was extremely happy when I discovered this month’s D-Lister many years ago.
For the first two decades of his existence, Niels was exactly what you’d think: a pet cat. Writers never granted him more than a simplistic personality, and no one attempted to develop him as a character until recent years. Less than a decade ago, Niels was featured in a few miniseries where he was given plenty of characterization, but he has made only scant appearances since. Such a meow-velous feline, it’s time to welcome Hairball to the D-List.
Niels first appeared in Speedball #1 in 1988. Created by Steve Ditko and Roger Stern, Niels belonged to a scientist named Dr. Benson, who conducted research at a lab. Local teenager, Robbie Baldwin, worked part-time at the facility and wanted to watch one of Benson’s experiments take place. The scientist tapped into an extra-dimensional energy source, but the energy was accidentally blasted into the room and struck Robbie. The teenager learned that he had gained the power to create and direct a force-field of kinetic energy, which granted him the ability to move like a human bouncing-ball. With his newfound power, Robbie decided to become a hero and took the codename, “Speedball.” Robbie also learned that Niels was present during the experiment, because the cat gained the same power. Unfortunately, Niels became a predictable gimmick – Robbie would try to catch Niels, and the cat would bounce away.
While Niels wasn’t given an exceptionally original personality, at least he made more than just nominal appearances in a few stories. However, those stories were absolutely ridiculous. For example, a giant rat with a gun tried to kill local cats, but Niels managed to save one from harm. Later, alien-cats tried catching Niels with giant fishing nets (because fishing nets are certainly the pinnacle of cat-capturing technology). Niels did manage to kick (or claw) some ass, however, when he helped Speedball defeat a local criminal – Niels spat kinetic energy at the villain and knocked him unconscious.
I’m certainly grateful for some of what Steve Ditko contributed to comics, including Spider-Man and much of the hero’s rogues’ gallery, but surely the absurdity of its stories led to Speedball’s quick cancellation. However, Niels appeared shortly thereafter in the New Warriors series with Robbie as his owner, and the cat was granted thought-balloons. Unfortunately, he had a very stereotypical personality – Niels thought about terrorizing the neighborhood birds and eating salmon (stop feline profiling).
This cat had superpowers, so why wasn’t he involved in more action? He and Robbie could’ve teamed up on a regular basis – I’m sure plenty of fun stories could’ve been written. Alas, after years of no appearances, Niels was shown getting dragged through Robbie’s emo phase (Niels’ favorite band? Meow Chemical Romance). Speedball blamed himself for the destruction in Connecticut that killed hundreds of people after a fight with some supervillains went wrong. In response, he fashioned a costume for himself that was covered with spikes and changed his codename to “Penance.” Robbie stuck Niels in a smaller spikey suit and dubbed him, “P-Cat, the Penitent Puss.” Thankfully, this phase didn’t last long.
Later, in New York City, Niels was being chased by Aunt May’s dog, who was named Ms. Lion, even though he was a male. The extremely stupid dog thought the two were playing, even though Niels was clearly annoyed and threw energy balls at the canine (quite a hissy-fit). The Inhuman puppy, Lockjaw, learned that the infinity gems were missing and scattered around the world. Lockjaw and Frog-Thor decided to put a team of animals together in order to locate the stones, and dubbed themselves, “Pet Avengers.” Niels joined the team, and called himself, “Hairball.” Unfortunately, Ms. Lion wanted to tag along, much to the chagrin of the cat.
This was the first time that Niels was given a unique personality, and it was certainly a grumpy and sarcastic one. It was hilarious to watch Niels and Ms. Lion interact; the rest of the Pet Avengers seemed to tolerate Ms. Lion, but Hairball frequently made demeaning and even threatening comments to the dog. At one point, Niels even threatened to eat Falcon's sidekick, Redwing. I loved this cat with all my heart.
While Hairball certainly seemed like a jackass, he was a brave feline and always ready to fight. As one of the smallest members of the team, Hairball didn't have a size-advantage when the team faced Devil Dinosaur or Thanos, but he leapt into action and hurled energy balls at the enormous villains in order to secure the infinity gems. What Niels lacked in patience, he certainly made up for in heroism (but he should really smoke some catnip and mellow out).
The Pet Avengers helped Fin Fang Foom and some of his dragon buddies protect eggs which were buried under China for safe-keeping. The Avengers thought that the beasts were there to cause destruction, so the human heroes attacked the monsters. Since the Pets couldn't communicate with the Avengers, the animals simply tried to buy the dragons some time. Hairball fought Spider-Man, and hilarity ensued. Once the dragon's innocent intentions were clear and the situation was resolved, the Avengers gave the Pets their own mansion and Hairball had his own enormous cat-house inside (with a litter box fit for a king).
I loved Hairball's sarcasm, wit, and air of superiority. Regardless of his short temper, Hairball was an asset to his team. I wish that the Pet Avengers were given their own ongoing series, but unfortunately, the team was only featured in a few miniseries and haven’t appeared together in quite a few years. To my knowledge, Niels' most recent appearance showed him living with Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch. S.H.I.E.L.D. had been keeping Hairball caged in a lab, and Hammond rescued the feline.
I don’t believe that Hairball has ever appeared outside of Marvel Comics’ Earth-616 Universe, which is a shame, because this cool cat deserves more recognition. I’ve heard rumors of a New Warriors' sitcom coming to TV, so if Speedball is included, maybe Niels will also make an appearance. I certainly hope so, because there aren’t enough super-powered cats in pop culture. Could there ever be an “Avengers vs. Pet Avengers” movie? Fans can only hope.
So because Hairball is an animal, he can’t have as much of the spotlight as human characters? Way to practice speciesism, Marvel. However, I am very happy that a writer actually gave Hairball a personality. He might be a jerk, but what would you expect from a cat who lives in New York City? Regardless of his rough temperament, Niels has proven himself to be a hero, and it is my hope that Hairball continues to bring his courage and bad cat-itude to the Marvel Universe for many years to come.
