2022 Fic Fanwork Recs

Saw someone doing end of year fic recs and I decided I wanted to talk about fics. And then I started going through my ao3 bookmarks and realized I had a lot of vids I really loved in there. So under the cut (because even limiting to not too many per fandom and only things published this year this got long) are some things I've liked this year!

DMBJ

So Beat the Drum Slowly by Thimblerig gen: Wu Xie goes to A Ning's funeral I am the center of the target audience for this fic. I love A Ning and this gave me some actual closure over her death.

Wish Your Bed was Already Made by ilgaksu Wu Xie+Heihua I love ilgaksu's version of heihua always. Would recommend this fic for fans of all the times in Ultimate Note where Wu Xie is forced to third wheel them and for everyone who assumed Hei Xiazi put a tracker on Xiao Hua in the heihua movie.

Practical Applications of a Formal Education by Pandelion gen: 5+1 snippets of tomb adventures This is about the most important character in dmbj (Wu Xie's architecture degree). Fun tomb moments and character dynamics for everyone.

Pépito is Out by ladysisyphus iron triangle ot3: snippets of post-reboot hanging out I love the iron triangle and I love most of the ot3 hanging out being retired fics. This one also has a lot of cute visiting reboot characters and a very cryptid Xiaoge.

With Water and a Star by afrikate Hei Xiazi/Xiao Hua/Huo Xiuxiu (mind the metadata: this is the only tomb show fic I've linked that's rated m and not super short) The rare tomb show fic that's mostly about the politics of running mob families (tbh it's rare in canon too except for sand sea so maybe there's a lot of this in fics I haven't read for spoilers reasons): Huo Xiuxiu takes over the Huo family! Love to see her getting to actually be badass. I was skeptical of the ship going in, but this is a getting together fic for all the sides except heihua and it really sold me on the various dynamics.

vid: spike the punch by stellarer Ultimate Note. heihua vid!! this vid really gives you the sense that these weirdos like each other so much and is just really joyful to watch

vid: you're a 10 I'm a four leaf clover by absternr also UN, also a heihua vid!!! they're so weird and they flirt so weirdly <3 and this vid does a great job conveying that

vid: Still Not Dead by teyla multi-tomb show. Honestly if you're in the dmbj fandom and you haven't gone and watched all of teyla's multi vids, congrats, you're gonna have a good day today, go watch all their vids they're all great. This one is a bop but also a good thing to watch if you want to think really hard about Wu Xie as a character.

vid: I'm not your friend by absternr UN. My reclist so I'm gonna rec a little Ultimate Note A Ning vid where she gets to be hot and badass and not dead.

The Untamed/MDZS I've been in this fandom for over 2 years now, so my untamed fic recs are all things that are a little different from a lot of the stuff I've already read. If you're just kind of looking for a wangxian fic there's a lot of new good ones that I am not mentioning here.

the fair and the good and the brave must die by Lise wangxian... kind of. canon-era, during the 13 years Lan Wangji finds Wei Wuxian's angry resentful ghost and has to deal with that. This fic is upsetting and I love that.

grandmaster ranked in demonic cultivation by tshirt Jin Ling centric (Jin Ling & Jiang Cheng among others): modern ...league of legends au? as in they play league I know nothing abut league but this fic author clearly does and I love to read a niche au. Funny and also really really good characterization for both Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng.

年年有虞 | Sweet, but not too sweet by frostferox Jiang Cheng centric: modern au - elementary school Jiang Cheng has a bake sale Okay so you can tell who my favorite untamed boy is from this list :p but this is a really interesting take on what all the Jiang family relationships look like without the big stressors of canon. Also a fic about being first gen kid in a US elementary school.

vid: Fixer Upper by absternr Burial mounds vid! Lots of Wens (+ Wei Wuxian) feels about trying to build a home when everyone wants to kill you. This made me cry.

Nirvana in Fire

The Young Marshall's Ghost by ConvenientAlias gen: Mei Changsu solves a mystery After reading this I went back and read the rest of the series it's in, but given that I read it in this order, it obviously works as a standalone. Fun if you like to watch Mei Changsu be smart but framed more in a mystery way than a political drama way.

boiling point by caulkhead Lin Chen & Mei Changsu This should really have the exhausted character finally gets a nap tag. Lots of cleverness and friendship feels.

All the Distant Stars by BromeliadDreams Mei Changsu/Xiao Jingyan: scifi au This is one of the only setting aus that I've really liked in this fandom, but it's doing really cool things with how you come back different in a scifi setting. More running around having adventures and feelings vibes than political intrigue.

"The wise person avoids parties as far as possible" by Nemainofthewater Jingrui goes to a party (no not that one) choose your own adventure fic This is such a cool fic format and there are so many different possible endings

vid: Mei Changsu is climbing the mountain by sandalwoodbox general nif plot focus This is a remix of another vid (that is also excellent and you should watch) and it's a really cool tonal shift between the two vids. It's somewhere between saying something very serious about canon and doing something very silly.

vid: ...Baby One More Time by absternr Jingyan/Mei Changsu(or should I say Lin Shu?) Okay so I'm choosing the silly nif vids I guess but the thing about this vid is you go in being like haha a Brittney Spears song haha there were so many signs and you come out being like oh no Jingyan's lonliness is killing him I am so sad now every time. Which is the ideal nif vid experience imo, can't spell knife without nif, go have some feelings.

Misc Vids

Don't Worry Be Randall by lizardjay For Infinity Train but I'd rec it even if you haven't seen the show - it's just a charming animation of don't worry be happy

She Works Hard for the Money by teyla For Kinnporsche but you do not have to have seen the show. This is so funny, especially if you've ever seen any show that went hard on product placement. NSFW: don't watch it in public

So far by dirty_diana - fandom: Wheel of Time I saw this before I'd seen the show and then again after it - either way it's very atmospheric but having seen the show I also had a lot of feelings about friendships and the heroes journey and how you can't go home again.

And some ones where you do probably want to know the fandom

Satisfied by CherryIce - fandom: The Good Place Tahani character study! Lots of feelings about Tahani as a character and found family and bio family.

Bad Vibes by jonesandashes, pollyrepeat - fandom: Bridgerton (s2) Kate/Anthony I will admit I haven't seen any of Bridgerton s2 and am saying you should know the fandom on the strength of having read the books. But the real draw of this vid is it really gets that Anthony is a terrible awful garbage man but I love him and so does Kate unfortunately. Just a really fun time and a very iddy look at this generally very iddy ship.

#I have no idea how to tag this #vid selection is a little arbitrary because I was trying to not do a zillion and also going through just my ao3 bookmarks #which is separate from my saved vids on youtube #I also read a fair amount of svsss and tyk fic this year but I didn't have enough things that I a) really wanted to rec and #b) wasn't terribly embarassed about sooooooo #reclist #I'd love it if this starts a trend in my circles - I started making this because I ran into an untamed best fics of 2022 list #which I'll probably make my way through but I'm less into these days

thinking about dead mount death play again while i wait for my stupid gacha game to finish maintenance and im just so obsessed with the dynamics between certain characters and the parallels with others like (MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD) if i start thinking too hard about the corpse god & his emperor i start punching walls. for real. the love they have for each other. the devotion. corpse god was sold to the necromancer who raised him from then on but he CHOSE to love and devote himself to his emperor because they met and the emperor treated him like a friend and kept treating him as such even when the corpse god was killed and his teacher had to revive him as a skeleton because his flesh had been cursed to dissolve also i dont use their given names because those who havent read it deserve to be edged for 80+ chapters until the reveal. yes even the protagonist himself (corpse god) did not have his name reveal until that far in and then it was like, two chapters before he chose to call his emperor by name for the first time in over a century. whatever. the trope of being an adult child (eg. nowi fe:a, immortal but for some reason always looking like a child for fetish art purposes) is sooo (rolls my eyes) but with corpse god its less “he is a child at the age of 100+ to be weird” and more “he is a child because he died as a child and has not been able to grow past that point, emotionally, because he has not been able to move on from the context of his death” and now the circumstances of the body he is possessing tie in to the future path of him being able to fully move on from that (i hope) (i mean he cant stay in polkas body forever lol) honestly him being in a place where he can call for his emperor again after hiding himself from him for so long is (punching walls) (punching walls) (punching walls) his emperor is so funny crazy quirky the fact hes the emperor but hes like no no its my job to dirty my hands so my people dont have to and brutally tortures the guy who killed corpse god (he probably would have just murdered him instead if it werent for, well, who this man was and why he killed corpse god, but im being vague on purpose even as i ramble about spoiler content LOL) and tries (successfully) to be corpse gods lionheart instead of it being the other way around like okay whatever and dont even get me started on civil, sully and tshirt know how sick in the head i can get about that creature, but when i think about him in conjunction with corpse god i start shaking and clawing at my face. they are the same. but they are so different. corpse god was sold to his teacher but raised with love among people who genuinely cared about him and wanted to see him thrive (very unlike his home environment). civil was created for a specific purpose, to be a vessel for another, but instead that person never arrived and he became his own person - but how much of civil is civil, when you are raised by a cult who wants you to be the person they had revered in another world? when they are people not above torturing children, conducting violent experiments involving hypnosis and mind control and total obedience and the alteration of ones sense of self? how much of him is real? arius had envied corpse god for being loved when he, himself, cannot ‘get a handle’ on love; civil envies corpse god for being sold to someone who cared for him, for being raised in the world he has only been told of in stories, the world of his dreams, the world he was created but not born in - the world where his creator still resides, while he himself is left in this pale shadow of a life that was not supposed to be his to live...LIKE.... ok. ill leave this here. i spent ten minutes ranting about dmdp thats all i wanted to do. i have only broached the surface of things i want to pick apart. but only 3 people will want to read that when i finally sit down and write an actual essay or something about dmdp characters. god.

okay things are blowing up between my sister and my dad so...it's Jim hc time I need the escape

alright we were talking about he liked it when you touch his hair and you mentioned that you were sure he smelt nice and yes, yes he freaking does fmkmfkpfqe

but it's not because he wears tons of cologne or stuff, actually I don't see him as the kind of man who loves putting those awful "manly" perfumes that are so strong they make you dizzy, no, it's not like our soft boy Jim and he's different lol

anywayyy he smells like home. literally. im not saying this to sound poetic or whatever. he genuinely smells like home with a soft hint of aftershave and soap, it's a bit musky but it's warm and comforting

you can add to that the smell of his clothes, the fragrance of laundry just mixing very well with the rest

and I hope it doesn't come out as weird but I think he naturally smells very nice, like his body smell is nice so baby Jim is just the softest even on a genetic point of view lol

now to be poetic: he smells like soft words whispered to each other in the night, he smells like coming home after a long day, like rainy afternoons spent on the couch. he smells like a haven would, like peacefulness. just from his scent, you know he is your safe place, any of his embrace just wraps you in the most soothing fragrance, easing away all your troubles

so anyway it's a bit short and messy sorry but I'll come back with something else very soon, promise

just as a conclusion, you'd love hugging him just because of his smell (among the other factors), it's all very relaxing and being in his arms is probably one of the best thing in the world ❤️‍🩹

I also don't see him as the type that wears those over powered colognes, but passed that off as me projecting cause I hate them. The mild ones though, ugh, yes!

So when you say the soap and the aftershave mixed with the scent of detergent/fabric softer clinging to his clothes, I'm SOLD. The man smells so good. (So does his clothes lol)

The tshirts that he sleeps in sometimes.

The shirts/sweaters/tshirts you sneak from his drawers when you wanna feel extra cozy

Back to hugging him. Big agree on him smelling like home and all things comforting. And boy does he know when you need a hug or a good cuddle. Sometimes pulling you in on the sofa after a long day, maybe putting his arms around you while you're standing in the kitchen. And its just like, his warmth and the soothing scent of his embrace is just enveloping you and YES PLEASE.

As always, this was spot on and I just loved it 💕 And no need to apologize, good things come in small packages sometimes (I think that's the saying?) Take you time hun, I hope things straighten out soon and you're doing better by the time you see this

September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Authors, readers, and bloggers are uniting again his year to fight stigma, spread mental health awareness, and support the prevention of suicide. Two kinds of stigma continue to persist: public stigma and self-stigma. Public stigma occurs when other people view a person with a mental illness in a negative way. Public stigma feeds into self-stigma when people with mental illness internalize the negative talk they hear from others.

Well-meaning people say things like, "Suck it up," "Choose to be happy," "Turn that frown upside down," or "Focus on your blessings," as if mental illness were a mood, a frame of mind, or an attitude that can simply be overcome at will.

Often, people who suffer from mental illness blame themselves instead of seeking help. Just as a diabetic needs insulin, a person with mental illness may need treatment.

People who contemplate suicide don't want to die; they just can't fathom how to live because they are so miserable. They can't see past their pain and misery, and they see no point in going on.

According to the International Association for Suicide Prevention, "Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. It is responsible for over 800,000 deaths, which equates to one suicide every 40 seconds."

IASP explains that "[e]very life lost represents someone’s partner, child, parent, friend or colleague. For each suicide approximately 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected. This amounts to 108 million people per year who are profoundly impacted by suicidal behaviour. Suicidal behaviour includes suicide, and also encompases suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. For every suicide, 25 people make a suicide attempt and many more have serious thoughts of suicide."

If you're contemplating suicide, please don't do it! Instead, seek help. You might be suffering now, but you never know what tomorrow brings. Reach out to a friend or family member. See a doctor. If that doctor doesn't help, try another. Please don't give up.

JAPAN TRIP 2k19 with Mod Elesa (1/?)

hey n’yall it’s mod elesa, lemme tell u bout my japan trip! u can find some of the photos of these events on my instagram @atel2er! i didn’t want to flood this post with pictures hehe ,,

GENERAL STUFF

went for school, study abroad trip to study visualization and simulation of “serious games” that businesses buy and use (but i dont feel like talking abt it since this is the FUN POST

may 10-26

the flight was 11 hours, p easy, i didn’t know anybody going into the trip because i didn’t go to any of the meetings HAHhaHEHA

whatever. everyone on the trip initially came off as if they had yellow fever and i was like ... i’m really not trying to interact with FETISHIZERS

turns out they were all really cool! only this one kid was a real weeaboo who was greasy and tall and a neckbeard who kept talking about being “culturally insensitive” and speaking japanese constantly to the teacher and the TA like ... ok patrick we get it you flex

i stayed in a hotel in shinjuku! everything is so small and i used the bidets for the first time and WOO chile that shit feels FUNKY on your asshole

i visited shinjuku major (kabukicho aka red light district, couple other places!), ikebukuro (THE MEGA POKEMON CENTER), mt fuji, fuji q highland, akihabara, hamamatsucho (area where tokyo tower is), HARAJUKU, and the emperor’s palace! i’m probably forgetting some places since we went to a lot of temples and shrines that were cool ...

the public transportation in japan is scarily on time.. like, by the second. they apologize if they’re one minute early and will wait until the scheduled time before they move omg

the subway stations have their own jingles! they kind of act as an alarm system because a lot of people sleep on the subway (which is why people generally don’t talk on it) and will recognize the jingle for their stop!

the crowded hours on the subway are noon and 6-8pm... like, its insane. it’s actually packed like sardines in there.

EVERYONE THERE IS SO SHORT.... i was taller than a lot of the grown men there (i’m 5′4″ or 162 cm for reference) and most people were around 5 feet tall... the only people taller than me were some kids around my age and this gaggle of japanese schoolgirls who were like 5′7+ and i was like. sis you’re 13, why are you that tall

pokemon is EXTREMELY prevalent in japan wherever you go. there’s pikachu stickers on taxis, pikachu is on ads on the subway and at the AIRPORT, pokemon go is widely played by a lot of people and so many of the people in my group played it so i got conned into playing again. i leveled up 5 times within 3 days and honestly? i’m god

anime is very normal there... i know that sounds all “weeby” but a lot of normal shops had animated mascots and there were ads for anime all over the place.

literally gacha machines everywhere i spent a lot of coins on gacha machines plz kill me

the homies in japan loooove crepes. they sold so many crepes. everywhere. just crepes. also spaghetti carbonara! and corndogs HAHAHA

the food there is so cheap but SOOO GOOD. sushi isn’t all that expensive at all?? like a set of 16 pieces is 1080Y... meanwhile that cost in america is like. $6000 HAHAHAHAH.

very humid? at all times? also the RAIN is debilitating if u make one wrong step you will slip and die (like i did! i stepped on a tile and fucking fell into a puddle! i have bruises still!)

SHINJUKU (detective pikachu day, may 10)

i went to go see detective pikachu on its release day in shinjuku! before that, i went to a couple sega buildings--

the sega buildings are 4 story buildings FILLED with claw machines holding stuffed animals, figurines, candy, all kinds of stuff. when i went, there was a lot of detective pikachu-related stuff. i saw this detective pikachu hat in one of the machines and spent 1000Y (about $10) or 10 attempts at the claw machine ... i still can’t believe i got it ... nobody was there to see it besides me and i YELLED when it dropped

i wore the hat that entire day around shinjuku because i honestly felt like god. people would point at me and go like “ah! meitantei pikachu!” and smile at me. i was a celebrity. i wore the hat into the movie theatre, i wore it through the entire movie, and when i was walking out, someone tapped on my shoulder and asked for my picture. she was all nervous about her english and was like “i love your hat. may i take a picture?” and i was like omG YES U CAN... sweet bab... so that’s the first photo of me that ended up on some random person’s phone

we waited around for the mass of people to exit the theatre and then left, and we ran into her again! she asked me more questions about the hat: “did you make it?” “no, i got it in a claw machine in the sega building.” she looked dumbfounded. “in shinjuku?” “yes.” “in the sega building? over there?” “yeees.” “in a claw machine?!” “yes!” “ah! i thought you made it! it’s so cute! i’m going to get one for myself.” “lol ok have fun”

i learned that its customary to stay until the very end of the credits before leaving a movie out of respect for the people who made it! meanwhile in america we walk out when the credits roll FHDSKFJS OOPIES

SHINJUKU (visit #2)

we went in the night time to go see the red light district aka kabuki-cho because thats where a lot of the bars are

i don’t drink so i didn’t join the people who went to the bars to get CRUNK, so i dragged two other guys with me and we walked around the red light district

I SAW SO MANY HOST CLUBS. so many maid cafes. so many bars. i saw a love hotel too... i was like... i wanna go inside... Blease... and my friends were like “you’re so weird KHEDJFSk” and im like “I WAS GOOGLING THESE IN CLASS TODAY, I DIDN’T THINK THEY WERE REAL”

my friend sean (he’s from taipei, cool guy, could read a lot of the kanji so we used him to navigate the subway HAHA) was walking with me that night and we saw this hole in the wall that had stairs going down to a peep show ... homegirl had her whole ass out on the sign... tiddies covered with caution tape ... i said MAAM?

one of the signs in kabuki-cho had a woman doing straight up ahegao with (what i’m pretty sure was) nut on her face. it was a small sign and i was the only one who saw it. i lost my shit. it was the funniest thing ever

kabuki-cho is really really dirty... like people straight up litter all the time bc there’s no trashcans around? so people throw their shit on the ground? and everyone steps on it... very seedy area, very gross, but i was absolutely enthralled with the nightlife and the blatant sexual vibes half the places had!

some dude stopped me and started speaking english saying “do you like karaoke? you should come drink with me for two hours, it’s a great price if you drink a lot” and i was like “no... i have to go home” and he’s like “come onnnn it’s a good price” and i was like. i’m not very assertive with men so i started panicking and my friend sean (A GOD AMONG MEN) started speaking chinese to him and he backed off ... i love you sean you’re so fucking COOL

IKEBUKURO (pokemon mega center)

so there’s this huge mall. i forgot the name, but it’s got like a lot of floors and they’re MASSIVE

on the 2rd floor is the MEGA POKEMON CENTER!!! i was so HYPED to go in there!!! it was teeming with people but there was just... so much stuff. all kinds of merch. they had plushies of the original 151, a shitton of really cool tshirts, a whole block for detective pikachu-themed merch (pins, socks, canvas bags, shirts, patches, hats, etc), and sooo much more. there’s a giant charizard statue when you walk in, as well as a statue of a pokestop HAHA. i was so excited and i wanted to buy so many things when i was in there bc they had stuff for all the legendaries (LATIOS AND LATIAS STUFF WERE THERE I WAS SO HAPPY)!!! literally anything you can think of, they had in some kind of pokemon print. including underwear. yeah i said it. here’s a really good article that showcases some of the stuff they sold there!

for reference, 100 yen is about 1 usd. a lot of things there were 480 yen ($4.80) or 3000Y ($30) and it was just... beautiful.

when i was there, yen didn’t feel like it had monetary value since it’s not the currency i’m used to, so i sPENT WAY TOO MUCH AHFJKDFD

they had themed cash registers with each of the starters... i cried :’)

there’s this giant tower called radio kaikan thats right outside the akihabara station that’s filled with all sorts of anime shit. i spent so much money in there. Good God. there was a furret plush for 5400Y and i was so STINGY that day i shouldve BOUGHT IT.... it was a longboi and i was like... sis!!!!

remember how i said my brain didn’t register that yen had monetary value? yeah i spent hundreds of dollars here no cap ...

OKAY SO. there’s this place called super potato that has a floor dedicated to old games and consoles. they had so many gameboy advances and gamecubes and old consoles (famicom, dreamcast etc) for CHEAP. they had a gameboy color for 4900Y and a gamecube for 5600Y. a bitch almost cried. they had every old pokemon game under the sun (the original red, blue, yellow, gold and silver) and i ,,, they were 480Y. they were 480Y. that’s five fucking dollars. do you know how much collectors pay for that shit on ebay? HUNDREDS. i could’ve mass bought those and sold them and made so much cash but I DIDN’T.

that store had an original unopened copy of super smash bros melee and pokemon colosseum and i was like... wait if i cop a gamecube i could play pokemon collosseum like a true g... ((i didn’t cop))

but anyways there were a lot of games that didn’t make it to america (including mother 3! which my friend connor bought! as well as the console to play it!) and just... so many old things i grew up with ...

FUJI Q HIGHLAND (also known as the time i flipped my shit and went on rollercoasters)

when i found out about fuji-q, i told my group that we HAD to go. i didn’t want to go to an onsen. i wanted to go to fuji-q. i had to. i love rollercoasters, it’s my passion, my driving fORCE IN LIFE

so fuji-q is home to 4 record-breaking rollercoasters! u got fast boi aka jojo reference do-dodonpa; EXTREME TALL BOI fujiyama; superior to x2 at six flags eejanaika; and the steepest rollercoaster in the world TAKABISHA ... i got to ride fujiyama, eejanaika, and takabisha! the scariest one was probably fujiyama despite it being very cut and dry up for... ever ... 79 meters ... oh god ... i lost my shit on the way down ladies let me TELL YOU

FUJIYAMA ALSO HAS A VIEW OF MT FUJI AND I WAS LIK E”YO GUYS ITS MT FUJI” and then we went down and i screamed

anyways the fuji-q park was having a sword art online collaboration when i visited, so they played SAO music and had cardboard cutouts for them across the park... kirito’s ride was fujiyama (aka the king of them all). i forgot the other ones but those alicization kiddos were there but ion care about ALICE OR EUGEO

the first ride i went on was eejanaika which is a 4d rollercoaster, pretty epic, total Baby Ride though

i went on as a single rider so i ended up getting put in this group with these college kids! the guy i was sitting next to spoke to me in english and asked basic questions: “where are you from?”, “is this [ride] easy for you?”, “how old are you?”, basic stuff. he asked why i was in japan and i told him i was studying at waseda university, and he immediately perked up and went “I GO TO WASEDA!!! WASEDA YEAH!!!” and fist bumped me ... his friends were giggling and kept asking him to ask me questions and it was just. so wholesome.

when we were abt to get on the ride he looks at me and says “my name is soichiro. call me so-chan ok??” and i was like... “so-chan” and his friENDS ALL STARTED GIGGLIGN AND I WAS LIKE U///W///U

while we were going up on the ride, he kept yelling “JESUS FUCK YOU JESUS CHRIST” and my favorite: “JESUS CHRIST WHAT THE FUCK YOU” because apparently fuck cannot be standalone! “what the fuck you” is my new fave insult (i miss you so-chan)

afterwards he kept coughing and was like. dead. his soul left his body. so i asked in him japanese like,,, “daijobu ka?” and he was like “nai.” and i just laughed at him bc BA B Y SO-CHAN CANT HANDLE SOME SPINS

i bought a corndog at fuji-q at this place called arirang hotdog which is a korean style hotdog place??? BRUH that shit is so good but i shat myself for a good minute afterwards ... damn i want those corndogs

Wants not needs etcetera

I love a bloody maraschino cherry. It’s fun to say- like Schiaparelli and Moschino- and is my favourite aesthetic: trashy chic. You can’t have an amaretto sour without one and they glow in cocktail glasses like clown noses. Apparently, according to my new podcast find that I episodically devoured, the ordinary jars of cherries are dyed. First bleached then dunked in red food dye. No more. Luxardo is what they recommended, it looks very chic. I went with haste onto the Dan Murphy online store (the only retailer I get daily emails from) where it is sold out.

My sometimes shopping strategy is to find a random person/store on instantspam via someone I follow and scroll to see their interiors/ clothing and their tags. Sounds mad but I have found many a gem. It’s like word-of-mouth marketing via, what, ghosting? Anyway, I have been trying to find a very thin yet warming skivvy. It is almost spring because magnolias have started to bloom and I am still looking. The good thing is that many stores are now having mid-year, end of winter sales. I went to instantspam. This top (yes not a skivvy) called the Vein Long Sleeve by a European brand Base Range, is perfect. It looks like a cousin to the textural Wobble tshirt by Pageant. It’s minimalist ruffle! Like frilly seaweed, in the colours of, well, blue veins and red...arteries? Too thin. Spider veins and capillaries? It is, of course, sold out, but I have found a black SKIVVY in XS that is worth the size risk and price.

Another item of clothing I want but absolutely do not need is this Devo knit by Scottish label Hades. This ticks many boxes: subtle referential statement that is not obnoxious, niche, warm, no displeasing V-neck. The downside is the cost. Bella Freud knits are cheaper, and this is even before you convert it from pounds! It also seems very un-Devo, in that sense. In fact this whole consumerist list is. Oh well, freedom of choice. And guess what? It’s sold out!

Claw, butterfly, spider, octopus. Which is the odd one out? Actually whatever you call them, a hair clip is a practical and now fashionable again asset. I have long hair that I arrange into a bouffant shape everyday. I was walking through H&M, hovering around that section on the runway to the check out. Inside one box were various black and tortoiseshell hair clips and lost among them all- a single transparent one. This is the ideal option to me as a) it provides contrast to my hair colour (black just disappears), b) goes with everything, c) has a clinical sci-fi feel to it, no idea how to expand on this but it’s the vibe I am getting. I pin them to my coat lapels and handbag straps. I found it impossible to find this version anywhere. No one wants clear butterfly clips, why?! This is where I bought my back up from: eBay.

Since I am all fashion, here is another. I like the idea of ‘chartreuse’ but what I actually like is a greener version. The ideal colour being what I call, ‘a field of spring grass with voltage running through it’; electric green you know. This Jac + Jack tshirt looked good online, blendable with other tones and clothes and I had a discount. They call it ‘Jungle’. When I got it I found the colour that came to mind was ‘Dud Avocado’. Still good. I guess. In this economy. *Still need to read the book.

I would buy a Costco bulk of this cocktail napkin and of various others slogans: ‘If You Met My Family You’d Understand’, ‘O Come All Ye Thirsty’, ‘Don’t Confuse My Tolerance with Hospitality’. I believe in Victorian times fans were used to communicate secret messages, yet this is 2019. In a fictitious world where nothing we do is of consequence and can be fixed with Ctrl+Z, I would walk over to the targeted guest and silently hand over a napkin with ‘Don’t Talk About Yourself We’ll Do That After You Leave’ printed in a harmless serif script font. These seem very America and I’ve found them in an online store called White Squirrel Shoppe.

As with anyone who has pursued a graphic design degree, it is assumed you are familiar with some of the Big Names. Like David Carson Chipp Kidd, Paula Scher, Sagmeister, and the juggernauts like Paul Rand, Milton Glasser and so forth. The Uni library had tomes by and about all of them, including Tibor Kalman whose advertisements for a New York restaurant called Florent using typography as imagery is still one of my favourite pieces of design ever. Anyway, I like Tibor Kalman’s work because he did the kind of design I like-, that being all encompassing: illustrative, digital, tangible, joyful. Just google his Sky Umbrella or click this link. That umbrella reminds me of a design (pictured above) by Swedish brand called Happysweeds that is maybe even more optimistic.

DigiFes

It’s a long day folks. We were up at 5 to get to the venue by 7. You aren’t meant to line up until 8 and goods weren’t meant to go on sale until 10.

Heaps of people were there earlier in a somewhat orderly fashion. But management decided to fuck us all around and said we needed to line up from the opposite end of where we were. This may not seem like a big deal, but remember items are limited and resellers are a thing. This was a chance for people who arrived later to get to the front.

There was a literal stampede. People were screaming and being shoved. I was separated from my group numerous times, and only got back with them due to shoving others and the kindness of other fans who clearly realised I was with the other foreigners.

To get to the other side, management made us go in a complete circle. It was unnecessary and quite frankly, a little dangerous. It didn’t stop people who were there earlier from being close to the line, or help those who arrived on time be rewarded. It was just bad planning.

Of course, then it started raining. Umbrellas went up and if I hadn’t of been wearing glasses I would have been poked in the eye more than once. To say it was unpleasant would be an understatement.

The line slowly shuffled along. Every now and again people behind us would start pushing like mad, despite the fact that the line wasn’t moving. It was 35+ degrees Celsius, no air con, everyone was a bit hot and bothered. These jerks were not helping or doing anything to get the line moving faster.

If you follow my snapchat and/or twitter, you may have seen me mention the kindness of fans. This specifically refers to one lady in line who let me stay under her umbrella with her and who talked to me when I was separated from my friends. It also refers to another girl who kindly returned one of my badges to me.

You read that right. The lines and shoving were so bad, numerous people were having items ripped off their ita bags.

I don’t care where you’re from, that’s disgusting. It’s unnecessary, rude and disheartening. We’re all meant to be fans of the same thing and we all know some of these items are expensive or rare. The fans who were helping others get their things back were the MVPs of the day. Everyone who pushed and shoved can eat dog food for the rest of their life.

Goods started being sold early, at 9. Most likely due to the feral crowd. We were only a little over 100 people into the line, but by the time we got there, all of the keychains had sold out, as had some other items. On the other hand, by the time the first session finished, most items were sold out yet the amount of tshirts left was overflowing. Whoever did the math in the product department really needs to be fired. So many goods were gone, and the badges being so limited was honestly appalling. They want our money and Tri is a pretty blatant cash cow to the point it’s disgusting, yet they limited the badges (among others), one of the few things people are happy to buy quite a lot of, to such a small amount. Very bad planning. Lots of people were disappointed and trading was mediocre as a result.

We left the building just after 12. We’d spent around five hours lining up, buying goods and trading. We went to a supermarket and got some food, and since we had our trading stuff still out, a little girl came over to talk to us. I was with people who got Meiko badges (so many people did) and they didn’t want her, so they gave the badges to the little girl and her brother. A new set of Digi fans in the making???

I ended up trading the Koushirou acrylic stand to THE Koushirou fan. She lost her shit. In exchange I got ‘frontier no debu’ (the frontier fatty). She couldn’t remember Junpei’s name ;;; I also traded something else (Omegamon?) for LadyDevimon which is an A++++++ trade, tho the other girl was very confused as to why I wanted LDevimon. I SO regret not ordering that figure it’s sooooooo beautiful!!!! They had the prototypes for the sibling figures as well, and I can’t wait until the Yamakeru one is mine, they’re so cute!!!

For seats, I was in the fifth row, pretty much in the centre. Before you went in they had the life size AguGabu duo. One kid was like ‘um, no thanks!’ when his mum made him have a photo with them and I ended up sitting next to him. The girl on my other side was there for the first time too and pretty much cried the entire time haha

So first up was a talk and the reveal of the twitter poll. Nobody believed Jyou has a girlfriend – everyone thought that scene was the funniest moment. This happened a few times during the conversation. Every time it came up, his VA would just stand up, shrug and go I DO TOO HAVE A GIRLFRIEND.

Meiko got a lot of support – Junko (iirc) said she supported Meiko because ‘she moved to Tokyo from the country’. As someone who lives in rural Japan, I can totally relate! Literally nobody supported Yamato lmao

I apologise that it’s short, but it was funny and interesting, but I can’t remember a lot of specifics sorry ;;; Fans and staff were shocked Leomon died. Like, have y’all ever been involved in this franchise????

Mini live – Miyazaki then AiM. Most people are only familiar with adventure stuff tho, which is kinda sad. It is also the main focus of fes so it’s understandable.

Next was advertising. Basically the figures, Agumon being in Appmon etc. Unfortunately, they showed a lot of this pre-show while we were waiting, so it was pretty dumb and pointless unless you came in just before the show started :/

The trailer, obviously online now, made people excited. I’m hoping Hikari goes dark either because of Taichi, or she tries to fight Takeru and Taichi gets in the way and gets hurt hehe~ Nobody really spoke about it tho.

Next was the drama segment. Essentially, there’s a singing contest and the winner gets an all you can eat buffet with them and friends. Obviously, with nine kids and mons, that's a great prize! Yamato wasn’t there due to his VA being ill, which came up a few times.

They all sung their chara songs, which was a little dull tbh. If it had been last year, it would have been great promo for the cds, but this year it feels too late and they didn’t want to put effort into a full drama.

Jyou ran off because the pressure made him have a bad stomach. Gomamon tried to bring him back and failed. Gabumon tried to bring Yamato in but failed but Gabu sung. Most of the cast didn’t sing. Hikari and Gomamon sung. Takeru did as well, Patamon blew him out of the water since it’s Seiyuu was jumping around and being cute.

Mimi sung I wish iirc and then started with Super Girl. AiM came out and they duet’d. It was pretty rad and you can hear how close new Mimi is to AiM’s Mimi. Palmon was like ‘wow two Mimi’s!!’ and Koushirou was ??? a little confused by past and present versions.

Agumon’s seiyuu ROCKED Agumon Sunba and then Agumon Ondo (fit will since it’s matsuri and obon season). I would drink with her any day of the week. The seiyuu and lifesize Agu Gabu all joined in to dance, and it was cute how some of them had no clue what they were doing.

Meikuumon also sung. Weird to see the VA do the voice change so quickly. And she’s so tall??

Anyway, Agumon won and Mimi was low key pissed. “I lost to Agumon? That’s kinda…”

Then, the new song. Aikotoba. Holy shit it’s pretty. It’s very soothing, their voices work so well together. Please buy a copy of the CD!!!! I haven’t heard a single person say they didn’t like it. Wonderful song and lyrics.

Of course, everyone sang Butterfly. They had Wada-san’s performance from the time when they announced tri, which was special. Everyone gets kinda emotional. It’s definitely a moment where everyone feels like family.

In the group photo, I can’t be seen but I can see my light stick lol Most people had red or blue, so I chose green to represent Mimi (no point in representing Yama if he isn’t there lol). So it was easy to figure out where I was haha

By the time we left it was 4ish, and by the time we got home it was 9. A very, very long day, but a mostly eventful and amazing one <3

Time

On a small farm next to a tiny lived a bubbly little girl named abby. She was eight years old but only looked six with skinny shoulders and short legs. Even the blond hair that her mother forced into curls every morning was childish. She didn't complain though, at least she was allowed to wear her muddy jeans and torn tshirts around the farm. Her next door neighbor Billy wasn't allowed to. One speck of dust sent his mom into a rage. Why she lived on a farm no one could understand, but she did, and spent all her time cleaning the small house on their property.

Most days her and Billy would walk along the fence that separated them and make up stories for awhile before chasing each other inside to watch a movie before our nightly chores started. Today was different she had something special for the last day of summer.

She got up at six and fed the goats, cows,and chickens before taking the eggs and placing them gently in her basket. She then quickly swept the layer of dirt off the back porch that came back every day no matter what. Once she ran back inside her mom was ready with breakfast and the curlers and a brush to force the tangled mess into a beautiful cascade.

When the torture ended she ran upstairs and grabbed her bag stuffed with everything they'd need right as she heard a knock at her front door. Her feet slipped on the wooden floor but she made it just as her dad opened the door to let a heartbroken Billy inside. His brown hair instead of lying flat flew everywhere and his perfectly cleaned shirt looked rumpled.

His mom stood behind him angrily waiting for him to speak, when he didn't she pushed him out of the way and spoke directly to abby.

"He's going go private school today and won't be back until Christmas you can say your goodbyes now but we have to catch the train soon." Her words stunned the poor girl as she looked at her friend for the last time. His crestfallen face gave her the courage to ask one favor.

"Can we please bury our time capsule first? I promise we'll be quick." Her eyes flashed and I could see the word no form on her lips when his father spoke from the car.

"Go on. You better hurry." Neither of them thought to think twice as they ran through the house and out the back door heading straight towards the willow tree that sat on the back corner of her property.

When they were safely under the protection of the leaves abby took the small shovel from her bag and started the hole as Billy arranged the items in the box. A few toys and a lot of pictures of them both along with two notes covered in inside jokes. All memories they didn't want to lose if he went away.

Just as the shovel was digging its last few scoops of dirty abby hit something. She thought it was a root at first until she hit it again and heard the clang of metal. She dug around the large object and pulled it out of its safe hole. She wanted to look more throughly but Billy needed to go. So they packed their box into the hole and made a pact. 10 years from now when she was 18 and he was twenty they would come back and open the box together. Billy ran back to the waiting car while abby sat and watched him through the leaves with a freshly filled hole on her left and a heavy bullet like object on her lap.

She looked at the box in her hand and felt its weight, it was heavy but felt almost empty on the inside. She lifted it higher and shook the container a few times hearing a rattle like something was inside. There was no way to get inside of it though, no creases or dents showed a spot to twist or prod, and the bullet was soon forgotten in her impatience.

It sat on a shelf in her bedroom for ten years hidden behind books that kept changing from year to year. Her hair grew out and was no longer curled, her dirty jeans became clean and her tshirts could never be torn. It had been ten years since Billy had left, two months later his parents divorced and sold the farm. She had hoped he might come by over a winter or summer break but he never did.

Now it was her time to leave, she had said goodbye to her friends and her school. She had packed up her clothes and placed them all inside the tiny beat up red car she'd gotten for graduation. She had one day before orientation started and she planned on wandering the farm one last time and opening the capsule alone.

She walked to the backyard and saw the smattering of animals in their own little areas while her father worked in a field where he became just a dark dot among the golden landscape. She shuffled along feeling the weight of a metal bullet in her old backpack as she made her way to the tree thinking about Billy and all they'd missed out on. She had gotten a few letters over the years all about how awful it was and how much he wanted to be back. She sent encouragement with pictures as she tried to not show how much she missed her best friend.

Those stopped on his sixteenth birthday when her letter was returned unopened when a note saying he left. She hasn't heard from him for four years and it almost felt like torture. She could no longer face the pain she felt so she cut her walk short and ran to the tree covered in thick green leaves. Entering the cool empty spot she couldn't help the cry that came out. Leaving everything behind meant she would no longer be able to wake up to him waiting for another adventure. She had to move on. She opened the bag and grabbed the shovel and the metal box out of the bag ready to start.

Just looking at the spot she'd marked made to heartbreak worse so she turned toward the box instead. She'd tried to open it a few times over the years but never made a dent in the metal. Yet somehow as she looked at it now, she noticed along a small rust spot near the top that held a back hole in its center. She grabbed the shovel and hit it again and again against the metal until a gash appeared wide enough to let something small drop out. A small locket and a note hit her hand.

The locket held a picture of someone who looked just like her and young man with brown hair styled in an old fashioned bowl cut. The note said simply

'wait for me'- love B

Knowing it had to be an ancestor didn't help her feelings of sadness at the letter. The mystery was gone and she felt only defeat. She placed the locket around her neck and the shovel next to the marker before standing up ready to leave her childhood behind her.

When a shadow fell against the leaves she figured her father wanted one last chat so she pulled the leaves apart just to see an empty road leading back to the house. She took a step and then another before turning around and seeing the shape of a man vaguely outlined in front of her.

She shook her head trying to clear her vision but continued to see the otherworldly shape. "Either come back to me or leave me alone Billy." With that she turned and walked around her childhood home and straight to her tightly packed car. Only to find a twenty year old Billy leaning against the door in dirty jeans and a dusty tshirt with a wide smile on his face.
