honestly since its on my mind here is my rankings of jason ships off the top of my head:

jayt1m, bruj4y, j4ydick,j4ydami, jayt4lia, jaysl4de: theyre bad scoob. inc3st and p3do shit galore; jayt1m woulda been more bearable if tim hadnt been adopted right before jay came back, but still has issues esp re: how jay acted towards tim and tim being a minor while jay is an adult, ableit one very close to his age. tbh i dont trust anyone who likes any of these for obvs reasons. anyways jay has a rly interesting dynamic with all of them except slade tbh and making it romantic ruins it for various reasons, but also bc family is SUCH a driving point for jason!!!!

jaybabs: i am so tired of DC putting babs with every man they can lol. she deserves better. anyways i dont like it, the few interactions we see with babs and jay prior to him coming back have very older babysitter-like energies, she is supposed to be older than dick (who was already 18 when jay was 12!!) and has known him since he was a child its a weird age gap and they rly dont have a lot in common other than a shared trauma over the joker. its not good and does a disservice to what could be a good platonic relationship that could allow them to heal, esp jay.

jayroy: i prefer them as friends. they have such good energy with jay as roys’s friend’s little brother who somehow became his friend but as a romance its kinda dull to me, and im not the biggest fan of their age gap

jaydonna: only ogs will remember when DC tried to push that jay-kyle-donna love triangle on us lol thanks dan didio. honestly its not the worst, i could maybe see it, but donna being around dicks age still makes it a lil weird and the love triangle sucked. donna deserves better, but hey, its better than donnas canon husband tho!

jaysionis: no comment.

jayanita: yes this exists it appears in 1 issue of the young justice comic during the world without young justice storyline. in this jay is about 18 and alive, with something akin to his pre-crisis backstory. hes shown to have been in a relationship with anita, who i believe is around 16-18 and then he dies lol. would be interesting to see them meet in normal canon but anita hasnt appeared since like 2007 and who knows how old she’d be now with the wonky ages. has potential ig but its in a grey area.

jayrose: i feel like they have potential BUT it is ruined by the fact that it only ever seems to exist with them already together and interested in each other, with basically no build up or real chemistry as a result. it feels forced and more like out of a necessity to pair people up. they could have a fun dynamic, esp around damian but it feel like its never done right, and often at rose’s expense

jaykyle: their ages are vague due to varous timeline fuckery in DC but i always assumed they were both roughly college age by the time they interact, with kyle being a lil bit older . has a lot of potentiall imo but they havent interacted much in so long. got that sorta bad boy x tortured artist thing going on i like it.

jayconnor: tbh i would love to see them interact more. i feel like this is the superior jay/archer ship tbh tbh. i think it could rly work esp bouncing off each other with their different personalities but they still have a lot in common. they def should interact more now that connor is back in the comics.

jaysteph: speaking of ppl who need to interact more... DC has fucked with their ages a bit since they want to age up jay but not age up steph, so that is an issue, however originally they were only about a year or two apart (since jay is a few months younger than cassandra cain and steph is older than tim by about a year). they have a lot in common with their backstories and their roles in the batfamily so i think it could b cute! much better jay/batgirl ship than babs tbh... would love to see them just TALK. also funny to imagine jay rubbing it in tims face.

jaytemis: i rly like artemis and can see potential in this one so i really do like it! however scott lobdell is NOT the one who shoulda been telling their story and thus they suffer from his writing heavily imo. has a lot of potential and is def my fave bat x amazon ship.

@black-geek-supremacy - I keep saying, especially if DC’s cutting titles and streamlining anyway, just focus on writing one consolidated Batfamily title for awhile, like an ensemble focusing on the whole family AS a family as much as a vigilante fighting force. And not only could you count on all the fanbases of the separate disparate characters being consolidated behind that book and keeping it on the top of the charts like.....it completely snips the whole “none of the Batfam ever act like they even know or care what’s going on with any of the others” thing in the bud.

And not to mention, when you focus on just the Batfam as an ENSEMBLE and pretty much HAVE to spread at least some focus to all the individual characters, you don’t end up with them all constantly pitted against each other by the writers of their individual titles with their own personal character biases egging on the separate fanbases to constantly keep seeing it as a Highlander “There Can Only Be One” competition.

The real trick of it though, of course, is that you’ve got to get a writer who ACTUALLY likes ALL of the characters or at least can be professional not to just push their own personal character fave at the expense of all the others or even just one of the others.

Y’know, so we don’t end up with someone like Tynion writing Batman & Robin Eternal 2: Electric Boogaloo - Everybody Punch Dick Some More But This Time Put Some Kick In It Too!

And THEN once you have strong, consistent sales AND characterizations AND plotlines that normalize the entire family concentrating on a shared focus as a cohesive unit.....THEN you can expand from THAT foundation again, so long as you do it slowly and make it a priority that you don’t lose sight of the things about the shared Batfam title that netted the most success with readers.....and thus even as you once again expand into individual Batfam members have solo titles, you maintain that coherent consistency of keeping them visibly and narratively tethered to the core Batfam title and make THAT the center that all the other satellite titles orbit around. Rather than just the at this point vague, abstract “its Batman related, that’s theme enough” ambiguousness the Batfam franchise has, where there IS no clear center or core to the franchise - not even Bruce himself!

I mean, honestly, what do they have to lose? Tim hasn’t had a real solo since Red Robin and Young Justice and Teen Titans are already getting cancelled, Batgirl’s already BEEN cancelled, as has the Outsiders.....which means Tim, Steph, Damian, Babs, Duke and Cass are ALL technically at loose ends at the moment......and let’s be real, even the most diehard fans of Dick and Jason haven’t actually LIKED either of their solo titles for years at this point, and like, does ANYONE like Bruce the way he’s being written these days? Tom King shut up and sit down, nobody asked you.

*Shrugs* Of course, not like this will happen because lol we don’t get to have nice things, we’re Batfam fans, we’re here to suffer and say we like it, lmfao. Also DC’s dumb and they suck and make terrible decisions and ugh, what if they weren’t just the worst, asking for several thousand friends.

Here are some WIP fics that get updated regularly that I’m absolutely obsessed with.

The Birds Who Smile By Raberba_girl

I am, no joke, obsessed with this story. She calls it a ‘rough draft’ and it can be inconsistent at points because of it, but those moments are very minor and over all it’s amazing. It follows the recovery of the dark robins from Dark Knights: Metal, which I’ll admit I’ve never read, but this story is just incredible.

Robins and Other Flightless Birds by Ionaperidot

This story is about a Bruce from a universe where he truly works alone. But he came into contact with another Bruce and realized that he really liked kids, so he basically just kidnaps one of each of his kids from all different universes where, for whatever reason, their Bruce didn’t have them. It’s super cute. The only thing I wish about this story was that it was longer. haha

Multiversal Constant by Echoes_01

Damian and Jon get stuck in the Young Justice universe and get tangled up with the League of Assassins. Super cute, angsty. There’s a lot of relationship building between Young Justice Clark and Jon and Conner, and between Bruce and Dick and Damian. Baby Damian and Cass get introduced into the Young Justice World toward the end.

As for completed works, there are a handful I’ve read multiple times each.

Confidence Lost by C_R_Scott

This is a White Collar x Batman crossover. I’ll admit, I had never heard of White Collar, but this has a podfic for it, so I listened to it anyway one day at work and boy am I glad. I’ve listened to it 4 or 5 times and read it once. This story actually influenced Life Happens quite a bit, I think, with the character “Kate” and “Peter,” at least. Anyway. It’s about Tim going missing and ending up as the main character of White Collar, a dude who steals artwork and replaces them with fakes but got caught by the FBI so now he works for them. Damian and Dick find him in NYC like 7 years after he went missing and then chaos ensues. It’s really fascinating and has an awesome climax. Great story.

A Good Place by @lemonadegarden

This was one of the first fan fiction pieces I read. It’s about Damian going back in time and meeting Bruce just before the man takes in Dick. It’s cute and angsty.

Yesterday’s Voices also by Lemonade_Garden

This is about Bruce losing his memory and thinking he’s five years younger, and dad to just a cute smol Jason and a Dick who hates him. Instead, he gets back to the cave to find Damian, Cass, Steph, etc. Since he hasn’t suffered Jason’s death yet, he’s better at showing his emotions and it freaks the younger boys out. It’s great.

So I’m noticing a pattern in the works I like…. They all involve time travel, universe travel, or memory loss of some sort.

Ha.

Anyway. That’s totally not gonna be the plot of my next story. Nope, not at all.

It’ll be brainwashing.

Tim is kidnapped and brainwashed, and Damian feels guilty about it and goes after him and stages a rescue attempt. It’s angsty and heartbreaking and detailed and everything I want in a story.
