i am more than happy to give you karate kid requests! i just thought you would rather write for the cobra kai characters, so i never sent anything in. with that, would you be down to write something young!daniel x female reader where the two of them sneak out of class to make out in the janitor's closet? a bit smutty but not too heavy, mostly just focused on the kissing? it's a concept i find so hot but there aren't any fics out there for it. 😫 let me know if you get this ask because i know tumblr likes to eat them sometimes. take care!

Reader narrowed as she looked across the crowded classroom. Eyes falling onto her boyfriend who sat only a row ahead of her. His head was down as he finished working on his class assignment. Daniel always had a thing for trying to finish every single piece of class work before the bell rang. Because he was to lazy to take it home and do it for homework.

She rolled her eyes out of love for the boy and briefly looked away. In that split second her eyes meet the teachers. The older women sat at the front of the class at her over populated desk. Folders and papers where scattered over the dark stained wood. A large stack of book sat on the very corner.

“Reader would you mind running these up to the front office for me? Someone requested them and seeing as we aren’t using them, they need to be returned.”

Reader nodded quickly and studs up from her seat. She walked down the aisle and row of desks and passed some of her peers, no one seemed to take notice. She picked up the stack of books and tried her best to balance them in her grasp. The large stack wobbled a bit in her hold making her jerk a little. For a moment she thought they would tip out of her hands and fall to the floor. Luckily they didn’t as a pair of strong hands held hers steady. She sighed out on relief as she regained her balance of the heavy books.

A few books where removed and she was finally able to see who the person was who helped her. It was Daniel, he grinned her way as he took some of the books.

“Daniel if you could help her to the office with those? They are quiet heavy.”

“Of course miss! Be right back.”

Daniel gave a cheeky smile to the women before leading the way out of the class room. Reader was slow to follow behind him. The books weighing her down a little. They walked side by side as they made their way to the office.

Daniel smirked at her saying “So did you really need help or did you just want to to rush in and save the day.” He wiggled his brows at her. Rolling her eyes she scoffed “Oh yeah because I needed mister save the day to come to my rescue for some text books falling.” She tried to play off the earlier events. He chuckled at her clearly embarrassed expression.

“If it wasn’t for the fact that I love you I would have kicked you in the kneecaps.”

“Baby it’s to late in the day for that kind of violence.”

“Oh lover boy it’s definitely not.”

The trip to the office was quick to say the very least. The front office lady was to busy trying to organize returned piles of text books to even notice them. The two teens just stuffed to each other before setting the books down on the counter and leaving.

The wall back to class was more interesting then the walk up.

Daniel slowly inched closer to her until their shoulders touched. One of his hands snacking around her waist. He was lucky no one was in the hall way because he definitely would have gotten the two of them put into after school detention. He pulled her close, chucking a little and sucked hid front teeth. His lips where right by her ear when he said “How about we make a little detour for a minute. So we can have a little fun~”

Reader wanted to laugh as he tried to pull wool over her eyes. She knew what he wanted pretty clearly.

“We are not doing that in school today-“

“Not that, though I would be down for it. I mean a little kiss, or should I say a little kissing. Plural~”

They looked around for a split second to make sure the hall was still clear before taking off toward the closest janitor closet. Luck for them it was unlocked. Daniel quickly pulled her in and shut the door behind them, he flicked on a old dim light over head. It only brightened the room a bit and put a show of her face as he looked at her. The room was cramped, barely holding them.

Reader grew a little excited as they both tried to stay quiet. Hoping no one would hear them in the closet and get them caught. She had to cover her mouth to stop the small giggle that bubbled out as Daniel looked back at the door for a split second before back to her. He smirks as his hands find her waist again, running up her hips and sides. He bends down a little and moves closer to her. His eyes lidded as he looks down at her.

Their lips meet gently, soft and sweet. Daniel’s lips are soft and warm against hers. Pillowy and sweet and make her melt inside from just their very touch. She wished that she could lie and say he was a bad kisser, but he wasn’t.

Daniel LaRusso was a great kisser. He knew every trick in the book to make her knees week. He used his tricks to silence her every time their lips meet. Playing her like he knew every single button to make she swoon. She feel for it every single time.

Her breath hitched as he felt up her sides and ghosted over her breasts. He smirked into the kiss and swollowed every tiny noice she made. Moans bubbled up from her chest and passsed her lips.

Her eyes fluttering when his tongue slid along her bottom lip asking for entry. She allowed him to part her lips. Their tongues shyly meeting and playing together. Reader gripped onto the boys shoulders as things got more intense. Her nails digging into his shirt as they slam into each other. It’s only a matter of time before they half way part only to go back in. Lips meeting once again.

They are so caught up in each other they they barely register the sound of loud voices out inside the hallway. They jerk back from each other for a moment. Panting out they hold on to each other, a think layer of spit connecting them before it silently snaps. Ending their connection. They both stare at the door intently. Eyes never leaving the light stained wood door.

“Johnny that’s sick man! How did you score that?”

“Shit up man, don’t ask don’t tell. Now come on so we can go smoke this weed. That asshat principle almost caught us the last time we tried to light one up in the bathroom. I want to get one in before pe.”

The sound of Dutch and Johnny slowly faded down the hallway. Only the sound of their shoes lingered in the air.

Daniel coughed lightly, still flustered from the idea of possibly getting caught. Reader zipped her lips tight as she looked up to him. Eyes big and round. Blinking a few times to put on a little charm.

“Man you really try and act all innocent like I didn’t just have my tongue in your mouth.”

“Humm but I think you like that about me don’t you??”

She giggled as the boy sweeper down and smashed his lips to hers.

Starting a sloppy make out session all over again.

Cobra Kai Aisha and the kids aren’t alright going forward

I’d like to talk and hear thoughts about Aisha SPOILER not being in season 3. Really bums me out because her character is not the generic white girl, good or bad, in a love triangle. (Though a love interest and attention to that type of plot for the black female would be great!)

Aisha has so much potential in character role, conflict, and place as a balanced karate student.

She’s the only female in the show truly developed in that she has a role as the nerdy bullied friend she herself overcame for herself, a struggle with embracing her newfound karate skills and confidence with it’s aggressive and violent vices, her desire to include and form or reform her own group of friends, and her hierarchy within.

She’s the best thing showing off Sam’s divide between wanting safe popularity or rightness, in showing that double edge sword on girl friendship. With befriending Tory as clique outcasts, and wanting a girls of Cobra Kai, and a girl’s desire to bond versus their desire to rival for attention.

She’s the reasonable voice of Sam and Miguel’s issues but doesn’t overly involve herself in the drama.

She’s the student of Cobra Kai who sees it’s goods and bads.

Think of where she could go in season 3. She’s just witnessed and participated in a feud of futility, one of the few who shows regret. Which has been because her two closest girl friends are rivaling over a boy, and that boy, Miguel, is the one who suffers most. Who does she align with? How does she manage it all? Who are Sam and Tory going to talk reasonably with this year to develop their characters for themselves, that isn’t mired in toxic boyfriend drama or dojo drama? Her dojo’s teachings and friends are increasingly crossing her moral line. Who’ll highlight that if not her, especially with Miguel injured? She’ll have lost her sensei, her supports, and be questioning her confidences in friends and karate, and that’s compelling.

Not to mention she’s returning to a school year that would or should have Yasmine and the former popular kids handling the shift of their status versus Cobra Kai’s former bullied. How does she feel about herself versus Yasmine? Is she the new Yasmine? Or do they still assert dominance by their looks or wealth or say you losers are just violent and most likely dealing with expulsions and stigma from fighting publicly in school.

I mean her versus that would be awesome.

Same with Eli/Hawk. What happens to him now he was publicly beat? What happens when his mom finds out about his personality shift influenced by Cobra Kai, and not just his physical shift? Are the kids gonna still pick on him, perhaps more carefully, for this contrast? Is his Mom gonna try to take him out of Kreese’s Cobra Kai? Will Kreese face backlash from community and parents morally or socially from the school fight and aftermath attitude his students take?

I am far more interested in the fallout of the school fight in these ways than seeing who Sam devotes romantic grief towards, or in seeing Kreese make Tory a bad girl, when she should be an ostracized or arrested one at this point, or the strange ideas of rival dojos and Terry Silver or travelling to Japan to find a secret to defeat the new Cobra Kai.

The more outlandish Karate Kid 3 plot lines doesn’t excite me as much as more good meta on the cycle of school bullying, and how kids and parents react or don’t.

🐨 I feel like I’m overusing your asks, but you did give me an emoji and that’s more power than I should be trusted with.

A) your enjoyment of “kid” as a nickname is a MOOD! I have a coach who calls me “kid” or “kiddo” sometimes and I’m always like “yes! I am young! There is still so much LIFE to be lived!”

B) YES SEAVER IS SO PRETTY! She was young and pretty and had what could have been a cool background story; if they’d developed her better (also if misogyny wasn’t a thing) she could have been an awesome character. I don’t get why people can love JJ and hate Ashley.

C) Can I cash in on the honorary older sister thing? I have a karate evaluation coming up and it’s a BIG one (if I pass I’m on track to get my black belt within a year). And the band I’m in at my church is recording songs for the month and I was assigned a very difficult, extremely high song to lead vocals for. Plus school is, well, school. I know you’re still trying to figure out the whole ‘balance’ thing too, but if you have any words of wisdom? I also decided it would be a good week to update my inspirational quote wall, so if you have any inspirational/motivational song lyrics, TV/book/movie quotes, famous quotes, etc, that I should put up, that would be much obliged.

I hope you’re doing alright, too, with school and writing and everything. You’ve been writing SO MUCH and it’s been SO GOOD! I just read ‘do they even know?’ and OH MY GOSH!!!!!

Please don’t feel like you’re overusing, I love getting asks!! Sometimes it takes me forever to answer them (especially if they’re suggestions for things) but I do love them!

A) I KNOW!! There’s something so comforting about being perceived as young. I’m like: Yes. I am a child. I am under eighteen, and there is no need for me to grow up just yet.

B) ISN’T SHE??? Literally, if more than thirty seconds had been spent on her character, she would’ve been amazing. In fact, the problem with a lot of the female characters, like Strauss and Haley, was misogyny. They all had potential to be really strong, but also vulnerable but NOPE. People always say that Seaver was just JJ’s stupid replacement but like, put stuff with the network aside, and she really wasn’t... JJ was a liaison at that time. Ashley was a student at the FBI Academy...

C) I think I’ve gotten better with the balance thing this week. Slightly. What I did was, I set a timer for an hour and a half because that’s the longest I can work for without losing concentration, and then I took a ten/fifteen minute break. I also made a list of things I wanted to do each day so I didn’t get too overwhelmed and knew what needed to get done. SO: do not overwhelm yourself. Do not try and get everything done at once. Break it down into things that you find manageable. Maybe create some structure. And let yourself have breaks in which you do something fun. Give yourself rewards for each small task you do!!

But please, under no circumstances, do you use food as a reward. I know people are like: Oh let yourself have a piece of chocolate or something sweet as a treat but don’t do it. If you’re hungry and that’s what you want, just pause and get it or else you’ll fall into unhealthy patterns. Trust me, because when I was in year 10/year 11 I would do that and I started to notice that I was accidentally neglecting eating properly because I would go: Well I can’t eat that till I do this. And luckily, I kicked the habit early, but it was still a bad move.

And for your board... every quote in my bullet journal is kinda sad or dramatic, but here are some nice ones that I like from my list of things i want to hand letter at some point:

2. what activities have they participated in? Michelle is a bit of a Loner but she has done Cheer and writes Poetry in her spare time as well as mysteries. She also was a camp counselor & Lifeguard with Betty and Cheryl over the summer.

My Favorite Pokemon (That Aren’t In Sword and Shield) #1

Pokemon is, at its essence, a franchise based around it’s large number of playable monsters. It’s basically just a simple RPG, but the ability to pick out your favorite creatures from hundreds of options is what makes it so unique and endearing. While certain Pokemon are pushed as “the main ones” by marketing, it’s still a game where you can choose to surround yourself with only barnacles then have said barnacles save the world.

At least, it used to be. As of the release of Sword and Shield, over half of all the Pokemon have been removed from the game. There’s a lot of debate about this and why it was done, and while I will say that I think the game’s designers made the wrong move, I don’t really want to get into that right now. Instead I want to talk about some of my personal favorite Pokemon, monsters that in my opinion (and perhaps only MY opinion) have exceptionally good character designs. Monsters that will not be appearing in the mainline franchise for the foreseeable future, who are at risk of being forgotten entirely if there’s never any demand for them to be put back into the games. Here are my favorite Pokemon (that aren’t in sword and shield), presented in no particular order.

Kricketot and Kricketune

It love that “Bug” is one of the 18 “elemental” types in Pokemon. It both implies that being a bug is a superpower on par with being able to breath fire or do karate, and also insures that every new generation will give us a handful of bug-based monsters. So let's talk about Kricketot and Kricketune, bugs that exemplify some of the traits common to the type and also some of my absolute favorites.

Kricketot

Look at this little man. It’s got kirby-like stubby limbs, a big “nose” instead of any visible mouth, a completely blank expression, and best of all it’s stylized to look like it’s wearing a little fancy suit with a big collar. It’s extremely adorable and also looks absolutely nothing like a bug, it’s only bug-like trait being the pleasantly swirly antennae on its head. A small but still substantial number of bug-type Pokemon just look like little humans with bug traits, but Kricketot is such a cute and iconic man-bug that I’m not even upset that it doesn’t look anything like a cricket. In the Pokemon world the closest thing they have to a cricket is just a little buggy humanoid dressed like a musical conductor and that’s wonderful. Still, there’s something else about Kricketot that communicates it’s a bug specifically in the context of Pokemon. It’s bulbous “nose” and beady eyes bear a close resemblance to the face of gen 1’s bug-type Weedle.

Weedle was a bee larva with an inexplicable pink “nose” and no mouth (and also sadly another Pokemon we won’t be seeing in Sword and Shield). Right in the first generation Weedle taught us that a mouthless big-nosed face was a valid face for a bug. So by the time we met Kricketot, we were already predisposed to read this cute weird face as a “bug face”. What I’m saying is that Kricketot looks more like a bug if you’re already familiar with Pokemon. It’s design fits right in with the gen 1 aesthetic, just with more details.

A few last thoughts about Kricketot before we move on;

-My least favorite thing about it’s design is the bit between its antennae, it looks too much like it’s nose and I think the antennae would look more natural if they were just coming straight out of it’s head

-As a kid looking at the pixel art in Pokemon Diamond I perceived it’s collar as being round and fluffy, like a fur scarf. Seeing it as a flat disk for the first time with 3D models was a bit jarring, but ultimately that fits it’s conductor look more.

-Speaking of it’s collar, the females have bigger collars than the males which is probably one of my favorite gender differences in the series because there doesn’t seem to be any biological OR stereotypical reason for it to be that way.

Kricketune

Look at this thing, really take it all in. It’s a bug but it also resembles a string instrument like a violin or cello, but it also resembles a fancy orchestra man, like the kind of person who would play the cello that it also is. Magnificent. It’s a beautifully balanced medley of bug, object, and concept. It's “mustache” appears to be made out of modified antennae of it’s pre-evolution, but it also resembles the curly holes on the sides of a violin (sidenote: I just found out those are called f-holes and I don’t know how to feel about that). The antennae on its head look like conductor batons. And best of all, it’s got stabby forelimbs like a praying mantis (or I guess like a Scyther?) that also act as violin bows so that it can play itself like a violin and also probably skewer it’s prey. Kricketune is objectively very silly, but with those sharp forelimbs, which the pokedex actually describes as “knifelike”, and it’s blank buggy stare it actually looks a bit intimidating under all the stilly stuff. It’s like an ostrich or a hippo; it looks silly from a human viewpoint but it’s actually just a dangerous wild animal that can’t help the fact that it looks like it has a mustache.

I suppose now is the time I should mention that it’s not actually based that much on a cricket, but rather a violin beetle (sometimes called the banjo beetle instead, which gives me a great idea for a regional Kricketune variant). It shares its long neck and antennae with the real thing, but there’s so much more to Kricketune’s design that it doesn’t just feel like they plopped a real bug into the game and gave it anime eyes, unlike some other Pokemon. Also given that it’s a musical Pokemon based on a beetle, I think the translators missed the chance to make a rather obvious pun involving the name of a certain famous band. God now I’m really sad we can’t have Kricketune in Galar. Do you think Galar has a sport involving hitting a ball with a bat called “Kricketune”?

A few last thoughts on Kricketune:

-It’s cry is hilarious and the main thing everyone remembers about this Pokemon, which is too bad because the rest of it is equally hilarious.

-My least favorite part of it’s design is those extra lines on its face. It already has a nose, we don’t need those!

-I just love the color scheme of both of the Kricket-mons. The red, cream and black looks so eye-catching.

And that ends my review of two hilarious and charming bugs we will not be encountering again for the foreseeable future. Goodnight sweet crickets.

the black cat that I thought was a little girl twin of my handsome boy? nope! He’s an adorable little psychopath named Merlin! he loves people, is adorable, vocal, cuddly, his owners are this amazingly punk rock lady and this guy who could be like a secret badass punk nerd from accounting or something. And he’s a bit psycho ‘cause he does the whole “snuggle up to your leg to purr and cuddle you, ask for belly rubs, then will attack your hand”. My Zi doesn’t do that at all. He will give you maaaaaany warning bops with his back legs, no claws, before he begins to lazily warning bite you.

one: I am so fucking bi.

there was this couple heading home from a run. both of them were HELLA FINE. I mean, of the two I’d prefer the dude, but if I could have both of ‘em, then hell yes I would.

I have the preference namely because the lady was wearing matching pink shirt and scrunchie - and that get up on a wavy blonde made me think of that character from the Arnold the Armadillo show and I don’t like her as much.

they were wearing matching running tights, the girl was wearing pink and the guy was wearing orange (my favourite colour).

Both probably within my age range, maybe in their 30s.

The guy was super in shape, bony, broad, muscled shoulders and a runner’s taper.

Gal was thicc and had a face that looked like Denaerys Targarean (idk how the fuck to spell that name rn)

two: I’m living in my dream neighborhood, basically, and living my dream.

where I’m at, I just went out for a walk to a park - it felt like I was at a lake.

there’s dogs everywhere, and friendly people who own those dogs. people with stories to tell, who are happy to sit down and chat.

there’s beautiful people where I live. All sorts of beautiful people. (see revelation one: I am hella bi - and for any biphobes out there, remember that bi means i find more than one gender attractive. think about that for a sec, I’ll wait.)

there are couples in their 30s with no kids, so this place is fairly childfree.

there are people leading alternative lifestyles all around me, mixed in and living side by side harmoniously with neighbors who are more traditional. including couples even who are made up of a “normal” looking person and someone visibly living that alternative lifestyle.

today has been filled with so many LGBTQ encounters of other LGBTQ people living visibly out - whether they’re living out to prove a point, living out because it’s right for them, living out despite the fear, living out because it’s fun to, etc, etc. - that it makes me so happy to see.

there was a dude in this really fancy sports car - likewise somewhere in this 30s - which almost everyone at the intersection had to turn their heads to appreciate

there was this guy with a beard (beards are so attractive) balancing on this fancy looking road bike (god, I love bikes) - makin’ that choice for whatever his reason is, but it’s one I love because we need more bikes and less cars

on my way home, and this ties into the point below, I passed under a balcony where several ladies where having a girl’s night and discussing things.

and it turned into this awesome look on feminism in a way because they were talking about I think female genital mutilation (these are all ladies in their late 30s or older - lots of talk of husbands, etc) and how there’s so many women still having it done to them.

one of the ladies mentioned how some man in her life somewhere (she mentioned how she knew, but there was a dog I was distracted by when she explained, so I didn’t really catch it) was talking about how less girls get mutilated than boys or something. And she was like “well i don’t know the numbers for boys, but even if it is higher, that’s still six--(some ridiculously large number like 600 million or something, or 600 thousand...) and then that means there’s even more children being mutilated than that because the boys get mutilated more often.”

like, holy shit, a man engaging in “oppression olympics” when a woman was just trying to express her shock that any children are being mutilated - and that he was being excited for winning a gender competition for “whose gender is mutilated the most as young, helpless babies?!”!

holy fuck my shoulder hurts

I was thinking I could do this part as part of the stream of conscience further down, but I don’t think I can hold out that long.

So ok, I separated the AC joint (or something like that) in my right shoulder from some bungled board breaking I did during a parade with my karate club. Boards got rained on and my student and I still broke them.

I bungled this break only in that the first two elbow attempts didn’t work - the board was way too wet and it bounced both the elbows back. So I resorted to hammer fist to break it and boooooo. I wanted to elbow it.

But yeah, turns out I’m hurting.

But I’m not sure if I am or not. Again, this is probably anxiety? or maybe another revelation.

But like, I’m confused. Would a separated shoulder take 48hrs to fully onset in terms of the pain and symptoms? Cause I felt like I was sore, but still able to do thinsg. Then when I went in yesterday to see my chiro for a scheduled appt from way before the parade, I mentioned my shoulder pain.

he ran two quick assessments on me and diagnosed me with a separated AC joint. it’s on the mild side, but it’s still a separated shoulder he said. and since them I’ve been way more conscious of it and I wonder - is it because he told me something’s wrong and I’m “pretending” because I’m hyper-aware of any sensation in the area? Or did it really just take until now for it to start being so bothersome?

--- another aside within aside within aside: I’m starting to feel suuuuper sleepy.

but then also, I��m high. I’m high on 50mg edible THC and 1/2 a 210mg joint. I should be pretty medicated by now, we can all agree. And I do feel a familiar stoner feel from the indica. Nice heavy body feel. But through it all, my neck, shoulder and lat are just screaming at me occasionally.

Especially my neck.

And my shoulder when I go to use my right arm - reaching, etc. OHHHHHH!!!! It hurts more today than yesterday because I did karate this morning!!!!! And I pushed (but didn’t hurt) myself a bit because I wanted to train with our guests.

I’m not crazy, it legit hurts. I’m not being a wuss, I’m being realistic. Okay.

Have I even told you guys I’m a relatively new stoner? Like, just since it got legalized in Canada, and like, in November? So a lot of those like random “crazy-ass” stoner stereotypical phrases that I used to make fun of and think were like “oh, hurr durr, only stupid stoners who can’t think straight think like that” - they’re TRUE!!!! holy fuck, guys.

Hm, also, I think I am definitely going to be able to ride along and let the shrooms take me where they will next weekend. I’m ready for it. I’m excited for it. I feel like there will be so many more breakthroughs.

OH! yes, returning.

So, those ladies and talking about not even feminism, but just out in the open, within earshot of people on the street (fair, they’re just having an open air convo on their own personal balcony - everyone else is on the public sidewalk, the acoustics in this area are just very conducive), talking about statistics about women.

It’s so awesome that I live ina place where that can happen.

That I live in a place where a trans woman and her lesbian girlfriend can walk through the park. Where an openly lesbian couple, an openly gay couple, two best dude friends (and or maybe another gay couple, it’s not like they were dressed in rainbows or held hands or anything), a single dad with two kids, a single stoner, and all sorts of straight couples can just all exist alongside each other without anyone feeling pressured or attacked or anything.

It’s awesome.

Ok. My shoulder is really hurting. I know I’m not being a wuss with this now.

Though I have to say, as much as this fucking sucks, I still wouldn’t trade it for my experience as a martial artist. Now I know for next year, and I can protect my younger students now since I know that wet boards are so harsh on even my body - it’d tear out the shoulder of some of our younger kids. And I can experiment with drying the boards a bit more so they’re more brittle and won’t bounce back.

I think if I had been doing a single break in a controlled setting like a dojo instead of needing to set up in as few steps as possible and break and move on quick so you don’t hold up the route, I could have broken it. But as it was, it’s not possible for me to courteously summon up the concentration for a break like that on a parade route.

I’m gonna just relax for a while. Probably find some anime to watch. I wanted to draw, but I don’t think my shoulder’s up for it. I’ll have to try to remember the imagery.

It’s like, space-sci-fi dystopia future-wave sort of thing but with lower tech and more slum-like. cartoony. cel shaded. primariy colours: orange-brown, blue/purple like vaporwave, red, orange-orange, maybe some yellow/yellow-white.

guys, weed is magical. I love weed. I mean, I’m a highly functioning member of society. I live a frugal lifestyle, but I kill it at work, I’m becoming highly involved in my community, etc.

it’s crazy how there’s that stoner stereotype, but honestly I’d say that’s just the entertaining minority. the minority we all like to smoke along with. XD

Open Campus at the Tokyo Institute of Technology

College guidance counselors generally tell students to have fun and enjoy their campus visits. But it has NOT been fun this summer … instead, it has been physically exhausting walking sprawling campuses with my daughter in this heatwave. Being Round Two for me (the last time I went … was with my son four summers ago – time flies!), the college visits are now a little easier to navigate. However, my daughter would like to explore campuses with fresh considerations, even though she will trying for admission to the same course as her brother (some sibling rivalry at work here).

Going during the tepid heat turned out to be a good idea, as it allowed us to judge the comfort levels within the buildings, green shields and whether air-conditioning was adequate.

Many Open Campuses allow eager students (and parents) access to many, if not all of the student facilities.

While it may not be possible for out-of-towners, we recommend that you not rush your visit. Allow enough time for unstructured time (outside the seitsumeikai information session and official tour) to walk the campus to get an overview of the general campus infrastructure, its size and character of its community.

Getting out there gives you a feel of the ambience and environment – is the university urban and cosmopolitan and located in the centre of the city (like Meiji University above)?

Or does it have a more green and secluded, rural feel, like Yokohama National University campus(see photos left), or perhaps a bit of both.

If the campus is secluded, what is campus security like? With a college-attending son at home, we know that students often work on their projects or models till the wee hours of the morning. They rush to school to hand in projects before the completion deadline, sometimes just before the midnight deadline, sometimes early morning. Safety for the student, especially for females is a paramount consideration.

A green lung and breathing spaces (like the lovely large pond at Shuto Daigaku) on the other hand, can be a lifeline for the stressed out student during exam time or be buffer to the crowds in a large college community.

Libraries

Libraries are often showpieces and selling points for private universities. Universities built during the Bubble Era like Shuto Daigaku’s (see photos to the left) tended to have more lavish facilities than those built post-war or after the economic downturn.

While it doesn’t matter that your university library should possess the architectural “wow” factor, you will be spending a fair amount of time there studying…and as libraries are apt to be overcrowded during exam time, these should at least be functional and there should be sufficient comfortable study spaces for the student population.

Check: Are there private study carrels for good concentration and deep study? Are there spaces for study or discussion groups like the one below? (Parents might wonder: Are students industriously studying in the libraries?)

Classrooms, labs and studios, project and research facilities

You will find it beneficial to sit in on at least one or two classes or lectures, especially if you are torn between discipline options. However, most students will enjoy getting off the official beaten tour-path more, wandering around and watching the student life in their natural habitat.

Ultimately, most would agree that your priority should be on the quality of the academic program, the teaching and the accessibility of the professors — afterall you(r parents) are paying hefty study tuition fees most likely with a view to your obtaining a real education with expected future returns, not with a view to your enjoyment of resort-standard gyms or pools.

In the end, the most eye-opening aspect of the campus visit, for us, was the visit to the faculty labs and studios. Of the two of the campuses we visited, Yokohama National University (see first six photos gallery below) gave us complete walk-in access to the labs and studios, including those of the graduate school’s, while Tokyo Institute of Technology (scroll down to last next six photos) gave us partial access.

Next, what about athletics, gym and sports facilities, you are thinking. Is the campus strongly focused on certain sports? Or does it have a balance of sports and academics? This is factor caters to highly personal preferences. One of my kids was attracted to the ski club, the other to tennis courts and archery. We were wowed by the magnificent swimming pool and gyms at Shuto Daigaku (Tokyo Metropolitan University), facilities that were built before the Economic Bubble burst. At Yokokoku (Yokohama National University), we saw students practising archery and heard karate shouts from the dojo.

Don’t just be a “tourist”, engage the campus in every way possible. Speak to staff and students on hand, ask about exchange or overseas study opportunities, career internships and opportunities. We saw a lot material pasted on walls as well as impressive faculty research or project publications on display for browsing.

Posters and bulletin boards on faculty corridors, walls in the cafeteria, student centers give a lot away. What is the student culture and campus climate? What student clubs or organizations have a strong presence on campus? Pick up a student newspaper to find out about upcoming events, guest speakers and what issues matter to the community on campus.

Not forgetting food cafeterias and restaurants and off campus recreation. On-campus convenience stores or supermarkets matter to students who love food, or who spend a great deal of their time or who live in dorms on campus. Of the four campuses we checked out, three were in close proximity to vibrant city life, while two of them were secluded and far from city centres. Study groups and activity clubs often cement friendships and networks for life, access to a hub of cafes, bowling alleys or other places where trendy young people gather, helps foster social life.

We eavesdropped on many of the conversations students were having. We particularly enjoyed eavesdropping on a guided tour of the university museum by a professor of Meiji University’s archaeological department.

Ride public transportation (bus and train) home to get the fullest possible picture. My daughter considered the location of the university, and the ease and feasibility of getting home from university at all hours. Architecture students work on projects intensively for days on end, and often end up staying overnight in their studios working ceaselessly to meet completion deadlines. Having learnt from her sibling, she figured that it was going to be too much of a hassle to be carrying large and fragile project models on the crowded bus for more than a half hour to the campus, on top of the hour-and-a-half train commute to the nearest campus station.

University brochures and pamphlets are free if you attend the Open Days, they are sometimes available at cost when requested on other occasions

Beyond merely perusing websites and brochures, college visits can often be deal breakers in the decision to apply to or attend a school. Make notes of your impressions of the place and course—it may help you with the college essays and interviews at a later date.

It may help save time and avoid confusion to find out before the visit find out what classes are available for prospective students to visit. College guidance directors and counselors will tell you: “Don’t judge a college until you have engaged the campus.” Speak to current students when possible to ask them what they like most about their school, or what they would to see changed. Where professors offer tours or talks in your area of interest, how impressed were you by the professors you met and the classes you attended? Attend classes, go to club meetings, eat in the dining hall as we did (350 yen for a bowl of ramen!), and sleep in the dorms, if possible.

The college visit, by the way, is often the key trigger that launches the student into the final sprint mode before the admissions exams … as he or she walks the hallowed hallways to his/her dream university. Happy Campus Open Day!
