The Pogues are gathered around the bonfire, chatting over a couple of beers and joints. JJ keeps checking his phone every few minutes, wondering why you haven't texted him yet. You agreed for him to pick you up at your house at eleven, but he wants to wait for your text saying you're home. He's considered just going over anyway, assuming you're already there since dinner would've ended at least two hours ago. Before he has the chance to even rise to his feet to go, you and Topper roll up the driveway. None of the Pogues recognize the gray BMW, except Sarah.
“Is that Topper dropping off Y/N?” She frowns in confusion as the car comes to a steady halt at the end of the gravel drive.
Pope presses his fingers to his temples, wide-eyed. “Am I hallucinating?”
“Okay, enough weed for me," Kiara declares, passing the joint to John B.
Topper stops the car and turns to you. “You’ll be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” you nod, collecting your bag between your legs.
“Call or text if you need me,” he instructs, still somewhat reluctant to drop you off.
“Will do,” you offer him a reassuring smile.
“Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow," he complies, leaning over the divider and planting a quick peck to your cheek. “Love you.”
“Love you too,” you return, granting him a kiss on the cheek as well. You climb out of Topper's car, walking toward the fire pit where JJ and everyone watch you utterly dumbfounded. “Hi guys,” you greet, slinging your bag over your shoulder.
“Topper knows his way around The Cut?” John B pokes fun.
“Did he drop you off to scope out the place?” Kiara grumbles.
“He didn’t want me driving," you explain as you take a seat next to a silent JJ. "We went to Kelce’s for a little after dinner and I’ve been drinking."
“What a gentleman,” Sarah mumbles sarcastically.
“Hi Baby,” JJ greets you with a soft smile, wrapping his arm around your waist.
“Hi,” you grin, leaning in and planting a kiss to his lips to which he reciprocates.
“I could’ve picked you up,” he whispers against your lips.
“I know," you state, parting from him for a second. "I just didn’t want to make you do the drive."
“I’m surprised Topper let you out of the car,” Sarah snickers.
“We came to an understanding,” you describe vaguely.
“Oh yeah?" Kiara raises a brow. "What’s that?”
“We’re just friends,” you reply confidently.
“I don’t just kiss my friends goodbye...” John B mumbles under his breath.
“We’re just friends," you reiterate, starring the boy down warningly.
“You bet you are,” JJ agrees, pulling you into his side. “I missed you today.”
“I missed you too," you blush, peering over to meet his gaze.
“Movie anyone?” John B suggests suddenly rising to his feet.
“Yes!” Sarah bursts.
“Comedy!” Pope votes.
“Romance!” Kiara challenges.
“Actually," JJ sighs, standing up next to you. "I was going to head to bed, wanna come?” He asks as he glances down at you.
You hum. “Yeah, I’m pretty tired actually."

You and JJ lay in bed, facing each other as you talk about everything under the sun. You could've watched the movie considering you've been up for hours talking, not once trying to fall asleep. Yet, spending hours laying in bed, talking to JJ, is a much better pass time.
“Fish tacos from The Wreck,” JJ answers without a moment's hesitation.
“Ooo, you know I’ve never been there,” you confess, intrigued.
“Really?!" JJ's eyes grow wide. "We’ll have to go ASAP! Kie’s dad makes the best hush puppies,” he dramatically gestures with his hands.
You giggle, “sounds amazing.”
“Okay, now your turn." JJ's arm drapes over you and rubs his hand up and down your back.
“Hmm," you hum, thinking it over. "My grandma’s chicken and dumplings. She always made it when I was sick and it’s like a warm hug.”
“Yum," he grins. “Dream vacation?”
“Anywhere with a beach,” you answer easily. “I love to travel, but I also love the ocean so can’t be too far from it. You?”
“Surfing trip around the world," he nods, clearly having thought about it before. "I’m talking Australia, Japan, Brazil, all over.”
“Surfing world tour. Very surfer Pogue of you,” you tease playfully.
“Would a Kook Princess like to come?” He offers with a sly smirk as his eyes fall to the small space between you.
“Sure I’ll follow,” you accept with a soft smile.
JJ jokingly nudges you on the shoulder with a slight blush to his cheeks. “Stop," he chuckles. "If anything you pick the places and I follow. Follow you around the world.”
“You would?” You narrow your eyes at him with a smirk.
“What’s that Carol King song?” He tries to recall and whispers some of the words. “Where you lead...”
“I will follow," you add in a sing-songy tone.
“Anywhere!” You both say in unison to each other, causing you two to laugh.
JJ exhales deeply, catching his breath after laughing.“Talking to you is so easy it’s scary," he confesses, taking your hand in his between you two.
“I never felt so understood until I met you,” you tell him.
His brows scrunch together as he watches your hands move around one another. “You don’t think Topper understands you?”
“I do... to an extent,” you shrug, not fully convinced. “He’s known me longer, so he knows why I am the way I am, but he’s not necessarily accepting of all of it.”
“What do you mean?” JJ wonders aloud.
“If I told him that I don’t want to go to every party and rather stay in, he’d wonder why. If I said I don’t like the Club and rather spend a day on some remote island somewhere he wouldn’t relate. I could tell you that I want to move to Guam and you’d be game for it. Some days I don’t want to have any responsibilities or social obligations which confuses Topper. He’s satisfied where he is. He’s satisfied being stationary and though I’m told I have everything, I don’t want any of it." You pause, finding yourself coming to a hard conclusion. You peer up at JJ who's eyes have left your hands and pour into you. "There has to be more right? There has to be something different out there.”
“Life beyond the OBX?" He seek to clarify to which you nod. "Yeah, there’s an entire world outside of here!”
“That’s what I want..." You whisper. "Something entirely my own and somewhere where no one knows me.”
“Maybe we should explore it together,” he smiles gently with content. “I mean, as long as it’s okay for one person to know you.”
“You don’t count," you blush.
JJ releases your hand, bringing his own to caress your cheek. “I want to see the world with you."
You lean into his touch, his warmth making you feel safe, seen, and understood. “I think that can be arranged...”
JJ shakes his head, as though he's come to a profound realization. “You’re everything to me." His words slip by in a whisper as he leans in and presses a gentle kiss to your lips, sealing his statement.
You run your fingers through JJ's hair, pulling him in deeper. He smiles against your lips, loving your reaction. He moves to hover over you, encompassing you with his body. You take matters into your own hands and press JJ down to lay down beside you. Swiftly, you move to straddle him. A grunt leaves him and you cower slightly.
"Did I hurt you?!" You nearly panic.
“No, no,” he’s quick to assure you, bringing his hand to your face and brushing your hair back.
You hadn’t noticed when he got into bed, the bruises and cuts scattered across his torso. You remember them from the Boneyard and in the hot tub. You had thought perhaps they were from Topper.
JJ can tell that your mind isn’t satisfied. "What else is troubling you?" He frowns. "Babe, look at me, please."
"If these weren't Topper, what happened?"
"I don't want to talk about it,” he scrunches his face with a shake of the head. “Don't worry, it's taken care of,” he tries to change the subject, reaching up to kiss you.
You gasp. "Did someone do this to you?!" You quickly realize.
"Y/N..."JJ exhales deeply.
"JJ, I have to know!” You argue. “If someone-"
"It was my dad okay!" He confesses.
You heart sinks has the dark reality hits you like a ton of bricks.
"He... he gets mad sometimes..."JJ describes, looking anywhere but you. He begins to fidget with the hem of your shirt. When... When things weren’t good between us... I picked a fight with him. It was stupid. I shouldn't have done it, but I did! I think I wanted it. At least then I could control the pain,” he explains, killing you.
You lean down and plant a gentle, comforting kiss to his lips. When you pull back, JJ stares at you, stunned by the action. You swallow hard as you slide down, keeping eye contact with him as you plant a kiss to his bruised peck. JJ’s heart begins to race as he watches you. You continue on your path to his multicolored rib. JJ’s hand brushes over the top of your head gently. Your fingers curl under the hem of his boxers as you leave a trail of kisses over his cut and bruised stomach.
"Y/N..." He breathes heavily as his eyes fall shut.
"Never again,” you tell him warningly as a demand. “You never go back there. Here, Kie's, Pope's, my place, anywhere else but there. Morning, noon, or night, you need a place, come to me. You hear me?"
JJ nods, too consumed in you to voice anything.
"I see marks like these on you again, I'll kill him and they won't find the body. I've seen enough crime documentaries. I can be like Liam Nison in Taken,” you joke slightly.
"I'm sure you could," JJ smirks, peering down at you.
You lift yourself up to hover just above his face. You cup his cheeks, making him look you in the eyes. "I'm never going to leave you, ever! You never have to suffer alone again. I promise. Your pain is my pain. Whatever you inflict on yourself you also do on me."
"I promise too. You're my world, Y/N,” he tells you and you know he means it. “You're my life now."
Suddenly, there's a ruckus coming from outside in the hall. The sound of the screen door slamming against the frame and shouting.
“Hey! Hey! Hey! I’ll go get her! You stay here!” You hear John B yell.
“Like I’d listen to you!” Another voice barks.
You break from JJ, trying to listen. “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know,” he frowns, peering over at the door. He climbs off of you and slips out of the bed. He grabs a t-shirt from the chair in the corner and pulls it over his head, his boxers still slightly exposed.
“JJ, be careful!” You beg, worried that it could be someone looking for trouble.
"I will, Baby. It's okay," he promises, heading toward the door to check it out.
“Cool off Topper!” Pope shouts before you hear a bang.
“Topper?” You mumble in disbelief, flying off the bed and toward the door.
“Y/N!" JJ grabs your wrist as you open the door. "Baby, wait!”
Before he has the chance to stop you, you stumble into the hallway. JJ rushes out of the bedroom, nearly running into you. Standing at the end of it, in the archway of the living room, Topper turns his attention away from the Pogues. His eyes land on you and a wave of relief consumes him.
“Y/N...” Your name falls from his parted lips faintly.
“Topper...” You stand frozen.
“There is almost an equal Kook to Pogue ratio in this house and I don’t like it,” Pope huffs from behind Topper.
“I need to talk to you," the tall blonde announces urgently.
You speed walk down the hall, despite JJ's efforts to stop you. “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, I just... I... uh...” Topper stutters, nervously avoiding your gaze, and focuses on the small floor space between you.
“Have you been drinking again?" You question, coming to the conclusion he has. He smells of beer and weed, more than he did hours ago. "Did you go back to Kelce’s!”
“I was losing my mind, Y/N!" He bursts, uncharacteristically, causing you to jump and JJ to step forward toward you. "I needed a distraction, but nothing was working!” Topper explains in a rush, all fidgety. “Can we just go somewhere to talk?”
JJ immediately steps in, moving to stand between the two of you. “You’re not going anywhere with her!”
“Oh shove it,” Topper snaps at JJ.
“You forget you’re on my side of the island, Kook!” JJ barks, shoving Topper in the chest.
“Enough!” You scream, pressing a palm to each of their chests. “For Pete’s sake!”
“Back off JJ!” Kiara yells.
“I just need to talk to you,” Topper pants.
You exhale deeply, glancing between JJ and Topper. You know JJ won't approve and won't allow it without a fight, but you agree to speak with Topper. “Okay, let’s go outside.”
JJ laughs, pacing around. “You can’t be serious-”
“Ten minutes!” You shout at him, escorting Topper toward the door.
“She sure told you,” Topper mocks JJ as he backs up to the exit.
“Oh shut up,” you grumble, urging Topper through the doorway leading to the front yard.
You and Topper settle down on the hammock, swinging back and forth on the edge, side by side. The sun has long since set and the lights in the large tree illuminate the yard. Unable to sit still, Topper rises from his spot and paces in front of you.
“What’s going on Topper?” You ask worriedly.
The boy stops, rubbing his hand across the back of his neck nervously. “I’m losing my mind, Y/N!" He finally breaks his silence. "I feel like there are weights strapped to me and I’m being pulled to the bottom of the ocean, struggling for air!” He rushes out in a pant. “I’ve been an arrogant ass and too scared to pay attention, but now I’m just scared and I’m afraid if I don’t tell you this now that I’ll never get a chance like this again!”
You stand, taking his hands in yours. "Just take a deep breath!"
He yanks his hands free of your hold, running his fingers through his hair as he paces away. "I'm about to be the most selfish person on the planet!"
“Topper, just say it! It can't be that bad!" You try to reassure him, the pit in your stomach growing with each passing minute. You can only assume the worst.
“I love you!” Topper bursts out, meeting your gaze pleadingly.
A weight lifts off your shoulder. You thought it was something bad. “That's it? I love you too,” you laugh lightly.
“No!" He stops you. "Not the way you mean it... it’s not the same! I love you!”
Neither of you notice the Pogues hiding in the enclosed patio, watching everything go down.
“I knew it!” Pope announces from his spot by the window.
“Pay up!” Kiara holds out her hand to John B.
JJ's heart sinks when he hears the confession leave Topper. He wants to run for the hills, but he can't help but observe you stand there in shock.
Topper's chest rises and falls rapidly. “I didn’t realize it fully until I dropped you off and saw you with him. I know what I said earlier, that I’m okay with this!" The words fly out of him like a freight train going full speed. “But I’m not! I’ve been in love with you for two years! Before Sarah, during Sarah, after her!”
“Okay ouch...” Sarah mumbles from her spot on the patio.
“I’ve loved you since the moment I met you, I’ve just been too caught up in everything else to notice!" Topper's voice cracks with emotion.
"You tell me this now!" You shout, growing more frustrated with each passing second.
He sighs, "I know, I know, I'm sorry-"
"No! You don't get to apologize!" You snap at him, utterly pissed off and frankly hurt. "You could've had me! You had me, Topper!" You correct as your eyes begin to swell with tears. "You had every opportunity to change the status quo and you didn't! You let me feel like a toy, there to satisfy you when you needed company! Yes, it was fun! Yes, it was great sex! Yes, I fed into the holding and touching, even when you and Sarah were on a break because I thought..." You swallow hard, processing what you're about to say. "Because I thought that eventually, you'd love me!" You break, tears falling down your cheeks. You finally let go of a truth you've been holding in for years now. "If I kept sleeping with you that one day you'd realize that we were more than just friends! Everyone else thought it! But you were caught up on Sarah and then it became not letting Sarah be with John B! I had to break it off after Bermuda because it was killing me! I couldn't take it anymore! I had to begin to move on!"
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, I'm such an idiot!" Topper rushes up to you, taking your hands in his pleadingly. "Tonight, feeling you again, I saw the rest of our lives and I want it! I don’t give a shit about our friends or golfing or the Club or Sarah because none of it matters if I don’t get to experience it with you!” He begs, “so pick me! Be with me! Love me!”
You whimper, unsure of what to do or say. Everything is happening so fast.
"You slept with him?"
You turn over your shoulder to find JJ standing just a few feet away. His eyes glisten under the lights of the tree. He swallows hard, taking your silence as enough of an answer. He nods his head, pressing his lips together to hold back his emotions.
“You’re exactly as everyone says!” He yells, pointing at you aggressively.
In a second, he's sprinting away down the gravel drive. You step forward, ready to run after him, but Topper grabs your wrist.
"Y/N, don't!" He pleads.
You yank your wrist free, before running him. "JJ!" You call, "JJ wait!"
"Y/N!" Topper shouts, running after you.
"JJ!" You beg for him to stop.
"Y/N, wait!" Topper grunts, sprinting.
"JJ!" You struggle to keep up with the boy. Soon, he disappears into the dark woods across the street and you have no choice but to halt, losing all hope.
You fall to your knees on the gravel. The sound of Topper's feet hitting the gravel quickly approaching. You slam your fists to the ground with a scream, hitting your boiling point. How much is a girl expected to take?

Word count: 2,539
“Remember that time I made you laugh?”
The air in the room feels thick and heavy as Luke lifts his head, his narrow eyes on you as you avoid his gaze. Your lounge, a place that was once filled with life and laughter, almost feels unrecognisable. His voice is gravelly, almost a whisper as he speaks, like the light inside of him no longer shines so bright. Your focus is on the ground, your mind silently counting the number of panels across the floor. Anything to distract from the current moment. You don’t want to face Luke.
Things have changed.
The house that you once called home feels like an empty shell of what once was there, and all that’s left is you and Luke to pick up the pieces of each other.
“I would give in to hear that sound again.” He continues. There’s no emotion in his voice, like he has nothing left. There’s so much to say, yet so little - he doesn’t know where to start. Luke can’t bear to think back over the good times through fear of breaking down. It feels like it’s about to come to a head, like he can no longer keep it inside. There’s things that need to be said.
You were once ‘that couple,’ the one that your friends always knew you’d become; a love so pure that others wanted to feel it. They’d ask you how you do it, but neither you or Luke ever had an answer. It was just easy. It worked. The love you felt for each other overcame everything else, and that’s all there was to it.
“I don’t know what you want me to say, Luke.” You admit, still avoiding his eyes.
You can feel him looking at you. He’s anxiously bouncing his knee, the sight catches your eye, and it’s not an uncommon one. He over thinks a lot. You don’t need to look at him to know how he’s feeling; the cogs are whirring in his head far too quick for even him to understand.
Luke tries to contain his temper. There’s a lot that he wants you to say, a lot of explanations he feels he deserves. He doesn’t have it in him to get mad at you. It hurts too much. A promise he once made, that nothing is solved by shouting, not after you disclosed your painful childhood to him. As hurt as he is, he isn’t going to break that. There’s only one time he raised his voice at you, and he’ll never forget the pain in your eyes when you recoiled from him. It’s enough to haunt him into never speaking loudly to anyone again.
He clears his throat.
“Things have changed,” He says, blankly, so matter-of-factly. “We’ve changed. I want you to admit that you feel it too.”
The two of you have been living in denial for too long.
Luke has woken up alone too many times. You’d slip out of bed early, blaming a morning appointment, but wouldn’t return until late afternoon. He can’t remember the last time he held you without you pushing away. There’s always a reason to not be around, always an excuse. He’d spent the whole tour wanting to be back in your arms, to feel his lips against yours. He’s been back for a month, and he still doesn’t feel like he’s home.
“You were away for a long time, Luke,” You murmur, knowing that it’s going to hit a nerve with him. Tour was always a sensitive topic. You know he won’t get mad at you, though, he never does. It’s one of the things you love about him. “Six months. I got used to being alone. I can’t just go back to normal so quickly.
He pauses for a moment.
“Did you miss me?” He asks, like he’s nervous to hear the answer.
He doesn’t get a moment to prepare for your response before you reply, “of course I did, Luke. Why would you ask me that?”
Your mind flashes back to when he was away, the late night calls when he needed to hear your voice. He couldn’t sleep without saying good night, despite what time it was where you were. Sometimes you didn’t pick up. Although, what Luke didn’t know, was that you needed to hear him just as much. It just hurt too much sometimes, to know it would be so long before you heard him in person again.
“We’ve been through tours before,” He reminds you. “It’s never taken this long for us to adjust. You’re usually so excited for me to come home. It didn’t feel like that this time.”
When he’s been touring before, the thought of getting home to you was what kept him going. Whether you managed to make it to the airport or he met you at home, the smile on your lips accompanied with the relief of a “you’re home,” made his heart soar. He’d never felt so loved, so at home — nothing beat the feeling of waking up next to you the morning after getting home. The best sleep he ever had was the night he came home from being away for so long.
It’s a feeling he misses.
He’s been home for a month, and nothing feels the same. There’s been moments where he feels as though he’s been dreaming, whether he’s misremembering your relationship before he went on tour.
He doesn’t understand how things can change so quickly.
From falling asleep with you in his arms, to feeling like you’re miles apart in the bed. Even if you somehow untangled your legs from his own in your sleep, he would search for you, craving your skin to soothe his mind back to sleep. Now, he’s on edge, he lays in the dark staring at the wall until sleep manages to encompass him. He’s lucky if he sleeps through the night.
There’s times where you sleep in the spare room, claiming you finished work too late, and didn’t want to disturb him. When really, it’s too much to be in the same bed as him, knowing that he’s hurting. You know you’re pushing him away, yet don’t know how to stop it.
You just wanted to be able to breathe.
“I just...” You sigh, brushing a hand through your hair as you slump back into the sofa. “I don’t know what to tell you. What do you want me to do?”
Luke wants to scream. He wants to tell you that he loves you, that he wants you to love him too. He knows you used to. He’s not sure you do anymore. He can’t remember the last time you told him sincerely. He still remembers the first time he told you he loved you, how even though it took you a minute to say it back, he knew you meant it. He saw it in your eyes. Now he says “I love you” and you reply “you too” — it doesn’t feel the same. Just like everything else doesn’t.
It’s the little things he misses the most. He misses talking to you, feeling connected, and just doing nothing together. He likes the reassurance of having someone around. He’s never been one to enjoy his own company, especially not after a tour, even if all you do is sit on your phones in silence. You used to put out his coffee cup in the morning, and he remembers when you stopped. He misses you singing quietly in the shower, when you think he can’t hear you. He can. And it makes his mornings that little bit brighter. He misses the sound of your laugh when you watch a repeat of a sitcom you’ve seen a hundred times.
It’s the little things that make him feel loved.
“I want you to love me like you say you do,” Luke says, as firmly as he can without his voice breaking. “I don’t want to have to remind you to love me. I shouldn’t have to do that.”
He thinks it’s unfair for you to blame him.
Tears well in your eyes at his words, the pain in his voice like a dagger through your heart as you listen to him speak. “You know that I love you, Luke.”
“No I don’t.” He replies. He’s just being honest. “You used to. I don’t know if-”
“I do.” You cut him off, not wanting to hear the end of the sentence. It makes sense that he doesn’t feel it anymore, as much as you don’t want to admit it. You’ve pushed him away. “You know the moment I fell in love with you. I didn’t lie when I said I’ve never loved someone like I love you. That doesn’t just go away.”
He does know the moment you’re talking about. It was one of the first times he took you home to Australia, to meet his family, when you saw just how loving and gentle he is. The way he loves his family is like nothing you’ve ever seen. He has the biggest heart. He glowed different that weekend; his Mum saw it too, she told you.
Everything felt like it had fallen into place.
You were in his childhood bedroom, just having a moment to yourselves, when he had kissed you like nothing else mattered, in that moment. You felt immersed by him, like you were meant to be there with him. Where you had murmured the words “You’re a real sweetheart, you know that? I’ve never felt love like this before.” and he swore he’d never love anybody else either.
Those days feel like a distant memory now.
“I got too used to you not being here.” You continue to explain. Six months is a long time. You threw yourself into work, into anything but thinking about how much you missed him. Maybe too much, because now you’ve forgotten how things once were. “I’m not blaming this on you, Luke. I know that touring means the world to you. I just had to stop myself from sitting around and waiting for you to come home.”
It’s not the first relationship Luke’s damaged by being away. It’s a common theme in his life, actually, but he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place. The band comes first. Yet he’s not sure he can do this again.
“I feel like I’ve lost you.” He admits, and now it’s his turn to tear up. There’s a lump in his throat, you can hear it in his voice. “I wanted to have this conversation for weeks now. I didn’t know if I was just making it up, that things felt so different, but they do. And I don’t know how to fix it.”
You dare to look in his direction. You find his eyes, the usual sparkling blue now dulled by the pain behind them, and it’s then you remember why you were looking away.
“I think we need to find each other again,” You admit, quietly. Easier said than done. You suddenly feel the desire to get up and sit next to him, to be close to him. It’s like he knows, like he can read your mind, and he shuffles up on the sofa to make space. You sigh heavily, your body feeling like dead weight as your feet carry you across the room. You’re almost nervous to sit next to him. “I don’t know how we do that. But we need to try.”
We. Something Luke feels like you haven’t been for a while.
“I need more.” Luke tells you. He needs more love, more affection, more conversation… more everything. He wants to feel like he’s in a relationship again. He wants to feel the love you say you have for him. He wants to feel like he’s enough for you. “I can’t go on like this. You’re worth the pain if you want to try and make this work. I just want to feel like we mean something to each other again.”
You feel like you’re lost in a crowd somewhere, or floating in the ocean, drifting further apart. Except maybe now is the time that you find each other again.
“Look at me, Luke.” You murmur, moving even closer, your hand resting on his shaking thigh to calm him down. You hear him inhale, exhale, and his eyes finally meet yours. Your voice is merely a whisper as you talk to him. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I love you so much that sometimes it hurts.”
Luke feels like he could break down on the spot when he finally looks you in the eye. It takes him back to every moment where he’s felt consumed by you, and for just a moment, he thinks that somehow, things might end up okay.
“I need to know that you’re in this for the long run.” He tells you, his eyes pleading with you more than his words are. “I’m always going to go on tour. I don’t want to go through this every time I come home. I can’t do this again.”
You nod, and your hand runs up and down his thigh in a soothing gesture.
“I’m right here,” You reassure him, your hand cupping his cheek as your thumb rubs over his cheekbones. For the first time in weeks, he feels like he can breathe, he feels safer than he thought he could in his house. “I know I haven’t been. And I know I have a lot of making up to do. But I’m going to be around to get us through this.”
Those are the words he’s longed to hear for weeks. You sit in silence for a few moments, just absorbing the conversation - just being in each other’s presence.
“That’s enough talking for now.” Luke whispers. He lays back against the cushions of the sofa, holding his arm out for you to lay against him. You oblige, sighing as you lay against his chest, the material of his jumper soft against your cheek. It’s like everything has stopped, like everything feels right once again. It feels like he hasn’t done this for months. Silently, he takes one hand to tilt your chin so your face is right in front of his. There’s pain in your eyes too, he can see it. His nose gently taps yours, and you move your face closer, before he’s brushing his lips against yours.
And then he’s kissing you.
It’s a real kiss, one that has meaning, feelings, more than anything he’s felt in weeks. The only affection he’d had for weeks was a passing kiss in the morning, sometimes before bed, but it didn’t feel like this. Your lips are soft yet slightly chapped; he tries to savour every detail. He just wants to feel close to you. His kisses taper off and he’s sighing contently, unsure where you’re going to go next, but feeling safer than he has for a while.
“Maybe we just had to break to be fixed.”
Things are far from perfect. Weeks of pain cannot be solved by one kiss. Yet you’re going to try, and that’s all Luke needs to know. You just need to find each other again.

Sequins, songs, kids... dance! This is what saved SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR’s sanity during lockdown
‘I think I’m doing this for me.’ But for now, we need to head back to her house, where Sonny has appeared, and Mickey is delighted to see his mum. Plates are waiting to be spun, and as I let myself out, Jesse is putting on a show in the kitchen, with Sophie as the audience, sitting under the disco ball. ....and her wonderfully joyous discos filmed in the family kitchen helped lift the nation’s spirits too. She tells Hattie Crisell why Friday nights round at hers became so precious
ORIGINAL ARTICLE: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-8549299/Sequins-songs-kids-dance-saved-SOPHIE-ELLIS-BEXTORs-sanity-lockdown.html
Tumblr media
Sophie Ellis-Bextor opens the door to me with a toddler in her arms – smiley 18-month-old Mickey – and her four-year-old son Jesse behind her, his hair a deep shade of copper. ‘You have the most beautiful hair I’ve ever seen,’ I tell him, genuinely quite dazzled, and he replies bashfully, ‘Well, I’ve just had it cut.’
Welcome to Sophie’s world: a large and glittering house in West London, packed to the rafters with kitsch, toys, cats and boys. I don’t know how many cats are around, but the boys number five: Mickey, Jesse, eight-year-old Ray, 11-year-old Kit and 16-year-old Sonny. Managing the lot are the singer, her husband Richard Jones (bass guitar player with The Feeling and the supergroup Loup GarouX), and a nanny, who joins them Monday to Friday during the working day. ‘I used to have a nanny who was with us all the time, and to be honest I felt like it was too much,’ says Sophie. ‘It’s fine if it’s my thing that I think about 24 hours a day, but I think it’s healthy for other people to have their own life away from it all. It’s five kids – it’s a lot.’
Tumblr media
It certainly is, and it’s hard to imagine how demanding it must have been during lockdown, when the only one missing was the nanny. The public got a glimpse of this when Sophie performed a weekly series of ‘kitchen discos’, broadcasting them live via Instagram, her husband filming on his phone. They launched these shows during the bleakest part of the pandemic, and the good will that emanated from them was enormously cheering. She would appear in a sequined jumpsuit or rainbow-striped dress, a pair of platforms at the end of her mile-long legs, and would serenade the camera while children wandered casually in and out of view. Sometimes her teenage son would jump in to rescue the baby from a trailing wire, or one of the boys would need a cuddle, and their mother would pull them in close, keeping her other hand on the mic.
It was charming chaos. The music encompassed hits from Sophie’s back catalogue such as ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ and ‘Take Me Home’ – or ‘Stay at Home’, as she rechristened it – but also crowd-pleasing covers and theatrical numbers from shows such as Grease. For the audience, it offered uplifting relief from the frightening reality of the time: climbing death rates and isolation. It was comfort music, I say. ‘Exactly,’ she agrees. ‘And disco’s always had that for me anyway. It’s so euphoric and joyful, and it’s complex. In disco you can have the most painful, heartbreaking scenarios, but they’re in among something that makes you want to put your hands in the air and sing along. I think music can allow you the space to feel joy and anxiety at once.’
I am delighted to find that one end of their large kitchen still looks very much as it did, with the disco ball and a half-deflated helium balloon in place over the sofa. She confirms that it’s more or less always like this, perhaps minus the tinsel curtain. Colour and fun are everywhere in the house, from the framed retro artworks filling every wall, to the pinball machine in pride of place. At the other end of the kitchen, a diner-style menu-board for the kids bears the words, ‘Be polite or no service.’
Leaving the children with the nanny, Sophie and I head out to chat on a bench in the park. She’s wearing an embroidered navy dress and a red fluffy cardigan, with red lipstick that has mostly worn off; at 41, she’s truly beautiful, with very pale green eyes. Despite what we’ve seen from her on Instagram, it hasn’t been an easy time. For one thing, there was the fall from her bike in June that left her in hospital with a gory head wound. When I mention it, though, she brushes it off with, ‘I cannot dine out on that any more.’ Then she adds, ‘I mean, I don’t recommend cycling off a towpath – it did hurt.’
Tumblr media
‘I knew that this was something that was happening in millions of households. I do worry about all my parents – I say “all” because I’ve got step-parents as well – but I think really it was focused on John, because he’s so vulnerable. It’s such a weird, torturous thing isn’t it for human beings, if you say that hanging out with someone you love is the one thing that might actually endanger them? How can you wrap your head around that?’
She hasn’t been thrilled with the government messaging around the virus. ‘“Stay at home” is clear and concise and all ages get it. “Stay alert”? I hardly ever feel alert. I don’t feel alert now.
And we’ve all shown we’re good at following guidelines that make sense, but you can’t keep bending it for people. Look at the effect when the rules were made flexible.’ She seems to be referring obliquely to the Dominic Cummings/Barnard Castle debacle. ‘We all thought, “Oh well, if we could have been going off and having day trips all this time, why was I staying at home and not seeing my mum, who lives ten minutes away?” I found that really tough.’
The kitchen discos were as much for her and the family as they were for the audience. ‘It was Richard’s idea. One day we were making plans and doing stuff, and the next day it was like, boomph, everything shut down. Suddenly we were just home all the time, all work cancelled, all the festivals… I was supposed to be going to Australia, New Zealand, I had gigs all round Europe. And Richard was, like, “Well, why don’t we do a gig here, and it gives us something to do and a bit of fun?” I think we missed everybody.’
Performing during that time, even via Instagram, gave her a huge sense of connection, she says. ‘I honestly don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t had that, and I don’t know how it would have been for our family, because it became really precious.’ She’s now planning a Kitchen Disco Tour next May (there will also be an album, out this October), and hopes it will offer audiences a cathartic experience. ‘I want to provide a place where people can get lost in the moment. I want them to walk out of there and go, “Oh my goodness, I didn’t know how much I needed that.”’
Tumblr media
It was no surprise to her boys to see her dressed up and performing; Mickey sleeps in the room where she keeps her fantastic stage wardrobe, and they’ve all been with her to festivals, gigs and recording studios. It was clear from their low-key presence in the kitchen discos (she left it up to them whether they wanted to be there or not) that they’re not fazed by it. ‘The older I’ve got, the more the me at home and the me on stage is the same person anyway,’ she says. Her first solo album came out almost 20 years ago; this one will be her eighth.
She’s also just celebrated her 15th wedding anniversary with Richard. Theirs was a whirlwind romance that stuck: ‘I found out I was having a baby after only about six weeks,’ she says with a smile. ‘We’d known each other for a while – he’d been in my band – but we’d literally just started dating and I hadn’t even really told anybody.’ Sonny was born two months prematurely, thus arriving only eight months after they’d got together.
And they’ve now got him almost to adulthood, I say. ‘Yeah, and he’s lovely; he’s his own person. You know, parenthood is so much more reactive than I ever thought,’ she says. ‘I thought it was all about what you put in. It’s not. I realised it the day I had him: I looked at this tiny baby and I thought, “Oh my goodness, you’re Sonny, and now I’ve got to help you show me who you are and what you need from me.”’
To raise five children while continually working is no mean feat, and she mentions that there were tense moments during lockdown. But she and Richard clearly make a good team. ‘I guess the thing that’s often not celebrated as much in long-term relationships – and I think this goes for family members, friends, all sorts of relationships where there’s love – is that we actually really like each other,’ she says. ‘I really like who Richard is, and I respect him and I like spending time with him.’
Tumblr media
She took an extended break after Sonny came along, following a difficult birth. ‘But to be honest, the more babies I’ve had and the older I’ve got, the more confident I’ve become about what I can do around being pregnant and having kids,’ she says. ‘I’ve been better with the last couple at just keeping going with the work either side of it. I have a job where I can basically call the shots a bit. I’m very lucky with that and I totally exploit it. Also I like it if I do a big gig and I’m six months pregnant – I feel quite clever,’ she laughs.
The challenges of this complicated life have inspired Sophie’s new project – the podcast Spinning Plates, on which she chats to other working mums, including Caitlin Moran, Fearne Cotton, the mummy blogger Candice Brathwaite, and her own mother Janet. ‘I’ve got such a brilliant array of women, and honestly it feels like a privilege to sit there for an hour and ask them loads of nosy stuff,’ she says. ‘Obviously the springboard is the idea of the working mother, but actually what really unites us is we’re all women, and there are so many things about being a modern woman… It’s a rich pot of stuff to go through, really.’
She loved having the chance to interview her mum. ‘In my head she’s always been this real trailblazer and very confident. She never seemed to have any guilt with any of her work, and I’m glad, because it gave me a good role model of “It’s OK for me to be selfish enough to have my work and keep it separate if I want to, and do the things I want to do.” I don’t think I would have been confident enough if I hadn’t had a mum like that; I’ve struggled a bit to give myself permission sometimes even with that.’
Another chat, with Yvonne Telford, founder of the fashion brand Kemi Telford, made her realise that at times she’s too self-critical. ‘She said she hates it when she hears women say, “Oh, I’m such an idiot,” and I was, like, “God, I do that all the time.” Even with the podcast, when I first started writing to people I wanted as guests, I’d say, “Don’t worry, I know how it goes – you’re probably too busy to reply.” Then I was, like, what am I doing? I’m saying to them, “Ignore me!”’ She bursts out laughing. It sounds as though making the podcast might be rather empowering. ‘Yes,’ she agrees.

The Louvre and Eiffel Tower
28/04/2018: An early rise today for at least one person while the rest took it easy. The purpose was to take a walk through Jardin des Tuileries while the crowds weren't around. It was well worth the effort to be able to move around with plenty of room. After the walk, it was briefly back to the room and out again along Rue Saint-Honoré for croissants and pastries. Returning for breakfast we were then all on the move to Paris City Vision, also known as Get Your Guide to collect the Skip the Line tickets to the Louvre.
Tumblr media
Allée Centrale,  Jardin des Tuileries
We were in the queue at around nine fifteen, waiting to go through the Pyramid entrance security and down to Napoléon Hall, directly beneath the large glass pyramid. Today Shane made the choice of sticking with the girls and Tom and Beau heading off on a brother adventure. This was a wise move as the girls were always left behind as Cecilia wasn’t use to keeping up with the pace set by Shane and therefore the girls walked slower than the boys and were always left far behind.  Sadly, we were to discover the reason for Cecilia’s struggle to keep up a few months after returning to Australia. Anyway, this separation between the men and women folk were making the girls feel like it was an “us and them” holiday when out exploring. So good boy Shane for keeping with the women today. We immediately grabbed a few maps and headed to the Sully Wing, via the ticket box and more security, where the some of the original fortress still stands. Last time it was closed for a reno. Also, the last time we were here, we were guided by Violetta, a masters student in French art and since that was what she was familiar with, that’s what we looked at. By the time we were finished the tour and were able to wander around at will, we were knackered. This time we were on a mission to see whatever else was around, but in particular, the Egyptian stuff.
Tumblr media
The Foyer under the Glass Pyramid. Leading to all wings
First impressions were great. As we entered the basement of the Sully Wing, we were drawn to the start of the Pavillon de d'Horloge devoted to the history of the museum and its collections including the original fortress of which plenty still remains today.
Tumblr media
Relationship of the original fortress within the Louvre
The path led around the base of what remained of the fortress and included a walkway so that we could walk within the original moat.
Prior to his departure on crusade in 1190, Philip II (King Philippe Auguste), son of Louis VII, erected a fortified enclosure to protect Paris against the threat of invaders while he was away. Ordering the construction of a great wall around the city, he reinforced it at the junction with the Seine by building a defensive fortress. Square in plan with corner towers and an imposing central keep. The Seine fed a moat that encompassed the entire structure with another moat surrounding the keep. Two gates, flanked by towers, were built within the wall, one facing south towards the Seine and the other facing east, leading to the city. As Paris spread west, the castle lost its defensive effectiveness and was later transformed into a luxurious royal residence by King Charles V.
Tumblr media
The outer wall of the fortress (and probably the outer moat)
Tumblr media
The inner moat and the keep
The path skirted the outer moat and to the far side of the ruins, past the Crypt of the Sphinx and to a long staircase that climbed to the floor above. Halfway up we had a choice, left or right. We chose the right and ended up in the Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities Rooms, which were shared by the Sully and Denon Wings and were welcomed by Athena, a three metre high antique replica of the original bronze from around 430BC.

Hello! (La Pallas de Velletri)
With Athena behind us, we entered a large room which was full of artefacts from the Greek, or Roman copies of long lost Greek bronzes going back several hundred centuries BC. Bigger than life (they're gods so they should be) statues of Ares, Aphrodites, Zeus, Hermes and such were scattered throughout with smaller, mantle size pieces around the peripheral and reliefs and friezes on the walls.

Zeus, dieu des cieux et maître de l’Olympe
The entire display covered the whole Mediterranean basin from the sixth century AD back to Neolithic times. At the end of the Greek section Venus de Milo, demanding her own room ferried us through to the Etruscan and Roman sections.
Doing an about face, we retraced our steps to the central stairs, descended to the landing, back up to the Egyptian Antiquities section and further to the Near Eastern area in the Richelieu Wing, dominated by Iran and Mesopotamia.
Small alcoves were lined with small figurines of Egyptian history. The larger areas were divided by displays of the same, thereby creating more small alcoves. Almost all of the displays were protected in glass. Interesting stuff, jewellery, trinkets, decorative objects, toys and what seemed like kitchen accessories.

Partial sarcophagus lid
The row of sphinxes nearby was interesting, a half a dozen were impressive enough, but apparently several hundred of them lined the processional way to the Serapeum in Saqqara, which has long since gone. An 1850's tomb raider noticed these at various antique shops around town and put two and two together. It was apparent that some of the sphinxes came from the same place so he went out and found the place, thereby finding all of the sphinxes, buried in sand.
Tumblr media
Six des sphinx qui bordaient l'allée menant au Sérapéum de Saqqara
We then came across the mummy sarcophagi, quite a few mainly protected by glass cabinets. Amongst them all was an actual mummy, a well preserved specimen of a male that lived during the Ptolemaic Period. After death and during the mummification process, he was covered in strips of linen and after receiving more attention to dry him out a bit, was covered in cartonnage which consisted of a mask covering his head, a wide collar over his chest, an apron across his legs and a casing over the feet.
This was one of the highlights of the day, probably for everyone as it was difficult to get close to him.
Tumblr media
Momie recouverte de ses "cartonnages". Mummy covered with its "Cartonnages ". Embalming jars as well
As the Egyptian section finished, the Near Eastern Antiquities started. The Levant was an area located at the western extreme of the Mediterranean but not too far inland. It seemed to encompass modern day Syria, Jordan, down to what is now the Suez Canal and all between. The sarcophagus of Eshmunazar II, King of Sidon was carved around 500BC for a king whose demise was ahead of his time (he died when 14 years old and ruled the kingdom with his mother). Sidon was located in Phoenicia, now Lebanon and later expanded its horizons by being given lands by the Persian "Lord of Kings", Xerxes as reward by providing their naval fleet to the Persian forces.
Tumblr media
The epitaph across the chest and around the head describes a king who died young and curses on anyone who should trouble his rest among the Rephaïm, followed by a genealogy of the royal family, concluding with a final curse on those who would "raise my slab" and remove the sarcophagus.
The next section was Iran followed by Mesopotamia. There was some great stuff here, the highlights being some friezes from the Persian King Darius I back around 500BC. The first was of lions made of a glazed brick and came from Mesopotamia. They were displayed in his Susa palace and was a symbol of power, embodying the king of beasts. The next frieze was not so certain as to its origins. They were the Archers on Parade depicting two symmetrical lines of soldiers, bow and quiver around their shoulders, both hands holding their spears. Very impressive and quite colourful.

Although there was other great stuff in this area, the other impressive artefact was the temple headstock and column (or the colossal capital), one of thirty six that once held up the roof components of the apadana at Susa. A couple of bulls kneeling back to back atop of Egyptian style palm fronds and double volutes with rosettes taken from the temple of Artemis at Ephesus. There wasn't too much in one piece when excavators excavated during the late nineteenth century which explained the colour difference (veined grey limestone brought to the plain of Susa from the Zagros Mountains) due to the capital being reconstructed from bits and pieces of the thirty six columns that originally existed.
Tumblr media

The final part, after a break at the café overlooking Napoléon Hall, was back to the Denon Wing to finish off with a few more statues and some paintings, particularly looking forward to the pushing and shoving in front of the Mona Lisa. After ascending a rather grand staircase we found ourselves on the ground floor amongst the European sculptures before climbing one more floor to the paintings of France, Italy and Spain. One of the final acts of the morning, after wandering through the corridors of religious art was to enter Room 711 where the incredibly underwhelming Mona Lisa proudly hung.

That was it. Louvre over and lunch ahead, followed by the tower. Playing it safe, we headed back to where we knew, via the Carrousel du Louvre underground shopping centre, eventually reaching the surface at Arc de Triompe du Carrousel, watched a weirdo pigeon man walking around dropping wheat out of his pockets and braved the irksome Africans and gypsies trying to con us or flog us something. Once through the cordon of conmen we settled in at the Le Carrousel Bar and Brasserie for pizza and snails.

After lunch we walked back through the gardens towards Place de la Concorde and further to Avenue Winston Churchill, across the road from the Grand Palais. From there we had a good look at our next destination, the Eiffel Tower. Shane and Jo had seen it before so were doing something different while Cec and the boys went to the top. We proceeded as one to the ticket place where they would meet up with their escort for the trip to the top, then separate for a while.

Leaving Cec, Tom and Beau at the meeting place and agreeing to meet below at the tower ticket collection box later on, Jo and Shane headed along Rue de Grenelle a few streets away to Rue Cler for a Rick Steves audio tour starting with Café Rousillon.
Emmanuel Macron lived in an apartment in Rue Cler before becoming president. Even though he and his wife occasionally shopped in the street, business owners and residents were glad to see the back of them after he was voted in as president. From the vote until the inauguration, the lived in Rue Cler but then moved to Palais de l'élysée, the Presidential residence. During that period the extra security, movement restrictions and extra crowds caused the locals some angst until he left and calm was restored. Shop owners lost business due to street closures. It's okay now and they'll probably be welcomed back when he leaves politics.

Taking Rick's advice and saving money by standing for cafés, we then moved across Rue de Grenelle to a neat and village like street, lined with open aired produce stands, made particularly inviting by excluding all but service vehicles beyond the intersection.

Looking down Rue Cler from Café Rousillion
The street had everything. Apparently, many Parisiennes shop for food daily in street markets just like this as not only are they after fresh food, but their apartments are small and so are their fridges. To shop daily may not only be a preference but a necessity.
Immediately on our left was the only supermarket to be seen, albeit typically small. A fruit stall on either side constricted the street but it soon opened up to specialty shops, hotels and banks, hidden behind closed doors and partially obscured by the fishmongers, cheese shops, bakers and butchers who opened their doors wide and spilled their produce onto the street.

La Fromagerie
La Fromagerie has been in Rue Cler for generations, straight across the street was La Sablaise Poissonniere-Traiteur, supplying fresh seafood daily from the English Channel. There were more cafés, where if one desired could have a café and smoke while sitting on the footpath, facing the crowds, Traiteur Jeusselin which served precooked meal portions for people to buy on their way home from work if too busy to cook and Boucherie du Perche. People around the area didn't have a garden per se, but flower boxes hanging from the window sill. They still had an appetite for flowers as the florist was pretty popular.

This was an interesting experience but catering more for the top end of town given some of the prices.
Rue Cler came to an abrupt halt at its intersection with Avenue de la Motte-Piquet. Turning right we followed the avenue to the Cavalerie building on Place Joffre, standing at the top of Champ de Mars, a tree lined and grassed park which would lead us to the Eiffel Tower at the other end.
Tumblr media
The tower at the end of Champ de Mars
Partially down the Champ de Mars we were lucky enough to experience something that made our day. Amongst the families and couples taking it easy around the place, there was a young couple quickly becoming the centre of attention. The young bloke had a couple of mates with him and duly went down on one knee and opened up a jewellery box with a ring in it. Whilst this was happening one of his mates was playing the violin and the other recording everything. We were a bit far away to hear but she must have said yes as those closer started to applaud. A touching moment to soon be over shadowed by the crowds ahead and the hordes of Africans trying to flog models of the tower.
Tumblr media
Romance in Champ de Mars
While this was all happening, Cec, Beau and Thomas were enjoying the city from the top of the tower.
Tumblr media
Looking over Paris
As Jo and Shane moved closer to the proposed meeting point below the tower, it was apparent that it would not go to plan. Considerable construction works were underway to construct a "terrorist proof" fence around the tower. The fence will be made of thick glass that will supposedly stop bullets and car bombers and cost several tens of millions of Euro.
Tumblr media
Let the fence begin
With no communication and our meeting plan in tatter as there was no ticket box to meet as planned and there were 4 different entry/exit points, we had no idea where the crew would emerge from. Jo and Shane headed to the park besides the north rafter and waited. Jo wandered around panicking, Shane just sat, moving around, trying to find a seat without bird shit on it. There were plenty of vacant benches for a reason. Just as annoying were the Africans, they were everywhere trying to make a buck. There didn't seem to be much competition as they were all standing together in small groups selling the same thing, models of the tower. They did however, move pretty quickly when the gendarmes approached. Within not to long spent waiting, firstly Tom and Beau walked out the gate followed a short time later by Cecilia, bitchin about how the group dropping them off somehow and they had to fend for themselves. Anyway, it didn't matter now as we were all together again. When asked how did they enjoy their experience, Cecilia said she was too terrified, fearing that an attack on the tower was imminent, As like all major tourist spots, the area had armed troops patrolling the area and being a large city, sirens wailing through the streets was commonplace, we were use to this from previous travels but this was a new experience for Cecilia , thus fuelling her fear for expecting a disaster was  pending. Beau has an extreme fear of hieghts but was proud of the fact he did manage to stand at the railings of the top level viewing deck, take in the vista, albeit feeling like he left his fingerprints embedded in the steel hand rail.
Tumblr media
Gendarmes causing a stir
The trip back to the apartment was interrupted by a beer at Café Roussillon in the Le Cler district. While here, Beau made a very interesting observation, on visiting the toilet area of the bar. There was only one toilet that had a step up to it, the disabled toilet. What the Heck!! Time to head home. Women taxied; men walked. By then it was after seven, back at the apartment by eight.

Pavarotti's wild life of sex and excess
When opera legend Luciano Pavarotti was on his deathbed, he was visited by his ex-wife who he had left for a woman 34 years her junior. But instead of bitterness, the charming star told ex Adua Veroni she was beautiful and persuaded her to rustle him up his favourite meal of spaghetti bolognese, The Sun reports. Adua was not the only woman Pavarotti put a spell on, as a new documentary from Oscar-winning moviemaker Ron Howard reveals.
Tumblr media
media_cameraThe Pavarotti the public knew best. Picture: QCUA Archives/That's Entertainment! According to his former manager, Herbert Breslin, the singer loved music, women, food and football in that order. The documentary, simply titled Pavarotti and due for release in Australia later this year, details the tenors attitude to sex, with footage of him telling reporters of the virtues of Viagra: Sex is always good for you if your little friend asks for it. It doesnt matter if it is before or after the show. The best thing would be during the show, on the only table on the stage. It also shows how the 150kg singer demanded mounds of pasta, Parmesan cheese and salami when he toured. His idea of dieting was to eat a meal of chicken, beans and mashed potatoes followed by three scoops of ice cream leaving a fourth scoop in the bowl. HE WAS VERY DEMANDING

Pavarotti became the worlds most famous opera star after his Three Tenors concert in 1994 with Spains Plcido Domingo and Jos Carreras. Soccer fans still love him for his rendition of Nessun Dorma, which the BBC used in its coverage of the 1990 World Cup in Italy. But his roots were humble, growing up in Modena, northern Italy. Mum Adele worked in a cigar factory and dad Fernando, who was also a tenor, in a bakery. He was often looked after by his grandmother and said being raised by women left him very much spoiled and loved. His family was by his hospital bedside when he contracted tetanus at 12 and nearly died. The youngster was in a coma for a fortnight and twice given the last rites. The experience made him appreciate life to the fullest and, despite his mums desire for him to become a teacher, the lifelong Juventus fan set about trying to realise his dream of being a goalkeeper. He failed to impress during trials with Modena in the Fifties but, after going on to have voice coaching, soon discovered his perfect pitch had nothing to do with football. Pavarotti, who married Adua in 1961, initially sang in regional opera houses and thought his big break had come when, in 1963, he was asked to stand in for Giuseppe Di Stefano another Italian opera great in La Bohme in Londons West End.

Picture: AP Photo/Carlos Rene Perez It was a success but the tenor would have to tour throughout the Sixties until, after a show in New York in 1972, people really started to take note of his talent. Pavarotti sang Tonio in Donizettis La Fille du Rgiment at the citys Metropolitan Opera, achieving the astonishing feat of hitting nine high Cs in a row. Superstardom had finally arrived. Adua, now 81, who had three daughters with him, recalls in the film: I fell in love with the man, then I fell in love with the voice. Who wouldnt fall in love with the voice of Luciano Pavarotti? Pavarottis conquests included Madalyn Renee, a stunning and talented opera singer who he met in 1979 while doing a masterclass in New York at the top Juilliard School. She became his secretary in exchange for him tutoring her and passion soon flourished. Madalyn recalls the tenor being mischievous and having a schoolboys sense of humour. She says: He would take delight in the little funny things, the stupid things. I was accompanying him on tour, he had 28 suitcases, he never packed a suitcase in his life. He was very demanding God forbid his handkerchiefs were not where they were supposed to be. The relationship was so all-encompassing because I was the friend, the student, the secretary. He was my mentor, my teacher, my love. I never thought I would end up in a relationship with Luciano but it was hard to see where to draw the line. LUCIANO WAS MY GREAT DEFENDER I remember a recital and I was backstage holding his hot tea and all of a sudden he dragged me out on stage to sing La Bohme, the duet the lyrics include, Do you love me? and I do! They eventually broke off their affair because Pavarotti was still married to Adua. Madalyn calls it a painful moment for me and for him. They did not speak for years. With fame also came famous friends. After meeting Princess Diana in 1991, Pavarotti became more involved in charity work.

After the first of these he met Nicoletta Mantovani, who was working at a horseshow between her university studies. She was 23, he was 57. Nicoletta says: At the beginning I told everyone I was the assistant, but that was not true. Its not easy to say Im in a relationship with a man 34 years older. Luciano was my great defender. He was always protecting me. Soon after they got together, she found out she had MS and feared he would leave her. But Pavarotti told her: Up until now I have loved you. Now I adore you. The couple kept their relationship secret for years until they were pictured kissing on holiday in Barbados. Pavarottis fans were appalled by the supposedly devout Catholic. Furious Adua filed for divorce and demanded $128 million. When Pavarotti refused, she reportedly co-operated with an Italian investigation which led to him paying $14 million in back taxes.

Soon after, Pavarotti rubbed salt in the wound by praising the virtues of Viagra to reporters. He and Nicoletta married in 2003. Manager Herbert Breslin popularised Pavarotti by making him do recitals and sending him on a tour of rural America, where he indulged himself in triple helpings of macaroni cheese. It was a new twist on one of Pavarottis other major passions Italian food. At his heaviest, he weighed more than 150kg. In the documentary a fellow Italian opera singer says that Pavarotti asked him to bring kilos of tortellini, Parmesan cheese and salami with him when he visited him on tour.

On a month-long trip to China in 1986, he asked two chefs from Genoa to go with him and at their Beijing hotel, two rooms were turned into a kitchen as he refused to eat Chinese food. Such trips left Pavarotti feeling lonely so he turned to his big entourage to keep him company, including female company. Adua said that his bravado was a sham and after their split the public opinion of Pavarotti changed and the image of the sublime singer fell. I WASNT THE FATHER I WANTED TO BE Around this time Nicoletta became pregnant with twins the son was stillborn but the daughter, Alice, became a light in Pavarottis life. In the later stages of his career, Pavarotti was hammered by critics, who said his arrogance, once unquestioned as part of his talent, was now unacceptable. He failed to show up at concerts and bumbled his way through shows, cracking jokes to stall for time. Pavarotti continued looking for new collaborators and persuaded Bono to do a song with him, bombarding his Italian housekeeper with phone calls. He eventually turned up on Bonos doorstep in Dublin and forced him into the studio.

media_cameraDirector Ron Howards new film tells the untold story of the Italian opera icon. Picture: Christopher Smith/Invision/AP, File The result was the haunting Miss Sarajevo, for the victims of war in the former Yugoslavia. In the film, Bono jokingly calls Pavarotti one of the great emotional arm wrestlers he will break your f***ing arm. In 2004, Pavarotti began a 40-concert tour but got criticised by sniffy opera fans for not hitting the notes like he used to. The U2 frontman said the cracks in his voice were a sign he has lived these songs and that he had to break his heart again and again to sing them. In 2006, before the tour was finished, Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, prompting a tumultuous final 14 months of his life. His friend of 30 years, Dr Lidia La Marca, claimed Nicoletta was trying to force him to sign an American will. Pavarotti supposedly confided to Dr La Marca that he was thinking of leaving Nicoletta and changed his will two weeks before he died to cut her out. He died in September 2007, aged 71, in Modena, where 50,000 people filed past his coffin in respect. A year-long legal battle between Adua and her three daughters and Nicoletta ensued over his $450 million fortune. They eventually agreed a settlement. Had Pavarotti been alive, he would have doubtless tried to end the conflict. In a home video shot in his last months, he admits one of his few regrets was that he wasnt the father I wanted to be. But he said it with a smile and while wearing a Hawaiian shirt. Even at the end, he had not lost any of his charm. This story originally appeared on The Sun and is republished here with permission. Tony Robbins Agrees With Me
The method myth is answerable for the failure of maximum organizations In keeping with Tony Robbins in his White Paper, Mindset Over Advertising. Alas, most might be entrepreneurs are doomed to fail because they do not simply recognize what it takes to achieve success. They observe conventional questioning and location they agree within the strategy myth, he says.
The strategy fantasy is based on the idea that the fundamentals of the business are a killer product, a high-quality goal marketplace, and a properly written business plan. This could no longer create lasting achievement says Tony, the achievement guru. at the same time as the approach is necessary, business owners first should set up the true foundation of entrepreneurial fulfillment; vision, ardor, and Mindset.
Anthony Robbins is a leadership and peak performance expert and he applies the eighty/20 rule to the look at of achievement. He states that in nearly each condition, 80 percentage of fulfillment is due to psychology-Attitude, ideas, and feelings and handiest 20 percentage is due to method or movement.
See, I informed you Tony Robbins Is of the same opinion with me. That is something I harp on approximately all of the time. Attitude, Mindset, Mindset. Tony and i do not come at this from precisely the equal perspective, although. I have by no means heard him communicate about the Regulation of Enchantment, and I am no longer Certain if he subscribes to it or no longer.
Whether or not you accept as true with inside the LOA or not, like I do, one component is sure. Anyone who makes a has a look at of fulfillment could agree that Attitude is an important factor in achievement, regardless of what the precise cause is.
If this is the case then, why achieve this few commercial enterprise people absolutely vicinity plenty emphasis on wondering or supply it any critical consideration? possibly because-because the appearance of the Scientific Age, we’ve based our ideas on evidence, on the concrete, on what We will see and contact. Mindset or thinking is incredibly ephemeral. It can’t be visible or evaluated and it’s miles difficult to define.
Mindset is an internal exercise and education and particularly business schooling and indeed all sorts of know-how are outside paperwork like facts or information. We are able to manipulate and evaluate outside practices like balance sheets, commercial enterprise plans, and strategies. How can we train and evaluate thinking? How can we test beliefs and grade hence? The reality is we can not due to the fact our information of Mindset is still in large part theoretical.
As a High School teacher, I used to be appalled at the shortage of hobby in wondering as a topic even the various instructors, and I used to be also appalled At the initial outcomes my students attained with the conventional statistics based coaching that I had been taught to apply.
Being the obsessive and (in those days) perfectionistic kind, I needed to give you a technique that might reap higher consequences. Lamentably, maximum of my English and Social Technological know-how college students simply didn’t ‘get’ How to compare a topic, shape a response and write a powerful essay, something that I should do without difficulty. So, I asked myself, ‘What procedure does my mind go through that allows you to obtain this assignment effectively?’
I quick realized that if I taught my students How to suppose then they’d the tools no longer only to write down essays, However, to understand the troubles involved in any selection making pastime. The effects were surprising and the development in overall performance attracted the attention of the administration. Lengthy story, But had been my attempts to educate the lecturers this system established and included into the College curriculum? Of route now not, because Bertrand Russell becomes proper when he said, ‘Most people might as an alternative die than assume,’ and that includes instructors.
As increasingly more human beings move into business and far away from the security of the job marketplace, it turns into even extra vital for the look at of enterprise to include the coaching of wondering as a legitimate area of examine.
How lots money and time do you spend money on taking control of your Mindset and learning to think like a real entrepreneur?
