#sometimes i wonder how things would've been different if mercedes had been the main character instead of rachel#and not even bc i'm not a fan of rachel i just feel like narratively considering both of their characters.....mercedes works much better#the concept they were going for w rachel fell apart after like s1 bc they started trying really hard to make the audience feel bad for her#she'd make a poor decision but it wasn't allowed to just exist as a poor decision the writers would do the most to make her seem justified#the narrative would always prioritize her and try to justify every single thing she did which created a lot of problems#and the concept of rachel's character as this driven and ambitious person with big dreams who will stop at nothing to make them happen#is such a compelling idea and would've worked so well if she wasn't the main character if she was doing things people were horrified by#but always in the name of self preservation and making her dreams come true she would do anything to make that happen#that's interesting and that has a lot of potential#mercedes was never like that mercedes at her core is someone who will be supportive and kind and warm to everyone#she's always believed success for her doesn't need to come at the cost of someone else#she's friends with most of the characters early on and she's very easy to root for#the writers honestly wouldn't have had to do much to convince people because her characterization supports being a main so well#the reason this gets me is bc w rachel it's like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too wanted her to be cutthroat and ambitious#but also humanize every single decision and lather on audience sympathy for everything#that....doesn't work w the concept of her character it's like they tried to have the best of both and they contradict each other#god just......this is one of those things that makes me so sad lol mercedes as a main character would've fixed so many problems#ik it was 2009 and the world would not have received it well but in a perfect world she would've been legendary#and i'm so sad it didn't happen

P J’s PokéAni Trivia Tuesday #13 (Global Tour edition)
This is part 3 of 5 PTTs digging into some really cool PokéAni facts from all over the world! This week’s global research was MASSIVE! I really wanted to cover as much EU as I can, since I know a lot of people in this fandom coming from Europe, but tried to make my post as minimal as I can! Due to a lot of info I’ve read, I will only mention 1 or 2 facts for each country (except U.K.). Good thing I had 2 weeks to prepare for this, otherwise this thing would have been more stressful to put together. Shoutout to all my European PokéAni peeps reading this! Let’s see if you may or may not know the trivia behind these countries 👀
Pokémon anime in EUROPE
Tumblr media
In the UNITED KINGDOM DID YOU KNOW? The Pokémon anime famously aired on ITV, a public service network station that broadcasts in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
SM:TV Live was a live Saturday morning entertainment show that replace the Who's That Pokémon? segment with small sketches that featured the famous English comedic duo, Ant & Dec as hosts, having their own "PokéFight" and even performed their own Pokérap.
ITV has skipped episodes or canceled airings mid-series. These are planned as the TV guides published over a week before date of transmission reflect this. It commonly happens other animated shows in the line-up such as ReBoot, Cardcaptors, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh!.
Pokémon has been cancelled prematurely TWICE on different TV channels! Once during the Orange Islands arc, and another just after Pokémon: Advanced started. Neither series has been seen on ITV since.
CN (Cartoon Network) TOO was the channel location for the world premiere of Pokémon Chronicles. The U.K. got their English dubbed The Legend of Thunder! specials first than the U.S. by a year early.
In other EU COUNTRIES DID YOU KNOW?
Tumblr media
In the Netherlands (Ik wil ze allemaal!), Fox Kids announced that it would stop broadcasting Pokémon on March 2001. Around 32,000 complaining children called to Fox Kids in outrage because of this, but it turned out to be an early April Fool’s joke. On April 1st, the channel announced that the 3rd season of the anime would begin airing the same day. GOT’EEM!!!
In Iceland (Þarf að fanga þá!), only the first 54 episodes of the 1st season aired. The first five movies were also dubbed. They pulled the plug on the Icelandic dub due to the lack of popularity it received in the country.
In Finland (Omakseni saan!), it was the first Nordic country to air the Pokémon anime, with Denmark, Norway and Sweden followed shortly in the spring of 2000. While it may have been the first, many episodes of the first couple of seasons in the Finnish dub were not shown (or skipped?) for unknown reasons. In fact, Advanced Challenge was the first ever season to be shown completely in the country, and moving forward after that, every season have been broadcasted entirety as well.
In Sweden (Måste fånga fler!), the Battle Frontier season broadcasted exclusively online via TV4+ and TV4′s site, as it got skipped and did not air after Advanced Battle, going directly to the Diamond & Pearl series.
In the Czech Republic (Všechny chytit máš!), Ash Ketchum’s voice actor was Radek Škvor, who was 10 years old at the time when the series first reached the country. He was same age as his assigned character! Eventually he got replaced by his older brother, Jan Škvor some time during the XY series. Ash may be 10 forever, but not the VAs.
In Belgium, the Pokémon anime is distributed in two dubbed languages: Flanders (Belgian Dutch) and Wallonia (Belgian French).
Tumblr media
In France (Attrapez-les tous!), they had an unprecedented 2-hour special for the first four episodes of the XY series on May 1st 2015 along with a bonus special airing Mega Evolution Special I afterwards. They did ANOTHER 2-hour special on April 13th 2016 with the premier of the first four episodes of the XY&Z season. The French sure do love the Kalos region...I mean isn’t Kalos based on the country of France?
In Greece (Τα θέλω τώρα εδώ! Ta thélo̱ tóra edó̱!), the anime first aired on Star Channel until it moved to Disney XD when they acquired the rights during Diamond & Pearl. Despite this, irregular broadcasts of specials and movies still show on Star Channel, especially during holiday seasons, but the regular series airs exclusively on Disney XD.
In Italy (Acchiappali tutti!), Brock's first Italian VA was Nicola Bartolini Carrassi. Who is Nicola you ask? He is a journalist, anchor, scriptwriter, anime expert, and the man who brought the Pokémon franchise to Italy in the first place. He has been chosen by Warner Bros, 4Kids, Pokémon INC., Nintendo Games Freak and Buena Vista to become the Italian dubbed voice of Brock and he has been praised for his work, even if it was only for 2 seasons. He left the show after the Orange Islands arc.
In Poland (Czy już wszystkie masz?), when the tenth season was dubbed by a new studio, Sun Studio Polska, they decided to ignore the previous cast of the series and choose all new actors for every character. There were a lot of mixed reactions among fans to the sudden recast, but in February 2009 when DP: Battle Dimension started, most of the original cast of the Polish dub were restored.
In Portugal (Vou apanhá-los todos!), the show aired in an irregular pattern, shifting from 6am to 10am, but it always in the same programing block, named LOL@SIC. On a side note, Ash Ketchum had no less than ten different Portuguese VAs over the years. Y I K E S
In Spain (¡Hazte con todos!), Adolfo Moreno has provided the voice of Ash Ketchum in the entire anime. This is quite rare as a lot of foreign dubs, constantly change VAs for their cast, and even the English dub had to recast Ash’s voice after Battle Frontier. One exception is the 3rd Pokémon movie and the Mewtwo Returns special since it had a different VA cast. On another interesting note, there were 2 different dubs for the Pokémon anime in Spain: an Iberian Spanish dub, and a Catalan dub.
Tumblr media
In Norway (Fanger alle nå!), the setting of the Pokémon movie Giratina and the Sky Warrior is based on Norway's nature. Three places were used as inspiration; Sognefjorden, Jostedalsbreen, and Bergen. The scene with the Glacier threatening to destroy the town was based on a little town of Geiranger, which is threatened by a collapsing mountainside in real life! Speaking of other movie trivia, the single Don't Say You Love Me, promoting the official soundtrack worldwide for Pokémon the First Movie, was performed by the Norwegian group M2M.
In Denmark (Jeg ska' fange dem!), the anime took a 3-season break from Danish TV after the episode Charizard Chiils. The series would not return until Address Unown! (with a new cast of voice actors) leaving no explanation as to why the episodes in between were never aired.
In Ireland, there is no Irish dub in the country since over 90% of people there speaks English as their primary language, and what they got was the English dub from the United States. For some reason though, two episodes from the Hoenn saga didn’t air. Specifically speaking the episodes: The Bicker the Better and Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut?.
In Slovakia, only the first four seasons of the anime have been dubbed into Slovak, nothing else after. All the English theme songs were left in their original form, untranslated, however the Pokémon movies had both their opening and ending themes Slovak dubbed.
In Albania (Duhet ti kap!), Pokémon movies were dubbed in Albanian by "Jess" Discographic. This company is recognized for providing "illegal" dubbings of other shows they have done.
In Lithuania, the Pokémon anime debuted the Lithuanian dub at Christmas Eve of 2005 on BTV. The first seven Pokémon movies, on the other hand, aired at different channels, though the dates of their original airings cannot be traced and have gone lost.
Tumblr media
In Germany (Komm und schnapp sie dir!), one of Ash’s German VAs is named Veronika Neugebauer. She shares the same name (sort of) with Verinoca Taylor who is famous for being the original English dub voice actress for Ash. Unfortunately, Neugebauer died during the production of dubbing Diamond & Pearl, and they had to bring back the original German VA for Ash, Caroline Combrinck, who previously quit the show to study in New York City. Ash is currently voiced by, Felix Mayer, Sun & Moon. *Also I want to briefly mention one of the largest German Pokéfan sites: Filb.de. because I have been to that site a lot looking at screen-caps, and even using some of them for my posts (specifically PokéAni Highlights/Rewind). Basically the German Serebii.net!
In Croatia (Fes-te'ls tots teus!), they have dubbed a few Pokémon movies in their language, however the theme music remained in English.
In Romania (Să îi prind pe toți!), the Romanian dub has aired the first 5 seasons in the country, but everything else after that was skipped EXCEPT Diamond & Pearl (Sinnoh League Victors was SKIPPED though), and Sun & Moon which just recently debuted last month (as of this post).
In Serbia (Треба да скупиш све Treba da skupiš sve!), the only seasons to be fully dubbed in Serbian dubbed is the original series and Black & White. Advanced Challenge, and some of Pokémon Chronicles were dubbed as well. In the very few Pokémon movies they have dubbed, the opening and ending themes remained in English.
In Bulgaria (Да ги уловим! Da gi ulovim!), the anime was originally broadcasted on Nova Television, but eventually made the jump to Disney Channel Bulgaria. Some other countries air the series on Disney as well, so I guess America wasn’t the first country to make the jump, huh?
In Russia (Всех их соберём! Vsekh ikh soberyom!), after the first 104 episodes of the original series were shown, the Pokémon anime was not broadcasted in Russia for SEVEN years. Many Russian fans wrote to TV channels asking them to bring back the anime. Countless rumors of why the ORT channel pulled the anime off air included: newspapers and the yellow press pressuring the station to cancel the show for showing “offensive” content, while some say that Pokémon was “brainwashing children with subliminal stimuli”. ORT was worried about its reputation, so they stopped airing Pokémon, and that they couldn’t make an agreement on the price of licensing the anime with the Japanese creators. On September 20th 2008, the Pokémon anime made its miraculous return to Russian television via the TNT channel, where they premiered the first episode of the Diamond & Pearl series.

How To Win Your Audience Over Using Effective Communications
In Faust I, a masterpiece of German literature, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote, “Words are mere sound and smoke.” But is this really the case?
Hardly. Words carry meaning and ideas, and choosing the right words is vital to winning people over, be it in politics, advertising or your personal life. Anytime we talk to our colleagues, our boss, our children or friends, we have to weigh our words carefully in order to get our message across.
How can we find words that convey our message as intended? This post explains exactly how people will understand your words and why their interpretations might differ from what you actually mean. Find out how to make your message stick in your audience’s mind and how to use language most effectively.
Effective communication is about considering your audience.
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your words were totally misinterpreted? Have you thought you were saying one thing only to find the other person heard something entirely different?
If this has happened to you, there are likely some flaws in how you communicate; that is to say, your words have failed you. But you’re not alone. In fact, flawed language habits are so widespread that we encounter misunderstandings in everything from politics to business to everyday life.
This is the case because everyone has a different understanding of words. As such, two different words that technically denote the same thing can elicit entirely different reactions.
For instance, “welfare” and “assistance to the poor” essentially mean the same thing. But if you ask Americans, only 23 percent will say that the country is spending too little on welfare, while 68 percent think there is too little “assistance to the poor.”
Clearly, different ways of communicating the same idea hold contrasting connotations. So, while “welfare” conjures up images of “welfare queens” and wasteful government spending, “assistance to the poor” reminds people of charity and Christian compassion.
Effective communication isn’t about your message or what your words objectively mean, but rather how people understand them. It’s essential to consider your audience’s preconceptions, especially their beliefs and fears.
Take the English novelist George Orwell, who knew this well and whose famous book 1984 played on the deep personal fears of his readers.
For instance, one passage describes “Room 101” as a place where one is confronted with her greatest fears. Since the fears of every reader are different, Room 101 became associated with the personal nightmares of any given reader.
Effective language is clear, simple and well organized.
How often do you pick up a dictionary and look up a word you don’t know? For many people, the answer would be seldom – or not at all. And that’s fine! After all, if you get used to using words so sophisticated that they are barely understood, your message is unlikely to be received. Thus, it’s often best to stick with clear and direct wording.
Effective language is easy to understand. But how can you make yours as effective as possible?
First of all, it’s important to use simple words and brief sentences; the more simply you present ideas, the more likely they are to be received. In the end, shorter words always have a bigger impact. Just take Apple’s Mac computer, which was originally named Macintosh.
Shorter sentences are also more easily remembered. For instance, many Americans remember Dwight Eisenhower’s 1952 campaign slogan “I like Ike,” which used the then-presidential candidate’s nickname.
By the same token, ignoring the rule of simplicity can mean big trouble. One reason John Kerry lost the 2004 presidential election was because the average American could hardly understand him. He tended to use overly complicated words and sentences that were far too long.
For example, he spoke of his preference for a “progressive internationalism” over the “too often belligerent and myopic unilateralism of the Bush Administration.” In the end, many Americans had no clue what he was talking about.
it’s also important to carefully explain the relevance of your message, which means giving context. This is easy to do by arranging your message in the right order.
For instance, if you want to offer a solution, your audience first needs to know why there’s a problem; without the initial context, your message is worthless.
Take 1920 presidential candidate Warren G. Harding’s famous “Back to normalcy” campaign. His effort was successful because he began by explaining how the political climate of the post-World War I United States was one of chaos and disorientation. Once he had given this context he offered the solution that could restore stability: himself.
Effective language appeals to the audience's imagination and senses.
It might not seem like it, but language is extraordinarily powerful. Just think about how putting together certain words, like a giraffe on a bike, can paint a vivid mental image in the minds of your audience. Such a powerful mental picture forms because people struggle to resist imagining a long-necked creature, helplessly pedaling on a bicycle that’s far too small for it.
In fact, the strength of the human imagination makes appealing to your audience’s imaginative senses a powerful tool for conveying your message. To do so, it’s essential to create a strong image in your audience’s mind – in other words, to sensualize.
For example, good advertising slogans often employ language that grabs your imagination and senses. Just take M&M’s famous slogan, “melts in your mouth. . .” When you hear it, you can practically feel the chocolate on your tongue.
And there’s an easy way to trigger this sensualization with one simple word: “imagine.” When you ask someone to imagine something, you’re asking them to generate their own personalized vision based on their deepest emotions and desires. Naturally, this makes for a powerful image and also explains why John Lennon’s song Imagine is among his most beloved and famous.
Alongside its visual components, the sonic quality of language also plays a central role. As such, you can achieve even greater success by utilizing the musical qualities of words. For instance, you can use words that sound similar together to make them more memorable. Returning to M&M’s famous slogan, the repetition of the letter M in “Melts in your Mouth. . .” makes the slogan stick, and the same goes for “Intel Inside.”
Another sonic strategy is to use words that sound like what you’re describing. For instance, when you hear “Snap, Crackle and Pop,” the slogan of Kellog’s Rice Krispies, you get a perfect sense of what it sounds like to be eating the cereal.
Effective language directly addresses people’s emotions.
Hollywood writers live by the rule that their words should stir up emotions in viewers. They know that when language touches a person’s feelings, it leaves a lasting impression in her memory.
The key to accomplishing this is to find words that either apply to a situation everyone is familiar with, a strategy called humanization, or even better, to their personal life experience, a technique called personalization.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech is a great example of humanization. The message of the speech is that people shouldn’t be judged by their appearance but by their character. This applied not only to the black members of his audience, but to the guiding principles of all Americans and, for that matter, human beings.
In everyday contexts, advertisers use humanization and personalization all the time to appeal to our individual life experiences and demonstrate that consuming their product will make our lives better. For instance, the skin-care line Olay uses the slogan “Love the skin you’re in.” This phrase plays on a sense of self-worth that anyone can relate to.
Another excellent tool for making an emotional impact is to ask questions. Addressing your audience with a question that begs a direct response will trigger a thought process and lead them to a conclusion.
So, if you reveal the conclusion to your audience right off the bat, they’ll be less invested and interested in what you have to say. But if they reach an opinion on their own, it’ll come with a profound emotional impact.
For example, during the 1980 US presidential debate, Ronald Reagan posed a very simple question to voters: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” By asking this question, he prompted a thought process that led the audience to realize that the country had indeed gotten worse under then-president Jimmy Carter, and famously resulted in Reagan sweeping to a huge victory in the presidential election.
Strong language combines the well known with surprises – and does so with credibility.
So, you’ve learned some important skills for getting your point across; but it’s also important to know about the major pitfalls that should be avoided. When it comes to communicating, two stand out in particular: boring your audience with old information and overwhelming them with new ideas.
After all, the key to effective language is striking the perfect balance between consistency and novelty. For instance, many companies make the mistake of changing their slogans too frequently.
Take Coca-Cola: can you think of the company’s current tagline? Probably not, since they change it all the time, a practice that has wreaked havoc for their image. For example, from 2009 to 2016, their slogan was “Open happiness,” but in 2016, it switched to “Taste the feeling.”
Compare this to Wheaties, a company that still uses a tagline it created in 1935 with great success: “The breakfast of champions.”
On the other hand, people are also easily bored. So, along with your consistency, you’ll need something novel that surprises people and grabs their attention. In the 1950s, when cars were getting bigger every day, Volkswagen shocked car buyers with its successful campaign, “Think Small.”
It’s also critical to communicate your credibility effectively. To do so, make sure your words don’t contradict common perceptions and facts. For instance, during his 2000 presidential campaign, Al Gore became the butt of endless jokes and lost credibility when he claimed that he “invented” the Internet.
Finally, it’s important to remain authentic. The easiest way to accomplish this is by turning your words into actions. During the 1992 presidential election campaign, George Bush Sr. famously said, “Message: I Care.”
While he obviously wasn’t supposed to read out loud this note written on his cue cards, he also failed to communicate that his politics were caring in any way. Meanwhile, his opponent Bill Clinton said he would “Put people first” and explained how he’d do so by providing healthcare and high-quality education. Of course, Clinton went on to win the election.
Knowing your audience is essential to effective communication.
So far you’ve learned how effective language can get your message across in the way you intended. But for language to be truly effective you need to understand something else: your audience. More specifically, you need to know your audience’s hopes, beliefs and preconceptions.
For instance, if your audience is American, you should be aware of common misconceptions about average Americans, such as the assumption that many of them are highly educated. This is important because when you look at Americans older than 45, only 29 percent hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. Barely one in four Americans over 25 are college educated.
Another common misconception about Americans is that they vote based on a candidate’s political agenda. In reality, the majority don’t know or care about political opinions; instead, they are focused on the type of person a candidate is – on their character, image and trustworthiness.
Consider the actions of George W. Bush during the national turmoil that followed 9/11. In retrospect, it’s clear that his policy wasn’t very effective – but Bush knew his audience extremely well. He knew that Americans wanted a commander-in-chief who was strong and determined to secure freedom for the United States and people across the world.
He also managed to convey this image successfully, which resulted in increased popularity and his reelection in 2004.
Another aspect of your audience that’s important to keep in mind is how they perceive specific, frequently used words. Again, if your audience is American, it’s crucial to know how words like “freedom”, “fairness” and “opportunity” are perceived in the local culture.
After all, you might think that the word “freedom” carries a positive connotation, but it was so overused during the George W. Bush administration that it has become closely associated with the Republican Party.
Similarly, “fairness” has become associated with the Democrats, as it is a word they use very frequently. On the other hand, a middle-of-the-road term that most Americans like is “opportunity” – a word with no associations with either political party.
Effective communication can help you every day.
Now that you know the ins and outs of effective language, how can it help you in your day-to-day life? Well, imagine you’re running late for a flight and the plane’s door has already closed. How can you use effective communication to get on the plane?
Start by understanding the situation of your audience, in this case, the airport employees. In their eyes, opening the door again is a major hassle. Therefore, you’re completely at their mercy and you will need to beg – but be sure to start and end your plea with the word “please.”
You can then tell them a story that makes it clear how catching this plane will change your life and why they should help you. For instance, you could say it’s a family emergency or a life-changing job interview, something that anyone could relate to. At the same time, you should assure them you’ll be eternally grateful.
Effective communication can also bail you out when you get pulled over for speeding. In this situation, you again need to understand the situation of your audience: the police officer.
In contrast to the case of the airline employees, the cop could do you a favor without causing himself any additional work or hassle; after all, writing a ticket will produce extra paperwork that he certainly wouldn’t be excited to fill out. Next, you should show that you’re not a threat by turning off your engine, rolling down your window, placing both hands on the wheel and having your license and registration ready to go.
Remember, cops have a dangerous job and never know if the person they’ve pulled over is a total lunatic!
Finally, you’ll want to show how grateful you are, respect the officer’s authority and be honest about violating the law. So, when the cop reaches your window, make eye contact and be sure the first words out of your mouth are, “I’m sorry, officer.”
While this approach can’t guarantee you’ll dodge a ticket, it will boost your chances. After all, language isn’t magic, but it is a powerful tool to help you get what you want.
Everybody interprets language differently, and this important fact makes the dictionary definition of your words far less important than the way they are received. Effective language is all about taking the views of your audience into account and choosing the words that will have the greatest impact upon them.

A Look Inside the Amazing Hot Rod Collection of Racer-Turned-Rodder Paul Gommi
Spirited.
Growing up on the East Coast, Paul Gommi wasn’t predestined to experience a truly intense gearhead life. He started out painting and studying fine art, following in his dad’s footsteps. The elder Gommi, an artist as well, learned photography during World War II, taking epic pictures of military battles at sea before turning into an acclaimed professional photographer. He specialized in food photography for advertisement.
Like many kids in the 1950s and ’60s, Paul came to appreciate cars, which led him to become a drag racer, starting with a small Austin Bantam roadster and quickly progressing to Top Fuel. He won no less than 30 meets at Eastern dragstrips in 1963-1964.
Building some road racing Lotus/Ford engines for a friend led to Paul getting a call from Carroll Shelby. He wanted Paul to build V8s for his Trans-Am Mustangs and to develop engines for the GT40s raced at Le Mans. After the Le Mans wins, Keith Black hired him to develop the 426ci engine for drag and boat racing; but he also built motors for the Miss Chrysler Crew, the Hawaiian dragsters, the Super Chief Funny Car, and more. Other notable accomplishments include designing the first three-disc clutch, the bottom oiler, and running the first fullsize rear wing on a dragster.
We also owe to him the first successful rear-engine dragster on the West Coast. That rail set track records at Irwindale, Seattle, Orange County International Raceway, and Lions. One of the most unusual pieces of engineering he created was a rear-engine rail with dual blowers. It performed very well during the first tests; so much so that the NHRA decided to ban it, supposedly because the setup was “too dangerous,” a claim that Paul rebuffs to this day.
From 1974 until 1986, he owned an advertising agency that was based in an office located behind his house, which is now part of his large garage. He handled customers well known within the performance industry, such as Comp Cams, TCI Automotive, Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS), Venolia, and Simpson.
Through the 1970s and ’80s, Paul began chasing old race cars, eventually stumbling upon the ex-Ike Iacono Ford Model A roadster that he campaigned with friends, using a flathead V8. He also located the heavily chopped ’34 Bonneville coupe raced by Don Ferguson in the 1940s. The plan was to compete again on the salt with it; but it did not happen as the event was rained out two years in a row. Eventually, his successful advertising enterprise allowed him to retire in 1986, and he soon got busy competitively running a Nostalgia Top Fuel dragster. But a spectacular crash at Famoso Raceway in 1993, when a pinion shaft broke at 180 mph, ended his career as a pilot.
The accident did not stop him from playing with cars—far from it. Paul focused his attention on hot rods, with a keen eye to aesthetics. Being an accomplished painter/artist gave him a unique perspective on the hobby. He realized machines can be built into art, though they should remain fully functional. He also believes beauty evolves from the graceful lines found in nature, with no sharp angles.
Case in point: Paul’s well-known orange ’34 Cabriolet. The goal for this project was to improve on its function and good looks, without using (visually) anything that would not have been available from 1930 until 1940. As an artist, he noticed the louvers on the hood sides made the vehicle appear shorter and taller; so, he chose to adapt horizontal ’36 Ford vents. There are many other visual details made to enhance the car’s lines, including the lack of rubber on the running boards or the spare wheel installed closer to the body.
His passion for old Fords also inspired Paul to restore some of the rarest early V8 models to their factory stock appearance. Among them are several Dearborn Award Winners, such as a ’34 roadster pickup (only 14 were made) and the first ’33 prototype car, the roadster designed by Edsel Ford and E.T. Gregory. All these “stockers” have found new owners since; but his home garage, located near the port of Long Beach, still houses a few fantastic hot rods. The ’34 Cabriolet mentioned earlier, equipped with a license plate reading “WAWEWER” (Way We Were) is part of the fleet, along with his amazing 301A ’32 roadster, detailed in our sidebar.
Another desirable Deuce is the green panel delivery that was used by a company called Paul’s Appliance Service (no relation) until 1967. He bought it in the early 1970s and drove it daily for years, adding several hard-to-find goodies, including the Pines Winterfront grille. Motivation comes from a ’49 Ford flathead V8 fitted with Stromberg carbs, an Isky cam, and Offenhauser heads. Note the ’41 Ford truck headlights.
The fourth car sitting in Paul’s shrine is an original paint ’33 Ford tudor. This project will receive a supercharged stroker 24-stud flathead with a cam of Gommi’s own design, along with a host of other unique improvements. Incidentally, the sedan has taken the spot of his famous black Deuce Ford phaeton that he entered in the 2014 Grand National Roadster Show but sold afterward, a move he regrets to this day. Paul spent 6,000 hours on this build, inspired by the 1940s and early ’50s hot rods. It features a ton of rare components: ’32 Pines Winterfront grille, 25-louver hood, ’32 Auburn dash panel, ’49 S.Co.T. supercharger, and more.
As you can see from the pictures, the four-car garage is well equipped, while the adjacent room is now used for parts storage and component assembly. Except for a few modern tools, everything here is period correct, including a Kwik-Way valve-grinding machine and vintage enamel signs. One wall has an impressive display of desirable components, such as ’32 grilles. Paul loves to tinker with flathead V8s (always his engine of choice), which explains why you will see three of them in the photos. He has loads of parts neatly organized in bins to complete his projects. A couple of glass cases are home to photos of his former race and show winners, along with numerous trophies he has won over the decades.
As a true hot rodder, Paul spends many hours in his garage. We certainly can’t blame him, considering his selection of cars and parts. Talk about a great way to enjoy your retirement years!
Here is where you will find Paul on most days. Period light fixtures and enamel signs nicely complement the four cars of ’32 to ’34 vintage, with the latest project being the maroon ’33 sedan. Still featuring its original paint and interior, it was found in a garage where it had been sitting for half a century.
Paul has owned his ’34 Cabriolet since the 1970s. In its first Resto Rod iteration with beige paint, it won Best ’33-’34 honors at the 1981 NSRA Street Rod Nats West, before adopting new orange garb and many subtle alterations in the 1990s.
See the “Paul’s Appliance Service” lettering? It was applied shortly after Paul Booher purchased the (rare) panel in 1932. Gommi has been driving it since 1972. Motivation comes from a hopped-up ’49 flathead.
Everywhere you look, you will find unusual parts stored in bins or hanging on walls. That Deuce grille in the middle is a highly-desirable Pines Winterfront piece, characterized by its vertical panels, which closed for cold weather warm-ups.
Over the years, Paul has come to appreciate flathead V8s, hence you’ll see several of them in his shop, either built or in the process of being assembled. This example runs a rare S.Co.T. supercharger with dual Strombergs.
Originally Paul’s office back in the 1980s, the space adjacent to the four-car garage has been converted into a parts/assembly room.
Jackets serving as mementos to our hobby’s past have become highly collectible. Paul did not need to buy this one, as he won it after setting a track record at Lions Drag Strip in 1971.
Gommi has been collecting desirable accessories for years, as evidenced by these packed shelves. Ford scripts, license plate toppers, toys, taillights of all kinds, about 20 gauges and 20 shift knobs… See anything you like?
HRD readers might remember this Deluxe V8 Phaeton from when Paul entered the tub in AMBR competition in 2014. One of 978 assembled in 1932 and personalized (almost) solely with pre-1945 goodies, the phaeton has since gone to one of Paul’s friends.
The prestigious Dearborn Award honors the best Ford-based restorations in the nation every year. Paul has won eight times, including in 1988 with this ’32 roadster equipped with numerous rare parts.
Paul went home with another Dearborn award in 1988 for highest-scoring ’33-’34 Ford, with his prototype ’33 Standard roadster. Later production models featured 160 changes compared to this car, such as the skirted front fenders.
Ever Evolving
Longtime Deluxe readers might remember this ’32 roadster, which graced our pages almost a decade ago (“Built to Drive,” May 2009). Helped with atypical parts from Paul’s stash, the vehicle is constantly evolving, hence we decided to take another look at it.
A group of G.I.s built it on a budget in 1947, as they wanted to go dry lakes racing, leading to a top speed of 129 mph at El Mirage two years later. It also participated in the first Hot Rod Exposition at the Los Angeles Armory in 1948. The team went their separate ways in 1952, and the car ended up in a storage building for decades until Paul found the hulk and revived it. The current 231ci 21-stud flathead powerplant runs a S.Co.T. supercharger with custom pulleys, plus dual Strombergs topped with uncommon filters made on the East Coast. Paul is now assembling a 290ci 24-stud V8 with a 4-71 supercharger, planned to be ready for the October 2018 RPM Nationals.
As you can see from the pictures, he picked a handful of rare parts from his collection to dress the roadster: a radiator cap cast from a $25,000 Lalique crystal cap, 18- and 20-inch Chrysler high-clearance wheels, a ’32 Chrysler gauge cluster, Philco radio control head (linked to a modern FM radio behind the dash and complemented with drive-in speakers), and a supercharger boost gauge from a WWII plane. Best of all, Paul does not hesitate to cruise in his old roadster anywhere and everywhere.
Racing Days
1964: Paul’s first drag car was a diminutive Austin Bantam, seen racing at Connecticut Dragway. Notice the East Coast-style square roll bar, as well as his ’52 Ford wagon tow car in the background.
1965: After competing with an Olds-powered front-engine rail, Paul campaigned this lightweight dragster motivated by a supercharged Hemi V8. “That’s not a burnout,” alleges Paul. “Burnouts had not been invented yet.”
1965: After competing with an Olds-powered front-engine rail, Paul campaigned this lightweight dragster motivated by a supercharged Hemi V8. “That’s not a burnout,” alleges Paul. “Burnouts had not been invented yet.”
1972: Paul remembers: “The track record at Denver was 205 mph by Garlits. During the first run, my twin-supercharged dragster ran 220 mph. The NHRA immediately banned twin superchargers.” He made the two-piece car for two reasons: It could fit in his garage, and it allowed him to quickly install a new back section with engine, in case the latter blew up.
1975: Seen at OCIR during an early nostalgia race, Paul’s Deuce ran with a junkyard 350ci Chevy and a nitrous oxide system he and Mike Thermos made. He beat the highly touted Dick Scritchfield roadster.
1983: Gommi won his class at the Antique Nationals with the Iacono Model A, which he unearthed in a garage near the port of Long Beach. Car has since been fully restored with its era-correct Jimmy six-cylinder engine.

In 2009, I lost my job as a sea-captain and after a year of watching company after company tying up their fleets, I knew it was time for a career change. Entering college at 57 years old was not exactly what I had in mind for my golden years, however, that was about the only option left. I figured if I could get a degree on top of my master’s license, then maybe, I could get back on top before I was ready to retire.
//
After graduating college last year, my life took another unforeseen change as my family situation placed me as primary caregiver for my home bound elderly mother. Her care became my job, so looking for some avenue to have a social life, I signed up to volunteer with Senior Corps’ Retired Seniors Volunteer Program. The first thing I was asked to do was attend a training class with the local Homeland Preparedness Medical Reserve Corp. During that training, I was taught to think about preparedness for disasters. I came away from the class with the knowledge that I was in the dark when it came to being prepared for a disaster.
Living here on the southeast Gulf Coast of Texas, I have experienced numerous hurricanes. As a sea-captain, I have been involved with the evacuation of offshore platforms. I have experienced firsthand smaller hurricanes and the havoc they can cause. The tidal surge, winds, and tornadoes that accompany them can be very destructive. Lowland flooding, downed power lines, and trees will take the most time to recover from. But it is way of life in this area and something every person living here should be prepared for.
However, I was not trained to deal with the enormity of a large, wide spread natural disaster like the floods that came through here the year before, or what damage a cat 5 hurricane might do. I was lost when it came to understanding all the many different types of disasters that are all around me, all the time. We can prep for a hurricane, but most other events happen so suddenly, if we are not prepared ahead of time, we could be like the people of New Orleans after Katrina or the Galveston area after Ike.
My training while working in the offshore mineral and oil industry and around the local chemical docks taught me safety measures with regards to the dangers involved. The local port dock’s chemical tankers transporting numerous volatile cargoes. That, along with the plants that produce and use them, are another of the local disaster scenarios that one must always consider. These are things we discussed at the Homeland Preparedness class. That class also introduced me to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).
A man-made or natural disaster is not all a prepper should be prepared for. A car accident right in front you miles from nowhere or a hunting accident or even someone dropping down having a heart attack. As a prepper, these are all emergencies that could be part of the world when the SHTF. That is what I have learned and have become energized about from my CERT preparedness and training classes.
Tumblr media
But something else that is great about CERT training, it is a FREE government training program that got me on my way to being better prepared to finding the answers to many of the questions I was beginning to have. A FEMA program that is in every community around the country. FEMA also offers many free online courses as well. Almost any disaster I can think of is covered as well as more advanced courses. Several of the courses are a requirement before entering the CERT class, but they not difficult and they will prepare you for what is to come.
The classroom training covers a lot of materials and each cert member receives their own Emergency Response Bag filled with all the equipment needed to respond to an emergency or disaster. As a CERT member, you are a volunteer responder, there to assist the professional first responders. At the end of the classroom training there is a practice drill so each team member will get a feel for working as part of a team, as well as assessing a disaster consisting of varying degrees of injured people.
Since completion of the CERT training, I have been actively researching to become further informed and prepared. I have spent countless hours reading articles and watching videos on when the SHTF. I am amazed that there are as many ways to prepare as there are people out there sharing their knowledge about it. But the bottom-line I have drawn from all my training from the Merchant Marines to CERT to having been through flooding and hurricanes is that I must look at what are the possible scenarios that will occur where I am now and prepare for those events.
Tumblr media
Experience from Ike taught me that electricity could be out for as much as two weeks or more. The National Guard were here within three days and rations then became available. From that, I learned that a minimum of three to five days supply of water and nonperishable foods on hand is essential. My hot water heater has a twenty gallon tank that I drain every spring to make sure the water is clean, just in case. It uses natural gas as does my stove. City water supply is gravity feed from a tower and if it were to run dry, there is the hot water heater. And I have a portable generator that will run the refrigerator and a couple of fans. I buy and store enough gasoline early in hurricane season to supply the generator for several days.
Of course, there are many other forms of disasters which could be much more devastating like a nuke or plant explosion or EMP. These are events that I must trust that my faith, commonsense, and willpower will be there to help me to prevail. Those are my primary resources, which I expect will give me the resolve to deal with such an incident as one of those. Having taken the CERT training educated me enough to think more clearly about prepping and protecting my love ones.

Freshman Phenoms Fuel Sun Devil Squads
It’s hard to top the kind of start Sun Devil wrestler Zahid Valencia has had.
Consider that, as of January 25, Valencia has fashioned a match record of 27-0, with eight major decisions (tops in the Pac-12), eight pins (second in the Pac-12) and three technical falls (third in the Pac-12). The native of Bellflower, California is tied for the number one ranking at 174 lbs. in the first coaches’ panel rankings of the season, released on Jan. 20, used ultimately to determine seeing at the NCAA championships.
So how does Valencia’s freshman season compare to the freshman seasons of some of ASU’s most accomplished student-athletes? Let’s take a look (keeping in mind the NCAA declared freshman eligible in all sports beginning in 1972).
James Harden averaged 17.8 points per game in 2007-08, while leading the Pac-10 in steals. He was named First-Team All-Pac-10, and, not surprisingly, named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team. The Devils advanced to the third round of the NIT in Harden’s first season.
Eddie House and Ike Diogu both earned Pac-10 All-Freshman honors, with Diogu being named 2003 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
Phil Mickelson’s freshman year with the ASU men’s golf team resulted in the first of his three individual NCAA Championships, as well as a first-team Ping All-America selection (Mickelson earned the honor each of his four years at ASU). His opening round at the NCAA’s was eye-popping. Playing at the Oaktree Country Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, Mickelson tamed the Pete Dye-designed course with a nine-under par 63. He finished the four rounds at 17-under 271.
Six different ASU women’s golfers were named all-America as freshman – Brandie Burton (1980), Emilee Klein (1993), Heather Bowie (1994), Kellee Booth (1995), Grace Park (1998) and Carlota Ciganda (2009).
Pitcher Dallas Escobedo led Arizona State softball to a National Championship in her freshman season. Her 37 wins were the second most in a single season in school history, while recording the fourth-most strikeouts in a season with 326. Her list of accolades included Women’s College World Series co-Most Outstanding Player, WCWS All-Tournament, First-Team All-America, NFCA All-Region, USA Softball Collegiate Pitcher of the Week, two-time Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, First-Team All-Pac-10, Pac-10 All-Freshman and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year.
Krista Donneworth also was named Third-team All-America as a freshman in 2008 after hitting .354 with 15 home runs.
Barry Bonds was one of the most heralded freshman in the long history of Sun Devil Baseball, and his first year validated the attention. Bonds hit .306 for the year, with an OPS (on base plus slugging percentage) of .963. His 11 home runs, 16 stolen bases and 60 runs scored all set ASU freshman records. His 11th inning home run propelled ASU to a late-season win at UCLA, sparking the Devils to a run that took them to a 3rd place finish at the College World Series in Omaha. Bonds was named to the All-CWS team that year.
On the mound, Kendall Carter’s freshman season set plenty of records. Carter won 19 games, mostly in relief, and earned First-Team All-America status as the Devils won the 1981 National Championship.
Dustin Pedroia made an immediate impact as a shortstop at ASU, hitting a solid .347 as a freshman, earning all-Pac-10 and Freshman All-America honors while setting the ASU freshman record with 82 hits. He also hit .398 with runners in scoring position.
Kicker Zane Gonzalez’s freshman season was a prime reason the Sun Devils won the 2013 Pac-12 South Division title. In earning All-Pac-12 honors, Gonzalez led the conference in kick scoring, converting 25 of 30 field goal attempts (83.3%). He had a streak of 18 consecutive made field goals, tying the NCAA record for field goals made by a freshman in the process. His 1.7 field goals per game led the Pac-12, and he was nominated for the Lou Groza Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate placekicker (an award he won this year as a senior).
Tight End Zach Miller became the second Sun Devil to be named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year (the other being Terrell Suggs two years earlier) in 2004. Miller set ASU freshman receiving records with 56 catches for 552 yards. He earned Freshman All-America honors as well, leading ASU to a 9-3 record and a Sun Bowl win over Purdue.
During ASU’s 1977 National Championship Track and Field season, two freshmen, Tony Darden and Dannie Jackson earned First-Team All-America honors. Darden finished second in the 200 meters at the NCAA’s while Jackson placed fourth in the long jump. Dominique Malloy was named a First-Team All-American in 2008, as part of the third-place 4 X 400 relay team at the NCAA Women’s Indoor Championship.
In wrestling, Valencia is looking to match Marcus Mollica, who won the NCAA Championship competing at 158 pounds in 1993 as a freshman. Mollica also earned all-Pac-10 and First-Team All-American honors that year, and each of his four years with the Sun Devils.
Oh, and in case Zahid wants to compare notes with his head coach, Zeke Jones won the Pac-10 Championship in 1987 as a freshman competing at 118 pounds.
Now, let’s turn the tables – here’s some of the most famous names in Sun Devil Athletics who DIDN’T earn national or conference accolades as freshmen.
Jake Plummer – Started nine games for ASU in 1993, completed 51.3 % of his passes for 1,650 yards and nine touchdowns. By his senior year, Plummer was the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year, and led the Devils into the 1997 Rose Bowl.
Pat Tillman – While eventually earning Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year honors in 1997, and eventually having the award named for him, Tillman recorded 10 tackles in 1994. His first collegiate play from scrimmage? A sack of California quarterback Dave Barr.
Lafayette Lever – The point guard for two ASU NCAA Tournament teams (1980, 81), Lever posted a 3.6 point, 1.8 assist average in 29 games in 1978-79. “Fat” would go on to lead the Devils in assists and steals each of the next three seasons, and in 2004 was voted into the Pac-10 Hall of Honor.
Alvin Davis – The sweet-swinging first baseman on ASU’s 1981 National Championship came off the bench as a freshman in 1979, playing behind Mike Ancich.
Christy Nore - While her name can be found in several categories in Sun Devil Volleyball’s career statistics lists, Nore did not earn national or conference honors in 1985.
What this should prove are two things – Arizona State has a long history of successful freshman student-athletes, and Zahid Valencia’s season is already among the best with two home matches remaining, including this Sunday against nationally-ranked Illinois. Then there’s the Pac-12 Championships in Palo Alto and the NCAA Championships in St. Louis. Considering the challenges freshmen face adjusting to life at a major university, and the time demands academically and athletically, Valencia has proven worthy of everything he has accomplished.
