On my beat, they started telling me: “We really want you to start policing this section of Boulevard and Ponce de Leon Avenue, basically the Bedford Pines Apartments. We think there are dope boys in there. We think there’s a lot of illegal activity happening and we want to really focus there. So we’re gonna put up signs that say you can’t park on the street. I want you to go and write tickets on every single car that’s on the street and I want you to get those cars out of there; if they don’t move, tow ’em. I want you to start running checks on everybody standing on the street; if they have got warrants, I want you to lock ’em up.”

It became this very aggressive policing strategy in the Bedford Pines. Which was strange. Because it was extremely rare for them to tell you to do anything. It’s unusual for them to give you very specific directions, and then for them to be very serious about it and follow up—I’d have supervisors show up and say, “Hey I drove by, there were some cars parked out there, did you ticket them?”

It made me very curious. So on my own time—I live in Atlanta, I live in the zone I policed, which is super rare—I drove over there and had a conversation with some people. I was like: “Hey, this is what I’m being asked to do. Why do you think that is? What’s going on?”

A homeowner in the area was very frank with me. He said the guys who own Bedford Pines got their tax bill last year, and their taxes were assessed based on all the gentrification that’s happening in the area. And so they wanted to move everybody out of these apartments and knock ’em down and rebuild these nice expensive apartments and the government said no. And so then they said, “Well, that’s ok, we’ll just increase the rent.” They tried to increase the rent and the Section 8 guys came back out and said, “No, you can’t do that either.”

The only way you can evict or do anything like that is if the person who owns the apartment is convicted of a felony. So the Bedford Pines guys just went to the police department and said: “We want you to police in here, and we’re going to give you a section of Bedford Pines to actually have office space. And I want you to lock up as many people as possible so we can make these apartments vacant and we can knock ’em down.”

Missing Ship 'Atlanta' Found in Lake Superior after 130 Years

Once thought to be lost forever, the 130-year-old wreckage of the ship Atlanta has finally been discovered at the bottom of Lake Superior.

Located 35 miles off Deer Park, Michigan, the "wonderfully preserved shipwreck," lies in the murky depths 650 feet below the lake's surface, according to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS), which announced its discovery Thursday.

The GLSHS found the 172-foot schooner barge after using sonar in partnership with Marine Sonic Technology to map more than 2,500 miles of Lake Superior in the summer of 2021.

Time for research to give the wreck context accounts for the delay in announcing Atlanta's discovery, according to Corey Adkins, the communications and content director of GLSHS.

Carrying a load of coal, the Atlanta sank during a storm on May 4, 1891, while being towed by the steamer Wilhelm.

Caught in a northwest gale, not only did the towline snap, but so did Atlanta's sails, which left it at the mercy of the storm.

The seven-member crew loaded into a lifeboat and paddled for hours until arriving at the Crisp Point Life-Saving Station. While attempting to land the boat near the station, it overturned and only two members made it safely to shore.

Adkins said the detailed accounts of the wreck come from survivors' testimony recorded by the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The organization eventually became the U.S. Coast Guard.

Preserved in the cold

Images of the shipwreck taken by an ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) show the remains of a wheel, toilets and broken masts.

According to Bruce Lynn, the executive director of the GLSHS, shipwrecks that can be clearly identified after this long are rare. The wreck is especially well-preserved thanks to the frigid waters of Lake Superior.

"It is truly ornate, and still beautiful after 130 years on the bottom of Lake Superior," Lynn said in a statement.

The survivors said all three masts broke off during the storm, according to GLSHS, and images of the shipwreck support those claims.

The Atlanta's name-board, however, remains intact and visible. The origin of the vessel's name, which matches that of Georgia's state capital hundreds of miles away, remains unclear.

While Adkins said the museum plans to make an exhibit about Atlanta, he explained that it's illegal to salvage anything from the wreck unless you have a special permit.

"That wreck is so deep compared to others we've found, we would like to leave this one undisturbed."

Divers would be hard-pressed to try reaching the depths of the wreck, and the GLSHS is not disclosing its exact location at this time.

Three years in, I had basically arrived—I had been transferred to the day shift. It was the premier shift. You wanted to get the day shift because those are the best hours, good days off.

I go to my supervisors: Is this what the case is? And they looked at me like, what are you, stupid? Of course, why else would we be doing this?

I’m not a constitutional lawyer—that’s not my bag. I’m not even a political activist. But something about that smacks of institutional racism, right? I mean, there wasn’t a white person in this whole complex. Most of the renters were single Black girls who are just trying to, you know, make their way in the world. And yes, their boyfriends probably were dope boys and were up to no good or whatever, but they’d been doing the same thing forever, and they would continue to do the same thing forever. I don’t know what the problem was except that now there’s a multi-million-dollar skyrise next door to them.

There was something about that that made me think now, when I clock into work, I’m not doing any good. I’m actually doing harm.

It wasn’t long before the riots started, but I started making noise right then. I was already pretty vocal about the fact that I wouldn’t lock people up for minor drug stuff. I didn’t feel great about ruining someone’s life over a dime bag of weed or whatever, so I just started trying to find a way to exit stage right.

It dawned on me that the entire system, the entire thing, was just a shitty mafia system. If you tried to do a good job and say, “I’m going to be a good cop, and I’m going to obey commands,” they would abandon you, charge you, leave you behind, and not even think twice. If you didn’t obey the rules, then they were gonna charge you for that. And if you tried to remain quiet and do your job, you are going to be a piece of modern-day redlining that way, too. There was no way that I could exist and feel good about it. And because I didn’t have to—and that’s the privilege part—I just decided not to.

When I told the department I was quitting, they said, “Good for you. If I could quit, I would quit.” My supervisor literally said: “Can we get together after work and you tell me what else I can do? I don’t know what else to do and I cannot stomach being here.”

Editor’s note: After talking with Mother Jones, Gissler relocated from Atlanta following what he believes to have been retaliation for quitting. He explained the situation in a subsequent message:

A report was made to the Division of Family and Children’s Services alleging abuse in my household. Also an allegation of animal abuse was made. Both allegations are very serious for anyone, but especially as law enforcement, because you cannot operate while under investigation. The presumption is that whoever filed the report assumed I was going to stay in law enforcement and the effect would be terror and hardship. DFACS was very cooperative and was able to see immediately that the allegations were unfounded and complained about the wasted resources. It was a shot across the bow meant to communicate that I shouldn’t be “noisy” while exiting.

My wife was especially blindsided by the ordeal and was truly terrified. Our leaving was necessary simply to insulate ourselves from such hijinks by distancing ourselves geographically. Currently, APD is filing random charges and administrative punishments around the department to discourage the hemorrhages in staffing. It has worked and people are quieting and hiding. It effectively stops officers from transferring or retiring if they are under investigation. Fortunately for me there is little they can do outside of this sort of thing or something very dumb like attempt to physically harm me, which would be harder now. That’s too dramatic to even consider.

Good cops get weeded out. They quit, or they get fired, or they get threatened or coerced or re-educated.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The 22-year-old Florida Institute of Technology student pilot suspected of jumping a fence at Orlando Melbourne International Airport and boarding a vacant American Airlines plane has been charged with a criminal attempt to steal an airplane.

Authorities also booked the unnamed man for a visa violation and criminal trespassing.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force continues investigating the early morning incident Thursday, which happened near an aircraft hangar.

The man – who left his car running in front of the passenger terminal – entered the plane about 2 a.m. ET, authorities reported.

“Our employee was in the aircraft and immediately questioned him, immediately escorted him out of the airplane, and was taking him over to our main hangar facility to call the police and to deal with it. And the individual took off running,” said STS Aviation Group President Mark Smith.

“The original employee plus our shift manager jumped in one of our golf carts and impeded his process from getting back to the airplane – he was heading back to the airplane,” Smith said.

Lori Booker, spokeswoman for the airport, said the Melbourne Airport Police Department responded within two minutes.

The suspect is a part-time Florida Tech student from Trinidad and Tobago who is studying aviation management, and he has completed some flight training, said Adam Lowenstein, a university spokesman.

Technician ‘saw a shadow’

President Donald Trump held rallies inside the aircraft hangar in September 2016 and February 2017. STS Aviation Group bought the facility in June 2017, then opened for business last October, Smith said.

The Airbus – large enough to hold up to 200 passengers – was out of service and blocked in by aircraft chocks to prevent movement, airport officials reported.

Authorities said the avionics technician working in the galley of the plane saw a shadow.

“He turned around and said, ‘Who are you? Show me your badge,’ ” Booker said.

The unnamed technician, one of four people dubbed as heroes, grabbed the man and with help from another technician, led the man off the plane.

Booker said one of the men held the student to the ground while the other made a call to Melbourne Airport Police. The student pilot then broke free and ran along the airfield before he was taken into custody by two police officers.

A car was towed by Lee’s Towing with Melbourne CSI vans in front of and behind it at about 7:15 a.m. ET. A robot used by police searched the vehicle before it was removed from the airport.

How it all began

The incident unfolded with Melbourne police tweeting early Thursday that Orlando Melbourne International Airport was temporarily closed because of “police activity.”

Melbourne resident Manan Karia approached the airport about 5 a.m. on NASA Boulevard to try to catch a 6 a.m. Delta flight to Atlanta en route to Austin, Texas.

“I drove by Keiser (University) and Sears and saw a bunch of cars in both parking lots, which I thought was weird,” she said. “I get to the airport and there is a line about five cars deep, and a police officer has the entrance blocked with his car, and lights are flashing. You could see more police cars with lights flashing around the airport.

“I finally get up to the officer – and he proceeds to tell me the airport is shut down and asks if I’m an employee or a passenger. I let him know I’m a passenger, and he tells me to go park at the Keiser parking lot. That’s all the info they provided,” Karia said.

“I was just scouring Twitter and the internet trying to get more after that.”

Karia and a group of fellow passengers drove from the Keiser University parking lot shortly after 7 a.m., then entered the airport.

“It was the longest security line I can remember seeing in Melbourne,” Karia said.

In the spotlight

Thursday’s security breach was thwarted quickly, unlike some recent incidents that drew national attention.

Last month at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, an apparently suicidal Horizon Air luggage handler entered the cockpit of an unoccupied Bombardier Q400 turboprop, took off and flew for an hour before crashing into Ketron Island.

Booker said security training helped prepare the officers and the staff for their response to the breach.

Greg Donovan, the executive director of the airport, talked to the maintenance workers who confronted the man.

“I want you to know how very grateful we are for your heroic actions and quick thinking,” Donovan told the men, according to Booker.
