Headcanon Time! (+Spoilers)
Get ready for some Watcher and Aloth headcanons nobody asked for! <3
Context: Watcher is a female Moon Godlike Spiritualist (Cipher+Chanter) from Old Vailia, with elven heritage.
- Laura was born with cipher talents, but since she had nobody to train with in Old Vailia, she actually plays through the intro to the first POE game without properly fighting; Morwen, her past life, was a cipher+paladin, so I headcanon that her cipher abilities are a result of her Awakening + Watcher abilities;
- Dying once also gets her even closer to the world of spirits, hence she multiclasses into chanter in Deadfire; she has a soft, beautiful voice, that Aloth actually likes listening to. Tekehu makes note how Aloth always complains about his chanting, but seems to enjoy hers instead, to which the wizard responds by blushing and diverting the question. Nobody mentions this again.
- Laura renames her first boat into Dunryd Rowboat, the second into Caed Shippa; the Steward is not amusedTM;
- Is actually a gOOD mother to Vela whom she adores, wtf is up with that ale shit Obsidian - Laura would probably kill anyone who would harm or badly influence her little girl. Cut that kidnapping shit, Eder.
- She is extremely motherly due to the fact that she didn’t have a mother figure around as she was growing up; her brother didn’t always recall her in the best of terms, since his own recent memories of her were unpleasant.
- Laura in particular becomes extremely pissed off with Ondra when she expresses her love and interest in Tekehu’s wellbeing, especially since she never acknowledges the fact that she too is supposed to be her daughter. Laura calls herself ‘Ondra’s bastardo’ because she was the unwanted child, which makes Tekehu feel... unusual.
- Still, when Laura sees Ondra’s Ngati form as a giant fish with two pairs of saggy tits, she’s actually glad to not be recognized as a child of that thing.
- Laura painted everyone’s in-game portraits, as well as the illustrations in the game - her way of making sense of things and remembering aspects she could forget later on. She constantly fears for her sanity.
- Had Laura not been born a Godlike, she’d have her mother’s auburn-red hair and green-yellow eyes, soft freckles sprinkled on her cheeks (replaced by stars and a night-sky skin)
- She’s extremely passionate and a romantic to a fault. She began developing romantic feelings for Aloth early on, somewhat acting on them when she grabbed Aloth’s hands in the Sanitarium to comfort him. But since she was fearing her life and sanity, feeling bits of her fade away, day by day, she ignored her feelings, knowing for certain that romantic involvement must be the last thing Aloth wants and needs.
- Yet dying makes her reconsider her position. Since she finds Aloth so soon after ‘coming back to life’, she tells herself she no longer wants to delay and has to confess how she feels about him and how SAD SHE IS HE NEVER WROTE HER A LETTER *cough* before she could die again.
- Aloth himself has become attached to Laura during the events of the first game, but, partly because of her appearance, and partly because of her abilities, he found her distant and unattainable, just like the moon in the sky. Iselmyr laughs at his metaphor - that she was the night light that guided him out of the darkest years of his life. She especially laughs at Aloth’s insistence that his feelings aren’t romantic, when they clearly are. He just doesn’t know what to do about them.
- When he visits his mother, she correctly guesses his affections for this ‘mysterious Watcher you clearly long for’. She encourages him to take the time to work through his feelings, to go fulfill his mystery quest, and once he’s finished and ready, to find this Watcher and see if the feelings are still there. ‘If they are, then know, son, that is love.’
- He goes to Old Vailia because of Laura’s recollections of her homeland. It doesn’t really mean anything if the Watcher is from any other place, but for me, it was a pleasant surprise that turned into a heart-warming headcanon. It also links with his crush on Benessa - he enjoys the Vailian accent now, and misses Laura’s way of speech, which is why he goes to Old Vailia, and then grows close to the Vailian animancers from Port Maje.
- Laura’s confession startles him, because he didn’t expect for her to feel the same way. However, he’s afraid of these feelings and their implications. She just died and came back, at Berath’s behest. Is she still the same? Does she still care for the people, is she still as humble as before or did 5 years of ruling go to her head? Is she here to do the bidding of the Gods or is she still against their tyrannical rule and manipulation of kith? Does she truly care for him?
- But as time passes, he realizes that he was wrong - she’s better than 5 years ago. In fact, she’s warmer. He guesses that having one’s mind intact does that to a person, not to mention being able to sleep at night. She seems forgetful, due to her missing soul. She doesn’t seem to remember Morwen or her life before Dyrwood very well.
- On long journeys, they go back into their old routine; she invites him in her cabin, where it smells of wood, dried flowers and leaves, paints and her. She carries a distinct smell, Aloth notices, that embeds itself in her cabin, like Berath’s Bell in a fresh sea breeze. There, he works on his spells as she paints.
- He’s always by her side when she has visions or her soul is pulled into the Gods’ realm, sometimes gently cradling her head or helping her up.
- He find himself staring at her sometimes. Seeing her skin uncovered especially dazes him when they first visit the bathhouse. He takes his grimoire along mostly to cover his blushing face, as he sometimes peeks when he thinks others aren’t looking, drawn to her lithe form and intricate designs that adorn her sky-blue body. He realizes that his feelings are stronger than he initially thought.
- At the Wild Mare, when they find Ymir, she’s amused by Aloth’s aloofness towards romantic advances, and wonders, for the first time, really, if he’s ever been with anyone before.
- During the 5 years in-between games, Laura has been proposed a couple of times; once, by a lord to truly fell in love with her (or her image, as she insists), and another wished for a political alliance. Yet, despite the many advances she received, Laura never involved herself with anyone, hoping, deep in her heart, that Aloth would return to Caed Nua - one day.
- In the bedroom, Laura is usually submissive, nudging Aloth to take control, which switches their roles from their usual circumstances. She enjoys the glint of satisfaction he gets when she molds herself after his desires. She’s also a people-pleaser, and since she has plenty of sexual experience, she tries her best to give Aloth exactly what he needs, desperate in a way to keep him near and not drive him away if she’s too insistent.
