hello there! lore question, how did william treat his kids and wife in your opinion?

if there’s one thing that william loves, it’s his children. more than anything else. his sweet but stubborn little boy and his perfect little girl. what would he do without them? no one else matters.

his love is… unusual, though. he’s very possessive over the two of them- an odd, artificial mix of being a very lax father and a very controlling one. michael has to be his little boy, no matter how much he protests, no matter how much he wants william to leave him alone- william refuses. he wants to spoil his children so dearly, but they have to reciprocate the affection in order to be so. luckily, lizzy loves her daddy more than anything in the world, so she’s the one that gets spoiled the most.

this doesn’t mean he’s the perfectly behaved father with them. he has a temperament issue influenced by a lot of things that results in borderline yelling fights between him and michael. they’re not common when he’s younger, but as michael becomes the spiteful teenager he’s meant to be, they get much more common. but both of them seem to agree to not let it get to that level while lizzy is around.

but william would do anything for his children. his current wife, carol? not so much.

they got married because of carol’s desires, and her pregnancy. william tried for the first couple of years, he really did. but it wasn’t going to work. while they both were amazing at pretending to be a perfect couple outside of the home, inside it was a wreck. they both realised they were never going to love each other, so why bother? their appearance was all that mattered. not only that, but they’re stuck in a stalemate- a divorce meant carol would lose william’s money, and william would lose his children.

so they fight. they get into heated arguments over the littlest of things, suffocated by each other. it doesn’t help that carol suspects william’s second nature, his relationship with the kids’ babysitter who seems too much of a ‘pretty’ boy to be an employee. she hates it, not because it means william doesn’t love her, but because if he got caught their image would be ruined. that also leads to fights. unlike with michael, they don’t seem to notice if lizzy is around- michael has to step in and take her out of the situation as quickly as possible.

what matters is how they look on the outside, after all.
