"Now I know what you're all thinking," the professor is saying as Leia looks up. "A chemistry lab can be a very scary experience. But don't worry—I'll walk with you through it."

Leia eyes him distastefully, trying not to let her lip curl too much. She's in the back of the room, thank god, which means she can glare at him as much as he likes, but it seems like a bad idea to give all the people sitting around her the idea that she's a bitch.

"I took this job because—" he says, and Leia tunes out again and pulls up Luke's number.

I Am Going To Kill This Man, she writes.

please don't. Luke texts back a few seconds later. who?

"The boxes on the worksheet aren’t so small because we’re trying to make it hard for you to answer," he says as she looks up, totally dashing her hopes of him finally having gotten to anything useful, "we’re just trying to teach you how to be concise in your answers."

When she looks back down at her phone again, Luke has sent i liked him :( :(, and Leia sighs and writes back he's making excuses for not knowing how to edit a word doc.

She gets back a ... :(, and scoffs, looking back up—and right into the eyes of the professor, who has somehow spotted her texting from forty meters away.

"Now," he says, eyes still on her, "I had hoped it wouldn't have to come to this, but I think we need to discuss our phone policy. Far be it from me to take draconian measures, but as you are paying for this class, it would be a shame to waste your time on your phone during lectures. I hope you understand how disrespectful texting can be both to your fellow classmates, and to me, your instructor. From now on, if I see your phone out, I will have to ask you to either put it away or leave the room."

I hope someone shoves you off a bridge, Leia thinks, putting her phone away, and watches as Professor Jinn gives her one last look—the first intelligent expression he's had all evening—and continues on to describing the importance of intro-level labs in preparing the young minds of today for the workforce.
