#jeeves and the tie that binds

It's not as dramatic as saving Bertie's life, but I think this is a really sweet gesture from Jeeves in Much Obliged Jeeves/Jeeves and the Tie That Binds. Bertie is stressed out and wants to go somewhere quiet and familiar to calm down and get some distance, so Jeeves offers to pretend to have made a careless mistake so Bertie can do that without hurting Aunt Dahlia's feelings.
He didn't NEED to do this. It wasn't part of his grand plan. The Jeeves in My Man Jeeves wouldn't have done this. It's up there with impersonating Bertie on the phone to spare him an unpleasant conversation (Jeeves and the Feudal Spirit) for demonstrating character growth.

Some quotes from "Much Obliged, Jeeves" that i adore:
«[...]but whereas I sang a good deal as we buzzed along, he [Jeeves] maintained, as is his custom, the silent reserve of a stuffed frog, never joining in the chorus, though cordially invited to.»
«'I'm sorry to say I do,' said Spode, speaking like Sherlock Holmes asked if he knew Professor Moriarty.» «Mingled with the ecstasy which the sight of him aroused in my bosom was a certain surprise that he should be acting as cup-bearer.»
(more under the cut)
«'Euphoria.' 'I what?' 'That's what it's called, Jeeves tells me, feeling like that.' 'Oh, I see. I just call it being happy, happy, happy.'»
«Bertie, are you going straight now?' 'I beg your pardon?'»
«Pardon me, your tie.' 'What's wrong with it?' 'Everything, sir. If you will allow me.' 'All right, go ahead. But I can't help asking myself if ties really matter at a time like this.' There is no time when ties do not matter, sir.'»
«Especially as a few moments before this person appeared I had been interrupted by an extraordinary young man who gave me the impression of being half-witted.' 'That would have been my nephew, Bertram Wooster.' «Oh, I beg your pardon.' 'Quite all right.'»
«How about Jeeves?' 'What about him?' '[...] up till now Jeeves has always been right. His agony on finding that he has at last made a floater will be frightful. I shouldn't wonder if he might not swoon. I can't face him. You'll have to tell him.' 'Yes, I'll do it.' 'Try to break it gently.' 'I will.»
«He would have risen at my approach, but I begged him to remain seated, for I knew that Augustus, like L. P. Runkle, resented being woken suddenly, and one always wants to consider a cat's feelings.»
«No joke for a girl who thinks she's going to be the Countess of Sidcup to have the fellow say «April fool, my little chickadee. What you're going to be is Mrs Spode.»
«'Had bad news, has she?' 'No, sir, she was struck by a turnip.'»
«Her greeting could not have been more cordial. An aunt's love oozed out from every syllable. 'Hullo, you revolting object,' she said. 'So you're back.'»
«Getting hit in the eye with that potato changed his plans completely.»
Ngl, i had a few more cat-related quotes, but this post is already big enough sooo yea

i think about this part of Joy In The Morning all the time. As far as Jeeves knows, Bertie was just randomly in that garden in the middle of the night, no wonder he tried to flirt. I'd be FUMING if I got told to 'switch it off' when im dropping the most romantic shakespeare i can think of
jeeves had really no reason to begin quoting verse- he didn't even pry to hard into bertie's excuse for being out. in fairness they were already on holiday together because "my valet wanted to go fishing" is bertie's sole reasoning for the entire book, so i suppose jeeves decided to be fair and woo him as well. what a gentleman
feat. my written comments as i read the book lmao

"Jeeves," I said. "Sir?" he responded. "Sorry to interrupt you again. Were you reading Spinoza?" "No, sir, I was writing a letter to my Uncle Charlie." "Charlie Silversmith," I explained in an aside to the ancestor. "Butler at Deverill Hall. One of the best." "Thank you, sir." "I know few men whom I esteem more highly than your Uncle Charlie." ... "Then you may leave us, Jeeves. Much obliged for your Daniel come to judgmenting." "A pleasure, sir." "Give Uncle Charlie my love." "I will indeed, sir."

Once upon a time, I thought I was gonna write a Dieter story called You & Tequila but it currently feels a little above my skill set....anyways, here's a little outtake from it....happy Sunday y'all 💕
"Mr. Bravo Senior..."
"Wait- there's two of them?" You point across the table at your estranged husband, who despite asking you to be here, looks as if he'd rather be anywhere else on Earth.
"Pardon, ma'am?"
"You said Mr. Bravo Senior, implying there's two Dieters?"
''Ah, yes," the lawyer adjusts his wire rimmed glasses and the already perfect knot in his tie. "Misters Dieter Bravo Senior and Junior. The Junior being your spouse."
"Lord help us all," you mutter to yourself, learning back in your chair and crossing your arms.
"As I was saying, ma'am, Mr. Bravo would like to offer you a deal of sorts. If you agree not to file for divorce from his son at this time, he will cover all financial necessities and situations related to the running of your aunt's establishment."
"So it's a bribe?"
"It would be a legally binding arrangement."
"But still a bribe?"
"It would include free room and board in perpetuity at the accommodations above the business which, I believe, is where you currently reside."
"Just say it's a fucking bribe, Jeeves, and I'll sign your damn papers"

I've known the jeeves & wooster books existed for years now and always intended to read them, but never thought that there would be something gay in them. but now that I've seen that jeeves is played by stephen fry in the show theres just no other way. jeeves and wooster are gay even tho I know nothing about their relationship, they're gay
The books are literally the narrator (bertie wooster) going “oh no I accidentally got engaged to another woman! How I hope jeeves (he’s my beautiful, genius, handsome employee who I treasure above any human in the world) gets me out of this engagement” and then jeeves does a bunch of things in the background to end Bertie’s engagement and also ensure they go on a fun trip together that bertie didn’t really want to go on at the beginning of the story.
The entire series ends with the two of them waxing poetic about how there’s a tie that binds them and how they’ll be together forever. So yeah it’s pretty….out there…

Am I supposed to take it that by burning the club book pages, Jeeves is effectively forfeiting his membership in the Junior Ganymede? I mean, even if they never find out about the multiple times he’s used it for blackmail, and even if he manages to convince them that the pages were destroyed by accident or by Bingley or something, he presumably won’t be writing any NEW pages. He can’t very well explain to his club “no, see, my employer and I are married now, so his exploits are none of your business anymore.” He said himself, club rules are very strict
Plus another thing: I know it’s pretty much established by now that Bertie never wants to marry, but this basically formalizes it, doesn’t it? Jeeves doesn’t work for married men and Bertie’s fiancées tend to want him to get rid of Jeeves, so by telling Jeeves that he can stay permanently (permanently!) in his service, Bertie is essentially promising to remain unmarried forever
Look at them forsaking all others in order to be together

tag 9 people you want to get to know better!
you're the sweetest, @givefangapuppy !
Three Ships of All Time:
Ed/Stede: I mean, no question. They haunt my every hour. I love their love with all my might, mind, and soul. Because of them I'm writing for the first time in decades. Overly verbose meta! Fic of dubious quality! I'm all in, baby!
Clark Kent/Lex Luthor (Smallville): I can't not. I still think of these boys on the regular. True story - I turned in some CLex fanfic I had written with the names swapped for aliases for my final project for my senior creative writing seminar in English, because my prof was the kind of jackass who had "poet" listed as his specialty on his office door but couldn't recognize haikus when I submitted them earlier in the class, and I was damned if I was going to waste my time on something new for him instead of focusing on my senior thesis in psychology. I got As on both ;). Also, my wife and I met by writing CLex fan fic together. We will have been 20 years in March.
Juno Steel/Peter Nureyev (Penumbra Podcast): Hardboiled enby space detective with crippling insecurities that they mask with hypercompetency and witty quips? and their complicated homme-fatale master thief sometimes-lover? This show seriously ticks all my boxes.
First Ever Ship:
The Baroness/Destruo (G.I. Joe): I'd say this was a tie with my Lady J/Duke/Flint/Scarlett love-quadrangle, but I honestly don't remember whether that was in the text of the show, or just the shows I'd stage for myself with my brother's action figures. What can I say? I started shipping young. My 3rd grade teacher commented on one of my writing assignments that I should write soap operas when I grew up.
Last Song:
Burning by Alcazar. Sometimes a girl just wants to dance alone in her living room.
Last Film:
Free Guy. Guilty pleasure. Comfort movie.
Currently Reading:
Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse. Guilty pleasure. Comfort author. Wodehouse is my brain candy, my absolute fav. author (yes, I know I said 'House of Leaves' by Danielewski is my fav. book. I'm complicated), and I rarely go more than a few months without a re-read. This isn't one of my all-time faves, but it's delightful nonetheless and it's been awhile since I read it last. Bertie retires to the peace of a simple country living at the urgings of his doctor after coming down with a minor rash, but still manages to get himself tangled up in crime due to the machinations of his Aunt Dahlia and accidentally engaged to a local stunner against his will. Jeeves/Wooster would have made it into my OTP list above except Jeeves would never permit himself the liberty. :(
(Except, hear me out - "Jeeves and the Tie that Binds" was the American release of "Much Obliged, Jeeves", and is identical except for the ending, in which Jeeves reveals that he destroyed the pages enumerating Bertie's peccadillos from the Junior Ganymede club book - FOR WHICH HE COULD BE BLACKBALLED FROM THE CLUB -, because he doesn't want anyone but him to ever be Bertie's gentleman's personal gentleman but him, because there is a "tie that binds" them. I mean to say, really!)
Currently Watching:
The Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. Look. I have a 10-year-old. He loved ladybugs as a toddler so we started watching the show together when he was wee based on the title alone. But it's actually SO GOOD. And the new season recently dropped on Disney +. I get to talk to my kid about how it's a metaphor for how bad actors in the world exploit feelings of fear and isolation to radicalize otherwise normal people to their destructive agendas? And how there's real heroics to be found in community organization and creative problem solving? And about issues of consent, both romantic and platonic?
But also I have OPINIONS and SHIPS, and I'm DYING to talk to someone who is NOT my child about how Nathalie just SLAMMED Gabriel face down on the kitchen counter and leaned over him to hiss in his ear about how he betrayed her and I am IN TO IT, but I will NOT go anywhere near the fandom because I don't need the drama of being in a kid-show fandom as a full-ass adult. Send help.
Currently Consuming:
Some cucumber/lemon-infused water.
Currently Craving:
I mean, other than another grown-ass person to indulge my not-kid-friendly thoughts about a superhero cartoon? Feeling pretty satiated, thanks!
Tagging:
If you're down for it, my v. dears - @nicnacsnonsense @tisziny @chocolatepot @the-orange-in-red-silk @wearfinethingsalltoowell @okayestokapi @asneakyfox @batsarebetterthanpeople @red-sky-in-mourning and anyone else who feels so inclined ;)

Much Obliged, Jeeves/The Tie That Binds is so gay like. Not that the other books aren’t gay. But it is such a sharp uptick in gayness right from the start like. I’m 33 pages in, and Jeeves and Bertie have already had a spat, Bertie has waxed lyrical about how beautiful Ginger is and how they’re like Damon and Pythias, and now Jeeves has saved Bertie’s life. The vibes are so ???????!?!?? And also I know what happens at the end so like it rly is just going to get gayer from here on I love it!!
