The Vinyl of the Day is ‘Malo’, the debut album by Malo, 1972. One of my favorite music genres was the big horn band sound that came out of the inner cities during the 70s, and this debut of Malo’s is one of my favorites. 

When Santana hit it big, there were many copiers, as the record labels tried to find the next big latino band. Malo was the best of the Santana wannabe's - even incorporating Carlos’s brother Jorge as guitarist. Other prominent members include Louis Gasca, would go on to a solo career in jazz fusion and Richard Kermode, a phenominal keyboardist who would join Santana during the Caravanserai days. Malo had a richer sound than Santana and featured more brass instruments. They put out very enjoyable and wide-ranging music, from Latin swing to rock, to a more mellow and romantic sound - however, overall their music was not as powerful and the songs were not as meaningful as Santana's. While I consider Santana's style more rock with a Latin influence, the Malo sound can be seen as the opposite - Latin rhythms with a rock influence. It's too bad Malo wasn't as big in the mainstream as Santana, because on this album they display a unique sound that is all their own. "Suavecito," the band's only Top 20 major hit, appears on here, making it the definitive Malo album. 

Malo's debut album sounds as exuberant today as it did over four decades ago, with blistering rock guitar, a big band horn section, and rad cover art. A primo example of one of the greatest eras of rock.

In 1954, Helguera painted Amor Indio, which is one of his most romantic images. Here the Aztec warrior is caught in the tender moment of gazing into the face of his beloved, who waits for his kiss with eyes closed. Helguera has added a dramatic sky behind them, a freshly killed meal on the ground, and a baby deer resting on the woman’s lap. This is the image that most non-Chicanos, nationally and internationally, are familiar with because of its wide distribution as the cover image of the 1972 debut album by San Francisco’s rock group, Malo. In the mid-1990s, it became available again with the reissue of Malo’s first record as a CD. The Helguera image was not only used on the cover, but a detail of it is printed on the CD itself. In fact, the image has become associated with Malo to the point that their publicity materials still feature the image. I would even argue that today most people, including some Chicanos think it is a Chicano, rather than Mexican image. This is an example of how Chicanos adopted a Helguera image without changing it, yet through its association with a Chicano product—in this case, Chicano music—it directly transferred the original commercial intent into a cultural reclamation project.

Malo's debut album remains their best and best-known work, primarily for the inclusion of the hit single "Suavecito." That track managed to make a Chicago-like pop-soul song sound hip with its smooth integration of Latin rhythms and irresistible "la la la" chorus. However, it represented just one facet of a band who, despite some expected similarities to Santana, played some of the most exciting and exuberant fusions of rock, soul, and Latin music. The six extended tracks (all clocking in at over six minutes apiece) leaned more heavily on hot Latin jazz brass than Santana did, though Jorge Santana himself generated plenty of friction with his burning electric guitar. It's not an exaggeration to state that by the time this came out in 1972, Malo's Latin rock blend sounded fresher than Santana's, if only because they sound hungrier and less formulaic than Santana did by that point. The Santana comparisons are unavoidable, though in this case it's to Malo's credit, as they too boasted a deft balance of improvisatory instrumental passages, solid multi-layered percussive rhythms, and emotional, romantic singing in both Spanish and English. The album has been reissued on CD as one of the discs in Rhino Handmade's Celebracion box set, with the addition of five bonus tracks, though those are merely edited single versions of songs on the LP.
