ok language proficiency h/cs bc I can

joranir/rouvastre: speaks standard ishgardian, mostly in a highborne register (but flavoured by a not-insignificant amount of informal standard; they weren’t born into a super high rank and his family were mostly house knights). born and raised inside ishgard’s walls so her lexic habits are extremely standard and unremarkable by ishgardian standards. speaks ishgardian, fluent eorzean by stb (y’shtola helped them with reading in arr), good dravanian, basic garlean (can have simple conversations), and truly godawful doman. only speaks eorzean for work, and speaking it everyday is affecting his accent and grammatical structures in ishgardian and it’s giving her a complex. has a bit of an accent (it’s thick as fuck in ARR) and like edmont can never remember to not drop H’s but alisaie has pranked her with ‘hey can you say happiness’ enough times that they’re aware of it. has never learned how to pronounce eorzean R properly and is never going to try. thancred asked them to say rural once and it make him cry

haurchefant: legitimately fluent in eorzean, and even his accent is near perfect (sometimes he makes little mistakes like dropping H’s, tho). he’s had a lot of practice (whether that be bc edmont shelled out for lessons or bc he speaks a ton with non-native travellers through dragonhead or both), and is the best eorzean speaker in his whole family. he’s just as animated a speaker in eorzean as he is in ishgardian. not as good at reading in eorzean as he is on speaking but he’s working on it. his register in ishgardian is pointedly more highborne adjacent and he rarely speaks like the rest of his soldiers.

aymeric: definitely somebody who’s experience with speaking eorzean is pretty technical and dry from a classroom setting and hasn’t had a ton of practice speaking it naturally, but he does a well enough job. his accent’s not as bad as early rouvastre’s but not as good as haurchefant’s, but he’s perfectly understandable aside from as few dropped letters and grammar mixups every now and again. definitely a very stiff, formal speaker who’s careful abt sounding out his words before then, and you get the sense he can’t quite express himself the way he intends or is able to say exactly what he wants to but he’s trying his best (this relaxes a bit after he gets more comfortable speaking naturally with the alliance). has actually managed to learn how to say an eorzean R but he find it very weird. register wise he speaks near exclusively in highborne and slips into old ishgardian for a lot of his speeches, but get him angry enough and he’ll drop the formality. has an even more impressive repertoire of curses than estinien but won’t admit to it.

estinien: very surprisingly, actually very good for a man who’s seemingly had no time to even consider anything other than being a dragoon. languages are kind of his Hidden Skill but I don’t know if he realizes that. regardless he’s stiff and gruff but that’s more bc he’s estinien and not bc he’s uncomfortable with speaking the language. same deal with his later appearances, he speaks better hingan and such than you’d expect. like rouvastre has never learned how say eorzean R right and is also never going to try. only speaks informal ishgardian, no matter the context.

edmont: 2nd best speaker after haurchefant. he still has a faint accent but is fluent and obviously comfortable speaking. never manages to remember to pronounce H’s though and always drops them. always speaks in a highborne register and that’s what he teaches the wol, alphinaud, and tataru.

artoirel: in the same boat as aymeric, except he has less practical experience so he mixes up grammar rules fairly regularly and his accent’s a touch thick. otherwise he’s trying his best. he’ll never understand eorzean prepositions no matter how many times you explain them to him.

emmanellain: this is a man who never paid any attention to his mandatory lessons and his vocabulary consists entirely of ‘hello’, ‘please’, ‘yes’, ‘no’, and a handful of swear words, and he’s not literate in eorzean either. honoroit however did and often has to speak for him, and he’s pretty okay at it. he makes good progress at it after he moves to dragonhead but it’s slow thing for him.

tataru: was somehow fluent in like two months, it’s terrifying. can even understand brume ishgardian bc she hangs around the forgotten knight near constantly and her register has a certain rough informality from it that’s unexpected, though she’s perfectly capable of speaking in the more formal register. may struggle with old ishgardian a bit but gets the general gist.

alphinaud: semi-fluent, can have extended conversations but can’t really talk abt anything too highly technical. he probably already speaks an elezen-family language from sharlayan so many of the sounds and root words came naturally to him. he’s like aymeric in that he’s careful abt his pronunciation and gets tripped up abt thinking abt his grammar rather than speaking naturally. trills his R’s instead of uvular rolling them and haurchefant/ysayle/estinien/rouvastre tease him gently for it. alisaie is competing with him for proficiency bc he can have better conversations with rouvastre in ishgardian than she can and she considers that inequality a complete travesty.

anyways both Haurchefant (bc boyfriend rights) and Ysayle (bc safe person / crush rights) knew abt the fake heretic situation and knew that Rouvastre’s identity as Joranir was bullshit long before it came out in full.

Other Ishgardians (esp. Edmont) suspected for a variety of reasons; they ‘learned’ Ishgardian really well weirdly fast, seemed to know more than he probably should abt various topics only really other Ishgardians would be familiar with, and just other little habitual tells that are fairly easy shibboleths to spot if you know what you’re looking for.

Thancred, Minfilia and possibly Y’shtola also suspected, but never got to investigate her in full before the Banquet and by the time Thancred rejoined the cat was already out of the bag.
