Tonight, I was browsing through @gallusrostromegalus' Family Lore tag having a great time, when I got a phone call to announce the birth of my baby cousin, my first ever female cousin (I have six of those), and it reminded me that I, too, have a Weird Family Story that some people might be entertained by. So, this is the story of
How my birth solved a 7 decades old mystery
First, the setting of our story's first part. Rural Picardy, France, 1940s. War has just stopped, the Germans and Americans alike have left, but things are still A Mess. Lots of buildings and crops destroyed by bombings, everyone is poor and traumatized and lots of people have just disappeared. Still, life goes on.
My great grandmother, who in my mind will always be my beloved Mémé, is a young woman of 18 or so, works in a broom-making factory and lives in a tiny village at the foot of an old castle. She is also pregnant.
But wait, that's not a problem, a strapping young man of 20 wants to marry her, he's also a factory worker, and more importantly he's a delightful man and wonderful cook. Mémé is a sensible girl, she's very charmed and soon wedding bells are a-clanging.
Here's the catch : the baby she's pregnant with is not her husband's. This is not public information in the slightest, so the couple can live their life without scandal, but it's a sort of hushed up semi-secret within the family. Who is the actual father of the baby? Nobody knows. Maybe Mémé does, it's even likely because everyone in the village knows each other, but if she does, she doesn't tell. Doesn't talk about it, and those in the know know better than to ask.
I sincerely hope it was a sort of one-night-stand and not something more sordid, but that's something we'll never know.
Anywho. Mémé and Pépé have a very happy marriage, and go on to have another child, and they raise the half-siblings as full siblings, never treating the eldest any different. Pépé loves his daughter even if she's not his blood, and she returns it fiercely. As far as my Grandma is concerned, Pépé was her true father, the one who mattered.
Skip forward in time. My Grandma has four daughters, who of course know Pépé as their grandfather without question even after learning The Secret after adulthood. Blood is thicker than water but not as thick as the blackberry jam that Pépé made while you played in the pond during the summer holidays. The youngest of Grandma's four daughters is about to give birth to her first child, and Mémé and Pépé are delighted to welcome a fifth great-grandchild.
Traditionally, a birth is a moment of joy and happiness. I'm sure mine was too, but it was also rather chaotic, as my first action was to karate-kick my mother in the stomach to herald my imminent arrival, therefore making her spill her recently eaten pasta on my dad's shoes. My triumphant entry into this world did not stop there, as my poor beleaguered mother was told, right after delivering a baby of nearly 4kg, that this massive chunk of flesh and screams had Something Wrong With It. Not the best thing to hear after giving birth.
The Something Wrong, as it turned out, was a specific type of hip dysplasia. That means that my hips were not properly finished forming around my femurs to lock my legs to the rest of my body. A slightly too enthusiastic pediatrician demonstrated this by pulling on one of my pudgy little baby legs to show that it would go as far as the stretching of my muscles and skin would allow. My mom, lifelong rugby player nicknamed McGuyver by her friends and toughest person I know, proceeded to burst into tears.
Other than being a sure way to traumatize young mothers, hip dysplasia is not an irreversible problem. Several weeks of wearing solid diapers that were a bit more like a plaster cast than an article of clothing, my bones were set with nothing more than a slight crookedness that would result in mild scoliosis. I learned to walk and sit straight perfectly well, and all was well.
Except.
The pediatrician with very little tact remarked, in passing, how this specific variation of hip dysplasia is particularly common in Brittany, but not so much in our region. Bizarre, thought my mother, we have no Breton relatives or ancestry. But some weeks later, while she was watching baby me wiggle around making a lot of noise, she remembered that in the family village, there had been a family of Bretons.
To be fair, seeing as we had no contact with that family, and I was only told about all this after Pépé and Mémé's passing, we'll never have absolute utter certainty that Unkown Breton Man is the biological source of our very extensive family. But it seems hella likely.
I don't mind the uncertainty very much. I know who my great grandfather was : a very funny old man who kept pigeons, cooked like magic and flipped the table after losing at Scrabble to amuse his many grandchildren and great grandchildren, DNA or no DNA. I keep a picture of him, black and white, marching on strike with a cigarette in his mouth and a béret on his head. My eldest cousin is named after Pépé's father. He's the real family.
But knowing the history of dysplasia in the family is useful. Tonight, Pépé's first great great grandchild is born. Without dysplasia, but the doctors knew to look for signs of it in advance. So, I'm glad to welcome this little one. I'll sit her in my lap in a few years, and tell her how her great great grandparents loved each other deeply from 20 to 90.

It's Hunter Husband Hours tonight! Also, this is perfect for retouching on the lore of Otherworldly Bond!
*takes place within the SSBU universe*
[ Link to Ship Asks ]
PRE-RELATIONSHIP
2. What was their first impressions of each other?
Boy, did they have...interesting first impressions of each other. In Plucky's point of view, they thought Richter was a "karate-sort-of guy", unaware that he's actually a vampire hunter. For Richter, he thought of Plucky as an outsider, maybe from a distant country, far from where Dracula's Castle resided (in reality, Plucky has dimension-hopping powers).
5. Did any of them try to resist their feelings?
Yes. It didn't go well. It's like pumping up a balloon with more air than it needs, and then it suddenly blows up in your face. However, it only created negative tension between Richter and Plucky, thus leading to them making too many assumptions. It wasn't until they got "stuck" in an escape-room-like situation (in reality, Kirby and DDD came up with this plan) and couldn't get out, unless they both confessed.
GENERAL
Who initiated the relationship, and how did it go?
Continuing from the above answer, Richter did. He really didn't want Plucky to be drowning in this tension, so he outright confessed to them every single feeling he bottled up, up to that point. It started out bad at first (in which Plucky started tearing up), but it soon turned around for the better, as it finally gave Plucky the courage to confess too. So, it ended on a positive note (and DDD casually commenting, "Awww, lookit the lovebirds!!")
LOVE
9. Who's more protective?
It's split between them, actually. Should you hurt either of them, or even insult them, please prepare yourself for a fight with one of the strongest Belmonts out there. If we're talking about Plucky, however, they will either dropkick you, or pull out their weapon.

Peko has tons of different brothers and sisters from all around the world. Each with their own lore and personalities! Lets learn a bit about the Munchacookie family.
DALE: Dale is a rough and tough chu, he likes to ride his motorcycle out in the desert! Don’t mess with hi, this big guy will make sure you pay! He makes pretty good pancakes.
STACY: She can be stylish, she can be a clean freak, she’s on her phone quite a bit and spends a lot of her time with her husband Cubel, very often unapologetically making out in the worst times and places.
SPARKLE: Sparkle is a little more reserved, as said in his name, he works out in the mines with his mining boxle buddies. His ego shines like a diamond, but he means well in the end. He’ll do what's necessary to protect his family and friends.
SWEETIE: Sweeite is a vampire chu, but how he ended up as one isn't very known. He lives off the blood of other pokemon, as well as sucking color out of fruit. I guess you could say he has a sweet tooth.
BLIP: Blip is the youngest of the Munchacookie family, being only 4 years old. And yet, he’s highly intelligent for his age, and talented. He has a very serious and intensive rap career, he can shred bars!
CREAMCROM: Creamcrom is a hyperactive chu from the snowy mountains of the north! He can be a bit of a huge prankster. Creamcrom is particularly unique, as he can be killed and die, and somehow turn up again shortly after. No one is sure why.
LEAFYKO: Leafyko is someone who's always prepared! He’s a survivalist, and always travels with his bush. He’s able to hide in it whenever needed. He does  a lot of foraging and stealing from others. If you make foolish survival choices.. you may catch a bush mocking you.
CAESAR: Caesar is from a place called...  Italy. Very strange location. He loves to lift and spar, and very often partakes in various hardcore sports. Many consider him to be an Olympian! He has what’s called a “High jump” ability, allowing him to jump high into the air.
PUNCHY: Punchy is a professional boxer and karate master. If you’ve got what it takes? She’ll show you the way!, With chop chop block and knock punch POW! Think you can beat punchy in a kung fu fight? Square up!

Timeline of her story (excluding flashbacks): 1995-2008 (season 8 of Diagnosis: Murder plus an additional thirteen seasons)
Gender: Cisgender Female
Gender Identity: Female
Species: Human
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Heritage: American
Marital Status: Married
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Citizenship: American
Place of Birth: Covington, Louisiana
Place of Residence: Malibu, California
Occupations: General Nurse Practitioner (retired), Housewife (currently), Stay-at-home Mother (currently)
Hobbies/Skills: Violin, singing, songwriting, reading, prose, poetry, cross-stitching, cosmetology, karate, farming
Portrayer: Jennifer Garner
Personality: Sara Sinclair is a soft-hearted person at her core. She means well and wants the best for everyone, which contributed to her previous naiveness before she grew and became wiser. She is genuinely friendly, but if people whom she cares about, such as her husband or her children, are wronged, then she will fight on their behalf until the end in the calmest way possible. However, in that situation, she loses control of her emotions easier than she usually does. When dealing with personal conflicts, she is much more emotional than she would be if it involved people whom she was not close to. She loves to make people smile when she can and is generally a very friendly person unless she is crossed. Her favorite pass-time is anything musical, such as singing, songwriting, or playing violin, which she is all very talented at. She prefers to do activities like this with her children and her husband, but she also enjoys doing them with her friends as well. She is also a black belt in karate and uses her skills to teach self-defense to her family and loved ones.
Sara is selfless, which is a blessing because it allows her to be there for her family and loved ones more, but also a curse because she often fails to take care of herself on many occasions. Despite generally being shy and mild-mannered, she is also feisty if the situation calls for it, such as if she is being degraded or if someone whom she cares about is being mistreated. Though Sara has gained more confidence over the years and does not avoid conflict as she used to, she still generally has a shy and quiet personality. Her shyness is often mistaken as standoffishness and her quietness is often seen as ignorance. She is also slightly quirky and catches people off-guard with funny clap backs as well as unusual remarks (though these clap backs and remarks are not impolite unless the situation calls for it). Although she is a romantic, she is also a realist, and her idea of romance involves friendship as well as the importance of family. Though she has learned to be confident over the years, Sara still cares too much about what other people think and often panics around people whom she wants to impress, which is her fatal flaw. She also has a habit of diving into her work to escape her problems. When people whom she cares about are in need, she insists on helping them, but often refuses to acknowledge when she is in need. Though she is sometimes stubborn and occasionally impulsive, she is very intelligent and knows how to work with people very well. She is also independent, efficient with assessing problems, and skilled at coming up with solutions.
Sara Sinclair may be a difficult person to understand on the surface, but one must truly get to know her to realize that underneath her mysterious exterior lies a little bit of darkness and a lot of sunshine.
Medical Information
Conditions/Complications: Social Anxiety, Anxiety Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Clinical Depression, Chronic Migraines
Allergies: Aspirin (deathly), pollen (mildly)
Prescribed Medications: Triptans, Antidepressants, Benadryl
Story Summary: Sara Sinclair (born Sara Abrams) was born and raised an only child in Covington, Louisiana to a shady emergency nurse (her mother Faith Sinclair) and a corrupt criminal prosecution lawyer (her father Dominic Abrams). When Sara was only nine years old, Dominic was arrested for obstruction of justice and beaten to death in jail, which prompted Faith to change Sara’s surname for her safety and give her away to a foster home just before Faith died of cancer. Sara was abused at the foster home and was never adopted. As she grew older, she became interested in nursing because she wanted to help people like her mother and decided to study to become a nurse anesthetist. Faith suffered through many surgeries due to having acute myeloid leukemia which is ultimately what led to her death. The anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists were often careless with the anesthetics, which motivated Sara to go into the anesthetic field because she did not want people to suffer like her mother suffered.
Sara graduated high school early at the age of sixteen years with Summa Cum Laude and was awarded a merit scholarship to Harvard Medical School, where she obtained an associate degree in nursing after six years of college. Though she barely failed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing the first time, she passed it the second time with flying colors and obtained her registered nursing license after graduating nursing school in two years at the top of her class. Then, she went on to become a Registered Nurse Anesthetist one month later, applying for a job at the best hospital in Covington, where she was quickly accepted.
Sara quit six months after working at the Covington hospital upon discovering that the hospital and its staff were corrupt and cared only about money. She moved to Malibu, California to apply for a job at Community General Hospital two months later. Though she was more than qualified for a position at the hospital, the only person who trusted Sara was the hospital’s medical pathologist Amanda Bentley because she and Sara were both foster children and, as they eventually discover, former foster sisters. After discovering that Sara transferred from a corrupt hospital, many found it difficult to trust her, but she was hired anyway because the hospital needed her skill and there was no evidence that she was corrupt herself. As the story progresses, however, Surgeon Doctor Mark Sloan, Emergency Doctor Jesse Travis, and Mark’s Police Lieutenant son Steve Sloan begin to trust her as she continues to prove herself as a worthy ally. The more time that she spends with them, the more that they make her feel like part of a happy family, as she grows to see Mark as a father, Steve as a brother, Amanda as a sister, and continues to form close relationships at the hospital, in her profession, and elsewhere. After spending two years working at Community General Hospital as a Registered Nurse, Sara decides to continue her nursing education to become a General Nurse Practitioner while she is still working at Community General Hospital and accomplishes her goal two years later.
Though Jesse and Sara initially get off on the wrong foot when Sara mistakes Jesse’s overly friendly personality as coming off too strong and Jesse mistakes Sara’s shyness as being standoffish, they gradually grow to understand each other and eventually form a close bond after being trapped in a malfunctioning elevator together. After being best friends for slightly over two years, Sara and Jesse realize that they are in love, though they are both too anxious to admit their feelings to one another. After hesitating for two months about proposing to Sara due to his insecurities, Jesse finally decides to pop the question while he and Sara are on a casual outing, but just before he is about to do so, he and Sara are caught in an explosion and trapped together under the rubble of a demolished building. After Jesse falls unconscious, Sara finds his proposal ring under the rubble and speaks to him about it when he awakes. Assuming that they are both going to perish, Jesse proposes to Sara while they are trapped, and Sara accepts. They say their vows to each other while they are confined to the debris of the ruined building just before Jesse goes into cardiac arrest. Sara manages to save his life by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. Miraculously, they are rescued by their friends and the fire department, and the young couple begins planning their wedding as soon as they recover, tying the knot one month later.
One year after Sara and Jesse get married, they decide that they want to have children of their own and begin trying for a family as soon as they make their decision. Nine months later, Sara gives birth, through a Caesarean section, to fraternal twins: a boy named Stark, which is a combination of Steve and Mark’s first names, and a girl named Mandy, which is a play on Amanda’s first name. After taking four months off work for maternity leave, Sara decides that she wants to be a stay-at-home mother as well as a housewife, so she resigns from her job while Jesse continues to work and be the breadwinner for his family.
Two years after the birth of her children, Sara is framed for financial conspiracy. When criminal defense attorney Benjamin Matlock arrives in California to defend Sara, Sara discovers that the plaintiff, though guilty of financial conspiracy, was also falsely accused of medical malpractice years ago by Sara’s father. However, it is revealed through a mutual friend that it was Sara’s mother who convinced Sara’s father to convict the plaintiff so that she could steal money for her own expensive cancer treatments, which led to the death of many people. Sara’s father was charged with obstruction of justice and imprisoned in jail where he was beaten to death by his vicious inmates. Sara works with her friends and family to solve the case as she painfully comes to terms with the fact that her mother was not as heroic as she believed.
Sara slowly begins to uncover more about the true nature of her family tree and is confronted by demons of her past that involve her parents as well as their corrupt ways. However, she manages to overcome those demons with the help of her loved ones and the strength that she finds within herself. Sara Sinclair lives a comfortable life in Malibu, California with her husband and her children in a quaint little hobby farm near Malibu Beach.

Inside the heartwarming world of Hot Wheels collecting
Tumblr media
What seems like a simple hobby can take you across the world.
In 1995, Sheri Abbey was at a swap meet in California when something small caught her eye: a classic model Radio Flyer wagon Hot Wheels car, with a spoiler, rear-mounted engine and butterfly style steering wheel.
Abbey had always appreciated machines. She grew up in Michigan, where she lived in a household of car enthusiasts. Her dad owned a body shop and would occasionally race. Together, Abbey and her father built hot rods, American muscle cars with large engines modified for speed.
It made sense her love of big cars might translate to an affinity for small ones. But when Abbey picked up the toy, she couldn’t have known where it would take her.
“I didn’t realize how collectible they were,” Abbey says. Soon, she was sharing the hobby with her son, who was three at the time. “We would go to car shows and because of Hot Wheels, he would know the names of all the cars.”
A lifetime of collecting had begun.
Mattel released the first Hot Wheels toy line in 1968 with 16 cars, which included custom versions of the Camaro, Barracuda, Mustang, Thunderbird and Beetle. They have become known in Hot Wheels lore as the Sweet 16.
Hot Wheels quickly became a force in the toy market. They sold for a dollar, making them a perfectly affordable toy for parents whenever they went to grocery stores with their kids.
Hot Wheels have evolved in the decades since. The mainline cars — the dollar cars you might find at your local Wal-Mart — still exist, but now premium-series cars, with more complex designs and better materials, are sold at a markup. Mattel also makes Treasure Hunt cars, which are special edition versions of the mainline cars.
Hot Wheels is no longer marketed strictly for children. The fact people who grew up with Hot Wheels, like Abbey, still love them so many years later isn’t an accident. Mattel has consciously made Hot Wheels more appealing to adults.
Amy Boylan started in the software division for Mattel in the late-1990s. While she was with the company, Boylan noticed there were thousands of Hot Wheels collectors around the world, and built an official site and forum to bring enthusiasts together. The Hot Wheels Red Line Club was established. For an annual membership fee, collectors had access to purchase higher-end cars.
“We ended up having 5,000 members in the first six months,” Boylan says. “I realized right away how big it was and how rabid our collectors were. Collectors always collected, but we brought order to it. We built a community of almost 100,000 people worldwide.”
Tumblr media
In 1999, family members in Montana tipped Abbey off to a friend who was selling his Hot Wheels collection, which totaled more than 7,000 cars, including some from the original 1968 release. When she acquired them, she started selling the cars as a side hustle.
Eventually, her childhood enthusiasm for taking apart real cars bled into her hobby. Abbey got into customization.
“You could make them into anything you can imagine,” Abbey says. “That’s when your artistry just takes over.”
Abbey took Hot Wheels cars that retailed for a dollar, stripped them and put them back together with new parts. They sold for $30 apiece.
Her customized cars caught the attention of the Hot Wheels community. In 2004, Mattel flew Abbey to Japan for a customization event.
“I’m a country girl,” Abbey says. “So going to Tokyo was crazy. Everything was overwhelming. It was a wonderful experience.”
Abbey spent six months working on various Hot Wheels customs. One of the most memorable cars was a McDonald’s Studebaker that Abbey turned into a Dragster.
“I had the details right down to how I wired the sparkplugs,” Abbey says. “I put in the gas tanks. You could see all the details. I roughed up all the tires so it looked like it had been doing burnouts.”
In 2009, Abbey was inducted into the Diecast Hall of Fame as a customizer. Now 58, Abbey has gone back to work as a machinist. The money is good enough to help pay for her two kids to go to college, but working seven days a week means Abbey has had to leave behind her Hot Wheels hobby for the last five years.
Now, Abbey airbrushes and customizes life-size cars.
“I’d rather paint bigger things,” Abbey says. “The small cars were getting tedious, and I’m getting a little arthritis in my hands.”
Abbey’s Hot Wheels origin story is just one of many. That’s the beautiful thing about collecting: You make your own rules. How you enter the hobby — whether it is because of your love of cars, or because they were a huge part of your childhood — is very much unique to you.
Some collectors, like Marcia Walker, take up the hobby from their significant others. Walker lives in Wisconsin, and first learned about Hot Wheels when she met her now-husband 23 years ago.
“He was collecting them,” Walker says. “And I was like, ‘Um, these are toys. What’s the big deal?’” She was soon swept up in the Hot Wheels world. Walker attended local collectors’ shows with her husband and helped him track down hard-to-find cars. She fell in love with the experience, and eventually Hot Wheels became a family bonding activity with her two sons, who are now 18 and 21.
“We took them to all these Hot Wheels events,” Walker says. “They were able to see things in the world other than the four corners of our house.”
Walker estimates her family has thousands of Hot Wheels cars in their collection.
“To be honest I would be afraid to find out,” Walker says. “There’s cases under the stairs, there’s cases in the closet, there’s boxes here, there’s boxes there. I don’t think there’s a room in the house that doesn’t have Hot Wheels in it.”

Jeremy Iglesias
A look at Jeremy Iglesias’ collection, which contains more than 1,500 cars.
Some collectors are simply gonzo. James Savel, 60, joined the Red Line Club in 2003. Today, his basement is filled with Hot Wheels cars from the original collection, and every decade thereafter. The oval-shaped Sizzler racetrack he used to race his Hot Wheels as a kid still sits in a storage room in his basement.
Standouts in his collection include the Chevy Bel Air Candy Striper and the Volkswagen Beach Bomb. The purple prototype version, Savel tells me, is currently worth $300,000.
“Periodically I’ll come downstairs and just look at the cars,” he says.
Savel’s son Mark, 34, finally got into Hot Wheels last year, to the delight of his father. When Savel had his will written up recently, he divided his most valued items between his son and daughter. “My sister gets his record collection,” Mark says. “I get the Hot Wheels.”
Savel jokes that when he passes away, Mark, a real estate agent with a keen understanding of return on investment, will probably sell his dad’s entire collection the next day. “He’s probably right,” Mark says, laughing.
Mark is getting married later this year, and because of the expenses involved for the family, Savel vowed to stop spending so much money on Hot Wheels. “And then I get a call from him,” Mark says. “He tells me he bought the Hot Wheels Tesla Racer.”
The car is remote controlled and costs $400.
“Shipping is free though,” Savel says.
Many collectors are sentimentalists, chasing what they once yearned for as kids. Jason Marshall, a 45-year-old graphic designer, has also watched his Hot Wheels collection grow in the past five years. In 2015, he was walking past an aisle of Hot Wheels at a store when he noticed a new Lamborghini that was just released.
Marshall remembers watching Transformers in the 80s and the first time he saw different models of Lamborghinis — the Sideswipe, Sunstreaker and Countach — transform.
“They were full of opulence,” Marshall says. “It was the style. The way the doors just went straight up. It was unlike anything that has come before or since.”
In the past half-decade, Marshall has devoted himself to collecting every single Lamborghini that Hot Wheels has produced. He’s about 15 cars away, but two will be particularly hard to track down.
The first is a plated 18-karat gold car, one of only 1,000 produced in the 1990s. It is a mail-in car, meaning you could only receive it if you mailed in specific receipts, making it a much rarer than the cars that usually sit on grocery shelves. This particular Hot Wheel currently carries a price tag of around $300 on the resale market.
The second is a 25th anniversary edition Lamborghini produced in 2000 for Mattel’s birthday. It was given to employees with a “happy birthday” message on the hood. Marshall says he’s never seen one in person, and only knows it from a picture online.
So, why not buy an actual Lamborghini in real life?
“Who’s got a few hundred thousand dollars for a car that you probably have to pay triple that over its lifetime for maintenance?” Marshall says. “And that’s not even considering insurance.”
Tumblr media
The commonality among all of the collectors, no matter how they found themselves immersed in Hot Wheels, is the joy that it brings them.
Jeremy Iglesias, 18, lives in Atlanta and is studying automotive technology at Chattahoochee Technical College. In his five years of collecting, Iglesias has amassed more than 1,500 cars in his Hot Wheels collection.
“There isn’t a right way to be a Hot Wheels collector,” Iglesias says. “Cars usually get sentimental value either by being present with me for an event, going with me for a trip, gift from a person, or something from my childhood.”
There is one wrong way to be a Hot Wheels collector. Like other items that appreciate in value over time, Hot Wheels are popular among resellers.
Adam Janusick, in his mid-20s, lives in central Illinois and has been collecting since 2011. He says the most challenging thing about the hobby these days is dealing with scalpers — those Hot Wheels buyers who are only in it for a profit.
“These guys will watch the stores like vultures,” Janusick says. “Hot Wheels comes in boxes of 72. The moment those boxes come off the truck, they will be there, ripping them apart, taking any car worth of any value, buying them, bringing them back home, and instantly putting them on eBay for a markup.”
Recently, Janusick has developed a strategy for tracking down Treasure Hunts. The key is to ignore big box retailers like Wal-Mart and Target and browse local grocery stores, where scalpers are less likely to look.
He was digging one day in Hy-Vee, a local grocery chain, and noticed something suspicious about a BMV C4 Hot Wheels. The paint was a little darker, more sparkly than the mainline car. The wheels were shiny and actual rubber.
“I audibly shouted, ‘no way,’” Janusick says, his voice rising as though he was back in the aisle discovering the car for the very first time.
Instead of growing out of Hot Wheels, many collectors grew into them as they got older. The hobby isn’t just a nostalgic trip; it’s about taking their childhood dreams seriously.
Abbey is a perfect example. Though she has reached the end of her road as a Hot Wheels collector, she still keeps that part of her life close. She has plans to move to a smaller place, where she wants to shrink her collection and set up displays for her customized Hot Wheels and awards.
“As a kid, you dream of the unattainable thing,” Marshall says. “As an adult, when you make money, you can afford a few things that you couldn’t before.”
By embracing what some might consider a childish hobby, Hot Wheels collectors show dreams can be valid from any age. Growing up simply means realizing that truth.

Oscars 2020: From Parasite to Laura Dern, here’s how they can make history this year - hollywood
Tumblr media
Can the black comedy Parasite win South Korea its first Oscar ever? Will Laura Dern become the first in her acting family to nab an Oscar statuette? Here’s a look at some interesting facts and trivia ahead of the 92nd Academy Awards being held Sunday in Hollywood:Parasite’ aims bigParasite already made history when it became the first South Korean film nominated for best international feature film as well as for best picture and best director. The dark comedic thriller, which has taken the awards circuit by storm, is tipped to win as best foreign-language film, but it also could make history by becoming the first non-English-language production to win for best picture.
Tumblr media
This combination of photos shows best supporting actress Oscar nominees, from left, Kathy Bates in Richard Jewell, Florence Pugh in Little Women, Margot Robbie in Bombshell, Laura Dern in Marriage Story, and Scarlett Johansson in Jojo Rabbit. ( AP ) All in the familyDern, nominated for a best supporting actress award for Marriage Story, comes from Hollywood royalty. While dad Bruce and mom Diane Ladd are no strangers to the Oscars, Laura would be the first in her family to actually win the award. In 1992, Dern and Ladd became the first mother-daughter duo to receive Oscar nominations for work on the same film -- Rambling Rose. A Closer Look at Jewelry Eras
Have you ever looked at your jewelry and wondered about the history behind it? Who designed it? Was it crafted by hand or made with a machine? Is there a special story behind the specific design? So many questions to be answered!
Jewelry is full of history and lore. Throughout the decades, jewelry styles have changed many times based on desires, trends, and resources. In this article, we’re delving into the various jewelry eras, discovering what was popular and what influenced the trends of the period.
Georgian Jewelry
Circa 1714-1837
This jewelry era was named for the four English kings named George that ruled in succession of one another during this period. Pieces from this era not only drew influence from England, but Germany, France, and Italy alike. Georgian era jewelry was handcrafted and often took long lengths of time to produce. This is because artisan tools and techniques were fairly rudimentary; however, the metal work is so distinctly intricate that it could have only been made by hand. The designs are bold, ornate, and symmetrical. Bows and swags were popular motifs, and metal-working techniques like cannetille and repoussé were common. Garnet, topaz, coral, and diamonds were fashionable and were often placed in high karat yellow gold and silver settings. The diamonds used in Georgian jewelry were usually rose cut or table cut and often foil backed to give them more shine.
Victorian Jewelry
Circa 1837-1901
Victorian era jewelry was named after Britain’s Queen Victoria who reigned from 1837-1901. Her sixty-four-year reign is usually divided into three parts: The Romantic Period, The Grand Period, and The Aesthetic Period. Jewelry from each period has its own distinct characteristics and includes different styles that were popularized during her reign. Victoria often reflected her emotions in her style. Therefore, jewelry from The Romantic Period was highly sentimental, with feminine motifs like flowers and hearts. These designs reflected the Queen’s deep devotion to her beloved husband, Prince Albert.
After Albert’s untimely death, Britain entered The Grand Period. During this time, Queen Victoria wanted to remain fashionable while in mourning and “mourning jewelry” was created using jet, onyx and other dark materials. Neo-Classical designs based on archaeological finds in Greece and Rome were also popular, as well as Egyptian and Assyrian themes. Recurrent designs included crescent shapes, snakes, and cameos.
The Aesthetic Period of Victoria’s rule marked a new era of looking forward. There were major cultural and industrial shifts taking place and there was a renewed appreciation for hand-made art, ultimately resulting in the Arts and Crafts movement around 1880. Jewelry from this period steered away from the heavier and darker themes from previous periods and instead pieces were designed to be lighter and daintier. Women were beginning to lead more active lifestyles and were becoming increasingly independent, and the jewelry of this period reflects this cultural shift. Gemstones most commonly used in Victorian jewelry were diamonds, jet, garnet, amethyst, coral, turquoise, tortoise shell, and chalcedony, which were often set in silver and yellow gold. Diamonds were usually rose cuts or early brilliant cuts.
Art Nouveau Jewelry
Circa 1895-1915
Art Nouveau is French for “new art.” This style was greatly influenced by the Japanese art that was being imported to Europe at the time. It is also seen as an artistic revolt against the mechanical themes and methods of manufacturing that came out of the Industrial Revolution. Nouveau designs were more organic and asymmetrical. Art Nouveau jewelry incorporated sweeping and flowing lines with natural motifs such as flowers, insects, birds, and the female form. This era of artistic expression was a reaction to a number of cultural shifts happening in France at the time, most notably, women’s rights movements. That is why jewelry pieces from this period often depict women as a reflection of men’s fantasies (sweet, sexualized, and non-threatening). Diamonds were uncommon in Art Nouveau jewelry and were overshadowed by the use of colorful enamels and glass, and gemstones such as pearls, opals, amber, moonstone, tourmaline, amethyst, and chalcedony. Noted Art Nouveau designers were Rene Lalique, a glass artisan renowned for his stunning creations, and Louis Comfort Tiffany, who designed stained glass windows and lamps (hence Tiffany lamps), glass mosaics, blown glass, and more.
Edwardian Jewelry
Circa 1901-1915
This jewelry era was named for England’s King Edward VII. His reign was marked by wealth and opulence, and jewelry was flaunted to reflect one’s affluence. Edwardian jewelry was made using the finest gemstones and precious metals. These pieces used traditional designs and employed the garland style with fluid lines and ornamental motifs. Tiaras were commonly worn by the elite, and were designed to be large and ornate. The use of platinum in jewelry became widespread and was valued not just for its pure color, but for its strength as well. Platinum’s durability allowed for more intricate designs and the use of delicate filigree. Edwardian jewelry is distinctive for its white-on-white look using fine platinum filigree set with top quality pearls and diamonds. Simple chain necklaces with delicate pendants replaced pins and brooches in women’s fashion trends. Earrings that dangled were very much considered high fashion and were designed to daintily move and sway.
Art Deco Jewelry
Circa 1915-1939
The term Art Deco is derived from the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris, France in 1925. Art Deco designs were those made between WWI and WWII and were much bolder than the delicate and flowing styles that were characteristic of Edwardian and Art Nouveau pieces. Art Deco jewelry is known for its geometric shapes and vivid contrasting colors that were achieved using richly hued gemstones such as diamonds, black onyx, lapis lazuli, rubies, emeralds, sapphires, jade, turquoise, and coral. Platinum was the most common metal used, but jewelry was also crafted from white gold. Designs were streamlined and linear and were achieved by the growing use of machines, which allowed for these jewels to be produced much quicker and in larger quantities than ever before.
Retro Jewelry
Circa 1940’s
During WWII, gemstones and platinum were in short supply and in some cases were restricted from use, in turn causing gold and enamel to become very popular. Various shades of gold, such as rose and green, could be found in a single piece of jewelry and were used to enhance the design and make up for the lack of color from gemstones. Because the import of gemstones from countries like South Africa was infrequent, synthetic gems were often used as a substitution. Snake chains were popular for necklaces and bracelets, and were known for their heavy appearance, but lightweight feel. Flowers, bows, and animal depictions were common motifs employed in retro jewelry designs. Gemstones that were lighter in color such as citrine, aquamarine, and amethyst as well as smaller diamonds, sapphires, and rubies were used sparingly as accents. Often, when resources were sparse, those seeking fresh designs would have to have their existing jewelry remodeled into something new.
