what rlly gets to me is that toph makes katara furious. she’s messy and rude and infuriating and she has quite the temper. she’s entitled and defensive and “help” seems to be a foreign concept to her, both towards herself and others and katara doesn’t get it but she wants to get it. katara still takes toph to the spa and she calls her pretty and defends her when other girls are making fun of her, and then they fight in the mud and get down and dirty and they clash and collide and they are gentle and caring with each other still. aang was never someone katara felt responsibility or rivalry towards, there’s no actual sibling experience in there. it is toph that means the definitive becoming of katara into a big sister. as toph says it herself (“she actually cares about me—the real me”), katara is annoyed by her and she yells at her and toph yells back and they argue and they have fun together and katara never turns away from who toph really is. and that’s all toph ever wanted, really.

Starco: A Love Story
*Ahem*
Tumblr media
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*Sips water*
Okay, so... I typically hate when main characters end up together. They oftentimes have no chemistry, little chemistry or have a relationship built atop a single event that leads me to believe that the real world will break them.
Even the masterpiece that is Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aang and Katara’s relationship is built largely around the war. I don’t mind their relationship, but if they’d broken up between TLA and LOK, I’d understand.

When Star and Marco met, they became fast friends. By Storm the Castle, Marco was willing to put himself in harm’s way to save Star, a far cry from the Safe Kid in Star Comes to Earth. There are hints of attraction between the two as is the staple for these types of shows, but nothing concrete. So far, however, they have survived bombardment from Ludo and his cronies and Marco literally stared death in the face and tried to punch it. Star destroyed her most prized possession, not for the fate of the world, but for the life of her best friend.

By Starcrushed, Star does have a crush on Marco and, presumably vice versa, but Marco is with Jackie. Marco and Jackie have a wonderful relationship. It is characterized by both having the same interests and thoroughly enjoying each other’s company, something that was built on since episode one. Jackie was not a character thrown in for conflict, she was established as Marco’s crush and he and her got the time they deserved together. They were, however, doomed to fail and Marco as Star have shared so much time together. Not just time, but experiences. Still, what they feel for each other is largely friendship and attraction.

Startom is amazing in that Tom is her ex-boyfriend given a second chance after he betters himself... and it works. If the series had left it there, I would have been okay. Star and Tom are both denizens of Mewni, both are magical beings and they have more history together than Marco and Star. Like Jackie and Marco, they share the same interests and, even though Star scares him sometimes, Tom is good for her. Sadly, their personalities were just not right. Star is a free spirit. She cannot be tied down and any attempt to do so will confuse and upset her. While the prince of demons might not seem it, Tom is a bit more realistic. He might not have a clear vision of his future, but he has an idea of where he wants it to go. It’s a path and Star, unintentionally, refuses to walk it with him.

Kelly and Marco really only bonded over a love of violence and being recent breakupees. I thoroughly loved them together, but I understand why they didn’t last.

I would not have been opposed to this. A love for adventure connects the two, as well as decades spent in pursuit of one another. The age difference is creepy but only if you think about it. Heckapoo’s inability to take anything but threats to national security seriously would definitely not be good for a relationship, but... we’ll always have fanfic.
Tumblr media
My main point for these two being right for each other is something that a. lot of shows gloss over: they have lived together. You’d be surprised how much someone you thought you loved starts to grate on you when you share living space. Marco and Star have lived together in both Mewni and Earth (good thing as now they are merged) and have still remained the best of friends.
Not just that, their adventures haven’t always been to defeat the BBEG. They’ve gone on quests as serious as rescuing Star’s mother or Marco’s baby sister, to as silly as resurrecting a dead clown and essentially fantasy Costco. Even more serious, defeating the immortal warlord Toffee and destroying the source of all magic. Their adventures have range and, through it all, they’ve been the best of friends.

Closing statements:
Star and Marco have been through the wringer, separate and apart. They have tried their hands in other relationships but things just weren’t right outside of their friendship. Marco is no longer the Safe Kid. He is brave and talented and dangerous if the situation calls for it. Star is no longer a reckless wildcard; she is strong and kind and more free than ever before. Marco doesn’t walk a path, he has no destiny outside of Star. We can see, when all is said and done, when the world crumbles, Star and Marco will find their ways back to each other. Marco doesn’t know what to do with himself without Star; Star doesn't want to do anything without Marco.
