Jannik with Kei at the Miami Open 2024
Okay here's the thing yeah I watched a lot of Kei's matches when I was younger, and liking the anime 'Prince of Tennis' led me to knowing Kei as a person bcs the author met him few times before and his career during the big 4 domination was noteworthy for everyone. I truly enjoyed his matches when I started watching tennis, and I wish him nothing but the very best. I was truly happy for him when he got the WC for Miami, and despite everything, the comeback journey would be slow but steady for him. I wish to see him again winning matches against younger players (he mentioned he wanted to play Carlitos before), and that would make me happy for him. Everything about him and Raonic made me reminisce about my teenage days as a tennis fan, and I'm glad I can watch them again after a few years. This picture means a lot to me as well. I hope everything will be alright for him ♡

📸 🎥 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
The second set was its own rollercoaster, especially toward the end of it. Some would have thought Nishikori could close it out, while classic Nishikori rollercoaster reappeared until the end of the match. Here was how everything unfolded.
Nishikori started the second set with a working volley (after going all the way through the baseline) to break early (1-0) at the second set. After Nishikori’s consolidations, Michael started to paint his own lines thanks to his cross-court forehand to set himself two points ahead before breaking back 2-2. However, Nishikori took this personally and broke back 3-2 thanks to his trademark backhand down-the-line winner. A backhand winner, which Michael got run over to, opened the path for Nishikori to equalize the point (2-3* to 15-15) before he held his service game 4-2. This was followed by him somehow having 2 break points that was converted thanks to a working drop shot (5-2).
Toward the end of the match, things happened, especially on Nishikori’s service games consistency. In the first try of serving it out, the tightness was still felt, and Michael started to step his game up, which peaked with a swift forehand return to break back 3-5. Almost breaking for the match instead, it was not sufficient for Nishikori because Michael ended up holding that service game 3-5, hence Nishikori had to serve for the championship for the second time. Somehow, Michael started to play loosely, pressing Nishikori from the baseline until he had a forehand winner to set himself 2 points ahead before another see-saw game (which involved Nishikori’s match point creation but non-converted, one of which due to a failed smash) resulted in Michael’s break to 5-5, thanks to his backhand down-the-line winner (where he definitely learned the reverse card from the best).
Avoiding the possibility of this match ended in a tie-breaker, Nishikori ended up breaking to 0 thanks to a baseline-oriented rally that ended with a working volley, especially in a defense-to-offense manner (6-5). The third time was the charm for Nishikori to finally serve it out, fittingly sealed the title with another volley to mark his first Challenger title since Dallas Challenger 2018, as well as his first tennis title after 20 months.

This was the Jaguar's event attended by Kei Nishikori to commemorate the new series under his name and Jaguar had the author (mangaka) of the Prince of Tennis (Left: Konomi Takeshi) drew an illustration for Kei, inspired by the car. They talked how Kei used to watch the anime as a kid a lot (yes this show is old and the new ones are still running), and Konomi-sensei also follows Kei's tennis career closely too. He mentioned he watched his matches late at night and hoped for the best for the entire season (that year) for him.

Wait what was Jacks physical appearance again? Whenever my mc interacts with Jacks (male, in this case) Jannik Sinner keeps popping up in my head lol. I dunno why he just exudes skinny pale victorian child in my head 😭 was he ever ginger haired? I dunno why I thought this 😭😭
HAHAHHA. Ooh I think Jannik Sinner is a little too gangly for Jacks, who is smaller and more compact, I'd say. And the ginger curly hair almost gives Sam vibes instead (here's Sinner looking his Sam-est, though I don't think Sam's gangly either):

But uh Jacks, let's see: Brunette, not particularly built for power or intimidation, but endurance — they're almost atypical in the sense that they don't give off very "Jocky" energy, and seem almost cerebral / quiet / shy in their mannerisms and demeanor.
I think Kei Nishikori's build could be similar to how I imagine Jacks.

Atlanta (250) QF: Taylor Fritz [1] def. Kei Nishikori [PR] 6-4, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 Tennis TV
T. Fritz's redirection started to take effect by the end of the first set, and he started to nail the rhythm right in time to start the second set. By then, he had an almost flawless approach trying to crack on Nishikori's defenses, with his offensive shots starting to make its own mark. This resulted in not only he had 4 opportunities to break throughout the match, but he also converted 75% of them as a result of his own winners trying to press Nishikori on return.
Interestingly, T. Fritz's first serves were almost flawless, with a 100% winning percentage by the end of the first set but decreased 14% in the second set despite landing 3% less than Nishikori. Furthermore, his service games were mostly on point aided by his 7 aces, while Nishikori's second serves were the most vulnerable in this match with a 45% winning percentage even if he double-faulted just once. The follow-up rallies had its answers because some shot rushes at the end did not help, keeping Nishikori's balance further off by the end of the second set.
J.J. Wolf awaits in the semifinals, where he earlier defeated Dominik Koepfer 6-2, 6-3. This match would mark T. Fritz's first meeting with J.J., as well as his seventh main Tour semifinal appearance (and first head-to-head win against Nishikori himself!). Knowing both players, while aggression could also be the key, pacing would be the other thing. Should be a blast tomorrow, then! In contrast, Nishikori will also head to the Washington, D.C. (Citi Open) as a wild card recipient, trying to continue his epic comeback to the best of his ability to get his main Tour grip back, whose week is still positive this week despite the likely injury coming from this match.
