A Lady and Her Knight

((Wow, I wrote something. Shock and horror! Only context needed is that Niini's family is awful and looking for her, and these are preemptive movements to keep her from being discovered. Khela'li is played by the lovely @healerstail , ofc.))

Niini was uncomfortable.

You had to know what to look for, of course, but Khela'li knew exactly what the signs were. And every single one was visible on the Lalafell.

Excusing himself from his conversation, the miqo'te swept his way through the crowd, making sure to not take a direct path, still making polite passing conversations as he went. So by the time he finally appeared behind his companion, kneeling in the shadows, one hand discreetly touching the small of her back, it seemed like a far more natural progression.

"...you're not enjoying yourself."

She kept her eyes roaming across the crowd, the small smile on her face a tiny bit forced. "I have been propositioned by three men so far. And one woman. I do not believe I can eat anything they have provided here for food. This outfit is extremely restrictive. I can barely move."

The hand at her back moved in a small circle, gently easing a bit of tension. "But you do look amazing in it."

Her smile softened a little, becoming a bit more natural. "...thank you. That is the only thing keeping me from breaking some of these seams."

"Mm." Khela'li leaned forward, just barely coming into her line of vision. She could see his expression harden a touch. "... anyone you recognize here?"

"Not a single soul. I am beginning to think that my... family and their associates have put a pause on their revelry for now."

"Good." He pulled back out of her sight. The hand on her back still remained, though. "... you're doing really well at these parties. I'm very impressed."

"The prism helps assuage many of my fears of discovery. But..."

"But..?"

"...I... believe I have reached my limit for tonight. My apologies, I understand that it is rather early..."

"Don't."

The hand on her back slipped to her hip, gently pulling her backward against his chest. A quiet voice rumbled next to her ear. "Don't apologize. I am very, very proud of you, and how far you've come since I met you."

She could feel the flush rising to her cheeks almost as quickly as she heard the slightly scandalized voices of various socialites around her. "...Khela'li. I believe we are... 'acting inappropriately'."

"Mm. We're done here either way." Scooping up the Lalafell, Khela'li gave a mocking bow towards the party goes before striding out the door. As soon as they left, Niini threw her head back in laughter.

"Do you know how -long- I wanted to do that? Just leave a party like that, stolen away by some handsome man? I read it in so many stories."

A quick flash of a grin was all she could see as they turned down a more darkened hallway. "I like to believe I am a bit better than just a story. After all..." He tilted her chin up with a finger, stealing her breath with a soft kiss. "...you don't get to choose where you go next in a story..."

"...I would like to head home. Quickly."

"As you wish, my lady."

Save Tonight

He was leaving.

She was lying on her stomach, warm and still basking in that hazy afterglow, watching him get dressed, with her eyes half open.

Normal. Routine. A ritual they had done dozens of times before.

He finished pulling on his boots, turned back to her with a smile, one last kiss for the road...

Then his face fell.

"..Niini? Why are you crying?"

"What? I am no-"

She touched her cheek, stunned by the damp she felt there. When had...?

"I....I do not know. I just...I was thinking about you leaving, and the house being empty...and it was making me a little meloncholy, but I did not think it that bad..."

Her shoulders started shaking in spite of her words.

"I promised myself I....I would not do this, I am not going to make you stay just because I am a bit -lonely-...."

Slowly, she covered her face with her hands.

"I'm...sorry, I'm so sorry, Khela....."

The bed shifted slightly, and she heard the soft 'thunk' of boots hitting the floor, before she was wrapped up in a warm embrace as Khela'li rolled back into bed beside her.

"...where I need to go isn't important right now. But -you- are, Niini."

It hurt. It always did, when he tried to make her feel important.

She buried her face in his chest, trying to stifle her sobs.

Maybe....one day....

She would feel like she deserved it.

If Khela'li is being classy, he'd say C'oretta's smile. The way it lights up her face, especially when she's going on about a subject she's passionate about, is one of the reasons he affectionately calls her Sunshine. If he's being crass, well, there's a lot to be said about low cut shirts and bared legs.

What does your muse think is my muse’s most attractive feature?

She DOES have a really cute, light-up-the-room smile...

...but she’s also well aware of what she’s got. Khela’li’s welcome to see more any-time.

Niini....isn't the happiest person. She tries very hard to not show it to others, but she has pretty severe abandonment issues and no self esteem to speak of. She does try her hardest to be positive for -other- people's successes, they're not hers after all!

The best way she's found to make her happier, she's discovered, is a picnic lunch (someone who can cook has made), and an afternoon on the beach close to her home. Keep her -out of the house- if she's having a bad day!

And, of course, Khela'li can always make her smile, no matter how down she is! He knows just what she needs to get out of her own brain.

👫 Dark/Meya - C'oretta/Khela'li

1) Dark occasionally sends Meya little thoughtful gifts–usually favorite snacks, but sometimes little trinkets or such she thinks the miqo’te will like–as not only a show of appreciation, but also as attempts to cheer her up; Meya’s far too melancholy far too often, and it’s worrying.

2) Meya was one of the first in Gage Acq. that Dark met and is pretty much what convinced her to join. If it had been just Fink and/or Erick, Dark would have walked before considering their offer.

3) Meya’s hands down the prettiest girl in the room, and one of the few people that can make the usually confident and stylish Dark Autumn feel awkward. 

4) Meya is Dark’s choice for go-to healer. Lucie’s too flighty, and others don’t make it a focus or aren’t as skilled. Dark understands the frustrations and need to branch out and learn new skills, though, and offers to help Meya with training when possible,

1) C’oretta asked Khela to show her his gun (*cough*) and teach her to shoot as a way to flirt and get close to the handsome Keeper, but then she found she sort of likes firearms? Weird, but hey, why not, and so she’s kinda learning how being a machinist works on her own, between jobs.

2) She absolutely has pics of promos he’s done for Gage Acq, or on contract to their clients, and some doodles she’s made herself, and has them plastered in her room to gaze at dreamily.

3) C’oretta really wants to do more than flirt and tease–but she also feels like she ought to be careful for Niini’s sake. She doesn’t know much about the lalafell, but she seems kinda fragile and is super into Khela, so unless C’oretta gets a more explicit signal that things are cool, she will continue frustrating herself into fantasy-land.

4) Violet has totally chewed and gored a pair of Khela’s shoes before. Whether because she hated them and they were enemies that needed to die, or she loved them to literal pieces, is a mystery the “piggie” will never reveal. C’oretta offered to pay for replacements because of course they were expensive brand items from a photo shoot promotion, godsdammit…
