there are certain things that must be present in an adaptation of david:
he has So Much Conscience
he has so many EMOTIONS
he is built like the side of a barn
he is as autistic as a sackful of cats
he will get sick if someone coughs in the same county as him
he's just a little guy. he's just a little GUY. he's kind and loving and just trying to do the right thing and in way over his head and everyone who sees him wants to protect him
he is so brave. he's so so brave. you can't make him back down no matter how much you frighten him, if he's sure that what he's doing is right
his worst flaw is that he's very prideful and prone to self-righteousness. his second worst is that he's got a temper and he's very prone to mouthing off when he loses it
he's on a hair trigger when it comes to laying down his life, his honor, and everything else he has for anyone who needs help, even if it's already too late.
not a single adaptation I've seen yet has understood all of these things. most have gotten a few of them, and a few have gotten most of them. but the search continues

The round-house was like a shambles
I was struck by David's phrasing here. In modern times, the more usual phrase is "X was a shambles", because these days the primary meaning of the word "shambles" is the metaphorical one, describing great disorder of no specific cause.
David, in saying that the round-house was like a shambles, is using the literal meaning from which the metaphor derives, producing a more precise and colourful (more visceral, if you like) image: a shambles was a place where animals were slaughtered.

Im tired as hell but i really wanted to do it so
No subs but
Sun in the eyes,
Forget offences
Tell me, how I lived

Can Davie Balfour from Kidnapped survive Castle Dracula?
I'm not convinced Davie Balfour can survive a stiff breeze
In fairness to Davie, he makes it out of his own book a shocking amount of alive given how much of it he spends all but dead. This boy has morals of adamant combined with the constitution of a wet paper bag and the good sense of your average 17 year old.
Jonathan arrived at a creepy castle in the middle of the night and stood awkwardly in the courtyard till somebody came and got him. Davie arrived at a creepy old house in the middle of the night and immediately started kicking the door and shouting imprecations at the inhabitants. When Jonathan learned his host was going to kill him he went into stealth mode with snooping and journaling and pretending nothing was wrong in a desperate attempt to stay alive. When Davie learned his host was going to kill him he snuck up behind him and yelled BOO. Jonathan spent two months looking for a key to the front door that didn't exist. Davie spent a full week trapped on an "island" with only three sides.
Davie Balfour has the principles of a paladin and the self-preservation instincts of a determined lemming. He's the living embodiment of "but that's illegal." And he has heat stroke.
Davie is neither able nor willing to play the "pretend everything's fine so he doesn't kill me a month early" game. If there's no knocker he'll kick the door and shout. If he's taken prisoner he'll tell Dracula shame on you, kidnapping people is wrong. If he sees them eating a baby he'll fight them with his fists. If the Girlies decide to eat him (he's even younger and more full of energy than Jonathan is, somehow) Dracula has no good reason to tell them no.
Davie only survives the first couple of chapters of Kidnapped! because his host won't bring himself to outright murder. Dracula has no such reservations.
Davie Balfour can not survive Castle Dracula
Unless of course Patrick Troughton is being held in the next room over

honestly who among us hasn't pushed the boundaries of medical hazard for the sake of wearing a binder just a bit longer. like when you're running from redcoats through scottish deserts after escaping a slaver ship and you have this tory acquaintance with you and you're not sure how he would react to you having naturals all of a sudden. like you might as well keep it on right

innocent Suspect of Accessory to Murder David "turn myself in" Balfour, to Lord Advocate Prestongrange: Hi, you "invited" me, I'm here. Here's a letter of introduction to show I'm legit and definitely not a criminal
L.A. Prestongrange: who TF are you; I've never seen you before in my life
David "dumbass" Balfour: yes but you've really wanted to see me, you've made public announcements!
L.A. Prestongrange: give me a hint; I'm not a mind-reader!
David "smartass" Balfour: if I wasn't so serious right now, I could say that you owe me £200
L.A. Prestongrange: excuse me?
David "I'm so funny" Balfour: in reward money for my capture

David, so exhausted that he can't stand up, make himself stop smiling, or even sleep, seeing Alan look concerned: oh no are you mad at me

OK cover your ears if you haven’t read Kidnapped and are going to, but also there are no spoilers in this so don’t bother.
Years ago I paged through a friend’s copy and it had an introduction (or possibly afterword) which contained, among other things, an identification of an existing tune that would work with the given words of Alan’s song (I don’t think it was claimed that RLS actually intended to reference this tune, just that it would work).
I would love to include this in Kidnapped Weekly but I cannot find which edition it was. I am going through OpenLibrary right now but, like, that’s not everything. If this rings a bell, even if you only vaguely remember what the book looked like, please give me any leads you have!
