Welp, this is where I leave y’all: with the obligatory Pets of WeThePeopleDC pic. These turkeys are @mariusanddanny, my two rescue cats from local groups @kingstreetcats and @homewardtrailsrescue. Being a cat mom? Best decision of my life so far (yes, even more than the moto). The book? @elspethbeard ‘s memoir about her ‘round the world motorcycle journey (nope, I can’t leave motos behind even for a moment). I wasn’t sure how today would go - Had this been a weekday, you might’ve seen more of my work life (grants and science research); or if I’d had more plans, maybe met more of the individual characters that inhabit my corners of the city. But, really, sometimes it’s best to just have a day where you do your favorite things and go to your favorite places and just enjoy it and remember why you love them. THE Reward!! 5 months, more treats than I can recall, play and patience. This was an incredible moment as a first time fosterer. Milly is still not there yet but Milton has learned the power of scratches! The two are eligible for adoption as a bonded pair and very sweet. One little angel 😇 tucked in with his badger for a nap after a bath. Today was a good day for Oshie as far as his dry FIP symptoms go. Tiny fighter that he is, it made me proud to know him. 🥊😼🥊 And then, there's his brother Eller, ensuring we can still smile and laugh. This is Oshie, one of our current foster cats. We welcomed him and his brother in June at 1.5 months old. He was sweet, brave and had a little sneeze. Over the months with us, he'd continue to be brave and sweet but never entirely well. . Last week we learned he might have Feline Infectious Peritonitis or FIP. Sadly, this disease is fatal in both wet and dry forms and a possible treatment is going through FDA approval. For now, we'll make Oshie comfortable, warm and loved until he's ready to rest. . This is a devastating disease that strikes very young and otherwise healthy cats. Lethargy, anemia, jaundice, inflammation, fever and organ fluid buildup are just a few of the symptoms. . Until a cure is found, making life comfortable for these little fighters is all that can be done. So please, hug your cats, donate pet food to food banks if possible and support research to help our fuzzy friends. .
