I'm writing an analysis of gender performativity in The Silence of the Lambs for my gender and sexuality class and in the course of my research I have encountered so many bad takes!! I can't not say anything so I've come to Tumblr to rant.
The most common criticism I see is that the ending of "Hannibal" discredits, undoes, or diminishes Clarice's feminism, autonomy, or power, or that it ruins the message of SOTL. That indicates a complete misunderstanding of Clarice and the point of the books! The point of "Hannibal" is to show that it does not matter how amazing, powerful, or how much of a feminist you are: if you are a woman in a career, especially a federal career, the system is designed to put you down and keep you quiet. I think there is nothing more she could have done and nothing she could have done differently to prevent her disgrace. When the system is set up to put men in power and keep them in power, your talent and integrity do not matter if they decide they don't want/need you anymore. There is nothing she can do to prevent the label of "female officer" from haunting her credibility. Even Crawford, who respects her and fights for her, sees her with the caveat of "woman." The one man who does not consider her gender any sort of detriment or a reason to treat her differently is Hannibal Lecter. They have genuine mutual respect. When she chose to be with him, she chose respect, love, and comfort over a life of fighting to be recognized, respected, or listened to. Just as much as it is respectable for women to fight for their right to be recognized in their careers, we must also recognize that that fight should not need to exist in the first place. So, why should there be any shame about choosing not to fight that fight anymore? She spent years in an uphill battle, and she probably never would have escaped it (to no fault of her own!). The ending of "Hannibal" is Clarice raising a middle finger to the system, the FBI, misogyny, and the patriarchy by recognizing that she deserves unconditional love and respect and that the system she fought so hard for was, in fact, completely undeserving of her talent or presence. Her decision is powerful and empowered!
"She was brainwashed!" she literally wasn't. Hannibal tried that (I believe because he was so unfamiliar with the idea of love or family that he didn't know how to understand Clarice outside of the lens of Mischa) but he was unsuccessful. If she was able to resist his efforts of brainwashing while in an altered state she certainly had the strength of mind to make her own decisions. Her decision was not impulsive. Also, I think it serves as a testament to her influence and power over him. She gained control of the situation and he didn't resist that. Ultimately, Clarice chose to spend the rest of her life with the one man who ever truly saw her as more than just a woman, who admired her intellect, and who respected her enough to challenge her. That is not weak, submissive, or misogynistic. Quite the opposite. She chose to leave behind the life she put years of effort into building (because she knew it would be fruitless) in favor of being finally honored and appreciated. That takes courage! She knew her worth, and she knew the FBI didn't deserve her.
Also, anyone who paid any attention to the books saw the romantic tension throughout the story. It didn't come out of nowhere. She really just needed an opportunity or an excuse to be with him, and she was finally presented with it.
I think reading the ending to "Hannibal" as anything other than empowering is a mischaracterization of both Clarice and Hannibal and shows a lack of understanding of the message of the books. I think it reflects a shallow understanding of not only the books, but of how feminism operates IRL (especially during the 80s/90s).
I also must give the disclaimer that I do not think these books are epitomes of feminism or representation. The transmisogyny, racism, queerphobia, etc., are obviously inexcusable. Just because I interpret their message as a story of caution about how misogyny operates, and how it is respectable to choose a path that does not work within that system, does not mean I agree with everything presented in them or any of their harmful rhetorics or stereotypes. I have a STRONG love/hate relationship with these stories and I don't ever mean to undersell the "hate" part of that lol.

also while I’m on the topic of dark blue kiss- I was devastated to learn that petekao are apparently very polarizing bc of pete’s whole djjdjdjdjdjdjd toxic jealousy thing
bc ok yes fine ymmv everyone’s opinions are #valid blah blah blah but when I see people say this and then say kao deserves better I just like… you do realize kao is horny about it right?? like why do you hate kao. kao does not WANT anyone other than pete’s possessive insanity bc he finds it hot. kao EXPLICITLY finds pete’s possessiveness hot you CANNOT take this away from him it is 100% textual he literally tells pete to his face he’s afraid of pete one day NOT being a deranged jealous possessive lunatic about him bc he loves it THAT much and then pete says he’s going to bite his neck and they have a nice horny time about it
like kao had a chance to go out with a nice normal polite man in kiss me again and he was COMPLETELY turned off like it was NOT hot to him…. let him have his insane husband it’s what he WANTS
(also they’re perfect which should also be taken into account tyfyt)
(I love petekao)

You know, on a fundamental level I understand that the point of fandom and individual interpretation of art is that not everyone is going to agree on shit and that is okay. I don't ever want to intrude on someone's else harmless fun just like I don't want them to mess with mine.
But there's something that peeves me so much about when Lucifer is portrayed as "innocent" or that he is amazed by sex in any way. Like, touch starved, affection starved, getting a little overwhelmed because something was that good and it was a long time since he could do it? Okay, I can see that.
But I fucking refuse to believe that the man who cucked the first man twice and casually throw it to that guy's face during a battle, while doing a clearly "I ate her up like a fucking feast" gesture, isn't entirely comfortable with sex AND hasn't tried almost every kink known to mankind at least once. You cannot fucking tell me that same man would then blush like crazy and not know what to do when a erection is nearby. That does not compute for me.
It's not even the sub or dom topic. I HC him as preferably dom/top that can switch for the comfort of his partner because my king is giving like that, but a sub/bottom absolutely can have initiative still.
Like, I am not about to rain on anyone's parade because fuck that, but also like... the conflagration of tiny= inexperienced with sex peeves me because Lucifer is finally the representation of a short king that can and WILL fuck, and I would like to see that represented more often.

Hmmm I do enjoy the large amounts of feral toxic and obsessive violence flavors of durgetash around but its not my preference, like. I crave the 'horrible awful worst people youve ever met are soft for (ONLY) eachother' dynamic. What if, given the opportunity, they really WOULD rule together side by side, and they really do secretly and shamefully yearn for that comfort together. What if they almost indulge in it sometimes. AAAAAAAAAA
I really love the star-crossed lovers, forbidden romance, mutual yearning, tragedy of the only person to ever know you, and even openly like you being a temporary co-conspirator but ultimately your sworn enemy you you know you must kill.
Maybe it's just circumstantial. Maybe in another life you really would have hated him, or worse, had no feeling towards him either way at all, but that's not your reality. Your reality is that he's the ONLY ONE that offers you a painful glimpse of normalcy. Or as close to normal as someone like YOU could get. And it's so tempting (comforting even? Is that comfort?) That you can't ignore it. No matter how much guilt and shame it brings, no matter how much fear you hold towards your Father. You can control your urges, but not this? This feeling, this longing is stronger than even your deepest nature as child of Bhaal, so much so that you can't control it. So you ask for forgiveness instead. With promises that in the end, the result will be the same. You will kill him all the same. He will die at your hand, before only you, yourself.
You justify it this way. To the temple. To Father. To yourself.
Death is the only way this could end anyway. Because could you really go on living the way it was before? Before being known, accepted, liked as you were?

i'm sure it's been said but i feel like both Raxtus and Ronodin can be argued as "the only gay kid in the family and consequently shunned/rejected" and it's like. so weird bc Mull is so Mormon he'd probably rather eat his shorts than even acknowledge the possible existence of gays but
i mean. Raxtus literally has a fairy form. he's a fairy dragon.
Ronodin was just emo lol
and they both get so thoroughly rejected and sidelined by their families their whole lives and it turns Raxtus into an awkward but basically decent guy who runs back to the approval of his family once he's performed masculinity/violence enough to be accepted, only to then realize that he's basically just being used and still not fully trusted/accepted and having to betray them to save his real friends
(who sadly are probably actually homophobic but that's ok bc they're not dragon-phobic so that works out for him)
while Ronodin's like "fuck it. chaos and murder then!" and can you really blame him? he spent his entire life trying to conform to the "right" (in this case, Light) way of life, started spending time with the outgroup and learned to question things, then was told he was "too corrupt" to remain in his home
like. the symbolism is right there.
it's so funny, because sure Raxtus isn't a bad guy, but Ronodin definitely is and he pretty much gets sent to a type of hell at the end of Dragonwatch
and while Raxtus gets kind of a happy ending, like, him becoming an effective killer in a war and being accepted by his dad for being Good At Murder in the first Fablehaven series is presented as a happy ending. if Celebrant didn't wind up being the main villain for Dragonwatch, that probably would've been the end of it! gay kid learns how to soldier and is finally accepted by his homophobic family bc he's finally aggressive enough for them to love him
(i mean i have MANY issues with Celebrant being the main villain later and the reasons he's framed as bad but like. that's a separate rant lol)
the queer reading is right there. but also it's very bad and you can tell completely unintentional. or at the very least highly repressed. idk man i don't look into Mull as a personal individual bc i doubt i'll like what i see and i don't care that much but Dragonwatch was SO MUCH MORE MORMON than Fablehaven already was and it's so weird, seeing the fingerprints of it all over.
i feel like he either has a new editor or he's been doing this for long enough and sold enough books that he has the clout to veto changes made by editors or SOMETHING, bc i feel like? he's gotten worse?? and more unfiltered?? that or something happened and he's like. even more religious than before or something idk
like fablehaven was just kinda generic/bland fantasy with some fun ideas for magic items/powers/one sentence character premises, with just a hint of sus Mormon ideology, and then Dragonwatch just went. Full Mormon.
but then there's somehow even more weirdly queer shit. like. he's repressing so hard he's approaching queer from the other side??
idk man i wish this deeply mediocre man's writing wasn't a formative piece of middle school reading, leading to me still giving more of a shit than i really should over questionable children's literature now

I’m having so many thoughts about corruption/teaching with Welt I cannot cope. I just know he’d be so agonisingly slow and patient and unflappable while showing you how it’s done, while in his own head marvelling at how soft and warm and shy you are and how determined he is to make you scream his name-
I’m fine. (Is not fine)
you are so right, anon. just something about a patient man willing to wait, to guide you slowly through everything, to make sure that what he teaches you is nothing but pleasure . . . until you can’t think straight, until all you know is his voice and gentle murmurs and praise of how well you’re doing, that’s right - and to think he is doing it out of the goodness of his heart, indulging you in your little crush - when the truth is that welt has been imagining what you’d look like at his mercy from the moment you stepped foot on the express.

I see a lot about how wx do not fall into the bl stereotype but mxywwx is more delicate has weaker body is shorter basically like every other twink who bottoms you see in madia. How do they not fall in those stereotypes in wwx second life ? Even in wwx original body they still would fall into it ( minus wwx being 2cm shorter) and theirs nothing wrong with that but why call something subversive when it isn’t, I am truly asking this honestly
I’ll say that personally, I have never been able to look at someone and spot an inch difference in their height, let alone two centimeters, to say that this is a big deal (and fan art drawing them with a foot height difference does not mean that’s how they canonically look). I don’t even remember their heights being mentioned or highlighted in the texts, just adaptations and fandom (the last one from mxtx herself saying the heights of all her main couples), so that seems like a fandom obsession, not a trait of the book.
Also, when has Wei Wuxian been weaker than Lan Wangji??? Definitely not in his original body where he had a golden core above even Lan Wangji’s level at 15, but even in Mo Xuanyu’s body which may be considered physically weaker (due to mistreatment, malnutrition, and a weaker core), but 1) that doesn’t mean he’ll always be so post-canon, especially as they still nighthunt together, 2) Lan Wangji is also described as being delicate multiple times in the text, and 3) wwx is still terrifyingly powerful enough that other cultivators will not make a move on him.
Now I see these as subversions because while the descriptions gifted (by wwx) to lwj portray him as the “feminine”/delicate partner, which he may be in some cases, he’s still the top. Wwx too, despite being the bottom and playing the helpless maiden to tease lwj, is THE most powerful man in the cultivation world, whether in his original body or mxy’s. Both of them are equal to each other, even as wwx pretends to be the weak and helpless partner of the two.
The thing about trope subversion is you actually have to include the trope you want to subvert, and this is how mxtx chose to do this in mdzs. Minus the height stuff since again, don’t think that was ever relevant in the text. However, if you don’t see these as subversions, maybe your criticism lies in how they don’t work for you and why.

todd in the shadow's video on james 'i hate the truth almost as much as i hate women' somerton made all of my sympathy for the ppl who got duped by somerton completely evaporate
the fact that this man's extreme misogyny went unchecked for so long clearly shows that either his fanbase agrees with his opinions about women or simply considers misogyny not a big enough issue to make them stop watching
thousands, sometimes MILLIONS, of views on somerton's videos = thousands, sometimes MILLIONS, of ppl influenced by his hatred disguised under the thin sheet of 'progressiveness' = continued normalization of misogyny in queer and 'progressive' spaces

the worst thing about social media is having to see 14yos' opinions on adult fiction. the second worst thing is seeing adults who have the exact same opinions.

I made the mistake of scrolling the dash last night, hoping to re-engage my Loki fandom feels, only to be reminded of why I've more or less quit this fandom - which, for the record, is bc I don't know if it's purity culture or "woke" culture or just "for the love of god, I'm begging you to touch grass" culture, but I'd like to engage with my blorbo without running into posts spouting takes like "saying Loki has small, slender hands is a feminization kink (and therefore bad)." Like?? I think there's something inherently anti-genderfluidity(?) to assume that men can't have small, slender hands or that having small, slender hands is automatically a feminine trait, and also Loki does have small, slender hands, and also even if it is being written as some kind of a kink, so what? Why are we kink-shaming?
I mean, I don't know, it just seems like there are more and more and more things that are being shamed, or criticized, based on an arbitrary sense of morality that undermines fiction as a creative, explorative form of art and it's just beyond exhausting - and fucking obnoxious - at this point.

*sidles up to you* VegasPete would totally find omegaverse hot.
(re: something knotty)
...ahhh. sure? i guess? VegasPete would be into it as a kink in the same way they're into anything that feeds into their "they are intensely overwhelmingly unhealthy-if-they-were-anyone-other-than-them obsessed with each other" kink. but tbh to me an omegaverse fantasy is a lot of setup for something that would be much more easily satisfied by any of Vegas's domestic house husband ventures and doesn't play enough into Pete's preferences for long periods of intense focus (ie he'd rather Vegas whip him vs knot him imo). like. okay, going to contrast KimChay and VegasPete for a quick second, but the differences in their kinks:
KimChay possession kink vs VegasPete obsession kink: i think Kim and Chay would be delighted in being mutually claimed or referred to as the other person's +1 of any sort (esp by other people, like "why yes i AM his boyfriend/clinger/whatever 🥰"). i think Pete and Vegas want the other to be completely obsessed with them, but being specifically referred to as anything besides the other's boyfriend/husband, esp by outside people, would Get To Them.
Kim and Chay have the vibe of wrapping themselves around each other constantly. their abandonment issues lead to them being very grabby and both find a certain amount of reassurance in a "he can't get away from me" fantasy. Vegas and Pete canonically Do Not Do Well when they're forced together without a choice or option to leave, even when they want to stay with the other.
Kim and Chay would both have fun with the fantasy and story of the kink. coming up with the "rules" (for lack of a better term) of their omegaverse kink, finding "special scents" together, "building a nest", etc--all that setup is further enrichment, they would have a lot of fun making it up. VegasPete would think its a lot of work just to fuck.
and tbh think omegaverse as a kink is a ripe ground for triggers for Pete and Vegas given how poorly they react to any sort of dehumanization (call one of them alpha/omega and see them spiral) and Vegas esp given Gun's whole...macho alpha guy bullshit.
i'm sorry nonny, i don't mean to step on your fun and feel free to ignore me if you want to run with the idea! but i personally don't see omegaverse-as-a-kink satisfying any of Vegas or Pete's kinks, and definitely not in the way omegaverse-as-a-kink could give Kim and Chay an outlet to indulge in a bunch of their kinks at once.
