Something I appreciate in the Dishonored fandom is that some other fandoms are filled with too much ship purity culture where you get guff if you enjoy or even just respect a problematic ship™ (which may or may not actually be "problematic" in some way), and it's annoying and makes for a more hostile fandom environment from people on all sides imo, and then you have Dishonored fans who went "yes we will ship the sad wet rat dad with the man who killed his wife" and that is extremely valid of them tbqfh

i wrote nearly 7000 words in three days about corvo and daud falling in love again and i WILL make it everyone else's problem soon
in the meantime, enjoy this:
It began, as all ruin did, with exceptions.
“Montgomery is right. You should keep the hounds.”
“Attano,” said Daud. And Corvo smiled.
When they debated how to angle themselves at a target, when they argued, there was a way that Daud steered Corvo away from fashioning himself into a weapon, a tool, that Billie didn't recognise.
When Corvo hung his head and refused to admit he was tired, Daud let him go for a while to sit with Emily. And Corvo came back on his own before Daud could drag him, because Corvo was at his side before he thought to have need of him. It was what Corvo’d trained to do, to be. At someone’s shoulder, where he was needed.
It was the bond, Billie told herself. Never mind the blood and guilt.
Only, Daud had never trained to say anybody’s name like that. To speak so quietly, so tender: “Bodyguard.” Corvo came to him in the dead of night; couldn’t sleep, couldn’t see the Void for the nightmares in his eyes.
Billie heard it, keeping watch, and knew it wasn’t the bond at all.

The non-lethal takedowns in Dishonored are ways for Corvo to force the people who took away Jessamine to suffer, to live with that pain and grief and horror just like he and Emily and the entire city will have to live with it. He refuses to give them the easy way out, forcing them to lie in the beds they made and feel every single consequence of their actions.
Him sparing Daud is different because it's simultaneously an act of cruelty ("you're already making yourself suffer and nothing I can do would be worse than your own guilt") and an act of genuine mercy ("you already feel remorse, listen to that part of yourself and be better") and I think about it constantly.
