🥰 To Say Nothing of the Dog: Or How We Found the Bishop's Bird Stump at Last (Oxford Time Travel #2) (Connie Willis, author; Stephen Crossley, narrator) - it's been 20 yrs since I read this; a mash up of the vibes of Victorian comic literature, '30s golden age detective fiction and PG Wodehouse into a delightful time travel adventure romp. It does feel a little dated in some of the characterizations, but sadly kotowing to the narcissistic, abusive, imperious, unreasonable, reality-denying billionaire on the off chance she might donate some money and everyone pretending her behavior is 'whimsical' and 'hilarious' and not absolutely toxic feels unfortunately super fucking contemporary (but shout out to naming her Lady Shrapnell - absolute *chef's kiss* to that Wilde allusion)

it wasn't until ashara was in adulthood that she discovered the reason she'd been adopted by the martells. assumed that she'd been abandoned by her biological parents due to the active war or that they'd been killed, a chance encounter while in the stormlands bordering dorne found her staring into a mirror — one that reflected what she could look like in the distant future. never one to not question things, ashara inquired after the woman to learn that not only was she her mother, her birth was the result of an affair that she'd had with one of the knights of her house. due to her previous standing, a westerling, the connections that eleyna had allowed for someone to beseech for a good upbringing as far away from the westerlands as possible. it was by chance that the ruling prince and princess had been struggling to conceive a child of their own, resulting in ashara being taken in and raised not just as their own, but as their first born and future ruler of dorne. named after the companion of princess nymeria martell with prayers she would not suffer a sad fate as she had.

her upbringing with the martells crafted a political adept mind, one that was always more concerned with having good relationships rather than making enemies even if it meant she had to play both sides of the fence — an act that ashara soon grew to despise. it seemed all her father knew how to do was to kotow despite dorne refusing to bend. the death of their aunt seemed like a blow he didn't know how to recover from, and distance between she and her father grew. still interested in the ongoings of dorne itself, ashara focused on trying to keep close relations with their vassal houses and building dorne to new strength ; putting focus on their being more to call for a standing army, trying to make their borders stronger, and forming political marriage alliances.

ashara has two paramours and three children - twins that are to come after her in ruling, and one but of five years that she hopes will never come to know unrest. her father met his grandchild while on his death bed, a kiss given on his forehead and secret whispered to ashara that she has chosen to fulfill as was his wish.
