The true story of geology slowly adopting the concept of continental drift, despite the rifts (pun very much intended) the theory drove into the scientific community over decades. As the adoption of the theory took part as older geologists who eschewed the theory died off, the film, rather than being a rollicking adventure in far flung volcanic regions, is instead a series of lectures and arguments at academic conferences, while the major players are charted on screen to mimic the shift in tectonic plates so that the idea forms under other plates (theories) which eventually slide off and are subducted.

Then Cam tells her auntie about her volcano that she built with her dad’s help. “We labeled everything and even have a 3D diagram about how some volcanos form through plate tectonics*.” Cam says excitedly, and Iseul smiles as she looks at both nieces, her eyes lighting up as Cam tells her more about her volcano before Cece chimes in with the good grade she got on her English essay.

Iseul then shows them to their room so they can rest, and they put away their weekend suitcase to unpack tomorrow. Cam grumbles about having to share a room and bed with Cece, but accepts it since she’s sleepy as heck. “Don't fart too much, Cee.” She says, and Cece laughs. “Shut up, Cammy.” She says. “I’m glad we’re here though.” Cam whispers, and Cece nods. “Yeah. I know I’m too old for it, but I still love spending time with auntie Is and Megs.” Cece admits. “You’re never too old for it.” Cam retorts, but she smiles at her sister. They whisper back and forth about school and tv shows and favorite singers, before eventually drifting off to sleep.

this is probably a nuclear take, but i genuinely believe that disinformative fear-mongering about things that are germane to women's safety does a hell of a lot more damage than a lot of things that we typically talk about when misogyny pops up. maybe i'm being a bit dramatic about it, but the fear it stokes never produces any good results. & i don't think it's outrageous to connect this to phenomena like "pastel qanon" – you could make a very convincing case that this is the bedrock for these sorts of things, because this specific type of disinformation has a really long history.

if i can think of one teenage experience that always used to bother me, it would be getting sent those stories about fake cop cars and human traffickers at sears and illegitimate perfume sales in parking lots by my mom, googling the thing the story is talking about to see if it's real, and then replying to her with the snopes article saying it was fake with "stop sending me stuff like this". and she'd reply with something about her "just looking out for [me]", and i'd quip back with "how is this helpful?" – these conversations never went well. but, like, some of these hoaxes are more than 20 years old, and they get repackaged, and recycled uncritically time after time. before trump's "fake news" entered the dialogue, this was the fake news, and it was always framed as a women's public service announcement.

discussing this in the contemporary era presents a challenge in that there's friction between this very real problem, and how discussing it can come off as dismissive amidst pop-feminist mantras that insist on giving stories involving this sort of subject matter the benefit of the doubt. it's a broad and complicated question – how do we look at the "believe women" philosophy, but in a way that controls for the dishonesty we all know exists? – and i think a good place to start with brainstorming answers is in analyzing this epidemic. but what's odd about it is that i haven't seen any editorial, study, profile, anything, that focuses on this. i searched "internet hoaxes women's safety" to make sure it wasn't a situation of "this happens and you missed it" – the results all were about sweetheart scams and one study concerning disinformation about feminism specifically. not this. it's strange to me.

but something about fake stories that are designed to make women feel unsafe all the time, no mercy, no bathroom breaks – it's so nefarious to me. best case scenario for internalizing this stuff is irrational edginess that you don't even know is irrational, worst case scenario is becoming a conspiracy theorist. both require pushing you down to something worse out of threat. subduction. an invisible gun to your head. the cycle continues when someone really effected by this stuff shares their own viral story because someone was acting kind of weird at target. women manipulating other women while not at all knowing they're being manipulative. it's endless. it's exhausting. it's predatory. by the time a fact checker gets around to debunking this shit, it's been spread to countless people and the damage is already done.

if i were more donkey brained, i'd speculate that there's a shady back-room of assholes who concluded that the most effective way to control women was to manipulate them into enforcing control amongst themselves or one another. in reality, it's a thing lurching on out of pure cultural inertia, and tiktok is a new tinderbox for the eternal flame to rip through. doesn't mean it bothers me any less.

i just–we can read the trees, they tell us of environmental changes they experience, even long after they are gone. we can read the stone, each layer tells us something of ancient local geography. we can read the mountains, the caves, see the imprints of life in the earth. we can read the oceans, see the way they flow. we can read the ice and the amber, the preserved pieces of nature they hold. we can read the very atoms that make up our world! they can tell us how long something has been around! the lava flows from volcanic eruptions, the contents of an animal's stomach, the erosion of a cliff face, they tell us the story of natural history. i think it is the most beautiful, wonderful, breathtaking thing we have ever done, ever discovered, ever invented. we can read our planet.
