Ayden-Grifton defeats Carrboro in five-set thriller, advances to Eastern Regionals

Ayden-Grifton rushes the field in celebration after a five-set win over Carrboro Saturday in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 2A state playoffs.

Ayden-Grifton's 2019 playoff run is coming full circle from the previous two years.

The Chargers defeated Carrboro Saturday in a 25-22, 13-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-10 thriller in the fourth round of the NCHSAA state playoffs. Ayden-Grifton (21-5) lost to the Jaguars in straight sets in the fourth round two years ago, but found the resolve to come back Saturday.

Ayden-Grifton now faces top-seeded Wheatmore on the the road Tuesday at 6 p.m., the same team who bested the Chargers in the fourth round last year.

“I’m just so excited,” Chargers coach Linda Bryant said. “These girls really deserved this, they work hard all year and (during) that last timeout I said ‘we play with our hearts — you can do this, just stay focused and make the pass. I believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.’ They went out there, played and did it.”

Emily Dykes, who registered a team-high 20 kills, is one of three Chargers who have played all three years during the team’s best run and said the resolve was instrumental in the victory.

“The mentality of getting to the fifth round helped us, and we didn’t want this to be our last game,” Dykes said. “This was amazing because it was Carrboro and we had been blown out by them two years ago.”

The teams split the game's first six points before an Isabella Olson kill sparked a 4-0 run for Carrboro (23-4). The Chargers fought back, eventually using a 4-0 spurt of their own — aided by two Dykes kills, one from Alexia Bryant and an Abby Langemann service ace — to take a 15-12 advantage they would never relinquish. Carrboro would get within 22-21, but Ayden-Grifton kept the Jaguars at bay.

In the second set, the Chargers went up 3-0, highlighted by a Holly Cannon ace, but the Jaguars scored the next four to establish control. Aale’Yah Garris’ block put Ayden-Grifton ahead 9-8, but Carrboro scored the next five points, including consecutive service aces from Olson. Ayden-Grifton wouldn’t recover as Carrboro closed the set out with eight straight points.

The Jaguars kept the momentum in the third set with a pair of Evie Newall kills and a Tymber Harris ace helping to spark a 4-0 start, but two Dykes kills and a Cannon ace were part of five unanswered from the Chargers. Ayden-Grifton went up 12-8, but Carrboro turned the tied with an 8-0 run, including a Taylor Gwynne ace. Although Dykes’ kill brought Ayden-Grifton within 20-18, Carrboro finished the set off on a 5-1 run — punctuated by a Carson Overbeck spike — to push Ayden-Grifton to the brink.

The Chargers came out with a flurry with a 4-0 start in the fourth set, but momentum would swing often in a stanza featuring 11 ties and 10 lead changes. Carrboro took a 9-6 lead before Ayden-Grifton scored another four unanswered, and neither team would go up by more than two from there. Becca Gwynne’s kill had Carrboro ahead 23-22, but Garris countered with a kill and Ayden-Grifton closed out the set.

The Chargers had all momentum in the fifth set as three kills from Dykes and one from Bryant sparked a 6-2 start. The Jaguars came roaring back, tying the game at 7 after a Kyndall Schmoock kill and getting the lead after Trixie MacNeill’s subsequent block. Tied at 10, Garris’ kill sparked the game-ending 5-0 run and sent Ayden-Grifton to its first Eastern Regional.

“We don’t want to lose and we really have the heart to win it all,” Garris said. “This is the first time we’ve ever been here and we’re really excited about this opportunity.”

Alexia Bryant shared similar sentiments.

“We’re really proud to get this win, but we want to do more than just make it past the fourth round,” Bryant said. “We’re looking toward getting past this next round and then trying to win a championship — winning today was another great goal we were able to check off.”

Carrboro coach Steve Scanga said his team played hard throughout, but ran into a very tough squad.

“They gave their all and I have no qualms about how they played,” Scanga said. “Ayden-Grifton played well and we couldn’t stop their hitter Emily (Dykes), who also served very well. All-around, they did an excellent job — we did our best to get them out of their system, and when we did we were successful.”

EC Softball Celebrates Senior Day!

The Lady Lions took on Erskine College for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader for our Lady Lions Senior Day. This brings the Lions overall stats to 15-25 and 8-10 in conference. 

Emmanuel College Lions watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 9-1 loss to Erskine College on Tuesday. Erskine College scored on a walk by Shi Cain, a stolen base by Cain, and a home run by Katie Hunter in the first inning. The Emmanuel College Lions struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Erskine College, giving up nine runs. Erskine College got on the board in the first inning when Cain drew a walk, scoring one run. Hannah Houge led things off on the rubber for Erskine College. The pitcher allowed seven hits and one run over five innings, striking out six. Kaitlyn Pickens led things off in the circle for Emmanuel College Lions , but after the quick lead by the Fleet, Dani Fairey came in as the relief. The lefty went one and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on three hits. Kaleigh Fowler threw three and a third innings out of the bullpen. Brighton Harder led Emmanuel College Lions with two hits in three at bats.  Emmanuel College Lions was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Kya Santiago had the most chances in the field with three. Emmanuel College Lions had all cylinders firing on offense on Tuesday, winning big over the #1 in the Conference. Erskine College got on the board in the first inning. Erskine College scored two runs when Kyndall Chandler singled. In the bottom of the first inning, Lady Lions tied things up at two. With an error from Erskine's short stop and catcher. After Erskine College scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Emmanuel College Lions answered with two of their own. Erskine College scored when Shi Cain homered on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.  Emmanuel College Lions then answered when Kya Santiago singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and Ally Harris grounded out, scoring one run. Emmanuel College Lions pulled away for good with four runs in the second inning. In the second Kya Santiago doubled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run and Emmanuel College Lions scored on a stolen base during Ally Harris's at bat. Then Ally Harris singled, driving in one. Sydney Blackmon got the win for Emmanuel College Lions . The lefthander surrendered four runs on five hits over six innings, striking out one. Chloe Hamilton took the loss for Erskine College. The bulldog lasted four and a third innings, allowing ten hits and nine runs while striking out four. Emmanuel College Lions scattered 14 hits in the game. Kya Santiago, Isabelle Petty, Lily Shelton, Ally Harris, and Brighton Harder each racked up multiple hits for Emmanuel College Lions.  Isabelle Petty and Kya Santiago each collected three hits to lead Emmanuel College Lions. Emmanuel College Lions didn't commit a single error in the field. Abbey Sims had the most chances in the field with five.
