Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Algo así, básicamente jaja.
Y ya, eso es todo :))

"treehouse" for Julie!!!!!!!
- 🐸
Thank you for the prompt, my love! Hope you enjoy :)
This takes place in my (and @sunsetcurvecuddles's) Parenting verse. All you need to know is that Trevor, Ray, and Rose co-parented Julie, Carlos, and Carrie for a few years before Trevor bought his mansion and decided to raise his daughter on his own (and then fell out with the Molinas a few years later when they found out he stole all his songs).
Send me prompts!
In fifth grade, Carrie’s dad makes her move into this huge scary mansion above Malibu beach with a security gate and a million rooms and no Julie.
Two months later, he buys a helicopter with his face on it.
“Mami says he’s having a mid-life crisis,” Julie informs Carrie politely as they stand in the driveway watching the guys Trevor hired to build a landing pad on his roof. Julie’s not entirely sure what a mid-life crisis is, but her mami seemed a hundred percent convinced that Carrie’s dad was having one.
Carrie hmmphs, arms crossed over her chest. She’s been understandably annoyed by most choices her dad’s made since the move, including the choice to move at all, so it only makes sense that she wouldn’t be happy about this one either.
But she doesn’t voice any complaints, just taps her foot thoughtfully against the asphalt and then says, “I have an idea.”
Julie’s eyes go a little wide. “An idea or an idea?”
Carrie has great ideas, usually. It was her idea for Julie to start calling her dad “Trevor” instead of “Daddy” because “people are mean, and it makes you sound babyish, and he’s not even your real dad anyway.” It was her idea to take Carlos trick-or-treating with them last Halloween because they were totally too old for it— “ten-year-olds are basically teenagers”— but if they walked around the neighborhood with a six-year-old dressed as a can of tomato soup (also Carrie’s idea), they could still nab all the good candy. It was her idea to boycott moving away, and it didn’t really work, but it got Trevor to buy her a bunch of new clothes, and Mami and Papi always serve ice cream now whenever she comes over for dinner.
Carrie’s ideas are great. But her ideas are what got Julie grounded for hiding bacalao under her bed, and they’re what made Principal Martinez call Papi at work to ask if Julie had a secret twin, and they’re how Flynn broke her arm, twice.
Carrie gives her a look, and Julie has the sinking feeling that this is going to be one of her ideas.
***
Three weeks later, Papi pulls his car around Trevor Wilson’s big circular driveway and leans out the front windshield with a sigh. “Ay Dios mío. He really went through with it, huh?”
Julie cranes her neck to see what he’s looking at from the backseat. “Oh, whoa.”
Rising up from the roof of Trevor’s east wing, atop the landing pad the construction guys finished last week, is a helicopter with Trevor Wilson’s face plastered on the side. “Can I—?”
“No,” her dad says because she can finish —ride in it?. Then, he pauses and amends, “Not without your Mami or I with you, and a certified pilot behind the wheel.”
Julie resists the urge to roll her eyes. “Okay, Dad. Can I go see Carrie now?”
He unlocks the car doors. “Go play, sweetie. Ask Daddy to come out and talk to me for a minute.”
Julie flinches. Her parents still haven’t quite gotten the “she’s not a baby and his name is Trevor” memo yet, but she doesn’t feel like pushing it. “Okay. Bye, Papi, love you!”
She hops out of the car and closes the door on his response, then skips up to the imposing front entrance and stands on her tiptoes to ring the doorbell.
It’s barely chimed once when the door flies open and Carrie grabs her by the wrist. “Come on!”
After ten years, Julie knows better than to protest. “My dad wants to talk to your dad!” she still manages to pant while being tugged through the mansion halls at a run.
“Dad!” Carrie shouts without breaking her stride. “Julie’s here, Mr. Molina’s in the driveway and he wants to talk to you!”
Julie doesn’t really understand why she can call Carrie’s dad “Trevor,” but Carrie can’t call her dad “Ray,” and when she tried to ask once, Carrie just gave her a look like she was stupid and refused to explain.
“Where are we going?” Julie says, just as Carrie finally pulls her to a stop at the top of a long set of stairs.
Carrie grins at her— the same way she grinned before instructing Flynn on how to work her homemade parachute. It’s a rare, dangerous look on Carrie Wilson’s face.
Carrie pushes open a door and leads Julie onto the helicopter landing pad.
Julie flinches back as the wind whips at her face. “Carrie? What—?” “Come on, Juliebean!” Carrie calls over her shoulder as she confidently crosses the roof and yanks open the helicopter door.
Julie follows more carefully, making sure not to get too close to either edge, but hesitates before climbing in next to Carrie. “My dad says I’m not allowed to get in this thing.”
Carrie rolls her eyes. “Don’t be such a baby, Julie! It’s not like we're gonna fly it! Think of it like a big, really cool treehouse.”
A treehouse. Yeah, okay. Julie can handle that.
After all, Carrie’s practically her sister. Julie’s never gonna stop following her lead.

*screams up at the sky* FFS Paul Dano isn’t even that good in the movie! His performance stuck out to me as a weak point even before I had all the baggage of this fandom slowly eroding just a bit more of my faith in humanity. I’m sure he’s a nice dude and it’s totally not his fault fandom is crushing on his terrorist character, but he was good in one thing once and is now totally overrated as an actor. In his scene with Batman he’s acting like the most cliché and over-the-top idea of cRAzY, he just can’t not overdo it.
The only reason it’s not a huge complaint for me is because it maybe only serves the movie better if he doesn’t have the least bit of an interesting presence and is just totally unappealing to watch. They tried to make the character as impossible to like and glorify as they could, he’s supposed to be unappealing and a wholly unflattering mirror for Batman to have to see something of himself in. So really it’s fine if Dano makes me want to punch him in the face in that moment Martinez slams his head down on the counter and for some reason he feels like it’s good acting to flap his weird tiny mouth open like a fish and look like he’s getting hard with his eyes really really wide in case we still don’t get that he’s creepy. Sorry that even with all that, people still didn’t get the memo that the Riddler fucking sucks and that’s the point.

The Furbees Take Over!
Tumblr media
“Repeat the Furbees, ARE TAKING OVER!” Sanders yelled.
“Who’s stupid idea was it to bring them back!” I quickly scribed this down in my notebook.
-------------------------------------------------------
I kept tossing and turning. I turned over to check my phone: 3:42am. I tried closing my eyes. Nothing. I tossed my cover to the side and opened my eyes and got dressed for the gym.
I’m a freelance journalist. I’m my own boss but I still need work. I write about pop culture; music, fashion, ideals, toys/games, books. Anything that the young generation is into. I also cover college/university politics(protests). Journalism is not like how it used to be. Everyone within my career is writing about pop culture better.
]
I’m currently looking for work. My partner or should I say editor found my recent piece not as good as when he first met me; Micheal Gypsy, recent graduate at Columbia University with an editorial degree.  I graduated from Brown U.
I finished my workout, and drove to Dunkin’.  After Dunkin’ breakfast I made the hour drive to Fort Hope Naval Academy. Three of their men are currently being accused of destruction of poverty, grand theft auto and conspiracy to commit manslaughter with said stolen truck. Their alcohol count was triple then the legal limit for Rhode Island. It was about 7:15am when I got to the base.
Vice Admiral Charles “BBQ” Glasgow, whom I contacted through email, had just sent me an email that he was unavailable and that a Captain F. Sanders would be escorting me around the base and answering any other questions I had about the case. I got out of my car.
“Corporal Adrianna Martienz? Here for a tour and case #05-05-17-2012-26-45 OF?” No one’s called me Corporal in 6 years.
“Captain Sanders, I presume?” I can work with this.
“It’s Lieutenant Commander Saunders, but I understand the confusion. I just became a Lieutenant commander and people always seem to mispronounce my name.”
“Do I have your consent to record this interaction, Lieutenant Commander?” I asked as I opened my recording memos app.
“By Admiral Miami and myself, you Commander Martienz have both our consents to record this civilian interaction.”
“But you just acknowledge me as a Commander?” Why can’t it be just two people talking regardless of status?
“You were Commander Martinez, now you are Miss. Martiez. Lots of civilians ask for tours and try to picnics on the base but Fort Hope is still an active Navy base. Let’s make this quick. I have a meeting in 0100 hours, that’s-.” I interjected.
“10AM, I still know military time but I’m not here to talk about my army experience. I’m here to talk about the-” She cut me off.
“The 3 privates that destroyed that bar and the local convenience store, stole that truck and attempted to drive several pedestrians off the road and fought with local police.”  Fighting with police? That’s new.
“I assume, the Military Police are overseeing the investigation alongside the local PD. Is there anything you can currently share for public ears?” I knew all information was sensitive but most of the time, it came with a price, what’s hers.
“Yes, Military Police are on Fort Hope poverty but they have taken over the investigation, the local police have given everything over to the investigation.”  She’s a lieutenant commander but was she one of the good ones?
“This was a complete waste of my time. You, your superior officer or Vice Admiral Glasgow could have texted, called or emailed to not come to Fort Hope. I have no paper-.”
“Commander Martinez calmed down. The military police will make a statement once the local police have given everything a part of the investigation.”
“So you're saying the military police don’t have full control of the investigation?” So the local PD is still gathering evidence or…
“Good thing you weren’t recording that but yes… Do you still want to-.” She was cut off by her radio.
“Lieutenant Commander Sanders, we have a situation at coordinates at 41.840760 la and -71.393510 lo. We need you at the command center now!” Lt. Commander Sanders turned on heels and sprinted to the command center. I walked back to my car and opened to my police wire tapping app.
Chat about a “hostage situation going on at the Nathan Bishop Middle School. Local PD were holding down the scene and waiting for a hostage negotiator, The Local PD were between two and the new one was not in Rhode Island. I reversed out of my parking space and headed for the security checkpoint booth.
I waited for the guard to come take my car visitor pass and give back my license. I gave him the car visitor pass and as he was just about to hand me my license back…
“You were a hostage negotiator right?” She read my file.
“Yeah, a terrorist hostage negotiator but like you said, I’m retired, Lt. Commander Sanders.”
“Rhode Island just reinstated you.” as she has me a navy jacket.
—------------------------------------------------------
“Doesn’t Fort Hope have a hostage negotiator, why am I here, I’m still technically retired.” She didn’t answer. I don't have experience talking to an active school shooter.
It was 30 more minutes until we got to the soccer field of the middle school. I tried to think of what to say, Americans are not terrorists until they go against the country.
“Okay, what’s the plan for this? Do we know it’s an adult or… ?” I never talked to a kid overseas.
“We actually don’t know what the situation is but we just know that it’s at the middle school.” Lt. Commander Sanders escorted me to the mobile HQ.
“Let’s talk to this Mr. Bool, apparently his car’s trunk might have some trapped in there.” Lt. Commander Sanders walked with me.
“So you guys don’t have a warrant for his car? Do you trust me?” She looked at me confused but she nodded and we went to get Mr. Bool.
“Wait, now the military is here? I didn’t do anything.” Mr. Bool was irritated but more concerned.
“Mr. Bool can we have your permission to look inside your trunk?” Let’s see if he can trust me.
“That’s what this is about, yes you have my permission, here are my car keys.” We allowed mr. Bool to open his trunk.  Lt. Commander Sanders and I sifted through personal stuff but nothing else.
“Mr. Bool we all apologized for this terrible misassumption. This officer will take your final statement. Again I’m truly sorry.” Maybe this was a prank call by a student who got a bad grade or-.
“U-nye-boh-doo? How are you?!” shouted a voice from the back of Mr. Bool’s car.
“Someone hold Mr. Bool back!” Lt. Commander Sanders ordered.
Lt. Commander Sanders and I started searching the backseat of Mr. Bool’s car.
“Wee-tah-kah-wee-loo! Tell me a story!” Again that little voice. I saw a jacket I used the back of my hand to feel underneath the jacket and nearly broke my hand.
“Lt. Commander Sanders, it’s a Ferbee. That 90’s weird animal antmontroic.” I took it out of the car.
“That’s my daughters’, I told her not to bring it to school, so I told her to leave it in my car. She’s at school right now, at the elementary school. Her aunt works there, you can check.” Lt. Commander signaled to an officer and the officer ran back to the mobile HQ.
“SO, no country is threatened in the back of a middle school teachers’ car. Can we wrap this up?” There was no threat here.
“Yeah, sorry for dragging you down here. I owe you a drink.” Lt. Commander Sanders shut the backseat door and took off her gloves.
“I gotta decline, I don’t drink but thanks for the offer.” I was about to put the Furbee back when.
“U-nye-boh-doo! U-nye-loo-lay-doo! Hello Miss. Martinez, do you want to hear a story?” Okay I did not just hear this Furbee talk to me.
“U-nye-boh-doo Miss. Martienz. Look what we can do…” The ground started to shake. The Furbee closed its eyes and the ground kept shaking. After several moments a giant Furbee appeared from behind the high school 3 miles west of the middle school.
“U-nye-boh-doo!” The giant Furbee boomed. With eyes still closed the small Furbee in my hand translated.
“He wants to talk to you, Lt. Commander Sanders.” I looked up at Lt. Commander Sanders…
-------------------------------------------------------
“Repeat the Furbees, ARE TAKING OVER!” Sanders yelled.
“Who’s stupid idea was it to bring them back!” I quickly scribed this down in my notebook.

"The Atom Bomb" by Chloe HazelJane
Original Post On: chloehazeljane.com
2149
Lucius Abaddon was the President’s son. That was all he was and all he had ever been. From the moment his mother had died and his father had used her death as the base of his first Senate campaign—and every campaign after that—all hope of another life had been lost. So when Alec Abaddon had pushed the button to release the United States’s nukes and started a chain reaction of destruction as, in retaliation, other world leaders did the same, the fault had fallen on Lucius too. It didn’t matter that he was the one who had walked into his father’s bunker with a gun he’d taken off a Secret Service officer and shot Alec in the face with it, ending his tyrannical term. He was still the President’s son.
He took a deep breath, sucking the air in through his teeth. The air of New York City, like that of the rest of the country, was no longer as arid as it had been when he had first arrived after the bunkers had opened. Though, he supposed he should probably stop thinking of this land as the United States. It wasn’t and it never would be again. The world had already been dying from the intensity of extreme weather and pollution, and the bombs had rocked the world enough to send most of the land underwater. As far as they knew, this was the only land left. They had to assume everything else was gone because hoping anything else was true would make moving on that much harder.
The roar of the Atlantic tide was like static in his ears, as he stared out at the swirling blue-grey water. He was standing at the memorial site for the World Trade Center, the story of which had always felt like a faraway tale to him, as much history as the American Revolution was. Nearly a century and a half later, it couldn’t be much else.
“You’ve been avoiding me.” The voice coming from behind him was too familiar. It was a voice that did nothing more than remind him there was nothing he could do to stop the circle of societal destruction the world had so long been plagued with. It was and would always be one tyrant after another, regardless of intention. Callix was a fool to think otherwise.
“Yes, and I thought you had gotten the memo,” he said, turning to face Callix Martinez, leader of the New World. “It’s been years.”
Callix shrugged. “I’ve had people looking for you the entire time, Lucius, but apparently you’re good at keeping yourself hidden.” He sighed. “I want to talk. I have since the moment you left. You hardly gave me a chance to explain my plans for this country.”
Lucius stared at him. It was like looking at his father, though he and Callix looked nothing alike. Callix was young, a few years Lucius’s senior, with wild dark hair and skin a dark shade of taupe. His eyes were green as the grass was finally once again growing to be. Alec had looked much like Lucius, his hair silver and his complexion somewhere between white and brown, though the two did not share their eyes. Alec’s had been brown, but Lucius had his mother’s eyes, eyes like a glass of cognac. But it wasn’t literal appearance that made Alec and Callix mirror images of each other. Callix had noble intentions, but so had Alec, in the beginning. At least, Lucius thought so.
“Lucie—”
“Don’t call me that.” Lucius’s voice snapped like a whip, and he saw Callix’s shoulders tense. “You asked for my opinion, I gave it to you, and you ignored it. So I left. Because I won’t be associated with what you’re doing. Why can’t you just leave it at that?”
“I asked for your opinion because I value it, and yes, I didn’t agree with it but that didn’t mean I wanted you to leave,” Callix said. “I understand that you’re worried about the power dynamic, but you staying is exactly what could help keep it in check. Opposition is a good thing.”
“You say that now, but so did my father, at first,” Lucius said. “And then he started tearing down political institutions from the inside and talking about how what this country really needed was a king. He tried to create a kingdom for himself instead of doing his duty as a keeper of democracy, and your response to his failed coup is to turn what’s left of our home into an empire with you as its king. A king chosen by the people, sure, but a king all the same. Maybe it won’t be you, but someday down the line, one of your successors will become exactly the type of person that put us where we are today. I can’t support that. I won’t.”
Callix shook his head. “No, I’ll set it up in a way that won’t happen.”
“You know you can’t do that. You know that it doesn’t matter what you do. You can’t control the future.”
“You’re still mad about Rowan,” Callix said, hesitancy in his voice. “I know that’s part of this.”
Rowan. Rowan with soft skin the color of black coffee. Rowan with a laugh so deep it was like it was coming from the core of the earth itself. Rowan who somehow managed to always keep himself composed, even in the face of a literal apocalypse. Rowan who tasted like joy and honey and smelled like eucalyptus leaves. Rowan who had died defending Callix’s empire.
He felt his eyes darken. “Stop it.”
Callix did not stop it. “He believed in it, Lucius. He helped me build it. You know Rowan—”
He believed in you, Callix, not the plan. And see where that got him.”
“That’s not fair.”
“No? Because I seem to recall it being your ideas that got him killed. And not just him either.” Lucius’s chest was hot, the pit of feebly contained fire in his stomach breaking through his ribs. He couldn’t do this. He couldn’t think about his father or the idea of returning to Callix’s side as he fortified his empire’s heart in the rubble of Chicago, and he certainly couldn’t think about Rowan or anyone else he had lost in the years since his father’s third inauguration. “Why don’t we talk about Carlos?”
He knew he was off base. Carlos had been Callix’s best friend, practically his brother, and his death was far from his fault, though he blamed himself for it. He didn’t need another reminder of it. But it was what he got for bringing up Rowan.
“Fine.” Callix exhaled. “Just know you’re always welcome back at my court—my home. You’re right. Becoming your father is something I could do very easily. And nobody knows what he was like more than you. I could use your advice.”
When Lucius said nothing, Callix nodded and turned his back. Lucius wondered if he should call after him—continue their conversation or tell him he would return to Chicago with him—but he couldn’t bring himself to. To support Callix was to support empire-building, and to support empire-building was to support his father’s beliefs, something he could never allow himself to do.
But if there was one thing Callix was right about, it was that opposition was a good thing, and while he wouldn’t do it within the walls of the newly constructed Martinez Palace, opposition was something Lucius could create. He would hold the monarchy accountable. If they ever stepped out of line, he would be the atom bomb that destroyed them and took back the world. On the very ground where he stood, he would build the Abaddon Rebellion.

Mexican Wooly, Mexican Wooly (nothing canon of course, it's just an AU)
"If I had seen" (Amanda the Adventurer's AU)
Guillermo "Memo" Martinez (Wooly) was the son of immigrants who tried to cross illegally from Mexico to the US, losing their son on the way. Wooly made it across and assumed that his parents died, or that perhaps they hadn't come back to look for him
Because he was practically an orphan and no one was going to claim for him, it would be sacrificed to "pay" a construction with his soul (the same one in which Hameln operated and in which they met the entity, which promised them wealth and eternal life to bring more things, such as food, alcohol, animals, jewelry and people). Each new soul that he consumed was just his new slave and became one more sheep of his "flock".
At some point Sam Colton realizes, says "no way", takes Amanda and soon after by someone outside Hameln is exposed, including ending with the release of souls, except for Wooly, who decided to stay in this world even if he no longer regained his human appearance.
Eventually he was adopted by a couple, grew up and became a fair lawyer and caring psychologist (and of course, became Amanda's husband)
Don't worry if doesn't have sense, the point is that he's Mexican and he's so horny for Amanda, the end HAHA.

Tornadoes kill 24 in 100-mile path through Mississippi, Alabama (Washington Post) Devastating tornadoes swept through parts of Mississippi and Alabama Friday night, killing at least 24 people, injuring dozens more and wreaking severe damage. Wind gusts of up to 80 mph and hail the size of golf balls battered the state as the large twisters moved more than 100 miles, an unusually long path. They left behind destruction, reducing buildings to piles of wreckage in hard-hit areas. After overnight rescues, residents and officials were taking stock of the devastation Saturday. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said that at least four people were missing and that the death toll was expected to rise.
From Rockets to Ball Bearings, Pentagon Struggles to Feed War Machine (NYT) The Navy admiral had a blunt message for the military contractors building precision-guided missiles for his warships, submarines and planes at a moment when the United States is dispatching arms to Ukraine and preparing for the possibility of conflict with China. “Look at me. I am not forgiving the fact you’re not delivering the ordnance we need. OK?” Adm. Daryl Caudle, who is in charge of delivering weapons to most of the Navy’s East Coast-based fleet, warned contractors during an industry gathering in January. “We’re talking about war-fighting, national security, and going against a competitor here and a potential adversary that is like nothing we’ve ever seen. And we can’t dillydally around with these deliveries.” His open frustration reflects a problem that has become worryingly apparent as the Pentagon dispatches its own stocks of weapons to help Ukraine hold off Russia and Washington warily watches for signs that China might provoke a new conflict by invading Taiwan: The United States lacks the capacity to produce the arms that the nation and its allies need at a time of heightened superpower tensions. Industry consolidation, depleted manufacturing lines and supply chain issues have combined to constrain the production of basic ammunition like artillery shells while also prompting concern about building adequate reserves of more sophisticated weapons including missiles, air defense systems and counter-artillery radar.
A federal judge spoke at Stanford Law School. Chaos ensued. (NYT) Stuart Kyle Duncan—a federal appeals court judge appointed by Donald Trump—visited Stanford Law School this month to give a talk. It didn’t go well. Students frequently interrupted him with heckling. One protester called for his daughters to be raped, Duncan said. When he asked Stanford administrators to calm the crowd, the associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion walked to the lectern and instead began her remarks by criticizing him. “For many people here, your work has caused harm,” she told him. After Duncan described his experience in a Wall Street Journal essay last week, the episode has received national attention and caused continuing turmoil at Stanford. The associate dean has been placed on leave. Stanford’s president, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, and its law school dean, Jenny Martinez, have apologized to Duncan. Students responded to the apology with a protest during Martinez’s class on constitutional law. On Wednesday, Martinez wrote a 10-page public memo criticizing students’ behavior at the judge’s talk and announcing a mandatory half-day session on freedom of speech for all law students. The conflict is a microcosm of today’s political polarization. Duncan is a pugnacious conservative. His critics see him as a bully who denies basic rights to vulnerable people. His defenders call him a good conservative judge. But even many people who disagree with Duncan’s views have been bothered by the Stanford students’ behavior. Over the past few years, some American universities have seemed to back away from their historical support for free speech.
Negative words in news headlines generate more clicks (Nieman Lab) Why is all the news so negative? Maybe it’s because journalists are naturally drawn to aberrations—outliers from the norm—and those tend to be more bad than good. After all, a flight landing safely isn’t a story, but one crashing into the ocean sure is. Heck, maybe it’s because the world is just inherently a dark and depressing place—a theory the past decade or so seems ready to endorse. Or maybe it’s because it sells. News publishers, as rational economic actors, want to maximize the audience for everything they do, and there’s something about the negative lens on reality that draws eyeballs to copy. Those suspecting that last culprit find support in a new study just published in the journal Nature Human Behavio(u)r. The title says it all: “Negativity drives online news consumption.” The study found: Add a negative word to your headline—words like harm, heartbroken, ugly, troubling, angry—and get 2.3% more clicks, on average. And adding a positive word—like benefit, laughed, pretty, favorite, kind—does the opposite and keeps people from clicking.
'Mega strike' in Germany: Flights, trains and buses cancelled during mass walkout starting on Sunday (Euronews) There is likely to be widespread travel chaos across Germany early next week, after two of the country's biggest transport unions called a nationwide strike. It is set to be the biggest strikes the country has seen in 30 years. The mass strike follows a series of failed talks with employers in recent weeks.
Deutsche Bank shares drop amid global jitters over banks (AP) Shares in Deutsche Bank fell sharply Friday, dragging down other major European banks and leading German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to express confidence in the country’s largest lender after fears about the global financial system sent fresh shudders through the market. Deutsche Bank shares closed down 8.5% on the German stock exchange after falling as much as 14%. That followed a steep rise in the cost to insure bondholders against the bank defaulting on its debts, known as credit default swaps. Rising costs on insuring debt were also a prelude to Swiss lender Credit Suisse’s government-backed rescue by rival UBS. Like Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank is one of 30 globally significant financial institutions, with international rules requiring it to hold higher levels of capital reserves because its failure could cause widespread losses.
Thousands of civilians ‘at the limit of existence’ in Ukraine’s Bakhmut, Red Cross says (Reuters) Some 10,000 Ukrainian civilians, many elderly and with disabilities, are clinging on to existence in horrific circumstances in and around the besieged city of Bakhmut, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Friday. Russian forces have been trying for months to capture the city in Europe’s bloodiest infantry battle since World War Two. Several thousand are estimated to remain in the city itself, said the ICRC’s Umar Khan, who has been providing them with aid in recent days. “For the civilians that are stuck there, they are living in very dire conditions, spending almost the entire days in intense shelling in the [underground] shelters,” he told a Geneva press briefing by video link from Dnipro in Ukraine. “All you see is people pushed to the very limits of their existence and survival and resilience.”
Ukraine using Soviet-era choppers to pummel Russia from afar (AP) Skimming the treetops, three Soviet-era attack helicopters bank and swoop down on a field after an early-morning mission to the front lines in the fight against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Each day, they might fly three or four sorties, says the commander, whose two-crew Mi-24 helicopter, built about 40 years ago, is older than he is. “We are carrying out combat tasks to destroy enemy vehicles, enemy personnel, we are working with pitch-up attacks from a distance from where the enemy can’t get us with their air defense system,” said the commander. The conflict in Ukraine is largely an artillery war, with territory being fought for inch by inch under a barrage of shells and missiles. But Ukraine’s aviation capabilities play a significant role in the fight, the pilot said.
Little room for maneuver as U.S.-China ties slide further (Reuters) President Joe Biden said last month after a U.S. fighter jet shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon that he planned to speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the episode and clear the air between the rival superpowers. Five weeks later, the call still hasn’t happened. Instead, after two months of diplomatic sniping and Xi’s trip this week to Moscow where he and Russian President Vladimir Putin jointly denounced the United States, U.S.-China relations have slid to what some say is the worst since the countries normalized ties in the 1970s. Further complicating matters are stopovers in the United States next week and in early April by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen. “This is not a good moment for American diplomacy,” said William Kirby, a professor of Chinese studies at Harvard University. “In past times, when the relationship encountered a major dip, as after the Tiananmen massacre of 1989 or the Taiwan Strait crisis of 1995-96, the two countries made serious efforts to reestablish a stable foundation under their relations,” said Michael Swaine, a China expert at the Quincy Institute. “Now a deepening level of suspicion, vitriol, and finger-pointing dominate almost all exchanges, preventing substantive engagement.”
Saudi Arabia, Syria may restore ties as Mideast reshuffles (AP) Saudi Arabia is in talks with Syria to reopen its embassy in the war-torn nation for the first time in a decade, the latest diplomatic reshuffling in the region. The announcement on state TV comes after Chinese-mediated talks in Beijing saw Saudi Arabia and Iran agree to reopen embassies in each others’ nations after years of tensions. Syrian President Bashar Assad has maintained his grip on power in the Mediterranean nation rocked by the 2011 Arab Spring only with the help of Iran and Russia, which made a historic call earlier in the day to Oman. Arabic-language media had been reporting the possible detente in recent days ahead of the Saudi state TV announcement. The Wall Street Journal, quoting anonymous Saudi and Syrian officials, attributed the talks to reopen the countries’ embassies to Russian mediation.
Millions in African countries need power (AP) From Zimbabwe, where many must work at night because it’s the only time there is power, to Nigeria where collapses of the grid are frequent, the reliable supply of electricity remains elusive across Africa. The electricity shortages that plague many of Africa’s 54 countries are a serious drain on the continent’s economic growth, energy experts warn. In recent years South Africa’s power generation has become so inadequate that the continent’s most developed economy must cope with rolling power blackouts of eight to 10 hours per day. Africa’s sprawling cities have erratic supplies of electricity but large swaths of the continent’s rural areas have no power at all. In 2021, 43% of Africans—about 600 million people—lacked access to electricity with 590 million of them in sub‐Saharan Africa, according to the International Energy Agency.
Zimbabwe’s Latest Creative Currency: a Slice of Cheese (WSJ) Zimbabwe, the country that brought the world the one-hundred-trillion-dollar bill, has reached a new stage of monetary dysfunction. Because of a lack of small change, businesses have started printing their own “money”—scraps of paper, sometimes handwritten, that customers can use to pay for future purchases. Others are handing out change in-kind, making customers whole with juice boxes, pens or slices of cheese. The paper chits and other pecuniary workarounds are the latest products of two decades of extreme mismanagement of Zimbabwe’s currency.
Space Junk (Bloomberg) A new study out of NASA’s Office of Technology, Policy, and Strategy sought to figure out the most cost-effective way of dealing with the problem of space junk, which imperils the 7,200 working satellites in orbit. They’re also joined in orbit by 36,500 objects larger than 4 inches in size, 1 million objects between 0.4 and 4 inches in size, and 130 million pieces of debris smaller than that. Obviously, this is a problem, and there are lots of ideas to solve it, from space tug boats that clean space junk for costs of $6 billion to smaller hypothetical craft that could move small junk out of the way for $900,000 per kilogram of debris. But the reality is, the most cost-effective thing to do is just to keep moving satellites out of the way. The paper put the cost of doing that at $58 million a year for satellite operators, which is a lot of money, but also way less in the long run than the proposed alternatives would command. Indeed, the estimated cost of moving a $500 million satellite out of the way of some junk was $699, which is pretty reasonable.
