WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Wind, which generates less greenhouse gas emission than burning fossil fuels, is making up an increasing share of the energy production portfolio in the United States. But wind is not as efficient as coal or natural gas, causing some concern about its economic impact.
A Purdue University study that models increased wind production in 10 states shows significant economic impact in those states, as well as billions of dollars spread over the rest of the country. Led by Shweta Singh, an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and in Environmental and Ecological Engineering, a stand-alone academic unit in the College of Engineering, with colleagues at the University of Sydney, the results were published in the March issue of the journal Applied Energy.
“While the impacts are directly felt in the state experiencing the increase in economic activities due to installation of new wind energy generation capacity, the positive economic effects also spill over as shown by the MRIO calculations,” the authors wrote.
The analysis considers the effects of adding 500 megawatts each in 10 different states that produce the most wind energy in the U.S. — Texas, Iowa, Oklahoma, California, Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington and Colorado. The result would be almost $24 billion in economic impact in those states, as well as an additional $3 billion throughout the rest of the United States.
“In states that get new wind energy capacity, we see significant economic impact, but there is also $3 billion that spills over into the other states because there is so much interdependency on products being manufactured there,” Singh said.
The U.S. currently has more than 100,000 MW of operating wind capacity, according to the American Wind Energy Association. Adding 500 MW in 10 states would be only a 5% increase but would have significant economic benefits.

Graduate student Gargyea Vunnava’s analysis was developed using a new USA multi-region input output (MRIO) model that considers how a shock affects not just one segment of the economy, but many interconnected parts and regions. A U.S. MRIO lab has been developed in Singh’s lab using the Industrial Ecology Virtual Lab infrastructure created at the University of Sydney. This is the first MRIO lab created for the United States.
The sectors that would see the most economic benefit would be manufacturing, construction, finance and insurance, transportation and warehousing, and public administration.
“We are so dependent on coal energy because the infrastructure has been built and it’s so cheap,” Singh said. “But this study shows that there is significant economic opportunity from increasing wind energy production, as well as spillover that touches every state and many employment sectors along with long-term impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

The share of wind energy in the US energy supply has been steadily increasing in the last two decades. With new wind energy farms being installed in various states of the country, local and multi-regional economic disruptions are bound to take place. The multi-regional economic impacts of installing new wind farms was determined using the US multi-region input-output (US-MRIO) model that has been developed, also called the USLab. Currently, there is a lack of multi-regional impact assessment of wind energy expansion in the US. In this article, we use the US-MRIO to determine regional and sectoral spill-over effects resulted from installation of wind energy farms in 10 US states. The economic impacts were calculated by feeding the USLab with data obtained from the Jobs and Economic Development Impacts (JEDI) Wind model published by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The JEDI wind model provides the change in local economic data such as the number of new jobs created and increase of energy-related products in each region in the final demand and value-added. The data about final demand and value-added change was used with the US-MRIO model to account for the multi-regional economic impact across US due to installation of wind energy farms. The year of wind farm installation was set to 2017 and a US-MRIO for 2017 was generated to calculate the economic impact. The total economic impact was found to be 26 billion dollars of which 3 billion dollars was associated with the states where no new wind energy capacity was installed. Installation of new energy production capacity also results in “change in energy consumption” across US. Using the US-MRIO model and the energy intensity of manufacturing sectors, the energy consumption increase due to addition of wind farms was found to be about 6952 trillion of btu for the total change in economic throughput. Primary metal manufacturing and Machinery manufacturing sectors stood out amongst other manufacturing sectors with considerable change in energy consumption with an increase of 3074 trillion of btu and 1537 trillions of btu.

'Skeletons can tell you a lot.' Exhuming remains at 18th-century fort
LOUISBURG, N.S. -- The former residents of a massive 18th-century fort in Cape Breton have long since died, but David Ebert says they still have plenty to tell us.
Ebert, a strategic adviser with Parks Canada, is part of a team exhuming human remains from a large graveyard outside the gates of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.
"We have uncovered five sets of skeletArcheologist says new parking lot at Fortress of Louisbourg ruins experienceal remains already and we've found a number of artifacts to go with them," Ebert said in an interview.
"One of the skeletons had eight buttons that were lying on top of it. Clearly, somebody had been buried in a fancy coat ... When you see someone buried in a fine piece of clothing, it obviously shows some love and respect for that individual."
Up to 1,100 residents of the French fort are buried at the site, which must be excavated because it is threatened by coastal erosion. Parks Canada has referred to the project as rescue archaeology.
"Skeletons can tell you a lot of things," Ebert said, citing the fact that malnutrition as a child can leave permanent marks on one's teeth. "They are marks you'll see right until the day you die ... There's lots of little hints that the skeleton gives you about what sort of life they led."
A dozen students from the University of New Brunswick's department of anthropology started digging last week. The five-year project will document and protect the burial grounds at Rochefort Point, where the shoreline has retreated about 90 metres over the past 300 years.
Ebert said the staff and students are well aware they are in a sacred space.
"Science isn't our number one priority," he said. "It's the respect and dignity that all people deserve in death ... I tell the (students), 'Remember, this is somebody's great, great, great grandfather or grandmother."
The fort, which is so big it is actually a fortified town, was built in 1713 and abandoned in 1760 after decades of fighting between the French and British. Even though only one quarter of the fortification has been rebuilt, it remains the largest of its kind in North America. Every year, about 82,000 people visit this site, a half-hour drive south of Sydney, N.S.
Amy Scott, project director of the bioarcheology field school, said the project is giving students the best kind of hands-on experience.
"It's so very special for us to be able to have this partnership with Parks Canada," said Scott, an assistant professor at the University of New Brunswick."It's a very rich archeological site out here."
The students will stay in the field until Aug. 20, when the recovered remains and artifacts will be taken to Scott's laboratory for further analysis.
Testing will help determine the age, sex and health of each individual, data that will be given to Parks Canada for its interpretation and, hopefully, new insights into the fort's history.
Scott said visitors to the fort are being encouraged to walk to Rochefort Point, where they can take a closer look at the excavation and ask questions.
Jessica Hinton, a graduate student of anthropology at UNB, said working at the site has been thrilling.
"There are very few field school opportunities that are available to us, especially one with such a rich historical context," she said. "It's nice to be able to picture what it would have been like for the people who lived there at the time."
Part of her job is pulling back layers of the soil to determine where the graves are. It may sound like tedious, back-breaking work, but Hinton said she has already witnessed the unearthing of some valuable finds.
"It was extremely exciting," she said. "You get a tingling in your stomach ... But it's nerve-wracking as well because we want to make sure we treat them with respect and dignity."

Innovating while female: How four women made their marks
It’s no coincidence that women are driving some of the most innovative businesses in Canada. A recent study published in the Harvard Business Review showed that companies with the most diverse management teams generate 19 per cent higher innovation revenues than their competitors and nine per cent higher margins on earnings before interest and taxes. In fact, the McKinsey Global Institute has estimated that closing the gender gap in Canada would add $150 billion to the GDP by 2026. Here are just a few of the women already leading the pack — and their perspectives on supporting more innovators like them.
Julia Rivard Dexter — Squiggle Park
Julia Rivard Dexter beat out hundreds of athletes to compete in the 2000 Summer Olympics. And the same focus and resilience that got her to Sydney helps her juggle life as a tech entrepreneur and mother of four, she says. “You just realize you can push yourself further than you think you can.”

Her latest venture also combines her professional expertise with insights from motherhood. Squiggle Park, a reading tool for kids from preschool through Grade 2 was inspired by watching her children’s “laser focus” on their video game screens. “I knew if we could devote this time to developing their learning skills it would be magic,” she says.
Clearly, she was on to something. Even before the Dartmouth, N.S., company officially launched in 2017, it had 1,000 teachers across North America enlisted in a pilot project using Squiggle Park’s curriculum-driven game. The results were so positive it is now being used in more than 10,000 schools. The Canadian government has also purchased licences to improve the English language skills of new immigrants.
Although women are majority owners in only 20 per cent of Canadian small- and medium-sized businesses, Rivard Dexter says it’s an exciting time for female entrepreneurs. “There has been such a movement of women — and men — focused on helping other women succeed,” she says. “We’re finally moving the needle in equity.”
The challenge now is to help Canadian companies — whether owned by women or not — compete on a global scale.  “There are great programs focused on Canadian-made innovations,” Rivard Dexter says, “but there is very little follow-through when pilots are completed.”
She believes government procurement, as well as increased funding for government commercialization programs, will further stimulate technological innovation and help commercialize federal R&D investments.
Dr. Linda Maxwell — Biomedical Zone
Linda Maxwell has never accepted the word “no.”
“As a minority woman growing up in a small town in New Brunwick,” she says, “I needed to be creative to solve problems and managed to find my way to any goal I was trying to achieve.”
Her persistence paid off. She attended Harvard (as did her four sisters) before studying medicine at Yale — then earned an MBA at Oxford University. It was there that she was asked to lead a partnership with the National Health Service to bring life sciences technologies to market.
“I saw a real creativity and passion to change healthcare and that inspired me,” she says. “People in startups risk everything and you can’t help but respect that.”
Her experience at Oxford made her an ideal candidate to launch the Biomedical Zone, a commercial arm of the Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology run by Ryerson University and St. Michael’s Hospital. “I was recruited to conceptualize what this could be and was given the latitude to do something different,” says Maxwell.

That’s evident from the location of the business incubator Maxwell built — the first embedded in a hospital. “At any given time there could be 15 private companies within the walls of the hospital and that’s a real win-win,” she says. “The hospital has access to this cutting-edge technology while the companies get to interface with clinicians and patients.”
So far, the Biomedical Zone has fostered more than 30 companies, primarily focused on digital devices and data software for healthcare. Swift Medical’s smartphone app, for example, allows clinicians to track and measure chronic wounds.
Now, Maxwell hopes to extend the Biomedical Zone model to more hospitals across Canada. “There is no shortage of talented startups who want to be in the incubator but we simply don’t have the funding to take them all on,” she says.
Joelle Pineau — FB Artificial Intelligence Lab
“By virtue of being a researcher, I’m an innovator,” says computer scientist Joelle Pineau (pictured at top), who was tapped to lead Facebook’s first Artificial Intelligence Research Lab in Canada last year. “I was driven to this field by curiosity and that’s what drives me on a daily basis.”
Her lab is focused on the social applications of AI, with research related to health, language processing, robotics and games. In September, for example, Pineau’s team unveiled machine learning projects ranging from speeding up MRI scans by up to 10 times to interpreting ingredients lists and recipes from images of food.
Given the exciting pace of AI development in Canada, Pineau says it’s unfortunate more women aren’t represented in the field. A recent study conducted by Wired magazine estimated that only 12 per cent of research on machine learning is published by women. Part of the problem, Pineau says, is a lack of role models — and a lack of awareness about computer science.  “It’s about getting that message out in early high school that the quality of this work is so interesting — and lucrative.”
The field needs women, too. Machines learn the biases they are taught, and as AI is used for everything from self-driving cars to online banking, correcting for bias will become ever more critical. “We expect technology to have a large part in our lives so it matters that the people who develop it have a diverse point of view, too,” says Pineau.
She also believes Canada has an edge. “We were funding research in this area even before it was sexy,” says Pineau. Now the challenge is for Canada to train experts fast enough to fill the employment needs in AI. Facebook’s lab, for example, currently has 20 employees — but is moving to an office that will accommodate up to 80.
“We have a real opportunity in Canada to develop a whole new (technology) sector and we’re making big strides — but there is still so much do to,” says Pineau. “It’s all about creating a happy equilibrium of nurturing startups and graduating students with the right training to be able to join bigger companies too.”
Izabela Witkowska — StandardAero
Izabela Witkowska: “Now I have a dream job and every day is different.”
When Izabela Witkowska started working at StandardAero 22 years ago, she was one of very few female engineers at the Winnipeg aerospace maintenance and repair company. She worked her way up the corporate ladder, helping to build a state-of-the-art materials laboratory, assisting in accident investigations and providing technical/failure analysis training to various facilities.
“As a child [in Poland], I was always interested in how things work and fortunately I had an uncle who was a professor in material sciences who introduced me to a whole new environment of experiments and science,” she says. “Now I have a dream job and every day is different.”
While she was supported to pursue her dreams even from a young age, Witkowska recognizes that many women don’t have the same advantages. That’s why she now chairs an employee equity group devoted to mentoring women in engineering. She also encourages girls to join the profession. She takes part in an annual event in March at the University of Manitoba — which coincides with International Women’s Day — where she is paired with Grade 8 girls interested in engineering. And when she goes back to her hometown in Poland, she does classroom workshops with girls at her local high school.
“This is an issue all over the world and we can change things, but (we need to get) young women involved in workshops early on to show them what (these fields) are all about,” she says. “In aerospace I am constantly surrounded by the newest technology and innovation.”
Witkowska is also leading the charge by example. She is the first woman in Canada to become a delegated engineer for Transport Canada — where she evaluates the risk and approval of repair designs on behalf of the Minister of Transport — and the first woman from her company to become a senior design engineer for the Royal Australian Air Force, providing engineering support and approvals for the release of engines and aircraft for military operations.
“The opportunities are out there,” she says, “and sometimes women just lack the confidence to pursue them.”

Office / Indoor Air Quality – Investigating IAQ Complaints
The air quality of the indoor environment such as a non-industrial office environment can significantly affect the health, comfort, and productivity of building occupants. Indoor air quality (IAQ) in the workplace, such an office environment, is the subject of much attention recently, and for good reason. Although serious irreversible health problems related to IAQ in non-industrial office environments are rare, the perception of endangered health is increasingly common among building occupants. To date, the causes and consequences of poor IAQ are complex and not completely understood, but there are some basic factors that in many cases address IAQ concerns. IAQ is a problem when the air contains dust and objectionable odours, chemical contaminants, dampness, mould or bacteria. Poor indoor air quality can lead to a number of physical symptoms and complaints. The most common of these include: Thermal discomfort: too hot or too cold Headaches Fatigue Shortness of breath (eg. insufficient oxygen related to high carbon dioxide levels) Sinus congestion Coughs Sneezing Eye, nose, and throat irritation Skin irritation Dizziness Nausea Skin irritation These physical symptoms and complaints are often attributed to indoor air quality, however, it is important to note that indoor air quality is not always the cause. Other factors in the indoor environment such as noise, overcrowding, improper lighting, poor ergonomic conditions, and job stress can also lead to these symptoms and complaints. In many situations, a combination of factors is to blame. An increased likelihood of complaints is usually associated with factors such as the installation of new furnishings, uncontrolled renovation activities, poor air circulation and air flow, persistent moisture and ongoing low relative humidity. Complaints may also increase when there is a stressful work environment, such as impending layoffs, a great deal of overtime, or an ongoing conflict among staff members and management. A number of factors can affect the indoor air quality of a building or facility, including: The physical layout of the building The building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system The outdoor climate The people who occupy the building Contaminants emitted inside and entered from outside the building Poor indoor air quality and indoor air contaminants affect some people more seriously, including: People with allergies or asthma People with respiratory disease People whose immune system is suppressed as a result of disease or treatment People who wear contact lenses Indoor air contaminants can originate within a building or be drawn in from outdoors. These contaminants can lead to indoor air quality problems, even if the HVAC system is well designed, regularly maintained, and functioning to its optimum conditions. Sources of contaminants inside the building environment may include: Dust, dirt, or mould in the HVAC system (eg. cooling coils, ducts, registers) Office equipment such as laser printers and copiers (eg. airborne particulates, ozone) Personal activities such as smoking or cooking (eg. Volatile organic compounds, nicotine) Housekeeping activities such as cleaning and dusting Maintenance activities such as painting (eg. Volatile organic compounds) asbestos testing Sydney Spills of water or other liquids Special use areas such as print shops and laboratories Industrial processes such as dry cleaning Moisture affected building materials (eg. mould and bacteria) Sources of contaminants from outside the building may include: Vehicle exhaust Pollen and dust (eg. long term build up if cleaning regime is inadequate) Smoke Unsanitary debris or dumpsters near the outdoor air intake Depending on the complaint reported by building occupants, an indoor air quality investigation should include the following: Interview with building occupants to identify potential causes such as identifiable odours, recent changes that may have caused the issue, water intrusion event, increased occupancy, cleaning regime, etc. Assessment of the ventilation rate (generally when the indoor carbon dioxide levels are over 650 parts per million (ppm) above ambient outdoor levels) Walkthrough inspection of the building and the ventilation system (filters, cooling coils, condensation trays, air ducts, etc.) Sampling for airborne contaminants suspected to be present in concentrations associated with the reported complaints. Documenting the complaint, the investigation, and any actions taken. Occupant concerns regarding indoor air quality should be taken seriously and responded to as soon as possible. Initial information should be collected, checked and verified, preferably through interviews with occupants and a visual inspection: Details about the specific complaint Location(s) of the building where similar concerns about IAQ have been reported Time of occurrence of the IAQ problem When and where did it start and what has changed in the building just before the problem was first experienced People affected and extent of the affected area(s) Specific details on the health effects or discomfort occupants are experiencing If the health effects stop soon after leaving the building, or over the weekend If the symptoms have been diagnosed by a medical practitioner If there are any identifiable practices inside or outside the building occurring at a time coinciding with the reported issues If the air conditioning contractor or the building engineer evaluated the HVAC system or other conditions and the conclusions reached Once the information above is gathered and analysed the walkthrough inspection by a specialist indoor air quality consultant should be undertaken to identify potential sources of contamination or unusual conditions. Generally, at this stage the IAQ consultant should be able to narrow the possibilities and developing air sampling strategy if required to confirm potential causes of the IAQ problem and decide on suitable solutions or if further investigation is required. Generally, most IAQ issues can be resolved by addressing maintenance issues of the HVAC system (eg. air exchange rates, improved ventilation and air flow, filter change and disinfection of the internal surfaces of the air handling unit and the air ducts), HEPA vacuuming of the entire space, building repairs, addressing moisture issues, removing potential sources of contamination, implementing a new cleaning regime). Under the Work Health & Safety Legislation, it is the duty of the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) to provide a work environment that is free from risks to health and safety.
