Speaking of Yaletown - I came out of StPaul's Hospital & stumbled upon a historical "transplant"- an #architectural "jam butty": The George Leslie Cottage or the "Leslie Laneway House" (#lanewayhouse ) tucked way back, barely visible off Pendrell Street. This wee two-storey, wood frame "#cottage spared demolition, in 2002; teleported from its original location behind 1380 Hornby Street, Umberto's well-known Yellow House restaurant (close to The Yale Hotel) to the West End's Mole Hill. Restauranteur Mr Menghi donated it to #vancouverheritagefoundation where it was lovingly restored & turned back into #residential quarters. Little cottages like this were either stand alones or, as I say, "jam butties" off rear laneways to larger #victorian manor houses. Plasterer, George Leslie's laneway cottage has modest proportions but great #historic, cultural & architectural significance. He & Family lived in a larger main house built in 1888, then later, in 1901 he added this rare example of Queen Anne ‘cottage’ intended as a stable. By 1903 his newlywed daughter & son-in-law needed a place to live so Leslie fitted out the interior. Subsequently it was rented/occupied by a succession of tradespeople, incl. lathers, plasterers & carpenters. By the late 1940's Miss Wilhelmine Meilicke turned it into "Leslie Interiors" showroom/studios. Thru the '70's, Olive & Mano Herendy operated a couturier business here; Vancouver Baby-boomer brides still recall wedding dress fittings & afterwards it formed part of complex of houses making up Umbertos ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ restaurant (until being moved). Now I realize I've not had a Jam butty in years, nor do I see anyone else eat them either. I used to have them when I'm my packed lunch at school. I remember mum used to use the extra pie crust pastry & stuff Jam in them. I always loved #jambutties - almost more than the pie.
