A Little Bonk
When the house gets quiet, Lucy knows something is wrong.
She's in the kitchen, starting dinner, while Leah plays in the other room. Tim should be home any minute, and she knows their daughter likes to see him come through the door. While she cooks, she’s been listening to the sounds of a stuffed animal tea party, smiling to herself at the thought of Tim getting roped into joining.
“Don’t worry, Mr. Bearkins!” Leah had just said. “I can get more tea. Hang on!”
Then, quiet.
Lucy slides the dish of enchiladas into the oven, then leans into the living room to see what’s going on. As soon as she’s around the corner, Leah meets here eyes and bursts into tears.
“Mama!” she wails. “I fallded!”
“Oh, honey.” Lucy rushes over and sits in the floor. Before she can even reach out, Leah is climbing into her lap. “What happened?”
“M-Mr. Bearkins wanted more tea,” she begins, her voice trembling as she clings to Lucy’s shirt. “He dr-drinks a lot of it. So I gotted up to make more in the bathroom, with my steppin’ stool. B-but Tilly Tiger made me fallded!”
“Tilly Tiger?” Lucy wags her finger dramatically at the stuffed lion – named Tilly Tiger, depite its furry mane. “That wasn’t very nice!”
“It was not! I hitted my head on the couch, and then you camed in and asked me what happened, and I said the story, and then it’s now.”
“My goodness,” Lucy nudges Leah’s shoulder gently, enough for her to lean back so Lucy can inspect her face. “What part did you hit?”
“Right here!” Leah whacks her forehead with one tiny palm. “Ow! Mama, it hurts!”

The Rookie Recap: How Did #Chenford's Two (!) First Dates Go?
ABC’s The Rookie commemorated its return to Tuesdays with no less than the event “Chenford” fans have long waited for: Lucy and Tim’s first date. Did the couple’s assignation go off without a hitch? And might there be a Round 2?
As signaled from go — starting with a montage in which both Lucy and Tim tried on Date Night outfit after outfit after outfit, after which there was way too much small talk about bread and who ordered sea bass — the evening was teeming with anxiety. Which is to be expected. As Tim awkwardly noted, this was their first meal together where possibly getting shot at in the line of work wasn’t on the table, but “naked time” might be. Though Lucy made clear that she doesn’t want them to rush into bed.
Tumblr media
Alas, just as the first date jitters started to quiet, Tim clocked a commotion in the kitchen between an unruly customer and the chef, whose hand got sliced during the argument. Tim and Lucy leaped to action and apprehended the customer. Though now their jitters were over colleagues possibly responding to the 911 call and spotting them together!
Tumblr media
At the station the next morning, Tim and Lucy had just began sketching out a cover story — in case the incident report or a witness had noted they were dining together — when they were given an opportunity to test it on Nolan. But he simply wanted to pick their brain on his theory that Celina and Aaron have a workplace romance summering.
An on-edge #Chenford then got called into Gray’s office, where the sergeant launched into a spiel about his views on officers dating each other. Assuming their own jig was up — while I kinda wanted it to be that Gray is simply that observant — Tim and Lucy nodded along dutifully. Only to realize that, yes, Gray also suspected that Celina and Aaron were hooking up. And he wants Chen and Bradford to talk to them about the prospective pitfalls!
Lucy pawned off her assignment on Nolan, while Tim confronted Aaron himself. Neither heart-to-heart went well, suffice to say, with both Celina and Aaron responding with a version of “none of your bee’s was.” Though later, Celina made clear they were simply D&D buddies. After all, Thorsen is a Scorpio yada yada.
And as for that Chenford date? At episode’s end, they did a Take 2, foregoing another visit to “the most romantic restaurant in L.A.” (?!) to instead hit a food truck. And have Lucy allude to stories they’ll one day tell their grandkids! And have Tim pull Lucy in for a proper, first “real” kiss, to cap their second first date.
Elsewhere in the episode, and arguably as sweet as the Chenford stuff, Wesley felt out Angela regarding maybe making another baby. He was an only child, while she came from a house of rambunctious brothers, so their POVs differed. Plus, Angela is hesitant to pause her detective career again so soon. Ultimately, they agreed to revisit the topic in six months (or two years) — just before Nyla and James swung by to ask them to be Leah’s godparents!

As I am currently on a Chenford binge on AO3, I had this remarkable realization.
There is only 1 fandom writer that has ever created a ship's child that I have completely fallen in love with.
@imjustwritingg's Avery Upton from maybe it was fate
but now that I'm venturing way more into chenford, @firstdegreefangirl's Leah Bradford-Chen is like slowly worming her way into my heart AND I REALLY LOVE IT.
but also at the same time, it's really making me want to start MIWF all over again (but damn morgan that fic has over 200k words????)

Hello! Could you make a fanfic of Chenford becoming parents or Lucy being pregnant and Tim being really over protective?
Hey, Anon! Thanks for dropping by!
Unfortunately, I'm not feeling particularly motivated by this prompt right this second, in part I think because I've already done some exploration of Tim and Lucy being parents together. At some point, I'd love to write more of that, but it's just not where my heart is right now.
In the meantime, you can find that universe right here. I hope you enjoy it!

My Gift is You
Theme: Day 12 - Presents @12daysofchristmas
Fandom/Character(s): Tim Bradford/Lucy Chen (The Rookie)
Word Count: 2336
Ao3 link here!
Tim wakes up on December 25th when he feels Lucy stretching and stirring beside him. She’s wearing the shirt she’d peeled away from his body last night, and nothing else.
Merry Christmas, indeed.
Before either of them can make use of the lack of clothing between them, though, he hears Kojo’s toenails clicking against the floor and a heavy harrumph when he reaches the front door.
“Hang on, buddy, I’m coming.” Tim sighs, leaning over long enough to press a lingering kiss to Lucy’s mouth before he rolls out of bed.
“Oh, I’ll come too!” Lucy follows him, eager to get out of bed for maybe the first time since he’s known her. “Give me just a minute, I bought something that’ll be perfect for this!”
They both step into sweatpants, and Tim trails behind her into the guest room, where he knows Lucy has been stashing her Christmas presents. It’s a good thing his sister moved back to California this year, because there’s not an inch of extra room on the queen-sized bed. He knows there’s a quilt on it, but it’s completely hidden underneath a pile of presents.
“Lucy … this is too much. I told you, I don't need anything this year.”
“What?” Lucy calls over her shoulder, rummaging through the stack. “Oh, no, most of these are for Kojo. Then there’s one for Nolan, Angela, Aaron, Nyla, there should be something in here for Leah and Lila, Jack, uh, a few for Genny and the boys. And yes, there’s one for you too. I know what you said, but I wanted to.”
That makes him smile; secretly he’s glad there’s a present with his name on it. He’s got something for Lucy too, and there’s a little thrill that goes through him every time she shows him just how much he matters to her.
She stands up, holding a wrapped package in each hand and making a triumphant noise. “Aha! Found them! I think, anyway. These should be the right ones.”
“Maybe if you didn’t buy out the entire pet store …"
“He deserves nice things.” Lucy shrugs and slides past Tim. “Kojo! Come here, baby, look what I picked out for you.”
Tim has never understood wrapping presents for dogs or babies. They have no concept of what’s in them, so it feels like a waste of time and tissue paper.
But now he’s watching Lucy, sitting on his living room floor and tearing the paper away from a present she’d wrapped herself. She’s cooing at the dog, who’s sniffing around in fascination.
Maybe this year, he gets the point of it. Just a little bit, at least.
“What is it, Koj?” Tim leans against the back of the sofa to watch. “What’d Mom buy?”
“It’s …" Lucy pulls at the last of the paper. “A new harness! Look at that, buddy, it’ll look so good with your fur!” She’s right, Tim has to admit when he sees the bright blue material. Lucy starts unwrapping the next gift. “And this one is … a matching -” she cuts herself off. “Gorilla?”
Tim leans closer to see, and sure enough. She’s got a stuffed primate in her hands. Until Kojo trots over and takes it between his teeth. He prances happily over to Tim, who reaches down to tug at the loose arm hanging out of his mouth.
“It sure is! But matching? What does it match with?”
“It was supposed to be a leash.” Lucy stands up, holding the empty wrapping in her hands. “I found a leash to go with the harness, so he’d have a whole new set for walks. It’s in here somewhere …"She wanders back into the guest room and starts poking at the packages again. “Maybe I should have labeled what’s inside of them? He doesn’t read, so it would have been alright …"
Tim comes over to help her look, standing close enough that their arms brush together. He shakes a couple of the presents, until he finds one that’s a little heavier and feels like something is coiled up inside.
“This one?” Lucy checks it and confirms.
“You help him with it.”
“He’s a dog, Lucy.”
“Exactly. He can’t open it himself.”
Tim rolls his eyes fondly, but sits down on the couch in front of Kojo.
“Here, buddy. It feels like a leash, but let’s see … yep, it’s a leash.” He’s not even close to matching Lucy’s enthusiasm, but she smiles anyway.
“Hold it up! Here, let me take a picture of you two!” Tim’s smile is genuine, when he sees how excited Lucy is to capture the memories of their first Christmas together. He straps the new harness around Kojo’s middle and clips the leash onto the metal loops.
“Alright, bud. Leave your gorilla here, you can play with it when we get back.”
Kojo is almost nose-to-nose with the front door, but turns around to look at Tim. The new toy is still hanging from his mouth. Tim tugs on the leash.
“Kojo, drop it.” He repeats the command again, but Kojo doesn’t listen, so he looks to Lucy. “You’ve spoiled him, you know?”
“Tim, it’s Christmas. He can take it around the neighborhood.”
There’s no way he can argue against two sets of big brown eyes, so Tim gives in. They walk Kojo around the block, gorilla clamped tightly in his jaws the entire time.
“Look how much he likes it,” Lucy says as they turn the last corner. She slides her hand into Tim’s, leaning closer to his side. “He’s having such a good Christmas.”
“He’s not going to know what to do with so many new toys.”
“Sure he will,” Lucy shrugs. “He’s very smart.”
When they get home, Lucy trades her sweatpants for a pair of fuzzy PJ bottoms while Tim fixes breakfast. He keeps the meal simple, since he knows Genny is planning a small feast for dinner in the afternoon, but when Lucy isn’t looking, he slides a bear claw from her favorite bakery out of a high cabinet and sets it on the side of her plate.
When she sees it, her smile is brighter than the star on top of the tree.
As soon as they’re finished eating, Lucy is back in the guest room, asking if Tim is ready for his present.
“Let me get yours, and we can exchange,” he replies, changing into jeans and rooting around in his sock drawer for her gift.
They come back together on the couch, sitting entirely too close together for how large the piece of furniture is. Lucy tucks one foot underneath the opposite thigh, sitting sideways so her shin presses against Tim’s hip and her other leg dangles down to the floor.
“You go first,” she says, as soon as he’s situated. She passes him a slim package, not quite flat but almost. It’s wrapped in solid red paper with a smooth gold bow. It looks like the sort of packaging they give out at department stores, but he never doubts that Lucy did it herself.
He slides a finger carefully underneath the tape at one end and shakes out a dark blue box. When he takes the lid off she leans into him, like she’s trying to see the gift.
Or the tears that immediately well up in his eyes, try as he might to hold them back. It doesn’t matter how good the gift is, he’s not going to cry about it.
But it is a really good gift. One of the best he’s ever received, if he’s honest. He reaches into the box and pulls out a shiny silver money clip. When he runs his thumbnail across the surface, it catches in the ridges of the engravings.
Lucy’s handwriting is etched flawlessly into the face of it.
Love, the best rookie you’ve ever trained.
She’s signed her name underneath, neat swirls forming the letters he’s seen written at the bottom of countless reports.
They’ve never felt so significant before.
“Lucy, I …" His voice is watery, and he can’t find the words to say. “Thank you. I’ll be right back.”
He kisses her when he stands up, taking her hand in his. He doesn’t let go until he has to choose between holding her hand and pulling her across the house with him.
It’s an excuse, a little bit, a reason to step away for a second and compose himself. But mostly, he wants to put Lucy’s gift to use right away.
He steps into the bedroom, turning blindly toward the dresser. Without having to look, he reaches for the top corner, where he knows his money clip should be sitting.
Should be, it turns out, are the operative words.
Because he reaches for his money clip, and comes up empty. He turns his head, looking at the place he knows he’d set it when they came home last night.
It’s not there.
The top of the dresser is empty, except the dealership keychain with his truck fob on it.
“Lucy?” He calls, backtracking a few steps toward the doorway. “Have you seen my money clip?”
“Of course I’ve seen it,” Lucy replies. “I bought it.”
“No, the old one. It’s not on the dresser, but I know I put it away last night.”
“Oh, the old one,” Lucy draws the words out. “No, I don’t know where it is.”
But he can hear the laughter bleeding into her voice. She’s trying to stifle it, but he’s known her too long.
“Lucy …" He turns her name into a warning as he comes back into the living room. “What’d you do?”
“Nothing,” she says, laughing way too hard for him to believe her now.
“You’re sure?” He’s onto her now, and he doesn’t mind giving that away. She’s sitting on one of her hands, and suddenly, he’s pretty sure he knows exactly where his clip is. “Let me see your hands.”
“I don’t see why that’s relevant.”
“Come here.” Tim steps up to stand right in front of her. He waits for a moment, to see if Lucy will give it up. When she doesn’t, he lunges forward and digs his fingers into her side.
She squeals and pulls her knees up to her chest, trying to curl away from his playful attack.
And sure enough, his original money clip is on the couch cushion, right where her leg had been.
“Officer Chen.” He tries to use his most authoritative voice, but it doesn’t work. “What’s this?”
“I’m sorry!” She cries, finally rolling away from him. “I’m sorry!”
“Oh, you are in so much trouble!”
“It’s not my fault!”
“I guess you’re going to tell me Kojo did it?”
“’Never tell a crook where you hide your money!’” Just like a couple years ago, she throws his words back in his face, and he wonders why he didn’t see this coming.
“Fine,” he sits back and holds his hands up. “Fine, I’ll give you this one.”
“You’re not giving me anything,” she argues. “I won.”
“I didn’t know we were playing.”
“And isn’t that half the fun?” She’s still laughing, but she curls back into Tim’s side when he slides the new clip across the folded bills. “Do you like it?”
“I love it, Lucy.” He kisses her again, and once more when she tries to pull away. “Your turn.”
Tim shifts onto one hip and pulls a little black velvet box out of his pocket. There’s a red ribbon wrapped around the lid, courtesy of the cashier on duty when he’d picked it up at the jeweler’s the week before. He turns to pass it to Lucy, and her eyes go wide.
“Tim …" She slides away from him, putting a few inches of distance between them. “I’m … this is … it’s only been a few months. This is … what we have is great. But it’s so new and I just … I don’t want to rush things.”
“What?” He reaches for the lid of the jewelry box, and Lucy covers her hand with his.
“I’m not saying no. It’s not a no. Maybe more like a … not yet.”
“Lucy, can I show you what it is first, at least?” He drops the box into his other hand and flips it open.
It’s a necklace, a tiny silver seahorse with an opal inlay on its belly. Three tiny diamonds adorn its fin, and there’s a dark blue sapphire for the eye.
“Oh.” She breathes the syllable as much as she says it.
“It’s not a ring,” he says, obviously. “I wanted to get you something. Something … meaningful. Do you know what the seahorse represents?”
Lucy shakes her head and wipes a stray tear from her cheek.
“Neither did I.” They both chuckle. “But apparently it’s protection, and luck; two things you’ve always given me, and I always want you to have.” He takes a deep breath, trying to remember the rest of his practiced speech. “Friendly and gentle too, just like you. And this isn’t a proposal, but the lady at the store told me they represent love too. They mate for life, build families together and … I don’t know about you, and I know it’s soon, but I think that’s where we’re headed.”
Lucy doesn’t say anything. But she reaches out with one finger, shaking just a little bit as she runs it along the delicate pendant. Then she turns around and pulls her hair over one shoulder.
Tim fastens the clasp around her neck and runs his hands down her arms. Instead of turning to face him again, Lucy leans back until she’s settled against his chest.
“It’s perfect, Tim. All of this, it’s perfect. You and me and Kojo and this and … everything. It’s perfect.” She reaches up to find the back of his head and pulls him down for a kiss.
“I’m glad,” he replies, trying to fit everything he’s feeling into just two words, when he’s used to using three.
“And yeah,” she says, in the moment before their mouths meet. “We’re headed that way.”

Just [house] numbers?
My fill for Kid Fic on my Chenford Bingo card from @chenfordsourcerce!
--
“Daddy!” Leah breaks into a run as soon as she sees Tim standing outside his truck in the pickup line. He bends down and opens his arms, catching her and standing back up in one fluid movement to hoist her into the truck.
“Hey, Princess! How was school?”
“I haded so much fun today! We read a story on the floor, and played trees in art time, and went to the library!”
Sometimes, Tim wonders what his daughter is actually learning in kindergarten, but he’s sure that there are educational lessons buried in there somewhere. He just gets the highlights reel, the most exciting parts of her days. Besides, it’s hard to be too bothered by it, with the pure joy on Leah’s face.
“Sounds like a pretty big day! Did you pick a book?”
“Two of them! I can show you!” Leah tries to squirm out of the car seat to reach her backpack, sitting in the floorboard.
“Hang on, how about we look when we get home? Let’s get you buckled in so we can stop holding up the line.”
“But Daaaaaaaaaaddy!”

31 Days to a Costume
September 30
“Leah,” Lucy tries to get her daughter’s attention, but the bowl of Fruity Pebbles in front of her proves to be some stiff competition. “Leah.”
“Wha’?” She looks up, milk spilling out of her mouth as she responds.
“Swallow first, baby,” Lucy reminds her. “Then talk.”
“What?” This time, her mouth is empty.
“Do you know what you want to be for Halloween? It’s a month away, so we need to decide. That way, we have plenty of time to get your costume.”
“Oh,” Leah purses her lips. “I dunno yet, I think. I should maybe think of some ideas.”
“Maybe so,” Lucy smiles, wiping the dribbled milk from the tablecloth. “How about we check back in a couple of days?”
October 4
“Hey, Munchkin,” Tim looks up in the rearview mirror, stopped at a red light halfway between the elementary school and their house. “Come up with any costume ideas yet?”
“For what?” Leah stops humming to herself and kicks her feet against the back of Tim’s seat.
“For Halloween,” he fakes exasperation, but knows he could never be that upset with his daughter. Not over something like this, something that’s meant to be fun and celebratory.
“Yeah!” Leah shouts, and for a second, Tim wonders if his day is actually going to get easier instead of harder. “I’m still thinking.”
Of course she is.
“What if we think together? You could be … a lion. Or a police officer, like me and Mama. Or a pirate? We could get a little parrot for your shoulder, that’d be pretty cool, right?” Leah shakes her head with every suggestion. “What about a mermaid? You love mermaids.”
She does; there are close to a dozen shirts in her closet and three dolls in the toybox and bathtub to prove it. But still, she shakes her head again, more furiously this time. Tim presses his lips together, stifling a laugh at the way her pigtails bob back and forth on top of her head.
“Can we make it?”
“Make a mermaid costume? Probably so.”
“No, I don’t want to be a mermaid. But can we makes my costume?”
“You’ll have to ask Mama, honey. She’s the crafty one.”
Leah went back to humming after that, some song they’re learning for the Harvest Pageant at school. Tim figured the conversation was tabled for at least another day or two, when they’d prod her for suggestions again.
But he should have known better.
She’s bouncing up and down as soon as Tim opens the back door of the truck and helps her down to the driveway. The moment her feet hit the pavement, she’s racing ahead of him to the front door, tiny Paw Patrol backpack bobbing up and down as she runs. Tim unlocks the door and turns the knob, but Leah pushes it open, shoving her way inside.
“Mama! Mama, I’ve gots a question! Mama!”
Tim follows behind her, the two of them finding Lucy in the kitchen, flipping through a cookbook.
“Hi, baby!” Lucy beams when her daughter bursts into the room, sticking a napkin between the pages to hold her place. “What’s your question?”
“Can we make my costume this year? I wanna make it EXTRA special!”
Lucy laughs, the sound echoing off the walls, straight into Tim’s chest, where it settles warm and comfortable in his heart.
“Does this mean you know what you want to be?”
“No,” Leah shakes her head, and Lucy looks up at Tim. He raises his eyebrows and holds both hands up in front of him – what are we going to do with her? “But can we make it?”
“Only if you decide what it is that you’re going to be.”

Skinned Knees and Booboo Kisses
“Mama, Mama look!”
Lucy obeys the command, waving back at Leah, who’s standing at the top of the slide.
“I’m looking, honey,” she calls back, setting her book across her knee to watch Leah sits down very carefully at the top of the slide and scoot forward slowly until gravity takes over. When she gets to the bottom, she puts her feet up. Her tiny, pink light-up sneakers drag to a stop before she can fall off the bottom (a trick Tim had spent close to an hour teaching her after she’d landed on her butt one time, and acted like the world was ending).
She claps her hands together, laughing as she sits forward enough that she can stand up.
“Mama, did you see?”
“I saw!” Lucy confirms as Leah runs over to her. “You did so good!”
“I didn’t fall or nothing!”
“I know. What are you going to play next?”
“The sandbox!” Leah points, running off before Lucy has a chance to respond. As cautious as she is to avoid the dirt at the bottom of the slide, Leah drops right down into the sand, chattering on with the few other kids playing there like they've known each other forever.
Lucy watches until she’s settled in, then turns back to her book, idly wondering how many of Leah’s new playground friends she’s going to try and invite to her birthday party in eight months.
She flips the pages, looking up every so often to make sure everyone is still content. Not just Leah, either; her instincts have her looking out for every child on the playground. On more than one occasion, she’s asked a toddler not to eat dirt, or a grade schooler not to push littler kids out of their way.
There’s none of that today, though; everyone is playing happily, and Lucy manages to read three and a half chapters before she puts the book down again. This time, it’s only because she needs to rummage through the tote bag sitting between her feet until she can find her bottle of water.
It’s then, in the split second when her head is tucked down and she’s fishing around the applesauce pouches and sunblock for her drink, that Lucy freezes. Her shoulders go rigid and the hair on the back of her neck stands up. It’s just like her first day as a rookie, when bullets started flying around her, the split second of panic like ice in her veins before instinct kicks her into gear.
There’s a scream, loud and pained and terribly, awfully familiar, and Lucy’s head jerks up. The water bottle falls out of her hand, bouncing off of the wood chips and rolling … somewhere she’s not paying any attention to.
Because Leah is crumpled on the sidewalk, dropped onto her hands and knees. She’s got all of Lucy’s focus as she jumps to her feet and hurries over. By the time she gets there, Leah is sitting up on her knees, staring at her hands. Her face is red, tears rolling down her cheeks as she chokes on her own sobs.

I absolutely hope you bring back the Leah Bradford Chen universe, she sounds like a handful but I love that world!
Oh I'm for SURE going to bring it back. There's no WAY I'm done with that child yet. It's just a matter of figuring out which anecdote is going to be the basis for the next story.

What has been your favorite fic to write and why?
akdfaskdgsad I'm well aware that "all of them" is a cop-out answer (and really not even true), but I've tried several times to answer this and I just can't come to a single fic.
For me, the writing process is very emotive, and frequently very interactive. My favorite parts to write are the ones that almost seem to write themselves, just by way of my fingertips on the keyboard, Some of my favorite fics to have completed don't necessarily feel that way, but they're a lot of fun to read once they're finished. But as far as the fics that were most fun to write, they're the ones I pitched around with my friends and got myself so worked up about that the words are on the page before I even realize how much I've written.
For a short list of favorites that fit this position, try Daddy, Can You Die From A Broken Heart?, (hard to remember) Night That You'll Never Forget, Someone Who Wasn't My Rookie (I wrote this one on my phone, in three hours, in my mom's minivan while I tried not to get carsick from the screen time!), or the entire Leah Bradford-Chen series (which I'm beginning to think about expanding again).
