20240129: the History of LEGO Castle day 029. 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge (1988 / 1989, 168 pieces, 73 different parts) The eight minifigures for this set are completely versatile, with several brand new torsos and no duplicates in the set. -A knight with a blue torso and black arms with the silver breastplate print and blue legs with a black belt. -A Lion Knight red archer torso with blue arms and the gold lion on a triangular blue shield with a gold outline and red legs with a black belt. -A "peasant" with a light gray v-neck torso with blue arms, a black belt with a yellow buckle, a brown pouch, and red legs with a black belt. -A "maiden" with a white torso with blue collar and two-string red necklace with white arms, plain white legs, and a red cone hat. -A Lion Knight red axe-wielder torso with blue arms and the gold and black crossed axe pattern with red legs and a black belt. -A brand new blue torso with black arms and silver scaled mail print and blue legs with a black belt. -A black torso knight with black arms and the silver breastplate print with black legs with a red belt. -A red torso knight with blue arms and the silver breastplate print with plain black legs. There are a significant number of unique or limited pieces in this set. -Knight's Challenge introduced the very first LEGO 2x2x2 barrel, seen in this set in brown as a beverage dispenser. -This is the ONLY set with the red 3x3x6 corner wall panels. -This is also the only castle set with the green round fruit tree. -The triangular blue dragon shield with yellow wings on a red background and a thick blue border is new. -The red goblet was only found in four other sets from 1986-1991 and the white goblet was only found in seven other sets from 1986-2004. -The white octagonal canopy was only found in two other space sets from 1987, 6893-1 Orion II Hyperspace and 6972-1 Polaris I Space Lab. -The yellow 1x5x4 continuous arch bow was only found in two other sets, 6074-1 / 10039-1 Black Falcon's Fortress from 1986 / 2002 and 6276-1 Eldorado Fortress from 1989. -The red horse barding with the yellow lion is only found in two other sets (6039-1 Twin Arm Launcher from 1988 and 6081-1 King's Mountain Fortress from 1990). -The blue horse barding with a black background and blue dragons is my favorite horse barding print, and it was only found in this set and two others (6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle from 1988 and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle from 1992). Back of the box and back of the instruction manual builds for this set include a social scene, a horse saddle with sun covering, a spread out fair, and a boat. One of the issues I have with this set is that the pavilion, the beverage barrel, the jousting divider, and the arms rack are all built on different sized green baseplates. While the pavilion uses the thin style, the other three separate elements use the thick style. As this set has so many different separate elements, it makes picking it up and moving it considerably more difficult. Also, while this is a very colorful build, the Knight's Challenge doesn't really have much in the way of buildable pieces. It's still a very fun set and augments the rest of the LEGOLAND Castle System very well. Also, even though the white torso with two string red necklaces is used with the "princess cone hat" and that minifigure is sitting higher in the pavilion stands than the two knights, the minifigure is referred to as "maiden" on the inventory pages, and not as "princess" or any other title that might indicate royalty, and the "peasant" has the brown "female" hair, which indicates at least some attempts at gendering in this LEGO set. Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable with a free download of the instructions available at ToysPeriod.

The Big Weird: Long Live the New Flesh
/ poetry inspired by the sci fi body horror of david cronenberg
asked to stick around— like that—
broken disco ball is glass [now] on the bottom of the floor the really real bathroom wall is covered in interwoven prayers, phone numbers and emails, begging, the evil work of unanswered questions, 6060-842- everything:
but don’t believe it’s ending— never, not at all even; the sun shines;
it’s four of us, for the kids at 25 who slink around under trees and in cubicles; eating legos and in shock at the bills, fighting bulls on stadium grass dry with old blood
and new wounds /
a Metamorphosis in the dark warmth of december cinema, it’s 2007 and we’re watching a david fincher movie to feel better about how empty we suddenly feel, post atom bomb drop,

20240214: the History of LEGO Castle day 045. 1491-1 Dual Defender (1992, 48 pieces, 15 different parts) The Dual Defender is another catapult, built on three 2x10 green plates with black launch arms and light gray cannon balls, this is the first catapult to use a large 4x4 turn table. The two minifigures in this set are exactly the same, with dark gray helmets, blocked open stud yellow smiling face, a blue torso with printed silver scale mail and black arms, and blue legs with a black belt. They both have triangular shields with a blue dragon with yellow wings on a red background with a blue border and a dark gray sword. This catapult has a lot more power to it, in comparison to the small 1480 King's Catapult. The launching arms are actually very well balanced for the intended task and it's pretty impressive reach. I think it's sets like this which eventually motivated LEGO to put the "don't shoot this it's people's eyes" comic in future instruction manuals. I definitely was that person when I was younger who got great enjoyment out of using catapults (and the pirate cannons) to defend my room from interlopers :) This is a fun little set and I really like the blue scale mail torsos, though this torso was only found in three other sets (1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge, 6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle, and 6018-1 Battle Dragon). Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.

20240108: the History of LEGO Castle Day 008. 6010-1 Supply Wagon (1984, 33 pieces, 23 different pieces) Supply Wagon was designed by Daniel August Krentz and was the first small set from the LEGOLAND Castle System theme. If you want to know more about the designer, Daniel August Krentz, BrickSet did a really nice tribute and has a full list of everything he designed. The Supply Wagon introduced the first "civilian" into the Castle System theme, listed as a peasant, and also saw the first playable molded animal in the form of a white horse. The horse can fit a 1x2 saddle or a combination of 1x2 plates and a tile or a 1x2 brick, which allows the horse to not have a gaping hole in the back when not being ridden. The horse can move its head up or down, to give the horse the ability to graze or hold its head high while pulling a wagon. This set also introduced the hinged bridle for the horse, giving the ability to build a cart or wagon that can travel up hills or rotate from side to side, though the main wagon build for this set does not allow for the rotational aspect. This set also introduced brown into the Castle System with 33mm wagon wheels, a spear, and a brown hood for the light gray minifigure torso, as well as dark gray for the sword and the round shield. In addition to this set, the light gray torso with blue arms, a v-neck, and a belt with a pouch was found in five other sets from 1985-1989 (6055-1 Prisoner Convoy, 6103-1 Castle Mini Figures, 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge, and 1974-3 Smuggler's Hayride). The back of the box builds continue to show doing the most with a limited amount of bricks, as you could use the pieces in this box to build a chariot-style wagon, a plow, or even weigh down the horse and make it carry all the supplies while the "peasant" patrols. I do very much like the silhouette picture, though, as it feels like a story just waiting to be told. Honestly, I miss these kind of sets, which were just a minifigure and a small handful of parts in a very small box for under $5. I think this one actually retailed around $1.99 or even $2.99 in the United States when it came out in 1984. BrickLink, BrickSet, and Rebrickable all list the Supply Wagon with the Lion Knights sub-theme under LEGOLAND Systems Castle but this set seems completely neutral to me. In fact, the only time this torso shows up seems to be when the Lion Knights need someone to arrest. This is probably also the best armed supply wagon I've ever seen, sporting a halberd, spear, short sword, hammer, and a round shield with no print or stickers to show affiliation. The 2x3 double convex slope gives the appearance of a treasure chest at the back of the wagon, but I think a real treasure chest would have been more fun. Though, as the "peasant" doesn't have any colored flags on the wagon, it would be difficult to assess exactly whose treasure the "peasant" transported :) Of note, this set, just like many of this era, contain the 1x1 plate with a thin side vertical clip. I can't tell you how many of these clips I've broken over the years so if you're building this set with era-authentic parts, you might want to be very gentle with those clips. And also the side clips on the saddles :) Toysperiod has a free download of the instructions. Just over two years ago, I actually wrote a little bit of fanfiction using my LEGO as inspiration. Here is a link to my original post on LEGO 6010 Supply Wagon.

20240206: the History of LEGO Castle day 037. 6018-1 Battle Dragon (1990, 54 pieces, 25 different parts) The Battle Dragon is a very neat attack boat with a red base, black middle, blue railing, brick-built red dragon head on the prow, and a blue platform supported by four small pillars covering a brown barrel with two yellow "gold" pieces inside. The back platform also has small black railings and a red flag on the back. Two minifigures for this set include a red torso with red arms and a printed scale mail pattern with blue legs and a black belt and a blue torso with black arms and a printed scale mail pattern with red legs and a black belt. Both minifigures wear the dark gray axe-wielder helmet. 1990 saw the rise of the Black Knights as the next LEGOLAND Castle System subtheme. The Black Knights started filtering into the sets in 1988 with 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge and 6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle. While BrickLink lists this set as a Black Falcons set, it's more obviously a Black Knights set, as the scale mail torsos found in this set are so far only found in the Black Knights. For being such a small set, the Battle Dragon really does introduce interesting new parts, including the black 1x4x2 center stud top which is only found in this set and the piece itself is only found in nine other colors and was in production from 1989-2007. This set also introduces the brown oar, allowing boats to use proper oars instead of spears. Another new piece is the dark gray crossbow, which becomes a staple throughout many LEGO sets. Back of the box builds for this set include a bakery where the two minifigures are making some delicious yellow cakes in their outside oven, a platform for both of them to carry a supply barrel, and a small dock with a canoe. plastic.ati on Rebrickable made another alternate build called the "Emperor's Order", a small pavillion. This is another of my original sets from when I was younger. As I have always enjoyed dragons, I found this particular boat to be extra awesome, as the dragon head really is a clever design, especially given the limitations of part size and color at the time. This is only the third castle boat so far, after 6017-1 King's Oarsmen and 6049-1 Viking Voyager from 1987. The only other set so far with a water element was 6077-2 Forestmen's River Fortress. Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found on ToysPeriod. You can also find some of the other sets designed by this designer, Steen Sig Andersen, on BrickSet.

20240201: the History of LEGO Castle day 32. 6085-1 Black Monarch's Castle (1988, 688 pieces, 120 different parts). The Black Monarch's Castle is the first stronghold for the Black Knights, a subtheme after the Black Falcons, Lion Knights, and Forestmen. Featuring a black castle with light gray highlights, this castle is built on three thin green baseplates with two rounded corners in the back left and right hand areas, a thick dungeon door in the back right hand side, a black drawbridge and portculis in the front, and the second gate that's actually big enough for the carts and wagons so far to actually fit through. This set contains twelve minifigures - on par with the 6080-1 King's Castle from 1984. -Four archers wtih a new red torso with red arms and a printed scale mail pattern and blue legs with a black belt. -Four blue torsos with black arms and a printed scale mail pattern and red legs with a black belt. -One knight with a black torso, black arms, the silver breastplate print, and black legs with a red belt. -One knight with a blue torso, blue arms, the silver breastplate print, and blue legs with a black belt. -One knight with a blue torso, black arms, the silver breastplate print, and red legs with a black belt. -One knight with a red torso, blue arms, the silver breastplate print, and blue legs with a black belt. Unique and rare pieces for this set include: -The black 2x5x6 castle wall panel with light gray bricks, which is ONLY found in this set. -The black 2x5x6 castle wall panel with light gray bricks surrounding the window, which are only found in this set and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle from 1992. -The black 3x3x6 corner wall panel with light gray bricks, which was found in six pirate and castle sets between 1985-1995. -The blue hard plastic 2x2 flag with a blue dragon with yellow wings on a red background flag, which was only found in three other castle sets (1888-1 Black Knight's Guardshack, 6057-1 Sea Serpent, and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle). -The blue horse barding with a blue dragon on a black background was only found in two other castle sets (1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle). -The red horse barding with a red dragon on a blue background was only found in one other castle set (6086-1 Black Knight's Castle), which is honestly kind of a relief because I find this specific barding really difficult to look at :) Back of the box, top flap, and other alternate builds for this set include: -A small fortress with a three-story tower with stairs along the outside. -A wall and a siege engine. -A medium-sized boat with two different masts and a rowboat. -A fortress with two separate sections connected by a tall bridge. -A drawbridge with two towers on either side. Additionally, n2brick and recifaliste both have free downloads of alternate builds on Rebrickable. Parts inventory for this castle can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable with a free download available at ToysPeriod. This set was designed by Niels Milan Pedersen and you can find more of his designed LEGO sets on BrickSet.

20240211: the History of LEGO Castle day 042. 6081-1 King's Mountain Fortress (1990, 438 pieces, 120 different parts) The King's Mountain Fortress is a mostly light gray castle with large brown double doors covered by a black drawbridge, a brown and green tree on the back corner, and a two story tower at the back of the castle behind the gate. The fortress is built on a green raised 32x32 baseplate with printed rock patterns and a large ramp. The set comes with eight minifigures and two horses, one black with a red saddle and one white with a red and yellow lion print barding. The minifigures include: -A glow-in-the-dark ghost, the second one so far in castle sets. -A knight with a dark gray visor on a dark gray helmet with dark gray armor over a red torso with blue arms and the silver printed breastplate pattern and black legs with a red belt. -A knight with a dark gray visor on a dark gray helmet with dark gray armor over a red torso with blue arms and the silver printed breastplate pattern and blue legs with a black belt. -Two Lion Knight guards with dark gray axe-wielder helmets, blue torsos with red arms and the triangular gold lion on a blue back ground with a gold border and black legs with a read belt. -Two knights with red torsos and blue arms and the silver scale mail print with black legs and a red belt. -A "maiden" with a red cone hat, a yellow printed minifigure head with black bangs and thick red lipstick, a white torso with a printed corset hinting at cleavage with a beaded blue necklace and white arms, and a blue 2x2x2 plain slope as a dress. New and unique parts for this set include -The 32x32 raised baseplate, only found in this set and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle. This mold was also used in the blue and light gray pattern for 6276-1 Eldorado Fortress from 1989. -The black parrot, only found in this one set. -The white and blue corset torso, which was only found in this set, though the white pirate corset torso was distributed in 1989 from 6285-1 Black Seas Barracuda and the green corset torso came out in 1990 with 6071-1 the Forestmen's River Crossing, though this is the first corest torso to be paired with a slope designed to represent a dress. The 2x2x2 blue slope without internal tube was only found in four other LEGO sets from 1990-2003. The red cone hat was only found in two other sets (6067-1 / 10000-1 Guarded Inn and 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge). I have no box for this set and there are no alternate builds on the instructions, but Rebrickable user Legoivo made some alternate instructions. This set is a lot of fun, with the back gate on the second floor, the small dungeon with the large dungeon door, and especially the use of the raised baseplate to have a treasure room and a secret compartment at the bottom of the interior valley. I'm not as much a fan of the drawbridge mechanism, as it's harder to roll the wheel to pull the gate up or to let it drop. But did did also like the ghost's hidden compartment next to the main gate :) This is the sixth castle set which specifically genders minifigures. This time, the gender identifications don't come because of their headgear or the label given by the catalogue, but by making a minifigure torso with a printed thin waist and a corset with cleavage, and a minifigure head with thick red lipstick. I think this actually bothers me a bit because up until this point, the minifigures had no gender, and even the four previous gender identifications were superfluous, as it was just a written label, but now, this minifigure is adding sexual characteristics. Before this minifigure, any of the minifigures could be any gender. But not anymore. And sometimes I wonder if these three corset torsos is where LEGO actively decided to value making toys for boys over toys for everyone. Parts inventory for this set can be found at either BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. You can find more sets by Daniel August Krentz on Brickset.

20240202: the History of LEGO Castle day 033. 1974-3 Smuggler's Hayride (1989, 50 pieces, 22 different parts) Part of the LEGOLAND Triple Pack released in 1989, the Smuggler's Hayride is a black horse pulling a black cart with a blue harness and brown wagon wheels. The back of the wagon has a brown treasure chest with two pieces of gold inside (the two yellow 1x1 circle plates) and the treasure chest is hidden by five yellow 2x2 bricks, intended to appear as hay bales. The two minifigures for this set include the "peasant" torso of light gray with blue arms, a yellow v-neck, and a printed black belt with a yellow buckle and brown pouch and plain light gray legs and a green forest person torso with green arms and a yellow v-neck, a printed black belt with a yellow buckle and brown pouch with plain green legs. The "peasant" torso appears in only four other sets (6010-1 Supply Wagon, 6055-1 Prisoner Convoy, 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge, and 6103-1 Castle Mini Figures) and this set and the Castle Mini Figures are the only two sets where the "peasant" and forest people are offered together. This set is one of only three other sets (6073-1 Knight's Castle, 6035-1 Castle Guard, and 6066-1 Camouflaged Outpost) to have the three black feathers and only four other sets (6040-1 Blacksmith Shop, 6103-1 Castle Mini Figures, 1680-1 Haycart with Smugglers, and 1877-1 Crusader's Cart) with the brown pitchfork. Back of the box builds for just the Smuggler's Hayride include using the horse as a pack animal to cross a bridge and having the peasant pull the treasure cart by hand while the forest person rides the horse, which just seems underhanded and cruel and not at all what the "Robin Hood" of LEGO ought to be doing ;-P This is probably one of my most worn and beaten up sets from my younger days. I remember seeing this box in Costco when I was growing up and how desperately I wanted it because it looked SO COOL. For being such a simple set, the side hinges and hiding the treasure chest under the hay really made it awesome :) Parts inventory for this set can be found at BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions is available on ToysPeriod.

20240229: the History of LEGO Castle day 060. The Lion Knights (1463 / 1695 / 2889 Treasure Cart, 1480 King's Catapult, 1584 / 6060 Knight's Challenge, 6016 Knight's Arsenal, 6017 King's Oarsmen, 6021 Jousting Knights, 6022 Horse Cart, 6023 Maiden's Cart, 6039 Twin Arm Launcher, 6040 Blacksmith Shop, 6041 Armor Shop, 6042 Dungeon Hunters, 6049 Viking Voyager, 6055 Prisoner Convoy, 6061 Siege Tower, 6062 Battering Ram, 6067 / 10000 Guarded Inn, 6080 King's Castle, 6081 King's Mountain Fortress) The most prominent of all the LEGO castle subthemes is the Lion Knights, introduced in 1984 and with sets in the original run all the way through 1992 with a rerelease of the Treasure Cart in 1998, and then new Lion Knight sets reinvigorated in 2022 with the release of the Lion Knights' Castle (not pictured). The Lion Knights were also referred to as Crusaders in the catalogues when they first came out. BrickLink and Rebrickable both indicate these are the Lion Knights / Crusaders sets: -1463 / 1695 / 2889 Treasure Cart -1480 King's Catapult -1584 / 6060 Knight's Challenge -6010 Supply Wagon -6012 Siege Cart -6016 Knight's Arsenal -6017 King's Oarsmen -6021 Jousting Knights -6022 Horse Cart -6023 Maiden's Cart -6039 Twin Arm Launcher -6040 Blacksmith Shop -6041 Armor Shop -6042 Dungeon Hunters -6049 Viking Voyager -6055 Prisoner Convoy -6061 Siege Tower -6062 Battering Ram -6067 / 10000 Guarded Inn -6080 King's Castle -6081 King's Mountain Fortress This is a classic theme with a lot of sets, including lots of carts, wagons, siege engines, catapults, and castles :)

20240227: the History of LEGO Castle day 058. The Black Knights (1491 Dual Defender, 1547 Black Knight's Boat, 1584 / 6060 Knight's Challenge, 1624 King's Archer, 1888 Black Knight's Guardshack, 1917 / 2890 King's Catapult, 1971 Soldier Cart, 6009 Black Knight, 6018 Battle Dragon, 6034 Black Monarch's Ghost, 6059 Knight's Stronghold, 6057 Sea Serpent, 6085 Black Monarch's Castle, 6086 Black Knight's Castle) There is a significant amount of overlap between the Black Falcons and the Black Knights, with soldiers with scale mail torsos holding Black Falcons shields while on a boat that looks like a dragon, Black Falcons defending themselves against the invading Black Knight boats, and the same blue knight torso with black arms used in both Black Falcons castles and both Black Knights castles. BrickLink lists these as the Black Knights sets: -1491 Dual Defender -1547 Black Knight's Boat -1624 King's Archer -1888 Black Knight's Guardshack -1917 / 2890 King's Catapult -1971 Soldier Cart -6009 Black Knight -6034 Black Monarch's Ghost -6057 Sea Serpent -6059 Knight's Stronghold -6085 Black Monarch's Castle -6086 Black Knight's Castle Rebrickable and BrickSet list these as the Black Knights sets: -1491 Dual Defender -1547 Black Knight's Boat -1624 King's Archer -1888 Black Knight's Guardshack -1917 / 2890 King's Catapult -1971 Soldier Cart -6009 Black Knight -6018 Battle Dragon -6034 Black Monarch's Ghost -6057 Sea Serpent -6059 Knight's Stronghold -6085 Black Monarch's Castle -6086 Black Knight's Castle The Black Knights really did have a mostly black castle theme and all the sets stuck with the black and light gray fortress style building, which makes them a bit dark for display. I greatly enjoy the blue dragon barding, the dragon plumes, and all the dragon shields in this subtheme. I also enjoyed the simple dragon head designs on the boats. And the brand new armor continues to be a lot of fun. The baseplates here don't really work to combine, as you've got the large raised baseplate, small thin baseplates, and the normal plates.

20220919: according to BrickLink, this is every Lion Knight Lego set produced between 1984 and 2022. this is 40 years of Lego castle! some are sets I’ve had since I was much younger, some are fairly new acquisitions (10305: Lion Knights’ Castle), and some I built out of parts over the last several years. one of the very cool parts about this castle series is back in the 1980s and 1990s, all the castle sets came with attachment hooks so you could combine them all in a variety of ways to increase the size of your castle or build your world however you saw fit. I tried combining them all several months ago but I just didn’t have the space to lay everything out. now, I’m not quite sure if I should take the time to combine them for a picture or just wait until I rebuild castle town, which is definitely a thing that’s going to happen as soon as I get set up in my next place :) picture shows: 6010: Supply Wagon, 6021: Jousting Knights, 6022: Horse Cart, 6040: Blacksmith Shop, 6061: Siege Tower, 6080: King’s Castle, 199384: Lion Knight Polybag (all from 1984), 6055: Prisoner Convoy (from 1985), 6012: Siege Cart, 6023: Maiden’s Cart, 6041: Armor Shop, 6067: Guarded Inn (all from 1986), 6016: Knights’ Arsenal, 6017: King’s Oarsmen, 6049: Viking Voyager (all from 1987), 1584: Knights’ Challenge, 6039: Twin Arm Launcher (both from 1988), and 10305: Lion Knights’ Castle (from 2022). since 6060 was a rerelease of 1584: Guarded Inn and 10000 was a rerelease of 6067: Knights’ Challenge, I didn’t include duplicates :)
