okay but why is it literally easier to explain my thesis topic to non-linguists??

#i think it’s bc i don’t feel like i need to try as hard to sound like i know what im talking about #but like #it’s not like literally any of my classmates have ever heard of k-glottalization before either! #like i had to explain the difference between glottal replacement and reinforcement! #which okay is actually a very complicated thing but that’s only once you get into the details which i was very much not in my explanation #but yeah idk academia is weird #idk if this is how it is in other fields but like #so much of linguistics research is super super specific and like very divorced from a large majority of the field #so it’s very odd! bc i can have a conversation w other linguists abt our research and neither of us will have any idea what the other is tal #talking about beyond like intro course level #which is kind of cool tbh #and also definitely means i don’t need to feel as insecure abt my knowledge as i do #but also like #bc this is what studying linguistics is to me i forget it isn’t the same for everyone else? #like most other linguists don’t have a strong opinion or much background knowledge on k-glottalization #bc believe it or not they haven’t spent the last two years absorbing themselves in every scrap of literature they could find on the topic #anyways idk academia is just strange! #thesis tag
