Every night in Cambridge, the Time Eater clock strikes twelve.

Then it strikes thirteen.

And the monsters come out.

Reality and Dream: two worlds in a locked orbit, converging only at their furthest-flung edges. Torn apart by their worst nightmares.

So, when Zack Strange is chosen as one of humanity's guardians, you can see why his reaction is no way in hell. Allergic to risk-taking, conflict, things that go boo in the night (and, some would say, fun) Zack just wants to restart his nice, normal life at his nice, normal school, under his new name. And to find a binder that's comfy for PE class. Is that really too much to ask?

In contrast, when Zoe Ansari received a giant hourglass and was told she would train to slay nightmares, her only question was when do we start? Zoe quickly falls in love with the warped Escher-world of the Thirteenth Hour. She knows no fear. She knows no danger. She knows, if you ask Zack, far less than she thinks she does, and is likely to get herself and everyone in a ten-mile radius dead - which makes it a crying shame that he's her training partner.

Zack grudgingly joins the Sandmen in the hopes that they can save his grandma, who is in hospital after having her mind stolen by a dream. But shadowed secrets lurk in the heart of their new school. When Zack and Zoe discover a dangerous truth about the Sleeping Sickness, they will be forced to question their loyalty to the school and each other, and what it truly means to be brave.

hi!!!! i just read tsh and i dont quite know if im obssesed, if it started a dark academia phase, or if im just purely shocked. that was such a good book. idk what it is, but i changed after that. i wanna live the vibe that tsh exhibits. strangely enough, ive envisioned all the characters to have british accents and it kinda changed the whole book for me yk?? anyway, im obssesed, hope this blog is still active. DARK ACADEMIA AHHHHHHSIAOSIDJDJSIDIEU!!!!!!!!!

Want to know something absolutely wild(e)? When this blog was active, the term "dark academia" wasn't a Thing yet. It's so mind-boggling to me that this book came out in what, 92? 94? This blog's premise was that I hadn't read it, don't expect me to know when it came out. ANYWAY, The Secret History came out near a decade before 2014-15, and there was enough of a Tumblr user fanbase at that point that I got Fear Of Missing Out TM from not having time to read it, and then only a few years after THAT the whole aesthetic that Richard blames his mortal sins on becomes a huge...Thing. I just think that's just fascinating! I wonder if/how "dark academia" has evolved over time. I wonder if this blog gets talked about on Tiktok, which feels cringe to admit, but one time I told a friend "I had this niche but seemingly popular or at least well-loved sideblog back in the day, like I ( U.S. American) became friends with this girl in Scotland for completely unrelated reasons and it turned out she knew the blog, isn't that crazy?" and the person I was talking to was like "omg that IS crazy, what was the blog about?" so I told her and she (in Switzerland) said "THAT WAS YOU?!?!?"

since this is like,, a pro hero au

i must say that i headcanon hitoshi to be a night time/underground hero— gotta take advantage of the insomnia, am i right?

he spends most of his day indoors, probably doing extra unfinished paper work, resting, and other miscellaneous stuff.

if he’s graced with luck, you’ll also be staying inside with him— and he’ll be practically leeching onto you (at least until 8pm, when he needs to grind on that pro hero work)

but if you’re out, you’re probably doing your own thing— depending if you’re also a pro hero just maybe not the night shift type of hero or a regular citizen

if you’re a pro hero and if you want— he’ll make you lunch in his apron, that most likely has a cat print embroidered on it and he’ll deliver the lunch at your agency when lunch break hits

if you’re a citizen, he’ll do the same thing as mentioned above— but he’ll probably do it as a surprise if he knew you had absolutely nothing to eat for lunch

so! with that being said, the chances of you seeing hitoshi during the time period of 9:30pm to 4am is kinda rare

even though hitoshi does try to make the most of his time with you

to make up for his absence during the night, he’ll leave his very oversized hoodies around the house for you to wear

or better yet, he’ll just hang his sweater around your shoulders as he kisses you goodbye :,)

and if the streets are calmer, he’ll even drop by your shared apartment/house just to say hello

or just so he could sneak in bed and cuddle with you, he’s touch starved

speaking of hitoshi being an insomniac, when he’s on his off days— he’ll spend the night just,, looking at you. it has always been a habit of his.

even though you beg him not to do that because sleep is very important

like it might sound strange but i promise it’s not. you’ll either be laying on his lap, or resting in his arms as you slept

and he’ll just, trace his hands over your features. it’s calming to him.

but when you’re staying up with him, the situation is definitely different.

sometimes it’ll be another intense cuddle session while you guys watched a mukbang or a tv show you both really like

and sometimes, the both of you guys will be up at like,, 3 am, just browsing cat pictures

and it’ll just be the two of you discussing about what breed you guys want to adopt even if you already have a cat, hitoshi thinks that another one wouldn’t hurt you both

“Y/N, what about this cat? looks cute, right?” “hitoshi, that’s a persian cat. very high maintenance.” “we can handle it.”

cat discussions aside, the times the both of you actually get a good night rest is heavenly.

the first thing you’ll see is hitoshi laying right next to you, his hold tightens when you try to leave the bed for the bathroom/kitchen

and ultimately, your movements cause him to wake up, causing hitoshi to haul you towards him closer than ever.

he’s the one that makes breakfast usualky, so when you’re sitting down after setting up the table

you just,,

GAWK AT HIS BACK

his back profile is top tier. and he knows it, why? because he’ll cook breakfast shirtless omg

and the rest of the day will be spent taking impromptu naps, watching documentaries, and making interesting debates

this purple haired boyfriend of yours takes care of the spiders and cockroaches. sometimes he’ll murder kill them whenever they start flying, or if it manages to crawl onto you

most of the times, he’ll just grab a broom and sweep them outside.

whenever you wash the dishes, he’ll sneak up behind you, and cuddle you— holding you by the waist as he takes in your scent

practically does the same whenever you do laundry, and encourages you to do the same whenever he does the laundry/dishes

hops in the shower whenever you’re in the shower— and offers to wash your back when you can’t reach that one pesky spot

or he’ll just sit on the toilet as you do your thing, handing you things like your shampoo, or your body wash whenever you ask

and it never gets uncomfortable, since you can practically tell when he enters the bathroom and you can always kick him out if you didn’t want him there

plus, he has no malice intent. your house is a safe place, and he wants you to feel at peace in your own bathroom— let alone house

so in short? domestic shinsou hitoshi is life <3

Time Raiders: Or, And Here You Were Thinking The Lost Tomb’s Wu Xie Was The Worst Case Scenario Gay Disaster

Coping with stress and deadlines=comfort shows…not 100% sure how this universe became my comfort shows but here we are.

We open with your usual “What the fuck” background wherein there’s a snake empress and her bae something something scheme and we meet our Zhang Qiling—we actually get to see the qilin that is contained?represented? In his sweetass tattoo before we get a brief history of Wu Xie as a prepubescent house-breaking disaster who achieves one (1) coin that Will Be Significant.

Zhang Qiling is a grumpy little fucker, not yet in his hoodie noir aesthetic stage but slightly more sociable here! if by sociable we mean he gets into fights during the usual Wu family “this will be easy peasy haha nothing to worry abt” pre-tomb raiding get-together, where he finally encounters bebe Wu Xie! Who is being an adorable pain in the ass getting in everyone’s way because after all it’s a day ending in y.

The precious deer himself, Lu Han, is our Wu Xie. I actually found myself really enjoying his portrayal—he just looks incredibly innocent and sweet, nonstop 🥺, with a mischievous little smile. Also, we get facets of Wu Xie’s personality established here that foreshadow how he will grow into the mess we all adore and facepalm over: his intelligence and curiosity outweigh silly things like “basic self preservation” and “not dangerous shit” and we get a glimpse of that dark humor. On the pingxie front, we see the origins of his immediate and relentless insistence on Getting To Know Zhang Qiling, aka the beginners guide to stalking someone.

Normal people: nice to meet you, how are you doing?

Wu Xie: *assigns Zhang Qiling a name, aims gun at his own face to test Zhang Qiling’s niceness, takes pictures of him every five minutes*

Zhang Qiling: hope this doesn’t awaken something in me—

Xiao Ge is thus clearly in crisis from the beginning where he is first to flirt (?????) by…cutting off Wu Xie’s necklace and then handing it back to him? Idk maybe this is second base for the Zhangs. Anyway it’s clear that he’s already like “isn’t there a cutie pie moppet club meeting that’s missing its president oh god I think he’s cute fuck fuck fuck”. The rest of Wu squad isn’t as fleshed out; Wu San Xing seems borderline competent, which is weird for the wine uncle, although Pan Zi is his usual perky BAMF self. We get Pangzi yayyy!! Albeit at first not on the pals side. Currently working for Hendrix, an old white man kinda explorer who watches from his high tech little lab. Also Pangzi def brought a microwave burrito to the tomb raid and he’s right—and frankly Ah Ning can do whatever she wants, she’s sexy and badass.

There’s also a strange moment where Zhang Qiling asks Wu Xie the question everyone in the audience, his entire family, god, tomb zombies etc have wondered: why are you, with your dark academia outfit and chipmunk charm, here on this trip? And we actually get a straight answer!! From WU XIE OF ALL PEOPLE. He’s trying to figure himself out as a person, he is incredibly curious, and he has peak bebe of the family energy in admitting that the more people tell him not to go, he wants to go. Although to begin with, his main role is nerding out and snapping pictures of everything while flirting with Zhang Qiling. Love that for him.

Meanwhile, Wu Xie is like 🥺what if…our first date was in this tomb?? And Zhang Qiling is like, I have no choice but to kiss you, I mean protect you, …and we get these big smiles and outright laughs from him??? Which isn’t the Xiao Ge I know, but for some reason I think it fits here with sheltered lil Doe-Eyes McDimple.

And then there are spontaneous tornadoes and something happening in outer space. Sure. Tbh at this point in this universe I’m not even surprised. Something something snake empress, something something key, etc. The tomb-raiding plot unfortunately interferes with what was shaping up to be a great first date for pingxie, and Wu Xie sets off a cool lighting system for what is undoubtedly the first and last time he will ever make a good decision in a tomb raid.

Sure enough, like two minutes later he plays with some little puppet musical instrument and the puppet’s eyes MOVE. Upsetting. And then the tomb trap fuckery commences—hallucinations, choreographed dance/escapes from swords, pingxie’s first dramatic “catch you in my arms” and Wu Xie participates in the long tradition of “twink plays the flute to ward off bad shit” Good times. I do like that we get a glimpse of how selfless Wu Xie is capable of being—he ends up on a collapsing floor and is all #pingxiepriorities and wants to get Zhang Qiling’s memories for him via camera instead of worrying abt his life. Classic xiaoge 🙁 and Wu Xie 💀 😍 situation

A summary of the peak action scene:

Time Raiders: there aren’t any snakes in this one

Me: oh whew what a nice break

Time Raiders: there are extremely aggressive worms

Time Raiders: also a Venus fly trap woman

Awkward Situation

Movie/Game/Show: My Hero Academia Dynamic: Izuku Midoriya/Reader (Current romantic) - Katsuki Bakugou/Reader (Previous romantic) Warnings: idk divorce?, spoilers for katsuki's hero name Summary: Katsuki hates his ex-wife's new husband. ~~~

What an awkward situation.

“So, Dynamight and Deku, you two have… a little something in common, correct?”

Katsuki rolled his eyes, “If you’re referring to (Y/n), then fuck off. She’s a person, not a quality of our character.”

Quick to agree, Izuku nodded, “She’s her own being, not a part of our own. That’s unfair to her.”

Those questions were so tiring.

“Even so, is it not strange that a civilian would go between Japan’s top two heroes?”

“She’s our childhood friend, of course, she’d know both of us personally,” Katsuki grumbled into his mic, “If you’re trying to insinuate my ex-wife’s a gold-digger, I’ll punt you into the fucking sun.”

Izuku didn’t like assuming at the worst times, but there were just certain things he couldn’t put up with. And, believe it or not, but someone blatantly insulting his wife was one of those things, “I’m afraid that if you’re to continue your baseless accusations, I’ll have to go. Unless you have something important you actually want to talk about.”

“I’m not implying anything, you come to your own conclusions.”

“‘Not implying anything,’ my ass,” Katsuki shoved himself up from his seat, “This is bullshit. I have to pick up my fuckin’ kid anyway.”

Katsuki huffed as he left the studio - what a bullshit interview. Bringing up his ex-wife like that, as if she was relevant to his life as a hero. Digging out his car keys, the blond shook his head - those idiots didn’t even know (Y/n)’s maiden name let alone her thought process in marrying fucking Deku. He knew he couldn’t control her actions, and as far as he was concerned she could marry whoever she wanted, but God, Deku? Really?

Suddenly, he remembers Mina’s incessant teasing.

“She tried out aggressive and decided she likes sofites more, huh?”

The only thing Deku had going for him, Katsuki thought as he started his car, was he was a good step-father to Daiki. That’s all he’s willing to give the pipsqueak.

Good thing for Katsuki, it was the weekend, meaning he got to spend time with Daiki anyway. Every weekend he’d pick up his 5-year-old from school before going over for Friday night dinner with (Y/n) and her lapdog husband - then Daiki would gather his things and they could leave to Katsuki’s house. It was less time than he wanted but he was mature enough to understand that as a single hero, he wouldn’t have the ability to be around nearly enough - compare that to (Y/n)’s status as a stay-at-home mother and it was easy to see who should have Daiki through the week.

It was actually nice, the more he thinks about it he comes to realize. Sure, he felt the pain of a divorce but in the end this was better than putting their son into a home with parents who simply didn’t love each other the same way anymore. It was better this way.

“Aw, I’m sorry, baby,” (Y/n) frowns at the way her husband’s brows furrow and fists clench, “You just gotta learn to ignore those people.”

“I can when it’s about me,” Izuku pouted, arms coming around his wife’s waist and cheek pressing to her shoulder as she chops carrots, “but I hate when people talk about you like that. It’s not fair, you can’t even defend yourself when you’re not there.”

“Well,” she stops to think about a possible upside to the situation, “yeah, I got nothing. But you know how the media is, especially about situations like these.”

“Doesn’t mean I like it,” the man turned his head to burrow it into the crook of his wife’s neck, “I think I hate it, in fact.”

“Wow, how sweet.”

A series of knocks to the front door sent Izuku out of the kitchen and towards the den, letting in Katsuki and Daiki. As the pair were removing their shoes, Katsuki looked up at the other man - his eyes narrowing at his shirt.

Of course, he was wearing that bullshit shirt.

Daiki dashed into the kitchen to greet his mother as Katsuki crossed his arms and glared at Izuku’s t-shirt, “Why, the fuck, does that say ‘sweater’?”

“Fun?” Izuku shrugged, already turning and beginning to head back into the kitchen, “And fashion.”

“You look like a douche.”

“With peace and love, Kacchan, I don’t know if you have much room to talk.”

A/N: Okay so to the person who requested this I’m sorry it took so long before I actually wrote this. I think they requested it at around August or September the first time? But don’t worry because I’m definitely making this a series. This turned out to be like an introduction part for y/n, so I’m deciding to make this into a series/ mini series. I kinda fell in love with writing this so yeah expect there to be more of this.

Side note: I also kind of based her mutation on Tokoyami from My Hero Academia.

DARK SHADOW

It was a rainy afternoon when he came into her life. He was new to the institute and was set to be her new roommate. It wasn’t new for y/n to be roomed with someone despite the gender, they didn’t last long as their roommate anyway so it didn’t really matter to her. The longest roommate she had lasted 2 weeks before y/n’s mutation scared them off.

People were always afraid of her, and she was used to it by this time. She grew up with people being scared of her because of her mutation, especially when she was younger and didn’t know how to control her mutation. She never made any friends as a child because of it, and now that she’s grown up she doesn’t feel the need to make friends. She was fine with being alone because she never needed anybody, or at least that’s what she thinks.

Her mutation? Shadow manipulation. She could control the shadows and make them do whatever she wants. Shadow puppets, that was her favorite thing to do with her mutation but sometimes she would lose control over them and the puppets would go wild. This happened a lot during the night or whenever it was too dark, but that didn’t stop her at times even if she knew the risks. She wanted to learn how to control it. It wasn’t until she was 10 years old that her mutation manifested into something dark, one of her puppets wouldn’t leave no matter what she did. It was as if it had developed a mind of its own. She was scared of her own mutation for the first time in her life. That was when she was sent to Xavier’s so she could learn how to control it.

After a year of studying her mutation, Hank couldn’t explain how or why her shadow puppet wouldn’t leave and why it had developed a mind of its own. But the professor had a feeling that it was because she was lonely. She felt as if she needed a friend and somehow her mutation manifested that friend for her. As she grew older this shadow puppet, was no longer just a puppet for her. She learned that it was part of her now and actually became friends with it. As she slowly understood what the shadow was, she learned that her own emotions can be felt by the shadow and that they somehow have a psychic connection.

She never liked having anyone around, especially the roommates they tried to put her with. They were always too loud or too annoying. She didn’t have the hard to say this to them so at night when she’s asleep, her shadow would torment her roommate without her knowing. The next morning she’d wake up to the other side of the room completely empty.

That wasn’t the case for her current roommate. It has been about a month and Warren was still there. She wondered why that was. She was used to her roommates leaving after a week or two, but something made Warren stay. It made her curious. So, for the first time ever, she was going to try and befriend her roommate.

“H-hey.” She hesitantly said. Warren only looked at her direction with a questioning look on his face.

“Why are you here?” She asked trying not so sound rude.

“Uh? This is my room?” Warren raises an eyebrow at her.

“I fucking know that but I mean, why are you still here? It’s been a month, and you’re still here. I want to know why?” Y/N asks voice raising a little bit because of her frustration.

“Look, I’m not scared of you or your stupid dark shadow or whatever the fuck that thing is. I’ve been through so much worse than that thing tormenting me at night. So, whether you like it or not, I’m not going anywhere.” Warren says sitting up and places the comic book he was reading beside him.

“Tormenting you? Wait what?” she asks as this information is completely new to her.

“Very funny. I know you’ve been controlling that thing to scare me off so quit will you?” Warren says with a straight face as he looks her in the eyes.

“I- I really don’t know what you’re talking about though?” Her brow furrows as she conjures up her shadow puppet. “Puppet, care to explain what my roommate is saying?”

“I don’t know what he’s talking about.” Puppet says as it shakes its head.

“WOAH? That thing can talk?” Warren asks in astonishment.

“Yeah. It has a mind of its own so I don’t completely control it.” Y/N says as she looks down a little embarrassed. This was the first time she ever told anyone about her mutation because she doesn’t have friends in the institute. She does have a few acquaintances like Jean, but she’s not exactly what she considers a friend. “It has been like this since I was Ten.”

“T-that’s actually pretty cool.” Warren says standing up to circle around puppet. He tries to touch the shadow but it bursts out.

“HEY STOP IT!” Puppet says appearing larger to scare off Warren.

“Sorry. Puppet doesn’t like people much. And uhh…you really think it’s cool? That’s actually the first time I’ve heard that.” Y/N says bashfully.

“I mean yeah? I’ve faced a lot of different mutants in my cage fights but this is the first time I’m seeing something like this.”

“T-thank you.” Y/N says as she feels her cheeks heating. Wondering what this feeling was.

It was a little while later when Y/N was alone in their room that she actually talked to shadow puppet to confront them about the whole “terrorizing the roommates” thing. She wasn’t upset about it she just found it a bit too much. She didn’t exactly want a roommate but she didn’t like the idea of puppet scaring people off on purpose just so she’d be alone.

“Look, Puppet, I’m not mad about it. I just want to know why you did it.” Y/N said as she sat on her bed looking a puppet that was pacing the room.

“I had to. You were feeling really upset about having a roommate and I thought you didn’t want them so I took care of them for you.” Puppet looked at her with sad eyes.

“I don’t want a roommate, but that doesn’t mean what you did was right. Have you done this for all of my past roommates?” She looks at her shadow puppet curiously.

“NO! Yes.” Puppet looks at the ground, as if ashamed of what it’s done.

“What the fuck? You’ve done this for the past 9 roommates I had, 10 including Warren?” Y/N bursts in laughter at the revelation.

“Yes.” Puppet answers sadly.

“It’s fine, puppet. I’m not mad. Just don’t do it anymore.” Y/N says as puppet instantly perks up at the sentence.

“Ohhhhhhhh~ you like him don’t you?!” Puppet exclaims.

“Shut up.” Y/N rolls her eyes as she looks away.

“Ohhhhh my little baby Y/N has a crush on the bird boy!” Puppet says running around happily. Mumbling about how to it should start planning a wedding. Y/N smiles watching her puppet be excited for the first time.

It was a few months later and Y/N slowly started opening up to Warren more. For the first time in years, Y/N actually made a friend. It was weird for the other students to actually see Y/N smiling, but ever since she became friends with Warren, she has been more cheerful than she was in the previous years. Even shadow puppet wasn’t being aggressively scary anymore, well it still was but less often.

It didn’t take the other students to figure out that the reason behind Y/N’s change in demeanor was because of her new roommate. It was rare to see them without the other. Y/N and Warren suddenly became inseparable, and to the older students it was the cutest thing ever. The younger students were still afraid of the two since Y/N was the personification of darkness and Warren was one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

“Here.” Warren says as he hands a cup of Y/N’s favorite drink to her before class.

“Thanks.” Y/N says accepting the drink with a warm smile on her face. The two of them head to class with puppet trailing behind them.

“Is it just me or does y/n seem a lot cheerful since Warren came here?” Peter asked Scott as they saw the two walk past them.

“It’s weird don’t you think?” Scott shrugs as he looks at the pair walking to class.

“I THINK IT’S ADORABLE!! DON’T YOU JUST SHIP THEM?!” Puppet says, popping out from the darkness before rushing to catch up with Y/n and Warren.

“See? Weird. Even her puppet is acting strange.” Scott says furrowing his brows.

“A little bit. But this is the first time I’ve seen her like this. Maybe she’ll finally let us be her friends.” Peter says before rushing to his class.

My Hero Academia but make it... WEIRDCORE? DREAMCORE?

Anyway, the woman above is my OC, LaDonna. I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with her to be honest --and that’s literally what spurred me into making a little weirdcore/dreamcore BNHA au; she’s a character that’s been in my head for literally months, like I DO have a whole ass backstory and relationship log and set of special abilities, etc, all made up for her!! (I blame my maladaptive daydreaming for that though, LOL) ... Like, she literally has everything necessary I think to be a fully fledged OC with a small fanfic to go behind it... but at the same time, I just can’t help but instantly lose a large sense of attachment to her as soon as I try to bring her story in my head into physical fruition!! I don’t know what it is, it’s like... IDK, a large part of me I guess is trying to convince myself to keep her all to myself. Probably because the MHA faniverse is already full of so many damn OCs with wacky and/or wickedly strong asf quirks that it’s just like... there’s literally no need to contribute to that shit, LOL. Especially when MHA is actually in its final stages of the story anyway (like, SLIGHT SPOILERS --- we literally just got introduced to the U.A. traitor (that we all thought was a hoax of a subplot at some point, LOL) --this manga is DEF getting ready to come to an end!) ... IDK, all I know is despite that, I made a little something, something with the character LaDonna anyway.

In this seemingly random ass scene, Deku realizes he’s in a strange world, and upon seeing the first (human) face since being stuck in that dimension, he can’t help but immediately ask the questions that need to be asked!!

But will LaDonna answer him? And will she answer him honestly?

Sci-fi

Scythe by Neal Shusterman: in a future free from pain, disease, and war, people can live forever. ‘scythes’ are given the power to decide who lives and who dies to preserve the balance. sad and kinda gives of hunger games vibes, if you like that.

Neuromancer by William Gibson: basically invented the cyberpunk genre. strange and removed protagonists. (a team of computer hackers have to face off against an evil AI). you kind of dislike everyone and suddenly you’re crying over them. one of those trippy sci-fi classics.

The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut: very beautiful and very very sad (same author as slaughterhouse five). the richest man in america has to face a martian invasion. more about free will and bad people doing good things than a plot that makes any kind of sense.

The Man in the High Castle by Philip K Dick: set in an alternate universe where the germans and japanese won world war two. not really like the tv show at all- it’s not an action story, and there’s not really the hope to somehow fix the world that drives a lot of dystopia stories. instead its about how people survive and connect to one another in a hopeless society.

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow: a supercomputer convinces the leaders of the world to keep the peace for hundreds of years by taking their children hostage and obliterating any city that disobeys. what happens to the hostage protagonists when war seems inevitable? lots of morally fraught decisions and characters slowly losing their identity. (plus a fun lesbian romance)

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson: a brilliant mathematician and a dedicated marine fight to keep the ultra secret in world war two. fifty years later, a tech company discovers what remains of their story. one of the most memorable sequences in the book is a japanese soldier slowly becoming disillusioned with his nation and horrified by the war even as he continues to fight.

Blade Runner by Philip K. Dick: another one of those sci-fi classics that’s not at all like the movie. there is a bounty hunter for robots, though, as well as a weird religion that probably is referencing catholicism and a decaying society with a shortage of pets. kind of a trip.

Wilder Girls by Rory Power: girls trapped in a boarding school on an isolated island must face a creeping rot that affects the animals and plants on the island as well as their own bodies. the protagonists will do anything to survive and keep each other safe. very tense (and bonus lesbian romance whoo)

The Fifth Season by N K Jemisin: three women are gifted with the ability to control the earth’s energy in a world where those who can do so are forced into hiding or slavery. some veryyyy dark choices here but lots of strong female characters.

Historical Fiction

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters: two victorian lesbians fall in love as they plot to betray each other in horrific ways. lots of plot twists, plucky thieves, gothic settings, and a great romance.

Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiwicz: a powerful roman soldier in the time of Nero plots to kidnap a young woman after he falls in love with her, only to learn more about the mysterious christian religion she follows. very melodramatic but some terrific prose.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr: a blind girl in France and a brilliant German boy recruited by the military struggle through the chaos of the second world war. ends with a bang (iykyk.) very sad, reads like poetry.

Boxers by Gene Luen Yang: graphic novel reveals the story of a young boy fighting in the boxer rebellion in early twentieth century china. the sequel, saints, is also excellent. beautifully and sympathetically shows the protagonist’s descent into evil- the reader really understands each step along the way.

Fantasy

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake: three triplets separated at birth, each with their own magical powers, have to fight to the death to gain the throne. lots of fun honestly

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo: everyone in these books is highly problematic but you love them all anyway. a ragtag game of criminals plan a heist on a magical fortress. some terrific tragic back stories, repressed feelings, and revenge schemes.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King: idk how to describe these frankly but if you can put up with King’s appalling writing of female characters they’re pretty interesting. fantasy epic about saving the world/universe, sort of. cowboys and prophecies and overlapping dimensions and drug addicts galore.

The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud: lots of fun! a twelve year old decides to summon a demon for his cute lil revenge scheme. sarcastic demon narrator. lighthearted until s*** gets real suddenly.

Elegy and Swansong by Vale Aida: fantasy epic with machiavellian lesbians and enemies to lovers to enemies to ??? to lovers. charming and exciting and lovely characters.

The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen: an orphan boy must compete with a few others for the chance to impersonate a dead prince. really dark but very tense and exciting and good twists.

The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu: fantasy epic. heroes overthrow an evil empire and then struggle as the revolution dissolves into warring factions. interesting world building and three dimensional characters, even if they only have a small part.

Circe by Madeline Miller: the story behind the witch who turns men into pigs in the odyssey. madeline miller really said, i just used my classics degree to write a beautiful gay love story and now im going to write a powerful feminist retelling because i can. queen. an amazing and satisfying book that kills me a lil bit because of the two lines referencing the song of achilles.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer: the tragic backstory for the queen of hearts in alice in wonderland. a little predictable but very fun with a compelling protagonist

A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) by George RR Martin: ok I know we all hate GRRM and rightfully so but admittedly these books do have some great characters and great scenes. they deserve better than GRRM though. also he will probably never finish the books anyway....

A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket: not really fantasy but not really anything else either. plucky, intelligent, and kind children fight off evil plots for thirteen books until suddenly you realize the world is not nearly as black and white as you thought.

Classics

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: gothic romance!! a new wife is curious about the mysterious death of her predecessor in a creepy old house in the British countryside...good twists and lovely prose.

A Separate Peace by John Knowles: not really morally ambiguous but one awful decision suddenly has awful consequences and certain people are haunted by guilt forever.... really really really beautiful and really really really sad. boys in a boarding school grow up together under the shadow of world war two.

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy: while imperial russia slowly decays a beautiful young woman begins a destructive affair. a long book. very russian. the ending is incredibly tense and well written.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding: I think you know the plot to this one. the prose is better than you remember and the last scene is always exciting.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie: one by one, the guests on an island are slowly picked off. one of Christie’s darkest mysteries- no happy ending here! very tense and great twists.

Contemporary

The Secret History by Donna Tartt: inspired the whole dark academia aesthetic. college students get a little too into ancient greece and it does not end very well. lovely prose but I found the characters unlikable.

Honorable Mentions

The Dublin Saga by Edward Rutherford: has literally a billion protagonists, but some of them are morally ambiguous ig? follows a few families stories’ from the 400s ad to irish independence in the 20s. beautifully captures the weight and movement of irish history.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer: how morally ambiguous can you be if you’re, like, eleven? a lot if you’re a criminal genius who wants to kidnap a fairy for your evil-ish plan apparently!

Redemption by Leon Uris: literally my favorite novel ever. the sequel to Trinity but can stand alone. various irish families struggle through the horrors of world war one. the hero isn’t really morally ambiguous, but the main theme of the novel is extremely bad people suddenly questioning their choices and eventually redeeming themselves. sweeping themes of love, screwed up families, redemption, and patriotism.

The Lymond Chronicles and House of Niccolo by Dorothy Dunnett: heroes redeem themselves/try to get rich/try to save their country in early renaissance Europe. if I actually knew what happened in these books I'm sure it would be morally ambiguous but its too confusing for me. in each book you spend at least a third convinced the protagonist is evil, though. lots of exciting sword fights, tragic romances, plot twists, and kicking english butt.

Bonus: Protagonist is less morally ambiguous and more very screwed up and sad all the time

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt: you know this one bc its quoted in all those quote compilations. basically the story of how one horrible event traumatizes a young man and how he develops a connection to a painting. really really really good.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro: hard to describe but strange... not an action novel or a dystopia really but sort of along those lines. very hopeless.

I think you recced fma and fma brotherhood and i was thinking about starting Shingeki no Kyoji as well, but im not in the mood for those really

not a fan of SnK tbh lol i think i’ve told you that before. right i remember recommending FMA! but that was it? that’s fair, sometimes you’re not in the mood for something.

anyway i’m going for manga here not anime (if you want anime tell me and i’ll think about it better cause as i’ve said before i haven’t watched anime in years)

D.Gray-man - Set in a fictional 19th century England, D.Gray-man is the story of Allen Walker, a 15-year-old boy who roams the earth in search of Innocence. Washed away to unknown parts of the world after the Great Flood, Innocence is the mysterious substance used to create weapons that obliterate demons known as akuma. - It’s still ongoing (only gets updated like 4 times a year nowadays i think?) and its one of my favorites ever. The drawings get really fucking pretty as time goes on. Idk how far the anime went or if it’ll ever finish.

Akatsuki no Yona - Being in love with a man of a lower rank was perhaps the only problem in Yona's otherwise peaceful life as a princess, until her world is irrevocably changed and she is forced to flee from her sheltered existence. - also still ongoing and that summary doesn’t do it justice, it’s about a princess that runs away with her bodyguard because someone kills the emperor (her dad) and she then goes looking for the “dragons” that are supposed to protect her, it’s amazing to see how she grows and changes, very good characters tbh. the anime also only had 1 season and i don’t know if it’ll ever get a second one.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun - At Kamome Academy, rumors abound about the school's Seven Mysteries, one of which is Hanako-san. Said to occupy the third stall of the third floor girls' bathroom in the old school building, Hanako-san grants any wish when summoned. Nene Yashiro, an occult-loving high school girl who dreams of romance, ventures into this haunted bathroom... but the Hanako-san she meets there is nothing like she imagined! Kamome Academy's Hanako-san... is a boy! - also ongoing lol ghosts!! and fantasy like stuff, in the modern world, i really enjoy it. and i think there’s an anime as well but idk how far along it is.

Jujutsu Kaisen - Yuuji is a genius at track and field. But he has zero interest running around in circles, he's happy as a clam in the Occult Research Club. Although he's only in the club for kicks, things get serious when a real spirit shows up at school! Life's about to get really strange in Sugisawa Town #3 High School! - also fantasy/supernatural stuff. i guess u can kinda see what kinda stuff i enjoy LOL it’s also ongoing. i think there was an announcement there was gonna be an anime.

Ghost Hunt - The decrepit building was condemned long ago, but every time the owners try to tear it down, "accidents" start to happen-people get hurt, sometimes even killed. Mai Taniyama and her classmates have heard the rumors that the creepy old high school is haunted - this one is older, i remembered it ‘cause i was just recommending a bunch of ghost stuff, but this one is....a lil more serious. There is anime as well, and i remember there was at least one episode that scared the shit outta me, so this one is a bit more horror like, it’s really good tho. Completed.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto - In the imperial court, a young woman is put into servitude, Maomao. The tale is just beginning for the woman doctor/pharmacist from the red-light district, as rumors circulate about the emperor's children's lives being short-lived. Her curious nature and thirst for knowledge pushes her to action. To satisfy her curiosity, this young doctor/pharmacist will investigate the origin! What is shifting in the imperial court..!? - ongoing and very fun, the MC is very smart and a bit of weirdo, there is also an ongoing chinese (i think) novel. pretty sure there isn’t an anime.

Raise wa Tanin ga Ii - Somei Yoshino is a high school girl, born and bred in a yakuza family, but that hasn't stopped her from living a peaceful life - that is, until meeting her fiancé, Miyama Kirishima! - completely different from what i’ve recommended so far. if you like interesting but fucked up relationships this would be a fun read, and the MC looks meek at first but when her shit flips it’s super fun, the dude is off the fucking rails tho lol ongoing

Anyway this was just off the top of my head and I didn’t think about it too hard. But if what you wanted was anime tell me so. Or if you have in mind the kinda stuff you’d rather read or watch tell me, since this was more on my kinda taste than anything else. You could always watch Boku no Hero Academia that one’s pretty big right now and enjoyable. And I love Tokyo Ghoul but i need to be in the mood for that one ‘cause it’s a bit fucked up lol

im a hufflepuff, scorpio, i go by she/they pronouns, i loveeee grungy/punk rock 70s/80s music, i love reading!!! especially classic literature!!! i love horror films but not particularly gory ones, more like psychological thrillers. but i also love period dramas, and musicals. god i love musicals. i love art and baking and glitter and things and the smell of salt air. i guess i’m quite grungy/alt myself? in clothes and makeup and just. general vibes? idk honestly i’m just a mess. my hair is shoulder length and i’ve bangs (yes i cut my hair and bangs myself. i do not regret it at all) and i’m constant dyeing it different colours and ways. i’m generally loud and laugh a lot and all the time and i can be quite chaotic. i’m not very academic. i love physical affection!!! im also a hopeless romantic 🙄🙄. i think that’s all!

Prompt Idea - My Hero Academia x Another

This is admittedly a strange idea, but an idea nonetheless. 😀

So I love angst, especially in fanfiction. If a student went through the traumatic experience of ANOTHER in that cursed class, well thered be plenty of it wouldn't it? (IDK if they forget after everything, I think they do, but disregard that lol).

Could you just imagine a student of Class-1A transferring from there? It would be their biggest secret and greatest haunting. Admittedly seeing the deaths of your classmates - especially in such abrupt, unexpected and brutal ways - would be nightmare fuel (cue angst), and not to mention, would be cause for a bit of hardened character. Sure villains are evil and cause great destruction and all that, want to break down society and all that, but what is that compared to seeing your classmate be impaled through the throat with an umbrella or even seeing the headless corpse of another? Could you imagine the constant fear, the constant worry and litany of "Am I next?", the paranoia that could spring and unhealthy habits?

They could hide it, but the teachers of UA would definitely notice something was amiss with their student. Why hide it, however? Well, could you imagine the sheer disbelief?

"How is that possible?"

"Why haven't we heard about it?"

"Is it the work of a quirk?"

Etc.

In Class-A, said student would probably be very different from the others as a result of said events, maybe religious or maybe superstitious. Maybe as a way to try to subconsciously avoid another bloody disaster. The others would probably wonder about that, like why he/she make sure to carefully walk stairs, adamantly avoid elevators, and so on. And that PTSD from watching tour teacher that committed suicide, in such a manner in front of their class?!

But which student, I wonder? It was a small town, so Yaoyorozu, Iida, Bakugo, and Todoroki would be less than likely to be there. Maybe Ojiro? Uraraka? Or it you're particularly creative, an OC! (Preferably male, imo).

Anyway, this was just an idea!! If anyone likes this for writing please tell me!

hey there!! this is my first time in lgc and i’m super excited to be here! i’ve been eyeing this place for a while and i’m glad i finally mustered up the nerve to join. this is cho yunhyeong, 21, works part time at his local gs25. he’s been a trainee for little over a year and is hoping to eventually debut in a band! he plays the bass and sings a little bit, and he also wants to get into songwriting and composition eventually. he’s generally kind of a weird kid--super spacey, often distracted, your local space nerd--but he’s a good egg in spite of that. compared to some of the other trainees, he’s pretty aimless and chill, but he does genuinely love music and performing, so...!

quick facts:

born and brought up in seoul - very local, most comfortable in his neighbourhood, the most exciting vacation he ever took was to busan (and it was #lit). his parents own the best hot pot restaurant in seoul, and yeah he’s biased but that doesn’t mean it’s not true!

has an older brother currently in law school and their relationship is best described as ‘i tolerate you’. they’re complete opposites - his brother is super driven and loud and outgoing while yunhyeong is not so they’ve never really clicked beyond the fact that they are siblings and therefore are obligated to love each other

was the quiet kid growing up, had a very chill and subdued personality. didn’t really speak unless spoken too, didn’t play much with others. most of the time he kept to himself and focused on his hyperfixations - first, it was dinosaurs, and then space! and he’s been stuck with space ever since

his mom put him in music lessons when he was younger in hopes that a relatable hobby might help him make friends?? also that it’d work as a conversation starter but it didn’t because yunhyeong remained as weird and solitary as ever! he did fall in love with music as a result though

in high school he decided to branch out and make friends by starting a band - new age sexy aliens or NASA for short. his recruitment process was like: whoever shows up to join is part of the band! it worked out for the best since he and the band members got really close

they started off playing covers but then branched out into their own original music (yunhyeong helped write some of their lyrics). most of their songs used heavy space imagery and they were really pretty but also low key about aliens

yunhyeong loves aliens

nasa had a pretty dedicated fanbase both online and in their school! did well, were thriving, living their best lives and playing hella gigs, and then their lead singer got scouted by an entertainment company. it was the beginning of the end for them; the rest of the members went their own ways as well and the band officially disbanded in 2018 rip

yunhyeong started to busk on/off since he wasn’t attending university and didn’t really know what the heck else he wanted to do with his life outside of the band, and that’s where he got scouted by legacy! joined the company because like... well... why would he not...

wants to debut in a band if he can... and focus on songwriting and music composition as a secondary career path. he isn’t like... super motivated though? has always had issues with setting goals and being ambitious... he’s more like, eh, i’m just gonna go where life takes me!

personality wise, he’s still a pretty quiet kid unless you get him talking about one of his interests, in which case he will never shut up EVER. he gets distracted easily and will sometimes zone out when you’re talking to him but has a good memory of like, the most random shit you wouldn’t expect him to recall

easygoing as hell, rarely gets riled up over anything. on the flip side, he doesn’t really come across as sincere (even though he almost always is!) in his emotions because people are like... hm... just feels fake. tries to stay as positive as he can and doesn’t dwell on stuff that might upset him. sometimes people think he’s shallow! but he has #deepthoughts. he just doesn’t share them

unmotivated when it comes to most things! has no goals, no ambition, doesn’t care much for academia or being forced to like, conform to things. his mom calls him a free spirit but she’s probably just making excuses for him. it’s more like he’s stuck in some sort of limbo?? scared of growing up but scared of being left behind. it’s complicated

he’s really a sweet guy though. a little odd - he’s not the best at showing affection and sometimes he can be really... strange? offbeat? you never know what the fuck is going on in his head. but he’s a Human Being Just Like You (sadly) and simply trying his best to live every day

connection/plot ideas:

he didn’t really have many friends growing up, but still - childhood friends! maybe you were the exception. maybe you didn’t mind that he was awkward and quiet and a little weird! maybe you tripped and fell on the playground and he gave you a star-patterned purple band aid and you decided you would die for him. who knows!

friends in general who understand him and look @ him with fond exasperation... must be able to tolerate his antics. liking aliens is a bonus. jk, but he’s a sweet guy who loves his friends! please be kind to him

fans of his former band, nasa (or antis?). he was the bassist and a sub vocal and didn’t stand out too much compared to some of the other guys, but he always did the intros and he’ll happily talk about nasa all day! discuss the symbolism of their songs with him

exes? i genuinely cannot think of a single reason why anyone would want to date him but i feel like he’s had at least (1) relationship before... maybe you took a chance and after you started dating you were like, god, i’m running away

crushes, whether one-sided on his part or your part or reciprocated but you don’t know it yet?? he’s holding out for his alien bae but maybe you don’t know that and just think he’s like, this quiet mysterious pretty boy. maybe he thinks you’re cool for a human!

fellow trainees who can play instruments... yunhyeong needs someone to #jam with because playing the bass alone is kind of lonely (and since he’d like to eventually get on the band track, making some connections would be cool)

fellow trainees in general, especially ones in his training group!! he’s not as hungry for debut or as ambitious as some which means he’s a) non-threatening and b) chill to hang with. you could be into that or it could absolutely infuriate you since he doesn’t seem to be taking things seriously! maybe you think he doesn’t deserve to be here

met online on an alien enthusiast forum and you talk almost every single day about various theories and moves and all that kind of stuff but you’ve never met irl! and yunhyeong really wants to meet you in person!

idk bully him

you’re buying a bunch of weird shit from the convenience store where yunhyeong works at like 2 am and he has so many questions and won’t let you pay and leave until you answer them

alternatively, you find him sleeping on the job and you want to wake him up but the moment you touch his arm, he makes this high pitched screeching noise and you fall over and take an entire shelf of candy down with you

you invite yunhyeong out for drinks but he took one sip of soju and he’s a mess... you didn’t sign up to take care of a giant drunken baby but guess what! you will be! if he tries to kiss you, dodge him

you always bum free meals from yunhyeong’s parents’ restaurant because his parents think you’re his best friend. tbh you actually don’t really like him but he doesn’t realize it so he never bothers correcting his parents either!

you didn’t realize yunhyeong was allergic to cats and dogs and you brought your cat/dog near him and oh my god he is having the UGLIEST allergic reaction

yunhyeong can’t swim. you push him into a pool as a joke. chaos ensues

you play various video games together and yunhyeong is really good but he’s more interested in stardew valley than in league of legends and you keep pestering him to play with you dammit i need you on my team

you slipped a love letter under his door for one of his roommates but yunhyeong thought it was for him and now he keeps (kindly) rejecting you whenever you see him and you don’t even know how to react

yunhyeong loves smoothies and one day you catch him trying to blend a slice of pepperoni pizza into a smoothie because he is, and i quote, “tired of chewing”
