UNCASVILLE, CT – The Welterweight division has a bright future as Philadelphia’s Jaron “Boots” Ennis (27-0, 25 KOs, 1 ND) proved to be worthy of the hype behind him in stopping former Junior Welterweight champion Sergey Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) in a masterful performance.
Ennis, 23, utilized his size and speed advantages to control the pace and range in which the fight was contested. Whenever Lipinets attempted to use a jab to get inside, he was met with accurate counters.
Most impressively, Ennis was able to switch from orthodox to southpaw numerous times throughout the bout, proving successful in either position. Lipinets proved to have a sturdy chin, as he was able to take plenty of Ennis’ punches that landed clean on the chin.
However, it’s the shots that you don’t see coming that hurt you the most.
In the fourth round, Ennis landed a counter uppercut that sent Lipinets to the canvas signifying the beginning of the end for the former 140-pound champion.
Lipinets did have some pockets of success landing shots to the body and occasionally landing some clean overhand rights during exchanges. Still, Ennis took the punches well and kept working his game plan.
The fight concluded the sixth round when Ennis landed a two-punch right hook-uppercut combination that put Lipinets on his back. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. immediately halted the match giving Ennis the knockout victory at the 2:11 mark of the sixth round.
With the victory, Ennis became the first man to knock out Lipinets.
Ennis landed more than half of his power punches connecting with 91 out of 172 at a 53 percent connect rate.
Welterweight has always been one of boxing’s premier weight classes. With current titleholders Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. unwilling or unable to make a fight, Ennis is a breath of fresh air that the division will be in safe hands.
Ennis now has the boxing world’s attention and has the look of being a special fighter that will one day reign on top of all pound-for-pound discussions.

Mikey Garcia vs. Sergey Lipinets for 140-pound title

Since Mikey Garcia returned from an unwanted 2½-year hiatus over a contract dispute in July 2016, the three-division world champion has blown through three opponents. Among the three was a spectacular third-round knockout of then-lightweight champion Dejan Zlaticanin, and a 12-round, solid unanimous decision over Adrien Broner, a former four-division champion himself.
The lengthy layoff had little effect on Garcia, the heavy-handed slugger who picked up where he left off without missing a beat. One big reason was that Garcia stayed in the ring the entire time, working with young fighters trained by his older brother and former trainer of the year Robert Garcia.
On Saturday in San Antonio, Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) will try to make history and become a four-weight champion when he moves up super lightweight to take on IBF champion Sergey Lipinets, (13-0, 10 KOs) a 28-year-old Russian making his first title defense, in a 12-round bout at Freeman Coliseum (Showtime, 10:15 p.m. ET). Garcia’s shot at history lies in becoming the third fighter to capture titles at 126, 130, 135 and 140 pounds, joining some heady company in future Hall of Famers Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Garcia, 30, and 28-year-old Lipinets were supposed to fight on Feb. 10, but it was postponed for a month due to a right hand injury that Lipinets suffered sparring in training camp. Garcia is a decided favorite to win this fight, but does not take the Russian lightly despite his relative lack of experience.
“I’m very focused on Sergey Lipinets. The entire camp I’ve known what’s in front of me,” Garcia said. “I know he’s hungry and wants to defend his title. He knows what’s in front of him, so I know he’ll be in the best shape possible. Lipinets knows what a win over me will do for his career, and it’s my job to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Garcia passed up a shot at lightweight champion Jorge Linares to take this fight but says he has no regrets and believes in the long run it will have been worth it.
“I don’t have a specific goal in this sport but I know that I need to win more world titles in more weight classes,” he said. “I know that at the end of my career I’ll get the credit that I deserve.”
Fighting for the second time at 140 pounds but first for a title, Garcia is not sure it’s the most comfortable weight for him, but says he feels good.
“I’m fighting a bigger man naturally, so that’s something I have to get adjusted to but I still feel that my ability and my skills are enough to compete at the highest level with these men and that’s why I’m comfortable fighting at 140,” he said. “I still feel that 135 might be a better fit for me because I’m a little bit of a naturally bigger, stronger man at 135, but at 140 I feel just as good as far as my speed, my footwork and my reflexes.”
Lipinets says his hand is completely healed and will not be a negative factor Saturday.
“I have no concerns about my hand at all. My right hand is hungry and it’s going to be eating a lot on Saturday night,” he said. “I’m young, I’m hungry and I have a great team behind me. I’m fast, strong and I have all the confidence I need heading into this fight.”
