i very much need to hear about canaan house but there are cats <3

this AU is ENTIRELY driven by my need for dulcie septimus to interact with cats and say “nyah” to them!!! and then she gets to meet camilla and palamedes, too, i guess. 😊😊😊

here’s a small snippet of what i’ve written so far:

Gideon knelt next to Harrow on the sun-warmed metal of the dock. As the Reverend Daughter prayed on her knuckle beads, Gideon relied on the obfuscation of her hood and sunglasses to discreetly observe their surroundings.

Seven shuttles had landed in all, but there wasn’t enough time to determine which House still remained in orbit. Someone was coming to meet them—and Gideon wasn’t referring to the little old man in priestly white robes, who had been sidelined on his approach by a starched-looking pair in silver and white. No—a sleek, quadrupedal creature stalked towards them, presumably drawn by the clacking of the Reverend Daughter’s prayer beads.

Gideon’s eyes widened behind her sunglasses. She recognized this animal! She’d seen a few depictions of cats in her magazines, but it was still hard to believe that she was seeing one in-person. (It was the first creature she’d seen, really—the Ninth House was depressingly thin on animal life, unless you counted the glow beetles, which Gideon didn’t.)

More cats were approaching the dock now that one of their number had bravely ventured forth. They lolled about, basking in the warmth of the sun, and it was evident from their outstretched limbs and contently-shut eyes that this was a favorite pastime of theirs.

The first cat drew near them without any fear whatsoever, and Gideon stiffened at its approach. Some species, she remembered, were poisonous. No one on the landing dock seemed overly concerned, but—

The cat struck, batting at the strand of knuckle beads with its paws, and Gideon reflexively reached for her rapier. For the first time in living memory, Harrow’s fingers stalled partway through her prayer.

“Griddle,” said the Reverend Daughter in her most forbidding tones. “Remove this creature from my presence at once, or I will delight in violence.”

Then, ruining the effect, she sneezed.

do you think, in her most uncharitable moments, camilla ever blamed gideon for palamedes' death? not as a rational thought of course, and i'm sure she felt bad about it, but in the depths of the grief and pain and desperation - might it have been easier to place blame on the girl who kept her from getting to her heart before he went supernova and left her to collect the shards of his skull?

because camilla knew where palamedes had likely run off to after that fight. she had lost sight of him which was inexcusable but she had a target for which to aim as soon as the ninth stopped asking questions, except that gideon asked to go after him first; gideon asked for a moment alone with him, for camilla to watch over harrow while the latter got her sword, and then ran off to meet palamedes alone in the hall outside cytherea's room just before he went and killed himself. and camilla let her.

do you think pal would have paralyzed her if camilla had been there? do you think he could have? if gideon had just let cam go with her, if cam had just gone against gideon's requests and followed, she would have seen his face one last time, even if the result still ended up the same...

i think palamedes would���ve paralyzed camilla if she’d been there, even if the guilt of forcing her to witness his death firsthand would kill him a second time. to me, it echoes the line in nona the ninth where john says that g— wouldn’t have armed the nuke if p— was in range; palamedes wouldn’t have exploded himself if camilla was in the blast radius.

if multiple people were in the hallway outside of dulcinea's sickroom, i'm not sure whether palamedes would’ve had the power to restrain them all! but if camilla was there in gideon's place and it was a 1:1 replacement, i think things would’ve shaken out as in canon—except camilla might have been tempted to run towards the explosion, rather than away from it, when palamedes died and dropped the theorem holding her in place.

anyhow! to answer!

i read all four books in the span of a week, first the hunger games trilogy and then bosas. it was my first time reading them

i loved bosas, it was an excellent exploration of the nature of power, control and war. that one interview where collins is like. "enlightenment concept of just war has to be rotated through the character of coriolanus snow"? she delivers.

still, reading it was also an exercise in patience bc you go through the whole book knowing that the one thing that you as a reader really really want (coriolanus getting smashed in the face with a brick) won't be happening.

now as the most shocking revelation... honestly i can't say anything really shocked me? the prequel is so fantastically in tune with the og books that i was mostly giggling and kicking my legs over how fitting it all is. i guess the revelation just how close tigris and snow were was a "damn." moment.

favorite character.... hmmmmm... well, i liked sejanus a lot but honestly? i'd have to say reaper. guy went full ophelia on everyone and it was a delight

finally, lol, considering that i read the books bc of the trailer i think it's safe to say i'll watch it. i'm not expecting much from it as far as adaptations go, because by removing access to coriyo's head he's gonna come off as waaaaay kinder than he is. they also seem to be shifting the focus to the love story and the og trilogy movies kind of failed spectacularly in preserving the emotional and philosophical core of the books. so i'm not expecting much from it as an adaptation.

that said, i think i'm gonna have a grand time. it has peter dinkage and viola davis and their characters hate one another!! it's got the student actors literally doing classic debate hand gestures and form!!! viola davis gets to be completely unhinged!!! the costumes and sets are wild and campy!! it's gonna be great!!!
