Where do you learn all these care specifics and scientific names and such? I've kept lots of critters (2 madagascar hissing roaches for a few years, some wild-caught adult grasshoppers and katydids for a few months, some mealworms into adulthood, etc) but I never knew stuff like what specific diseases they can catch and how to check, or how to tell different species of grasshoppers or whatever apart. Did you study this in college or just read up on things on your own? When I try to look up stuff like cockroach care I always end up with a million "how to kill nasty evil roaches because everyone hates them" articles.

I've been identifying bugs and using scientific names since I was little, so the years of experience helps, but there are many very accessible sources to help make learning about bugs easier!

I started with a field guide a lot like this, although some of the more basic ones don't have even half of the things you could find (just the more common ones). good field guides should also have scientific names, so you can learn those alongside the common names. scientific names are often much more helpful than the common names since those can change with region and language, but also because many bugs just don't have a common name.

if you happen to be in the US or Canada, BugGuide is a very useful resource where you can ask ID or look at other's submissions. obviously it's fairly limited by range, but has some very nice records and helpful experts.

iNaturalist is also a very helpful tool. it's fun to explore your local critters as well as those all around the world with the map, and you can get pretty decent IDs from the community (though often non-experts and the AI identifier can both be very wrong).

various forums and social media are also great for talking to other keepers and learning about bugs in captivity from them. as much as I hate it, Instagram has a nice population of bug keepers and just chatting with them can give you a lot of helpful tips and strategies.

hello shark. my biggest hyperfication a few years ago was the (penguins part of the) madagascar series. boy was I excited when netflix made an original show all about the lemurs that was animated like the movies and everything.

boy was it so weird

so I don't know how much you know about the little brown one, mort, he is obsessed with king julien's feet and in all apparences before this show, was just a weird comic relief/heel. He was very dumb and foot obsessed and that was the joke

then came the show All Hail King Julien

Mort is centuries old. Mort sometimes disassociates between personalities or "different Morts" inside his head, one of them being his grandmother who knows secrets to the universe. If Mort drinks coffee, Smart Mort takes over his body and suddenly he speaks with a trans-atlantic acent and knows literally everything. Mort's brain is actually a pocket universe where several deranged Morts lay relatively dormant for most of the show, until the Apoclypse happens and Mort has to go inside his own head to fight them back from clawing their way out into the world. He then has to fight his grandma Mort to the death in this head pocket universe.

An inventor man on the island creates a cloning machine, but it turns out that it is not cloning people, it is bringing in versions of them from alternate dimensions. Morts come out of it. Apparently there is one single dimension that is solely populated by Morts. at this point in the show, they are all referred to as Morts, he may be a lemur but he is his own species now. The Mort dimensions is lead by a Mort who is a Ghangis Kahn parody, Morticus Kahn. He leads every mort in the dimension like they are a hive mind.

So much shit happens in this show like penguins of madagascar was just about silly ninja secret agent penguins doing weird stuff. All Hail King Julien starts off as a funny, raunchy-humored at times show that is both more childish than it's successor, but takes on really weirdly complex themes for a show like this. The first season is like LOL JULIENS DUMBBB LETS DANCE TO EDM ALL DAY YAYYYY and the rest is about how mort is god and death and hell incarnate

I have never seen anyone talk about this and it lives with me forever because What The Hell Was I Watching??? I don't even know if you know anything about Madagascar but I saw you mention the lemurs and this happened.

Seen your answer about your favorite moments for each of the thea sisters in the special editions, so how about your favorites thea sisters moments in the main series? And also which one is your favorite book from the main series?

Okay so uhhh hmmm the last six books in the old artstyle are the ones I say where Thea Stilton peaked in adventure content (those being Old Castle, Blue Scarab Hunt, Prince's Emerald, Dancing Shadows, Orient Express, and Legend of the Fireflowers). Personally, I often flip back and forth between Old Castle, Blue Scarab Hunt, and Orient Express being my favorites because I have a soft spot for the first two (they were the first books I read in the series) and Orient Express is just goated in general

Orient Express is my current favorite, but expect it to change

OKAY FAVORITE MOMENTS, once again splitting it with lighthearted/dialogue moments, and important key moments in the plot

Lighthearted/dialogue moments:

Colette - Her literally becoming the embodiment of those cartoon characters yeeting their entire wardrobe over their head because they can't figure out what to wear for the occasion (Great Tulip Heist)

Nicky - That one time she made a dig at Violet because she slept in so hard that it made the girls late to their tournament day 1 (Roman Holiday)

Pam - When she called Ashvin the kid-friendly version of "a hot f#$kin' mess" (Ice Treasure)

Paulina - Her having to take a lotta copium from not having her phone or tablet with her in the jungle (Madagascar Madness)(I felt so called out ;w;)

Violet - Tie between the time she dunked on Enrico Mousetti's classist ass (Dancing Shadows) and "Well, in that case, we'd like to visit the castle while it's still standing." (Secret of the Old Castle)

Plot moments:

Colette - The time she did the classic "hot woman walks into the hallway" thing in Mystery in Paris

Nicky - THAT ONE TIME SHE CLIMBED ON TOP OF AND JUMPED OFF A SPEEDING FIRETRUCK (Big Trouble in the Big Apple)(I know she scaled a train in Orient Express, but this scene felt more badass)

Pam - Any and all chase scenes where she was driving ngl, woman carried (off the top of my head I can remember Blue Scarab Hunt and Prince's Emerald)

Paulina - Prince's Emerald, woman carried that book on her back and we love it, I hope she got a long, hot shower after that

Violet - Either the moment she figured out the giant boulder riddle in Blue Scarab Hunt, the time she big-brained the crap out of the mystery and told the girls that Fadhili was the traitor in Lion's Den, or uh the belowdeck scene in Ghost of the Shipwreck (I'm convinced that that was the moment that cemented Violet as my blorbo for second grade me), honorable mention goes to Violet tying a chess metaphor into the villain's strategy in Orient Express, said metaphor becoming the key to realizing what the villain was up to

Notice how the last six books appeared semi-frequently in my rankings? That's how goated they are :]

Honorable mention for a uh a scene in general is a scene between Vi and Paulina in Orient Express:

The woman enjoys the life to be certain, but still finds herself practicing her old thieving ways from time to time, playing with fire less for excitement, but more so as a means of keeping her core warm.

when me and my best friend from primary school were obsessed with madagascar i would be king julian and she would be maurice. when we were obsessed with the road to el dorado i was tulio and she was miguel. in our night at the museum phase i was the roman and she was the cowboy and we made up a theme song for ourselves and when these other kids begged us to let them into our inner circle we forced them to learn the song and perform chants about the characters we kinned and we sat in a circle and drew runes in the middle with chalk and forced them all to pledge allegiance to the cult and then when me and my best friend started growing distant we segregated the cult into two tribes and each of us led a different tribe and fought over a football which we pretended was the baby lemur from madagascar. and then i made a new best friend in my tribe and we started training for the hunger games in her garden after school every day and my old friend wrote me a letter saying she was ok with my new friendship as long as the new friend didn’t replace her as the tiny cowboy. then in our final year the three of us became best friends and walked to school together every day and made a new exclusive club just for us and then we mostly stopped talking when we went to different high schools but a few years ago i ran into one of them on the bus and started talking and i told her i was essentially in love with both of them and she was like yeah no me too that’s why we always pretended to be gay coded couples from movies you fucking idiot

1. Gaap Goemon ❤️ Mairimashita Iruma kun

Anyone who follows me probably know that he's my #1 favourite character. I love him so much. I spend hours doing something for this fictional character, even though it consumes my time and energy. But in the end, I feel happy. He's the most handsome guy in my eyes. He is sweet and cute, cooks and serves food for everyone, rescues the weak and takes care of them. His love is unconditional. I should stop here or this post would end up talking only about him!

2. Teufel Shaoron 😈💕- Makai no shuyaku wa ware ware da

Chubby cheeked Shaoron ❤️ he is a true High school boy. He reminds me of naughty ones at school. I can also see myself in him sometimes, having a rival who doesn't even know I've proclaimed them as my rival lol.. trying to be the best, getting into trouble, problems with best friends, goofing around..how is this different from a real high school? I love his fashion and bubbly nature ❤️ He makes mistakes, most of the time being naughty but he's a good boy. That's what a real boy his age is like.

3. Doraemon ❤️

Though I don't post about Doraemon, I love him and I love the whole show. It's heart touching, the relationship between Doraemon and Nobita. Nobita being an emotionally rich boy, his comfort is always Doraemon. This show has such a big emotional value. Doraemon is that friend who awaits him in his room eating dorayaki and the boy forgets all his school struggles and embraces his brother ❤️ there are no boundaries between them. I love Doraemon.

4. Kengo Asamura ❤️🥰- Monochrome Factor

A lot of people don't know Monochrome Factor. If you do, you're my friend. I love this manga and I love Kengo ❤️ He's like a caring big brother. Has been my comfort character for a long time. He's cheerful and cute, voiced by Hiroshi kamiya. His best friend is Akira Nikaido voiced by Daisuke Ono, who enters into a contract with a shadow man called shirogane voiced by Junichi suwabe. The trio is here right? MF is also an amazing fantasy High school story. In the end Kengo sacrifices his life (manga) but in the anime he's alive and I wish to believe that.

5. King Julien 👑

The king of Madagascar! He appears in his own series All Hail king Julien and in The penguins of Madagascar and Madagascar movies as well. Like Shaoron, king Julien is also a very realistic portrayal of humans. He's not at all perfect but he's just perfect to be loved, to kin yourself with and he conquers your heart like a king! He doesn't have the typical qualities of a king nor he tries to live up to others expectations. He rules the Kingdom his own way by not sacrificing his hobbies and interests. I want to be like him. We should all learn from him. We don't have to sacrifice everything for the sake of something great. We should be ourselves.

6. Naruto uzumaki 🥹❤️- Naruto, Naruto shippuden, spin off, Boruto

Naruto 🥰❤️ he made my childhood days magical. I heard the word ninja for the first time in Naruto. I first watched the English dub before getting access to internet and streaming sites. It took me a period of years to finish everything and I consider it as a personal record ☺️ Boruto is ongoing and I watch it too but my favourite is always Naruto. Especially the child Naruto who is naughty, stubborn and cheerful.

7. Xerxes Break 🍭🍬🍫- Pandora Hearts

Break is my favourite character from Pandora Hearts. ❤️ He is sweet toothed, wears fancy clothes and has the kind of fantasy vibe that inspires me. He is goofy despite carrying a burden in his heart and in his conversation with Oz about the Abyss he asks him something. "Did it(abyss) look like a broken toy box?" That touched me. That's the whole spirit of Pandora Hearts. A dystopian Alice in Wonderland ❤️

8. Kagura ❤️ - Inuyasha

Kagura is my favourite from Inuyasha. She's an antagonist but I love her. I wish she lived and married Sesshomaru or lived the life she wanted, free like the wind. I love her line " I am the wind, the free wind". She is so beautiful and I think as a little girl I fell in love with her.

9. Pratheek 🥰🍭 - Ra. One

He's the protagonist of the Indian musical movie Ra. One that focuses on a hero and villain from a game coming to life. The villain Ravan is after "Lucifer" (pratheek) the player who defeats him always, when he comes to life. Pratheek is the son of the video game developer. He reminds me of Shaoron.

10. Anjali ❤️😘 - kuch kuch hota hai

Also from Indian movie. Anjali played by my favourite actress Kajol, is one of my favourite tomboy characters. I love her so much 💝

Primate kin

Colugos. Not quite primates, but I love them anyway.

Basal primates

Basal animals are those which are closer to the base of a particular section of the tree of life. A more traditional word for this concept is primitive. So for example, amphibians are basal land vertebrates. Here I have classified basal primates as any which are not monkeys and/or apes, including Strepsirrhini and Tarsiiformes.

Lemurs

A group of basal primates found exclusively on the island of Madagascar.

New world monkeys

Monkeys which are native to the “new world”, or the Americas. They are the only non-human primates found here. It is thought they arrived to the Americas tens of millions of years ago, when a group of African monkeys were blown out to sea by a storm. They survived the journey across the Atlantic on a natural raft of floating vegetation, and founded a new group of primates: Platyrrhini.

Old world monkeys

These are monkeys native to the “old world”: Africa and Eurasia. Also known as Cercopithecidae.

Apes

A group of large old world monkeys most recognisable by their lack of a tail. More formally known as Hominoidea.

Lesser apes

Consists of all the gibbon species, found in the treetops all across Southeast Asia.

Great apes

Includes orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans. All living species of great ape have been documented using tools.

Odd-toed ungulates

Odd-toed ungulates, of course, have an odd number of hooves. They include horses, tapirs, rhinos, and their extinct relatives. They might actually be less closely related to even-toed ungulates than you’d think!

All ungulates from here on out are Even-toed ungulates:

These have an even number of hooves, and include most living hoofed mammals. Whales are technically included in this group, but they’re best left for another time.

Consists of camels, llamas, and their extinct relatives. They are often adapted for harsh climates such as deserts and mountains.

Multituberculate Earth: Miocene

Two apex predators, the microcosmodontid Shah rajah and the kogaionid Arsinoedon mastix. The latter is dominating the kill, but the former will ultimately outlast it due to it less specialised diet. By corvarts.

Balmier than the previous Oligocene, the Miocene in our timeline was pretty much “out with the old, in with the modern”, creating the baselines for the modern flora and fauna. In this timeline, similar changes similarly occured, causing drastic turn overs in flora and fauna.

By far the most well known example is the collision between Afro-Arabia and Eurasia, causing a biotic interchange between the two previously seperated continents. Giant predatory kogaionids came face to face with saber-toothed microcosmodontids, sudamericids and adalatheriids met their galulatheriid cousins, and herds of hopping and running boffids entered Eurasia while hooved lambdopsalids entered Africa. To the end of the period, Africa would even collide with the Iberian Peninsula, shutting down the Tethys for good. The effects of this faunal interchange were complex and uneven; for instance lambdopsalids took various large sized niches in open environments and small sized ones in forested environmentswhile boffids took smaller sized hopping niches in open environments and large sized bipedal niches in forest environments.

Zealandia finally emerges fully, allowing us to examine the unique Saint Bathans Fauna, which includes the unique indigenous zealanditheres.

For the most part, things stay the same in Anatarctica, South America and Australia, though climatic shifts make some megafaunal groups like mesungulatids and sudamericids decline.

Eucosmodontids in particular witness a massive ecological radiation. Mouse-like forms spread as grain-filled praries expand, predatory ones both in response to their kin-prey as well as the decline of microcosmodontids and flightless kogaionids and ptilodontoideans.

On air, flying mammals are as suchessful as ever. In fact, they even produce one sophont species, Mazda sraosha, the first civilization this timeline has ever known.

On the seas, things haven’t been as dangerous as the Cretaceous. Giant marine reptiles are now joined by giant fully marine mammals as well as a return of teleosts and coalacanths, capped by gigantic sharks that can probably be classified as Otodus megalodon.

Biotic regions. Red is Eurasia-Africa and includes lambdopsalids, boffiids, eucosmodontids, microcosmodontids, sudamericids, adalatheriids, galulatheriids, kogaionids and afroptilodontoideans; Green is North America and contains eucosmodontids, microcosmodontids, lambdopsalids, boffiids, sudamericids and adalatheriids; Lime is the Caribbean which has ferugliotheriids, caribboptilodontoideans, afroptilodontoideans and secondarily terrestrial taeniolabidids; Yellow is South America with has monotremes, dryolestoids, ferugliotheriids, bofiids, galulatheriids, sudamericids, greniodontids and notoptilodontoideans; Black is Australia which has monotremes, dryolestoids, ferugliotheriids, sudamericids, greniodontids and notoptilodontoideans; Violet is Antarctica which is similar but with lower biodiversity; Blue is Madagascar which has bofiids, adalatheriids, sudamericids, kogaionids and eucosmodontids; Pink is Zealandia which has monotremes and zealaditheres.
