Mauricio Pochettino reacts to Chelsea's 5-0 drubbing against Arsenal | Football
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The west Londoners were second-best throughout Tuesday’s match (Picture: Getty)Mauricio Pochettino has criticised his Chelsea side’s performance in their 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal and says they ‘did not compete’ with the Gunners. It took just four minutes for the north Londoners to take the lead on Tuesday night at the Emirates, with Leandro Trossard slotting in at the near post. Chelsea threatened occasionally on the break but the best chances fell to Arsenal, though they had to wait until the second half to add to their lead. Quick-fire goals from Ben White and Kai Havertz shortly after the restart put Mikel Arteta’s side in complete control, with that pair both bagging braces to record a massive victory. The result puts Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League table while Chelsea remain marooned in ninth place and Pochettino was far from happy with his team’s performance afterwards, particularly their sloppy start to the second half. Asked what went wrong against Arsenal, Pochettino told TNT Sports: ‘Well I think we started the game not so well, we conceded the goal and then it was difficult for us to recover for this goal. ‘And then I think the team started to compete after 10 or 15 minutes. We were talking at half-time that we cannot approach the game and start the half how we started the first half.
Tumblr media
Arsenal ripped through Chelsea in a dominant display (Picture: Getty)‘But we started again showing too little energy and did not compete in the way that we needed to compete and then when we conceded the third goal I think it was so easy for Arsenal to manage the game. ‘And for us it was difficult to fight for an objective. And I think that describes the first 15 minutes and the first 15 minutes of the second half. I think we lose the game in there.’ He continued: ‘You need to be clinical. Against Manchester City three days ago I think we created many chances but we didn’t convert and we weren’t clinical. ‘Tonight the same thing happened. Such a difficult result, such a difficult performance because it’s not nice to see your team playing like this from the beginning of the game when you’re supposed to have full energy. More Trending Read More Stories‘That is the inconsistency after three days after you play a fantastic game against Manchester City, today we feel so disappointed with the game and with the performance.’ On playing without Cole Palmer at the Emirates, he added: ‘Today, more than the circumstances we didn’t compete from the beginning. ‘It was difficult to build the game against a team that is fighting for the Premier League. It’s not a coincidence that they are there, that’s why we need to be aware and we need to compete in a different way.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. THE GRAY CHILDREN - KEY RELATIONSHIPS / LIFE MOMENTS
warnings: mentions of nepotism, murder, age-gaps, abortion, aids crisis, predatory power dynamics, intrusive press, drug use, smoking, death, suicide, post-partum depression, overdose. minors, dni.
this isn't an exhaustive list, just relationships that would make some significant impact on the gray kids. you'll notice george and rosie don't have as much as their younger siblings, but that's simply because they moved around so often that long-term relationships weren't as easy to come by so it's not to say they didn't have them.
fair warning, violet's is pretty heavy-on - a real break the cutie - and whilst i don't condone what happened in the slightest, i want to make that crystal clear it was something that happened to young girls in that industry and i wanted to explore it.
Tumblr media
GEORGE GRAY
george met isla mcnamara whilst recovering from an arm injury back in florence during wwii and they grew close over this time there being a pair of few scots with george growing up in glasgow and isla, although born in aberdeen, was raised in edinburgh. the couple stayed in contact throughout the war and reunited on victory in europe, eloping a few weeks later. their daughter olivia was born in nineteen-fourty-seven and their son in nineteen-fifty. they also joined the gray's in california where george completed his english degree at berkely, going on the pen successful novel, the gray area.
the gray area recounts george and his family's experience growing up around the infamous birmingham gang through their personal anecdotes as children. the book is primarily told from george's perspective, but when not it's typically his mother's. the novel was purposely published post michael's death due to his involvement in the jimmy mccavern murder however george began writing in nineteen-fifty. the book caused a slight rift between the gray boys with jack taking up his then wife's surname as to not draw attention to himself once it hit shelves.
Tumblr media
ROSALIN "ROSIE" GRAY
michael managed to get rosalin a small job on his friend, elia kazan's latest film - gentleman's agreement as dorothy mcguire's personal assistant. since her brief modelling work had dried up, she just wanted something to get her out the house. however, mcguire had fallen ill during the production and instead of halting, kazan had rosalin run her lines opposite gregory peck. the pair grew close over the process and had begun dating by the premier. they married in nineteen-forty-nine and had their first set of children in nineteen-fifty - twins, edward and dean with another son and finally a daughter by nineteen-fifty-seven.
Tumblr media
JOHN "JACK" GRAY
jack met aspiring socialite and heiress louise valentine after moving to new york city once completing his architecture degree at ucla. she introduced him to the life he'd actively ran from in his youth. however this was now on his own terms, now surrounded by his peers the recluse younger gray son became an infamous party boy. unbeknownst to the tabloids, jack was running from a secret and drowning out its pestering screams for release in booze and new-market drugs. louise and jack's marriage was an oddly sinister mirror of his own mother's plight. they went on to have a daughter together before separating in nineteen-seventy-six after his secret's exposure within a high-profile affair.
after the loss of his partner, journalist gene vanderbilt to aids and the death of his mother less than a year prior and ten years since the death of his baby sister. jack moved back to britain once hitting breaking point. escaping prying eyes of the us press, he eventually meets taxi driver stephen nimmo. the pair settle down in manchester living a rather quiet life and marrying in twenty-fourteen with his daughter and sibling's children in attendance.
Tumblr media
VIOLET GRAY
it's nineteen-fifty, the year of the blossoming teenager - the golden age of hollywood and violet gray's grown up around every form of glitter imaginable. from the squeaky-clean to the seedy underbelly glows and now dawning her sister's 'bell of the ball' role at family gatherings. freshly seventeen, she's ready for her cake too. especially after an emboldening encounter with the glowing blonde bombshell who'd borrowed the mirror in her dresser and left a red lippy behind during rosie's birthday party.
enter her eldest brother's friend-of-a-friend from broadway with chocolate brown eyes she dreamed of melting in. nobody thought much of it. it was all rather innocent, little vi had a crush on the man that soon the whole world would too. staring up at the stage wishing hunter would need an impromptu understudy.
he called her flower. even between the subtle scoffs and snarky remarks towards her sister, the boisterous sitting-room gatherings with her brothers and consummate handshakes with her father and uncle eila. he didn't forget to call her flower after pinching a lucky strike and her cheek too because marlon brando knew.
violet, until the day she died could never forget the chalk-white complexion and sharp inhale from her mother in the spring of 'fifty-two after the tearful admission but nora was finally allowed to take the step she planned to at violet's age. they saw carrie in theatre later that day starring a family friend from england.
in an attempt to get the girl back on the "straight-and-narrow", violet was introduced to fellow aspiring actor, james dean in late september of nineteen-fifty-two and was instantly head-over-heels. the streetcar star long forgotten much to her mother and sister's delight as the boys - including michael had been none-the-wiser. forget flower, she was now a doll.
she'd never really recovered, it was an open secret. amongst her family and the court of public opinion. she'd lost too damn much, so fucking much. she couldn't even meet the eyes of her baby-boy, nor her doting husband charlie hope. one abortion, two miscarriages, the man of her dreams and the sister-like blonde bombshell, her body plastered all over that fucking bunny magazine. the days of being disney's darling girl where over. hollywood's glitter had begun to rot and decay but just like every other morning since that fateful day in nineteen-fifty-five, there was still the medicine cabinet.
it was nineteen-sixty-seven and violet would've been thirty-three that winter.
her final starring role was set to release two years later, nineteen-sixty-nine's, bonnie & clyde which would also mark the end of michael and nora's producing / casting film portfolio.
Tumblr media
i'd had this sitting around a while and i didn't really know if i wanted to post it, mainly with the girls' sections - especially violet's but i've been writing a bit and i know i've been pretty radio silent for the past wee while so, whilst it's not a fic i hope you enjoyed a little more lore on the younger gray kids.

Reliance Industries Eyes Major Expansion: Bringing Primark to India
Tumblr media
Retail giant Reliance Industries is reportedly in discussions to bring the popular British fashion retailer, Primark, to India. This move would be a monumental shift in the Indian retail landscape, offering consumers access to Primark’s well-known affordable and trendy clothing options.
Why Primark?
Primark has gained a massive following worldwide for its fast-fashion model, providing the latest styles at incredibly low prices. Its entry into India would cater to the country’s large and fashion-conscious youth population seeking on-trend clothing without breaking the bank.
Reliance’s Strategic Advantage
Reliance Industries, already a dominant player in Indian retail, possesses the extensive infrastructure and expertise to successfully launch and operate Primark stores across the country. This partnership could prove highly beneficial for both companies.
Potential Impact
Primark’s arrival in India is likely to shake up the existing fashion retail market. Domestic brands and international competitors may need to re-evaluate their pricing and style offerings to stay competitive.
Stay Tuned
While the deal is still reportedly under negotiation, the prospect of Primark entering the Indian market has generated considerable excitement among shoppers. Keep an eye on news outlets for further developments on this potential game-changer in the Indian retail industry.

Score and latest updates from Euro 2024 qualifier
Marcus Rashford finished a move started by Jude Bellingham - Getty Images/Michael Regan This embedded content is not available in your region. 09:13 PM BST 66 mins: England 2 Italy 1 Foden doing some good work in attack and defence, then Phillips is lucky to get away with a high challenge that connects with Barella’s shin. He’s on a yellow card and looks very relieved it did not go to Var. 09:10 PM BST 62 mins: England 2 Italy 1 “These are just young England players enjoying themselves” says Dion Dublin after that goal. It’s a simple statement that nicely sums up what we’ve just seen. It’s not all that long ago when you would struggle to imagine England playing with such swagger, panache and joy. Meanwhile Scamacca has another pop that is not far off for Italy, then Rashford dances in from the left, bedazzles a couple of Italians and shoots not too far wide. 09:05 PM BST GOAL! England 2 Italy 1 (Rashford, 57) Jude Bellingham starts it all in delightful fashion. The Real Madrid man loops it over his opponent nonchalantly from inside his own half and then calmly lays it off to Marcus Rashford on the left. The Manchester United man accelerates inside past a couple of Italian half-challenges and fires home low into the corner. Lovely stuff. 09:02 PM BST Kane on fire Harry Kane’s penalty conversion was his 32nd goal involvement in his last 30 appearances for England – 26 goals and six assists. Remarkable really, and he looks as strong, sharp and determined as ever. Interesting to compare his switch to Bayern Munich with Jordan Henderson’s to Saudi Arabia at not too disimiliar stages of their careers. 08:57 PM BST 48 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Kane shows superb strength to shrug off his marker in that deeper No 10 area he likes to drop into, then releases the breaking Foden in the right channel. But the City man collides with Udogie as he moves into the box and ends up in a heap on the ground. The ref waves it away and it did look like Foden made a meal of it, in real time. However, on the replay, it looks like he may have had a decent call for a penalty. 08:52 PM BST 46 mins: England 1 Italy 1 We’re back under way and there have been no changes by either side at the break. 08:49 PM BST Tribute to Hamas hostages at Wembley Photographs of children being held hostage by Hamas were projected on and around six of London’s landmarks on Monday night including Wembley Stadium, he Tate Modern, Baker Street Station and the BBC’s Broadcasting House. The smiling faces illuminating the capital included those of nine-month-old Kfir Silberman-Bibas and brother Ariel, four; Ella Zin, eight, sisters Raz and Aviv Asher, five and two, and Dafna Elyakim, 15, all of whom are hostages in Gaza. The projections were the work of a group, who describe themselves as ‘global citizens’, campaigning for the hostages’ release. “Hamas needs to know that the world cares about these children. We want to put the faces of innocent babies and children in front of the British public for everyone to join in the demand to Hamas to release them, immediately and unconditionally,” a spokesperson for the group told the Telegraph. The group were galvanised into action after becoming aware that posters of the children that had been scattered around London were being torn down by pro-Palestinian supporters. Other London locations where hostages were projected included London Bridge by the Shard and New Oxford Street. The group have carried out similar campaigns in New York, LA, Chicago, Miami and Amsterdam. A spokesperson said: “Our campaign also serves as a reminder to the pro-Palestinian demonstrators on our British streets of the sort of atrocities they are supporting. Right now their leaders are holding innocent children hostage – while they wave their flags and wear images of the black parachutes used by the ; in celebration of the attack. Those children taken hostage need the world’s support if they have any hope of being released. “We know that every decent person’s heart broke hearing about the atrocities of 7 October. To learn that more than 200 innocent babies, children, women and the elderly have been abducted and are kept captive in Gaza as human shields and bargaining chips for murderers is sickening.” 08:45 PM BST Punditry at the break The Channel 4 crew share their thoughts... Joe Cole says “quality” about eight times in his summary of the first half. Fair to say he enjoyed it. He eulogises Spalletti and says Italian football will be on the up with their new(ish) manager. Gianluca Zola agrees wholeheartedly, raving about about Udogie, the Spurs full-back who is making his full debut, and declaring himself “very happy” after the first half. Cole interjects that he is also “very happy”. Jill Scott hails the driving of Bellingham, throughout the match on the pitch and in terms of geeing up the fans, but especially when winning the penalty. 08:40 PM BST And here was Italy's goal 08:38 PM BST Half-time: England 1 Italy 1 As it stands, England are qualifying for Euro 2024 tonight. 08:37 PM BST 45 + 3 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Italy chance! Udogie finds space in the box and his low shot is saved well by Pickford, down sharply to his left. The danger is not gone as England can’t clear but Berardi air-kicks and tumbles onto his backside, and then the hosts scramble it away. 08:34 PM BST Captain to the rescue 08:32 PM BST 44 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Superb build-up play by Kane puts Rashford into a dangerous area on the left of the Italy box, he pushes the ball and glides past his defender and forces a low stop from Donnarumma. England waste the corner. 08:29 PM BST 40 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Bellingham and Scalvini require treatment in the Italy box after a clash of heads but both are up and seem OK. After that stoppage and the long Var penalty review, there should be plenty of added time. 08:28 PM BST 37 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Italy almost catch England out in similar fashion to their goal, dashing down the right with Berardi in lots of space. Di Lorenzo overlaps and tries to provide the killer ball, but this time Stones intervenes and redeems himself somewhat. 08:25 PM BST 34 mins: England 1 Italy 1 Bellingham wins possession on the right, looks up and clips a delightfully floated pass into Foden, who tries to flick it past his marker but inadvertently handballs on the rebound. The Real Madrid man is looking majestic. 08:23 PM BST Bellingham wins penalty 08:19 PM BST GOAL! England 1 Italy 1 (Kane, 32) Harry Kane holds his nerve to fire the spot-kick into the right-hand corner as Donnarumma dives the other way. It is a 60th England goal for the team’s captain. 08:16 PM BST PENALTY TO ENGLAND! England try to rally and Trippier floats in a cross from the left which Bellingham gets his head on but it’s easy for the keeper. Then Bellingham gets away from Di Lorenzo after Kane worked an opening and the Italy man brings him down. They had a long Var check and the penalty stands and Di Lorenzo gets a yellow. 08:14 PM BST Scamacca makes his point Gianluca Scamacca had a disappointing spell with West Ham last season and has since returned to Italy, where he plays for Atalanta. If he had a point to prove on his return to London, he has certainly done that. 08:12 PM BST 24 mins: England 0 Italy 1 Channel 4 pundit Dion Dublin has blamed John Stones for not getting close enough to Scamacca for the goal and he has a good point. 08:11 PM BST 22 mins: England 0 Italy 1 Scamacca fancies his chances now and has Pickford scrambling with a low shot from the edge of the box that flies not far wide. England need a reaction. 08:05 PM BST GOAL! England 0 Italy 1 (Scamacca, 15) West Ham flop Gianluca Scamacca exploits some poor marking to put Italy ahead with their first real attack. And it was a slick counter-attack. Italy broke quickly down the left through Udogie and El Shaarawy and then worked it across the field in front of England’s box, although Rice missed a chance to clear. When it was crossed from the right, there was no one close to Scamacca and he fired into the roof of the net. 08:00 PM BST 12 mins: England 0 Italy 0 Rashford curls a free-kick over the wall and not far off target as England continue their decent start. 07:59 PM BST 9 mins: England 0 Italy 0 Phillips has a bad start though, going into the book after the ref let him off for an earlier high foot but not a subsequent late lunge. On a tightrope for over 80 minutes now. 07:55 PM BST 7 mins: England 0 Italy 0 Rashford bursts into the box and after a bit of pinball involving Tripper and Kane it almost falls back to Rashford but is cleared for a corner, which Italy clear. England on top in opening exchanges. 07:50 PM BST 3 mins: England 0 Italy 0 Walker made good progress down the right and crossed into box, but no one was close enough to ball for England and Italy clear. 07:48 PM BST Minute's silence spoiled Sadly there was some shouting and jeering during the minute’s silence for the victims of last night’s ; attacks in Brussels. The message on the big screen had read: “Please stand, if you are able, to observe a moment of silence in memory of all the members of the European football family killed in recent days from UEFA member nations Israel and Sweden.” From Telegraph Sport’s Mike McGrath in the stadium: The moment of silence was cut short abruptly. After shouting from fans followed by jeering of those who disrupted the tribute. 07:43 PM BST National anthems time The teams are out and the jaunty Italian national anthem is thankfully not booed by the home fans while Azzurri manager Spalletti has a good sing-along. God save the King is belted out and now we’re almost there... 07:41 PM BST History favours Italy Italy may not have been in great form over the last couple of years, but they have a very good record in England. The Azzurri have not lost here since 1977. In 31 games against Italy, England have won nine, drawn nine and lost 13. 07:38 PM BST Seven minutes to kick-off... 07:36 PM BST England manager speaks Gareth Southgate talks to Channel 4: “Qualifying is motivation enough. Of course we have some history, but it’s about these teams now. It’s a different situation, even from Naples a few months ago. Tonight is a really good test against one of the top nations in the world.” Asked whether Henderson was dropped for Phillips after being booed against Australia last Friday: “No, it’s tactical. Kalvin did a really good job up in Scotland and is a different sort of player to Hendo, and is what we need for this game tonight.” 07:33 PM BST Henderson on the boo boys Henderson talks to Kelly Somers on Channel 4 about what happened at Wembley last Friday: At the time I didn’t really hear it but I was told about it afterwards. Of course it hurt, because every time you pull on that shirt is a proud moment, I’m playing for my team-mates, my country and the fans. But it’s part and parcel and I’ve had enough over my career to deal with it. Journalists said it was because I played in Saudi Arabia. It was decision I made a few months ago and it hasn’t changed who I was as a person. I think having someone like me, with the values I have in Saudi Arabia, is a good thing. They know what my values are and not once has there been anyone saying I cannot do anything, they just ask me to respect their values and culture, which I have. My values have not changed just because I have decided to go and play football there. I defnitely have no regets. 07:24 PM BST Buffon drops in Italy had a special guest at training this week to help gee them up for tonight’s match – legendary former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. https://x.com/IFTVofficial/status/1713882068625613270?s=20 07:23 PM BST Just over 20 mins to kick-off 07:22 PM BST Fear and respect The England player Italy most fear is Jude Bellingham, having watched his development under Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid with interest and seen what he did to Napoli in last season’s Champions League group stage. Gazzetta dello Sport said he is “the strongest in the world today” and Spalletti will surely have some kind of plan to try to blunt him tonight. 07:18 PM BST Spalletti speaks Channel 4’s James Richardson has interviewed that man Spalletti, here are some of the best bits: On Italy’s poor form and results since winning Euro 2020: “It’s clear we’ve got something wrong somewhere but you always emerge from difficulty stronger.” On the betting scandal: “Obviously the team has been shaken up, but we hope to have these players back as soon as possible because they are great players.” On England’s win in Naples earlier in this campaign: “England were amazing, Italy were good in moments, but when their attention levels dropped England created problems. We have to match England and make our mark as we did in 2021 at Wembley.” 07:13 PM BST How will Italy play? Spalletti, who led Napoli to the Serie A title last season, encourages his players to have courage on the ball and be creative, and wants his team to get on the front foot and force opponents to defend. The traditional Italian trait of ferociously competing for possession has not been dimmed and he has embraced the vogue for pressing. “From what we see across Europe today, those who control the ball more tend to win more often,” he has said. 07:09 PM BST England captain speaks Harry Kane has done a fine job of sidestepping the determined efforts of interviewer Kelly Somers on Channel 4 trying to get him to say he wanted revenge on Italy for that Euro 2020 final defeat. Our focus is just on qualifying, it doesn’t matter who we’re playing against, but of course there are some memories, especially here in this stadium. We had a good result in Italy and it would be great to beat them here but in football you move on and focus on the next challenge, and our next challenge is qualifying for Euro 2024. 07:04 PM BST Italy’s new betting scandal Italy will be without Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali and Aston Villa winger Nicolo Zaniolo after the duo left the Italian national team last Thursday following an investigation by Italian authorities into illegal betting. They could be banned for three years if found guilty. Tonali’s agent has admitted that his client is battling a “betting addiction” but says that he could still play for Newcastle United against Crystal Palace on Saturday. The duo will be heartened by the words of Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina, who said: “As a human being I feel for the two players, they are like children to me. “We should not condemn these young boys. Gambling addiction is not a football problem, it’s a social plague. I assure you that whoever is asking for help we will help.” 06:58 PM BST Italy’s travails Italy arrive at Wembley tonight a different beast to that which stunned the stadium in 2021 by beating England on penalties in the (Covid-delayed) Euro 2020 final. The wheels subsequently fell off as they missed out on qualification for last year’s World Cup in Qatar and their Euro 2024 campaign got off to a bad start with that 2-1 home defeat by England. Roberto Mancini quit as head coach in August and the new boss – former Napoli, Inter and Roma manager Luciano Spalletti – has been trying to pick up the team’s fortunes despite a heavy injury list and a betting scandal that has rocked the nation (see upcoming post). Spalletti has steadied the ship amid fears Italy could fail to qualify for Euro 2024 as well, starting his reign with a 1-1 draw away to North Macedonia then really getting things going with a 2-1 win over Ukraine, before beating Malta 4-0 last Saturday. Italy are second in Group C and level on points with Ukraine, on whom they have a game in hand, and who they play in their final qualifier – which looks decisive for both teams’ hopes. 06:50 PM BST Italy's line-up There’s a first start for Tottenham full-back Destiny Udogie, while Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo returns and veteran midfielder Giacomo Bonaventura drops to the bench. 06:41 PM BST England starting line-up Just as predicted by Telegraph Sport’s Matt Law (see  5.56pm post), Kalvin Phillips comes in for Jordan Henderson. England team (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier; Rice, Phillips; Foden, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane. That is 11 changes from the team who beat Australia 1-0 in last Friday’s friendly and Jude Bellingham could start in a more advanced role, as he does with Real Madrid. 06:40 PM BST One Euro 2024 slot up for grabs in Southgate’s team Gareth Southgate’s team for Euro 2024 is good as set – writes Telegraph Sport football reporter Mike McGrath – apart from one slot. Who will take the third midfielder slot alongsdie Jude Bellingham or Declan Rice> McGrath sees it as a fight between Kalvin Phillips, who is expected to start tonight, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Write Mike’s full article here. 06:34 PM BST Minute’s silence and extra police after Brussels attacks There will however be a minute’s silence tonight, after Uefa told the FA – and all the other national governing bodies hosting Euro 2024 qualifiers tonight, to do so in memory of the two Swedish football fans who were killed by a ; before their match – which was abandoned at half-time – against Belgium in Brussels last night. There will also be an increased police presence around Wembley tonight after last night’s attack in Belgium. Fans have been promised a “highly visible policing presence”, but were warned by Scotland Yard to “remain vigilant throughout”. Read the full story here. We have been working closely with partners inc @FA to ensure fans attending #WembleyStadium tonight can enjoy the match. Please arrive in good time before the game and remain vigilant – flag anything of concern to police or stewards. Here, Sam Wallace gives his take on the saga, saying English football will regret the big words it left unsaid… 06:22 PM BST Back to serious business Following that wobble against Ukraine, England restored some chutzpah with a feisty win over Scotland in Glasgow and a more subdued 1-0 victory over Australia last Friday with a team made up largely of players hopeful of breaking into the first XI and an atmosphere somewhat overshadowed by the saga of whether the Wembley arch would be lit up in Israeli colours following the Hamas attacks. Tonight it’s back to serious competition and a first-choice starting line-up. 06:17 PM BST England’s qualifying campaign so far Gareth Southgate’s side are unbeaten, having won four of their five Group C matches so far and drawn the other. They started with a superb 2-1 win over Italy in Naples, with Declan Rice and Harry Kane on the scoresheet, and followed that with wins over Ukraine, Malta and North Macedonia that accrued an aggregate score of 13-0. However, the wheels wobbled a bit last time out, in an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Ukraine. They’ll be looking to get back to winning ways by completing a memorable double over Italy tonight, but a draw will be enough to book their place at Euro 2024. 06:15 PM BST Henderson in the firing line It will be interesting to see the reaction Jordan Henderson gets at Wembley tonight (he is likely to start on the bench) after he was booed by fans during the friendly win over Australia there on Friday, prompting an exasperated response from Gareth Southgate. The player, who seems to have drawn this opprobrium for joining Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, seemed calm and stoical in response, promising to keep on keeping on. Read the full article

Marcus Rashford sends clear message to Ten Hag about his preferred position
Tumblr media
Marcus Rashford sends clear message to Ten Hag about his preferred position Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United forward, has openly admitted his preference for playing on the left wing instead of other positions in the attacking line. During a conversation with club legend Gary Neville on the latest episode of The Overlap, Rashford elaborated on why he favors the flank position over being in the number nine role. In the previous season, under Erik ten Hag's management, Rashford was used in various roles, and there were instances where he had to take up the central striker position for the team. The outcome of this tactical flexibility was Rashford's best goal-scoring season to date. Recently, he inked a new contract, extending his tenure at Old Trafford, and managed to score an impressive 30 goals for the Red Devils in all competitions. He told Neville, “ left-wing, although I feel like centre forward you have less distance to cover to score simple goals. Whereas when you are on the left wing, if you are late sometimes making the back post is a 20-30 yard sprint.” “If the striker pulls to the back and you’ve got to go across the front, then it’s another 15 yards. I prefer the left, I feel like on the left it’s easier to stay in the game. From even when I was younger I always wanted to stay in the game, that’s why I think I struggle playing centre-forward sometimes because I struggle with patience.” He added, “You might not touch the ball for twenty minutes and then your first touch might be an opportunity to score, you have to be mentally switched on and it’s almost like being a goalkeeper. You might not be involved in the game for god knows how long but when it’s time to make a save, they have to make it.” The 25-year-old individual explained that as he has grown older, he has developed a greater appreciation for being the lead performer in a team. When asked about the toughest opponent he has faced, Rashford mentioned Manchester City's Kyle Walker. The United academy graduate acknowledged that Walker's physicality and incredible speed make him nearly unbeatable, but the key to dealing with him is to catch him off-guard or exploit his positioning. Regarding the best player in the Premier League currently, Rashford acknowledged Erling Haaland's record-breaking season but believes Kevin de Bruyne has been the standout star for the past four or five years. Rashford revealed that his favorite captain at United was Wayne Rooney, and when asked about a legendary player he'd love to share the pitch with, he expressed his admiration for Paul Scholes. When asked about the best character he's encountered in a dressing room, Rashford pointed out Zlatan Ibrahimovic, noting that he remains true to himself no matter where he goes. Which is the best football team, and why?
Football is a global sport that attracts millions of fans around the world. But which is the best football team, and why? This is a question that has no definitive answer, as different teams have different strengths, weaknesses, styles, and achievements. However, based on some objective criteria such as recent performance, trophies won, and quality of players, we can try to rank the top 10 best football teams in the world in 2023.
Tumblr media
The best football team in the world right now is Manchester City, from England. The Citizens have dominated the Premier League for the past few seasons, winning three consecutive titles and breaking several records along the way. They also reached their first-ever Champions League final in 2021, losing to Chelsea by a narrow margin. With Pep Guardiola as their manager and stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, and Ruben Dias in their squad, Manchester City are a force to be reckoned with in any competition.
The second-best football team in the world is Bayern Munich, from Germany. The Bavarians have been the undisputed kings of Germany for almost a decade, winning nine Bundesliga titles in a row and six domestic doubles. They also won the Champions League in 2020, completing a historic treble. Under Hansi Flick and then Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern have played an attractive and effective brand of football, with Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, and Joshua Kimmich leading the way.
The third-best football team in the world is Real Madrid, from Spain. The most successful club in European history has won a record 13 Champions League titles and 34 La Liga titles. They have also produced some of the greatest players of all time, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, and Alfredo Di Stefano. Despite losing Ronaldo in 2018 and Zidane in 2021, Real Madrid has remained competitive under Carlo Ancelotti and has a talented squad that includes Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, and Sergio Ramos.
The fourth-best football team in the world is Inter Milan from Italy. The Nerazzurri ended Juventus' nine-year reign as Serie A champions in 2021, winning their first Scudetto since 2010. Under Antonio Conte and then Simone Inzaghi, Inter have played a dynamic and balanced style of football, with Romelu Lukaku, Lautaro Martinez, and Nicolo Barella forming a formidable trio. Inter have also been impressive in Europe, reaching the Europa League final in 2020 and qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages in 2021.
The fifth best football team in the world is Napoli, from Italy. The Partenopei have been one of the most entertaining and consistent teams in Serie A for the past few years, finishing second twice and third twice since 2017. They have also won two Coppa Italia titles and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 2021. Under Luciano Spalletti, Napoli has played attacking and fluid football, with Lorenzo Insigne, Dries Mertens, and Victor Osimhen scoring goals for fun.

Newcastle United: Football’s latest victim
Newcastle United. One of English football’s most beloved clubs have recently become the latest victim of football’s ongoing sportswashing problem . A story of how goals and celebrations become a cover for murders and executions.
So what actually is sportswashing?
Sport’s global popularity and reach means it is now a major political and economic asset. Enter the problem of sportswashing. Sportswashing is often described as how an individual, company or country uses sport in order to paint themselves in a positive light whilst distracting from accused wrongdoings.
Although sportswashing is a relatively new term, the problem has been prevalent in sport since the early 20th century. One of the most notable instances is the hosting of the 1936 Olympics, which legitimised the Nazi rule, ignored human rights violations and gave opportunity for Hitler to promote his Aryan race ideology. Other examples include the hosting of the 1934 World Cup by Italy and the 1978 World Cup by Argentina.
The takeover of Newcastle United

Founded in 1892, Newcastle United are long considered one of the biggest football clubs in England and have a rich history in the game. However, the 21st century has seen relegations in 2009 and 2016. In 2007, the club was purchased by Mike Ashley and over the next 14 years his relationship with supporters has soured leading to him eventually selling the club. A hugely popular football club was now in need of a new owner. It’s here that our story begins.
On the 7th of October 2021, the takeover of Newcastle United by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) was confirmed. Within a few months, PIF’s intention had been made clear, with a record breaking £90 million spend in the following January transfer window. This was followed by a £123 million spend over the following summer, which has seen Newcastle turn into top 4 contenders during the 2022/23 season. Although the consortium denies that the Saudi state is involved, the PIF is chaired by Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Clearly the Saudi state is aiming to follow in the footsteps of both Qatar and  the U.A.E who have seen great reputational success with their takeovers of PSG and Manchester City respectively.
The Premier League was criticised for its role in the takeover, claiming to receive “legally binding assurances” that PIF and the Saudi state were separate, despite Saudi Arabian experts stating this would be practically impossible to do. This allowed the consortium to pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test, which the Saudi state would likely have failed. The application of the test was branded a failure, leading to political backlash and ministers agreeing to a review of the takeover process.

So what’s the problem?
It’s clear that the purchase of Newcastle United by PIF is not due to a love of football but because of the value the Premier League football club has as a tool with which to paint Saudi Arabia in a positive light. Early indications are that this worked with a Newcastle United Supporter’s Trust survey suggesting 97% of fans supported the takeover. However, a number of Newcastle fans, such as NUFC fans against sportswashing, have been vocal about their disapproval and outrage of the takeover due to a number of humans rights violations, a report on which can be found here.
For example, a Saudi-led intervention in the Yemeni civil war led to at least 8,773 civilians being killed and 9841 wounded, as of August 2021. A majority of these casualties are thought to have come from coalition airstrikes, some of which may be considered war crimes, of schools, hospitals, mosques and homes. In addition to the airstrikes, the coalition imposed an aerial and naval blockade restricting the importation of food and other life-saving goods, leading to what many believe could be the worst famine in modern history. Another issue is the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. Khashoggi was a Saudi journalist and political activist. He was murdered on the 2nd October 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Saudi Arabia’s investigation into the murder found that the murder was committed without the crown prince’s knowledge and had not been premeditated. However, both Turkey and the UN investigations contradict this, suggesting there is reasonable evidence that the murder was premeditated, while the CIA concluded with medium to high confidence that the crown prince was involved.
This political silencing has attracted global attention, leading to condemnations from major countries and the cancelling of arms deals between Saudi Arabia and several European nations. The murder saw a major decline in the global reputation of Saudi Arabia and is likely one of the leading factors behind MBS seeking to use sport to rebrand the country’s image.
It seems incredibly unfair that the undying support for the club that the fans have is being exploited in order to distract and minimise from certain atrocities. The power that the takeover has to dominate news relegates the importance of stories of human right’s violations committed by Saudi Arabia and begins to change the perception the world has of the country. The acceptance of the takeover also implies a sense of approval of the country’s actions and paints a stain on the club’s history.
Concluding thoughts
Although the takeover has clearly seen an improvement in Newcastle’s performance, the importance of the issues surrounding Saudi Arabia must not be taken away from. We must not let Newcastle’s performance on the pitch steal the attention that should be placed on the human right’s record of the new owners. So I leave you this question, how can it be allowed that the passion and love the fans have for Newcastle United be hijacked and used to distract from conspiracies of murder and war?
