Quite a late post, however this is one of my favourite shots taken from our shoot for the Cardboard Catwalk brief we were given in college two weeks ago. We were asked to create sustainable fashion using solely paper and cardboard for materials.

The dress my group made was inspired by the SS16 Marchesa Bridal Collection.

To make this dress we used a petal shaped hole punch to punch small and larger petals for the main body of the dress. These were then hot glued on to angel hair (a paper based material that appears to look like fabric). Originally we intended to create a papier mâché corset to support the main body of the dress, however after applying the flower petals to the angel hair the main body was able to structurally support itself. The underskirt was created by using A2 sized card and applying tissue paper ruffles to it. A flower bouquet was also created using paper folding techniques, along with a veil featuring paper folded flowers and angel hair.

I am beyond happy with the outcome of this dress as the layered up flower petals creates the illusion of it being made out of lace and fabric, when in fact it’s not. I think as a group we have been able to demonstrate how sustainable materials can be used to create aesthetically appealing fashion without it immediately being obvious to the viewer that it has been made out of paper.

The shoot for this dress was inspired by one of my favourite fashion photographers, Nick Knight. I made use of the blue and cyan colour gels available in college for this particular shot and I think it works well in adding colour to the dress. We wanted a runway model look and wanted to add edge to the shoot so that it didn’t look like a photograph from a bridal magazine. Therefore we decided to hide the model’s eyebrows and apply minimalistic, yet edgy eye makeup along with a bold red lip. We slicked the models hair back using gel to further emulate this runway look we were going for.
