Mike CANONICALLY said his life started the day they found El in the woods. This is canon. He really said that. He really loved her at first sight. “but but when he was 12 he wanted to send her away.” Yeah but his love confession makes clear his TRUE feelings at the time. 12 years talk shit and say things they dont mean but you can see it in his eyes how much he has always loved her. You attack the monologue from all angles with your delusions but canon is CANON, and canon is TRUTH. Mike said he loved El 9 times, dammit. Period. And the monologue made grown men cry on YouTube and everywhere in the real world because it shows what real, mature love looks like. Y’all are just jelly he didn’t monologue to a boy. This is misogyny, plain and simple. Y’all want El to be unloved so much, it makes me seethe

you seem to want to emphasize on what's canon a lot, so...

let's talk about canon

throughout the show, here are the things we see to be 100% canon:

1. mike showed no indication of "love at first sight" when it came to el in season 1

gentle reminder that this is a tv show and not real life – yes, 12 year olds can say & do stupid shit that don't reflect how they actually feel, but since this is a tv show, the writers have to give at least SOME indication of the character's true feelings at the time to clue the audience in. they can't just not build that up and then randomly spring it on the audience later on. it doesn't work like that.

2. mike says to will, in the same episode as the monologue, that meeting el was "not fate, (it's) not destiny, it was simple dumb luck".

first of all, destiny/fate & love at first sight go hand in hand. it is destiny, by chance that you meet someone and instantly fall in love with them. mike saying that it wasn't this, and it wasn't destiny/fate just show that it WASN'T actually love at first sight for him.

3. mike made the conscious choice to ask if he could be will's friend the day they first met

this contrasts the midleven meeting which mike describes as "simple dumb luck". it's not something he had control over. whereas, with his and will's relationship, it was something he had control over.

4. mike could only say "i love you to el" after being peer-pressured by will

this is fact. this is canon. you literally can't say otherwise.

5. mike hyperfixates only on el's powers during the monologue, and does not say a single other quality about her.

even throughout the show, the only traits he compliments about her are superficial things that don't show that he knows anything fundamental about her. apart from her powers, he compliments her on her looks.

6. midleven never once has a successful heart-to-heart, while byler has had several

this is interesting because all the likely endgame couples have had heart-to-hearts before. so interesting indeed that midleven has had none.

7. the vines tighten around el's neck until she looks at max

mike's monologue wasn't even effective lmao- all he did was waste the time el could have used to save max. it was seeing max nearly die that gave el the strength she needed. NOT mike's bs monologue.

8. there were zero memories/flashbacks that played during the monologue except for when they first met

this was also a factually accurate thing mike said, and warranted a flashback (most likely to jog the audience's memories of s1). after that, however, there is nothing. they could have included some cute midleven scenes in the monologue but NOPE.

9. there were flashbacks/memories that played for el of her time with max.

funny how there were no memories or flashbacks of midleven during the monologue scene but there were tons of flashbacks for her and max.

also, there is the fact that several of the memories of elmax that played was extremely anti midleven like "not hopper, not mike...you" and "there's more to life than stupid boys". midleven is bones.

10. mike said he loved el "9 times" but not one seemed genuine

the first "i love you" in itself seemed forced, and came right after will yelled "you're the heart!" at him. it shouldn't be THIS hard for him to say ily to el if she is about to die and if the ily could potentially save her. it shouldn't take will pushing him for him to finally say it.

11. mike has been able to give a monologue before that was 10x more genuine than the milkvan monologue

season 2, will is possessed and we have mike give the iconic "do you remember the first day that we met?" monologue. he actually shows some ounce of emotion unlike the midleven monologue.

12. el is not unloved. she is loved by hopper, joyce, jonathan, will, max, lucas, dustin.

el doesn't require romantic love to feel loved and valued, quite frankly because romantic love isn't the only kind of love, and certainly isn't the only kind of love that deserves to be valued and cherished.

you guys throw the word "misogynistic" around so much that it's starting to lose meaning. what misogyny really is is wanting el to rely and depend on a man for her strength and value. misogyny is wanting el, someone who has spent majority of her life in a lab outcasted from society, to rush into a relationship with a) zero concept of what a romantic relationship actually entails and b) not knowing much of anything about HERSELF.

in order to know what she wants and requires from a relationship, she needs to know who she is and what she wants for herself first.

y'all want stranger things to be superficial so bad, it makes me seethe.

how long did it take you to watch the van scene the first time? about how many times did you rewind? did you catch the lip glance right away? did you think it was heading in a byler positive direction when mike was talking? how about when will was talking? were you happy/disappointed by the painting? how did you feel by the end of it? how devastated were you by will's crying?

Okay, so. Fun fact: I didn't ship byler till after finishing volume two. (however, I was already semi-shipping it especially after the van scene.) The thing was, I suspected it, I just didn't really see it until I got on tik tok and went back and rewatched EVERYTHING. But that's not to say I didn't always know Will was gay. Cuz I did. Since season one when he was called those names. And it only confirmed that in the "it's not my fault you don't like girls" scene. So, I knew Will was gay and then I realized progressively throughout s4 that he liked Mike.

Anyway, back to the ask;

The first time I only watched it once, stupidly. In my defense I was very sad and thought Will was just turned down.

When Will was talking is another story. I knew right away he wasn't talking about El, obviously. I actually did think maybe byler was gonna be canon right then and he was going to spill his feelings. But I still wasn't convinced about Mike.

I thought the painting was beautiful w/ the finishing touch of the heart on Mike. It was so cute. 😭

Like the duffers personally grabbed my heart out of my chest and stomped on it repeatedly then lit it on fire and stabbed it seven times.

IMMENSELY DEVASTATED. Many queer people (if not all) understand that feeling of being a mistake, or feeling like you'll never be normal. I've felt that especially with not many supports at home (growing up in a religious household) and not being able to make many friends. I wanted to reach in the screen and hug Will, cuz it was like having a mirror held up to me.

New anon here: whether Mike ends up being gay, bi or straight, imo the monologue was badly written and a very weird scene. It was ugly and did not have any emotional intensity.

I understand people who say that this was shot this way on purpose to show that Mike was lying/half lying/not in love with El but was this all really necessary? Now a good portion of the fans/ of the GA are shitting on Finn's acting. Bylers are confused. Even some Midlevens found it weird and embarrasing. Only hardcore Midlevens and incels on Reddit are pleased.

I really don't know how the Duffers are gonna deal with this in S5

Mike's monologue is the scene I have the most complicated feelings about.

On one hand, it's just kinda blah. A lot of what he's saying is cliché and doesn't feel like Mike. It didn't address a lot of things it could have (Mike having poor self-esteem, validating El's feelings about how Mike was treating her, ect.) and sticks out like a sore thumb compared to how other monologues/heart-to-hearts have gone. Mike made a lot of statements nobody expected him to, and it definitely felt like some things came out of nowhere. We weren't shown the aftermath or clued in to how El feels about what he said, meaning her reactions are entirely up to interpretation. Which is probably a big part of why it didn't land well with a lot of people, since there's no clear answer for how the audience is 'supposed' to feel about it. It feels incomplete and lacking.

On the other hand, I think it's probably supposed to come off that way. He's a scared, confused teenager with a lot of trauma and is known to have problems with being open and expressing his feelings. They hadn't properly reconciled about their fight, and was lied to about how she feels about him. He had to be slightly pressured and reminded about Will's lie in order to talk, which isn't a sign that Mike felt confident in what he was saying. It's overall just a complicated situation with a lot of different things to factor in. It does make sense why the whole thing feels slightly off, but I agree it could have been better.

I think there's so many different ways they can handle it, and even handle it well, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried.

Well... For me Mike's relationship with El and Mike's relationship with Will suffer the same problem in Mike's head: the difficulty in differentiating platonic love from romantic love.

Even as a gay Mike truther, I don't like the idea of Mike actively or consciously choosing to be with El to hide his sexuality. To me, Mike really believed that what he felt for El was romantic love, even though he was pushed into that relationship.

When I say that the same confusion happens in relation to Mike with Will, it's because I believe it's the opposite. Mike believes that his platonic love for Eleven is romantic while he believes that his love for Will is platonic when in fact it is romantic.

What is interesting about this character is that we follow Mike slowly realizing this. The fact that I think Mike is gay doesn't invalidate the cute scenes in season one and two between them. Many gay men have dated women they truly believed they were in love with.

Everyone goes through gay awakening in a different way and once you discover your sexuality, it doesn't mean you need to invalidate all your previous experience.

For me, Mike really loves El a lot. What I think is that when he started to realize that he doesn't love her the way he thought he did, he got scared and we see all his internalized homophobia taking over his attitudes in season 3.

The reason I don't think Mike is bisexual is simply that Mike doesn't show attraction to any other girls imo. And even the mileven shippers themselves know this, they even created the term "elsexual". If by any chance he turns out to be bi, I really won't mind and I'll think it's great representation, but that's not what I think is happening.

I know I'm getting into the topic of gay vs bi Mike a lot but I think this is important to this answer because the most important thing here is: do I believe that Mike ever loved Eleven romantically? I don't think so .

So, in the end, I don't believe that the fact that Mike is gay invalidates the experience he had with El. For me, he realized that this love was not romantic at the end of season 3 and that he felt something for Will. At the end of season 4, he already had it in his head what he wanted to do with it.

I think the van scene didn't stop Mike from wanting to break up with El. The point of that scene for me is Mike understanding at least a little bit that Will was talking about himself, although he was confused and about the hope that this engendered in him regarding his relationship with Will. Before his monologue to El, this hope was crashed because he thought Will was really talking about her. However, I think Mike still wants to break up with her and he finally knows he loves Will in a romantic way and El in a platonic way.

You know the mileven tree, with mike and El’s initials carved into it is valid right? It’s an officially licensed marketing image from Netflix Brazil unlike your “Byler script” which was obviously fake and unlicensed

okay but like…you do realize that it’s still NOT canon right? like…like you said, it’s literally MARKETING. that’s the netflix accounts’ jobs. that’s something i’ve really come to realize – netflix will just do and post whatever to engage the audience because that’s what THEY WANT. they WANT to keep fans hooked onto their platform so they increase/keep their sales. i would take what is posted on social media with a grain of salt, unless it comes directly from the stranger things social media accounts/the stranger writers accounts. (even though what netflix posts can be fun to see, especially for bylers because it feels good to be represented on their social media).

so like…them posting midleven tree with initials carved could have just been something cute for the midleven fans to keep them involved/engaged. this could also be true for byler (when it comes to posting byler-related content). netflix does not have direct say in what does or doesn’t happen in the show, so our best bet of anything even remotely close to canon is from the stranger things social media accounts.

also, kind of getting really sick of y’all saying the script was “obviously fake” like you do realize that 8flix was literally CREDITED by institutions like cornell? so how is it “obvious” that the scripts were fake? plus like why are y’all even bringing scriptgate up again now aren’t y’all tired

i want to preface this by saying don't send me hate, i am not a stancy shipper. jonathan ily. well, ronance ily more, but.

anyway the duffers like subverting tropes, right? that's been established. and so i think the trope of the asshole jock "losing" the love triangle, or not getting a good ending is something they are going to go against.

also nancy and jonathan had that whole fighting narrative in s3 where they were just kind of on different wavelengths about everything, then move into season four, where they don't interact all season except for like, one hug at the end and her saying she was glad he was protecting mike.

hell, jonathan and argyle were literally talking about "slow motion breaking up with nancy"

and then on the flipside we have nancy and steve talking about the future and having kids and stuff (ok steve 🙄) and nancy making goo goo gaga heart eyes all season, steve canonically still being in love with her, tender injury tending trope etc, etc, just a bunch of intimate moments.

to me its the same as how midleven has no cute moments in all of season four, but byler has a bunch of heart to hearts and tender emotional music. they clearly are pushing you towards one ship. if jancy doesn't interact all season, but stancy are staring lovingly at eachother every three seconds, i think we can see which one they want us to root for.

also steve has kind of, idk, earned it? (not that steve has earned dating nancy i mean, just from a narrative perspective, he has developed enough that we want him to have a 'good' ending, which is apparently with nance) like, his character arc went from being an asshole who was really annoying and a bit of a douche to nancy (that one scene where nance was like 'no stop i need to get to class'- a playful no, but still- and he didn't listen) to caring about the kids, being okay with just a friendship with robin, bonding with eddie (cuz s1 steve would have snap judged him and bullied the shit out of him) and basically just completing his character development.

so he is quote unquote "good enough" for nancy at this point. we want him to have a happy ending.

also (and this is kind of a weak argument, and i personally disagree with this notion, but its just adding on top of other stuff) i feel like they won't want to have byler endgame and jancy endgame because the homophobes will just have more ammo to run with (tHeY wOuLd bE rElAtEd iF jAnCy gOt mArRiEd)

anyway that whole plot of jonathan not wanting to go to college with nancy was useless imo if not to sow the seeds of discord in their relationship.
