Living in New York for such a long lifetime, I lived my passion (Dance) and chased Basquiat Theories on the side. I actually nestled myself into the East Village on the street that Basquiat lived on while dating Madonna. Low Key obsessed. I merged heart and mind with many talented people. I saw their work, their visions and WAS BLOWN AWAY. It was much more than capturing a perfect picture to tell a perfect story. They were capturing the subtitles. Every angst, every detail, every woe, every love. Art took the place of verbal English and it was always about exxxpression and The Movement. I loved shooting with Mike because he is quiet legend. To know him in real life...you would never know he has captured all of Hip Hop History in a way I am still yet to see be done. He makes everyone look real. Not just real, but he has this amazing way of capturing whatever your heart is telling your eyes to say. He shoots in real life time, natural lighting, no edit. Mind...Always....Blown. He is quiet, low key, humbled, and a very beautiful mind, spirit. When he told me how he wanted to shoot me...honestly I was mad. I was at the height of producing “liquified” images of myself, stretching and experimenting with LaChapelle color techniques and trying to merge that into urban. I had built a persona. Nobody knew me in real life...and the people who did were all living in different genres.  He caught me bare. This photo changed my whole perspective. When I first saw it...I hid it. Struggling with my own identity and comfort. Baring myself, my vulnerability. It was sooo hard. I can’t tell you. Even tho some don’t give photos enough credit sometimes, it’s the story behind things that give them depth. 

I was able to see myself. Like he fought to show me something wether I liked it or not. I cried. Things going on in my life at that time, in my mind. The fights, the struggles of Hip Hop misogyny and High Fashion trying to sweep me away. Like falling in love with the guy from the wrong side of life, Yo’ baby daddy, and your rich parents coming to take you back home. Was heart broken. Mike captured that...even tho I have never ever everrrrrr told him this. :-)

He also shot my tumblr avi on a cell phone... I never saw my eyes sparkle like that. Something about the essence of what he wants in a photo, no matter who you are. He would be Jimi Hendrix photographer, Warhol’s cinematographer, Basquiat’s Homie... all shot in rustic New York Life setting. The every man glamorized and lit only by the soul they keep.

I love you, Mike. Thank you for every single thing. I will see you soon.
