In screenwriting there’s a term for when the hero pauses mid-dialogue, and reverses his opinion or direction. A screenwriter signifies this with one simple word: (beat). Beat | Definition: In the context of a screenplay, it usually represents a pause in dialogue. In the context of the timing of a film, a beat refers to an event, decision, or discovery that alters the way the protagonist pursues his or her goal. (Source: Wikipedia…I know…don’t tell my old professors…) From the above definition, there are two fundamental elements to a (beat): 1) PAUSE: The character temporarily stops the direction they were heading. 2) REVERSAL: The character alters the direction in an opposite course. I think we need a (beat) when it comes to consumerism.

Why I won’t be buying a lottery ticket this week
This is probably a very unpopular opinion, not buying a lottery ticket this week, but I’m sure you’ve all heard by now the incredibly high Power Ball lottery amount this week because months have gone by without any winners. In case you don’t know, it’s projected to be $1.3 billion. I have no real sense of scale of how much a billion is, so here’s some fun facts:
- 1 billion hours ago, modern human beings lived in the Stone Age - 1 billion inches is more than halfway around the world - It would take 95 years to count from 1 to 1 billion
But all I see in that $1.3 billion is stress and heartache. Unless you live in certain state, you cannot remain anonymous if you win, and people in your life or new people will inevitably seek you out for money. But here’s some things to think about:
Could it really change my life for the better?
In the short-term, yes. I could pay off all my student loans, pay off my parent’s mortgage, and be free of debt in an instant. But would it change how I live my life? Inevitably yes, it would, but I don’t want to live any other way than how I’m living now. I’ve worked hard to make it to medical school, and I’ve found my passion and purpose of my life in medicine. I love the people around me, and I don’t want to question if someone befriended or loved me because of the $$ associated with my name.
Would it make me happier?
No. As I’ve already mentioned, I’m very happy in my life as it is. In a previous post about Happiness and a Sustainable Life, I talked about how having money beyond your needs doesn’t make you happier.
Could I donate it and improve other people’s lives?
Yes of course! This is an obvious good, and in a hypothetical universe where I did win the lottery, this is most likely what I would do with it. But there’s also great happiness in volunteering or donating money that you worked for.
But you could travel or buy ___ !
Traveling really doesn’t require that much money! Follow airline prices, road trip with friends, AirBnB or stay at hostels, live with locals... Traveling for me involves learning the culture, environment, language, and meeting people in a new place. I don’t need a fancy hotel or first class seats.
As an aspiring minimalist, the whole point is I don’t want to own a lot of stuff. So getting to buy more things is not what I want.
*This is just my very humble opinion. I know many people buying tickets mostly for the entertainment value of playing when the amount is so high. But I’m happier with using my $2 instead to buy a chai latte from the cafe at my hospital, and for me, that’s happiness.

Happiness and a Sustainable Life
While staying at my parents home for the last few days, I’ve been going through old textbooks to donate, and I found my old Social Psychology textbook. Using the KonMari method of sorting, I had a feeling that I had to open it first before letting it go. The chapter I randomly turned to was the following section. It was too perfect a sign for me to just let it go. Here’s a brief summary of what they say:
What makes people happy?
Part of the recipe of happiness is outside of our control - part of it is genetics or environmental circumstances. But research shows that there are things that people can control that influence their happiness.
Three of the most important factors are having satisfying relationships with other people, pursuing something you love, and helping others.
Money, Materialism and Happiness
There are some important omissions from their (social psychologists) recipe for happiness: accumulating money, buying lots of stuff, and in general using most of the world’s resources.
Research shows that the relationship between the amount of money people make and how happy they are is weak at best. People who are very poor and have trouble getting food and shelter are, not surprisingly, less happy than others. After people have the basic necessities of life, however, having more money doesn’t increase happiness much at all.
Further, there is evidence that people who are materialistic - those who place a high value on money and possessions - are less happy than people who place less value on money and possessions. One reason for this is that people who are materialistic have less satisfying social relationships. Does this mean that money itself is the problem? Not necessarily. If people used money to obtain the things that really do increase happiness, such as high quality social relationships, the meaningful pursuit of goals, and helping others - then so much the better. The point is that people who do not have much money can also achieve these things.

Losing A Loved Item
Just recently I found out that my parents’ house was broken into and burglarized. They took thousands of dollars worth of stuff, but luckily insurance covered the cost of most of it. But two major things were lost. First, the feeling of safety in a neighborhood my parents have lived in for over 30 years, and second my mother lost a very beloved watch that she’s worn every day (except that fateful day when she forgot it at home) for 20 years!
But as I searched with her today at the mall since she was looking to replace that watch with the exact same model, I started thinking about a very interesting dilemma in minimalist culture.
First there is the idea of substance over stuff. That you value experiences over items you own. So in theory, the loss of a particular item shouldn’t cause you too much grief because it may have served it’s purpose, and when it’s gone from your life you should let it go.
But if you own only what you need and really love, how can you not feel sadness when an item is lost? For example I think about a pair of earrings I own that I’ve had for 10 years. To the rest of the world they’re worth maybe $3-4, but to me, they make me happy when I wear them, and I would feel their loss if they were ever taken or lost.
At the end of the day, it really depends on you. What is it that makes you happy and gives you joy? For my mother, it’s wearing a watch she’s owned for 20 years and worn every day - and it’s being able to wear the same watch tomorrow and for the rest of her life.
