Moisés “Mo” Bondia! Official OC Info Post

Age: 55 (his age during the film)

Gender: AMAB/male (cis); he/him pronouns

Height: 5’6” (170 cm)

Physical description: Has glasses with oval frames, medium brown skin tone, and dark curly hair (3A?) with a puff on the front right side and grey streaks on the both sides; bearded. Wide-set eyes, broad nose; he’s lightly freckled on his cheeks and has dimples.

Dresses no differently than the townspeople but does wear a Sephardic style kippah (aka a yarmulke; photo is for reference) on his head. He’s on the chubby side, with round cheeks and a little double chin.

His clothing palette consists of goldish-browns and blues.

I’m still trying to tweak his clothing style...

Personality: Mostly soft-spoken but has a bit of a mischievous/joking streak; very dorky sense of humor. Patient for the most part; has a calm, deliberate way of speaking. On the guarded side–vigilant around new people, though he tries to be as open and friendly as possible. Has a poor sense of direction.

Enjoys wine (the doofy jokes really come out when drunk) and singing (but is bad at it). He is a big Jewish nerd™. His family escaped with their chumash (the Torah/Five Books of Moses), a prayer book or two, and a few other things.

His name, Bondia, means “good day” (from the Hebrew surname, Yom Tov). It’s shaped his outlook on life, despite, or because of, the trauma of his childhood–he was five when he and his parents fled the bandits (at the beginning of Encanto).

Background [cw for parental death and depression]: Moisés and his parents, Ester (mother) and Jonás (father), have been in the Encanto since its creation. His parents both passed away by the time he’s in his mid-late 20s. Because he’s really the only Jew in the Encanto, he feels like the odd one out (in that sense, he has a kinship with Bruno and, to an extent, Mirabel). The townspeople get along with him, despite his differences.

Ester’s and Jonás’ deaths occurred one after the other and hit Mo very hard, and he went through a period of depression and, just, not taking care of himself very well. He wasn’t always chubby (fairly average build in his teens and early twenties), and actually lost an unhealthy amount of weight after his parents’ deaths but eventually recovered–he’s able to sympathize with Bruno in this way. He is body confident and prefers himself chubby.

Relationship with the Madrigals and others: After the Madrigals discover Judaica among their heirlooms/possessions, Mo falls into the role of a rabbi and helps the family explore their Jewish ancestry and reclaim that part of their identity. He worries about his motivation (e.g., having more Jews around will make him less lonely, is that why he’s doing what he’s doing?) and wonders if the Madrigals, especially Bruno, are actually interested (he is/they are).

Bruno becomes Mo’s study partner. Mo helps Bruno through the conversion process, doing his best to offer support when Bruno struggles with guilt over leaving Catholicism. They are not romantically involved, though I’ve toyed with the idea of a queerplatonic relationship. (Mo is likely panromantic and maybe ace.)

He and the Padre have an odd friendship. They spar over theology and general religion a lot, getting into intense debates, yet they can be seen chatting companionably at the bar(?)/other places.

Other info: Works as the Encanto’s calligrapher. He knows Spanish and Hebrew, and maybe some Ladino (Judeo-Spanish). There are a lot of challenges to being Jewish in the Encanto, but he and eventually the Madrigals make it work.

He likes flowers and sketching landscapes.

Pokémon AU info: He has a bunch of Litwick that hang out around him (8, + 1 shiny) and provide light on Shabbat. Also trains a Bramblin that eventually evolves into a Brambleghast, a Golurk, and a Smeargle. He picks up a stray Mareep.

The Litwick are a reference to a menorah. Bramblin reminds me of the burning bush, so I gave it to Mo. Golurk seems to be based on the Golem of Prague from Jewish legend. Smeargle reflects his work as a calligrapher. And Mareep because Moses is a shepherd in the Torah.

Biography of Duan Jiuliujuan

[From WS103. There is a parallell text of sorts in JS063, the Biography of Duan Pidi. These two texts seem to at least patially derive from different sources. They use different characters for some of the names and also contradict each other on some narrative details. The Jinshu explicitly labels the Duan as part of the Eastern Xianbei, a label the Weishu appear to mostly restricts to the Tuoba]

Duan Jiuliujuan of the Tuhe originally sprung from Liaoxi. His senior grand-uncle Rilujuan because of the chaos was sold to be a family slave of Tai Kuruguan of the Yuyang Wuhuan. The various Great Men assembled and met in You province, all held spitting jars. Only Kuruguan alone had none. He therefore spit inside the mouth Rilujuan. Rilujuan followed with swallowing it, turned westward and did obeisance to Heaven, saying:

[I] wish it be expedient for the ruler and lord's wisdom, intelligence and blessed features to fully move to enter inside my stomach.

After that there was a great famine in Yuyang. Kuruguan considered Rilujuan to be particularly skilled, and made commands to him to go to Liaoxi and chase after food. He recruited and enticed the absconded and rebellious, and thereupon became very powerful and flourishing.

Rilujuan died. His younger brother Qizhen was installed in replacement. Qizhen died, his son Wumuchen was installed in replacement. He was precisely Jiuliujuan's father. He occupied and had the lands of Liaoxi, but was a subject to Jin. More than 30 000 families were controlled by him, the bowmen riders were 40 or 50 000 cavalry. In the time of Emperor Mu of Jin, the Inspector of You province, Wang Jun, used the several of Duan clan in the employment of himself, and deeply favoured them. He therefore petitioned to ennoble Wumuchen as Duke of Liaoxi, with false stamps and ribbons of the Shanyu. Jun sent Wumuchen, leading more than 10 000 cavalry to attack Shi Le below Fenglong Mountain in Changshan, and greatly routed him.

[Emperor Mu must refer to Tuoba Yilu, “Emperor Mu of Wei”. Beishi writes 穆帝. Weishu writes 晉穆帝. 晉 must have been added by mistake when WS103 was reconstructed from BS98.]

Wumuchen died, Jiuliujuan was installed. Jiuliujuan, his younger brother Pidi, his cousin Mobo, and others led more than 50 000 cavalry to besiege Shi Le at Xiangguo. Le climbed the walls and looked at them, he saw that the generals and soldiers all had cast aside their weapons, were resting an lying down, and had no thoughts of alerts and preparations. Le, because of their idleness and neglect, selected and recruited the brave and strong, pierced the walls, and suddenly set out. He straight-away swept away Bobo, and captured him alive. He set him up on a seat, drank and feasted with him, and was thoroughly friendly. They made a covenant to be father and son. They pledged an oath, and then he dispatched him.

When Mobo had managed to escape, Jiuliujuan and others thereupon administered the army and turned back. They did not then report to Jun, but returned home to Liaoxi. From this and afterwards, Mobo did not dare to turn south when urinating. People asked about his reasons. Mobo said:

My father is to the south.

His feelings for Le not harming him were like these.

Jiuliujuan died, his sons were young and immature. Pidi and Liu Kun's Heir Qun ran to mourn. Pidi covertly rolled up the armour and left, he wished to kill his junior uncles Yulin and Mobo, and grab their state. Mobo and others understood it, and dispatched the army to confront and strike [them]. Pidi and Liu Qun were seized by Mobo. Pidi fled and turned back to Ji. He feared Kun would capture him, and requested Kun that they meet and feast. Following that he apprehended and murdered him.

When Pidi had killed Liu Kun, he and Yulin and Mobo themselves attacked and struck each other, the section multitudes turned aside and departed. He wished to hold fast his multitudes to move to protect Shanggu, and block the defile of Jundu, so as to resist Mobo and others. Emperor Pingwen heard about it. He secreted formidable and finest cavalry, wanting to strike them. Pidi was fearful and afraid. He ran south to Leling. Later Shi Le dispatched Shi Hu to strike Duan Wenyang at Leling, routed him, and captured Wenyang alive. Pidi thereupon led his subordinates and various ramparts and fortifications to surrender to Shi Le.

Mobo declared himself Inspector of You province, and stationed at Liaoxi. Mobo died. The people of the state installed Rilujuan's younger brother Huliao as ruler. In the time of Emperor Lie [329 – 335], made use of Huliao [as] be Great General of Agile Cavalry, Inspector of You province, Great Shanyu and Duke of Beiping. His younger brother Yulan was General who Consoles the Army, Inspector of Ji province, and Duke of Bohai.

1st Year of Jianguo [338 AD], Shi Hu campaigned against Huliao in Liaoxi. Huliao ran to Pinggang Mountain, and thereupon threw in with Murong Huang. Huang killed him. Yulan ran to Shi Hu. He used 5 000 migrant Xianbei to pair with him, and sent him to station at Lingzhi.

Yulan died. His son Kan replaced him. Reaching the chaos of Ran Min, Kan led the multitudes to move south, and thereupon occupied the lands of Qi. Murong Jun sent his younger brother Xuangong to lead the multitudes and attack Kan at Guanggu. He apprehended Kan and sent him off to Ji. Jun poisoned his eyes and then killed him. And buried his followers, more than 3 000 people.

Biographie de Sizzla

Sizzla est né de parents rasta qui vivaient dans une communauté d’August Town. Il passe son enfance à voir l’explosion du dancehall dans les 80’s. Mais loin d’adhérer aux thèmes alors à la mode des paroles vulgaires ou de l’appel à la violence, il reste fidèle aux préceptes que lui ont enseignés ses parents. Il pratique le chant et préfère se tourner vers des sujets plus culturels.

Sizzla fit ses premières armes en tant que deejay au sein du sound-system Caveman Hi-Fi. C’est en 1995 que sa carrière va véritablement commencer après sa rencontre avec Bobby Digital. Ce dernier le fait poser sur une série de riddims qui vont permettre à l’artiste de se faire connaître. Parallèlement, il rejoint l’ordre rasta des bobo-dreads.

La deuxième rencontre qui va faire de Sizzla l’artiste numéro 1 en Jamaique est incontestablement celle qu’il fait avec Fatis Burrel. Le patron d’Xterminator va travailler en symbiose totale avec Sizzla et va produire les 2 premiers albums « Burnin Up » et « Praise Ye Jah ».

Suivra « Black Woman & Child » qui reste comme un des albums incontournables dans l’histoire du reggae & du dancehall. Nommé aux Mobo Awards en 1998, il ne s’arrête plus de sortir des titres et des albums parmi lesquels « Kalonji » ou « Royal Son of Ethiopia ».

Whee~ thank you for the ask! I'll be working my way through the questions I've received kind of methodically—gives me the chance to really think about the answers. CW: for mentions of death (of parents)

35. How is your character’s imagination? Daydreaming a lot? Worried most of the time? Living in memories?

I wouldn't say that Moisés is prone to daydreaming... but I think he tends to let his thoughts drift quite a bit on Shabbat and Yamim Tovim (holidays) , when it's quiet and he's not doing any work.

He's fairly imaginative, though not on the level of, say, Bruno or Mirabel. He's the town's calligrapher (he works in both Spanish and Hebrew), so his creative streak definitely comes out when he's designing things... I think he has a "structured" or deliberate? kind of creative mind, if that makes sense... like, less free-wheeling. He doesn't let his worry or anxiety show too much. But he has Jewish Guilt and inherited trauma... plus, he was around four years old when the Encanto was created, so he has that traumatic memory of fleeing the town with his parents and the other refugees. It manifests sometimes in the form of PTSD.

48. What were their parents like? How has that affected how they are as an adult?

Mo's mamá's name is Ester and his pá is Jonás. They lived in the same town as Alma and Pedro. I imagine there were a few other Jews in that town, but by the time the horsemen come, and definitely while they're living in the Encanto (until the Madrigals discover their own Jewish ancestry), the Bondias are the only Jews left.

In contrast to Alma and Pedro, Ester and Jonás became parents at an older age. Maybe it took them some time to conceive Moisés, who's their only child. Ester's grandfather was a rabbi, and I think it's possible that Jonás, who was also a scribe, had both Sephardi (Spanish Jewish) and Ashkenazi (Eastern European Jewish) family members. I haven't thought to much about their backstories yet, so don't hold me to any of this lol ;;; For simplicity's sake, I'll probably also model their personalities on Esther and Jonah from the Tanakh/associated midrash. Mo gets his studiousness and some of his positive traits from Ester, and a bit of his goofiness and vices from Jonás.

Mo was always pretty close with his parents and is really affected when they pass away while he's still in his 20s. And he feels distraught because he's not able to recite Kaddish for them (the mourner's prayer requires a quorum of ten Jews)... which leads him to scour rabbinic literature for solutions or a work-around. Their deaths also cause him to feel even more isolated as the sole Jew in the Encanto (until the Madrigals' discovery, of course).
