QUESTION: A watercolour of an amazing #ItalianMaiolica dish - 16th Century Urbino style, monochrome female to the center - just being catalogued. My question is : Does anyone recognise the dish? We have a clue, it was given as a gift in 1926, by W.Logan of 71 Shuter St , #Toronto ...... written on a Christmas gift card stuck to the back, and also written on the back of the work so suspect it is the artist. A #Pompeii wall painting, #perfumeMaking #cherubs! It’s a ‘Victorian’ watercolour of the original, which is my second photo- on the walls of ‘The House of the #Vettii’, in the triclinium. This house derives its name from two bronze seals found near a strongbox in the atrium. The seals bore the names of two freedmen brothers, Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva. So the original is 1st Century AD: when can we date this copy? Turns out the house was a sensation when uncovered in 1894-5.... so circa 1900 sounds spot-on! Probably a souvenir brought back by a lucky visitor, fresh from the recent excavations..... Oh, and it’s signed by an artist called #Bisogno, active in that decade.... Fantastic #French #snuffBox in burl wood, embossed with the #LegionOfHonour.... the other side is a battle scene, and hard to date: however, the Legion of Honour changes over time..... this example is not the original Napoleonic one - which features Napoleon in the center - but instead bears the image of Henry IV, the popular 16th-early 17th century King of France. This variation remained until the overthrow of the Bourbons in favour of King Louis Phillipe I in 1830. This box therefore dates 1814-30, a nicely definitive date for an object often just labelled ‘#19thCentury’ . Warm days are here... so expect 🐍... this Geelong Silver example dates to 1871, an example of local colonial silversmith #EdwardFischer at his absolute best.... it was presented to T.J. Everist, building surveyor for the City Of #Melbourne 1850-72, on occasion of his retirement. What changes he would have seen as the quite frontier township of 1850 exploded into the boom of the #Goldrush after 1851, new suburbs and big construction sites going up every week.... sounds just like Melbourne today! This will be the star piece in our 2018 Exhibition, opening November 18th in our upstairs gallery, Geelong.
