Remarks by the United Nations General Assembly President on behalf the Commemoration of the International Day of Zero Waste 2024; March 30th.
Tumblr media
Your Excellency, Sedat Önal, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Türkiye to the United Nations, Ms. Ligia Noronha, Head of UNEP New York Office, Ms. Mr. Michal Mlynár, Acting Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Let me begin by commending the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Türkiye, the United Nations Environment Programme, and UN-Habitat for co-organizing today’s event – marking the International Day of Zero Waste. We are all deeply appreciative of your ongoing efforts to promote zero-waste initiatives – contributing to advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. I think it more than appropriate to pay tribute to the distinguished First Lady of the Republic of Türkiye, Ms. Emine Erdoğan, the protagonist and initiator of the Zero Waste project in her own country. It was the astounding success of this that motivated the General Assembly to the adoption of a resolution tabled by the Republic of Türkiye – declaring 30 March as the International Day of Zero Waste.
Excellencies, The numbers and trends speak for themselves in describing the situation as nothing short of harrowing: 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste are generated annually, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted each year, up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems, and food loss and waste accounts for up to 10 per cent of all greenhouse gas emissions – significantly contributing to the climate crisis. Without urgent action, it is projected that annual municipal solid waste generation will hit 3.8 billion tons by 2050. Moreover – if we cling to the business-as-usual mentality – we will have more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
Excellencies, Today – as we commemorate this important day – we urgently need to pause and rethink the unsustainable linear development model of “take, make and dispose” we have been so actively pursuing. It is high time we replace that model with sustainable practices of production and consumption to minimize our ecological footprint – including adopting a circular approach that promotes a resource efficiency model of reduce, reuse and recycle.
To achieve this, we must shift our perspective and accelerate our efforts to develop and implement zero-waste initiatives to foster the environmentally sound management of waste; the minimization of waste; and – where feasible – the total prevention of waste. Such a societal shift should not be a burden. Rather, it should be seen as an opportunity not only to mitigate environmental harm but also to foster innovation, create green jobs, and promote social inclusion. It should also be viewed as an opportunity to invest in sustainable infrastructure, prioritize eco-friendly technologies, and empower communities to become true stewards of their own environment. Allow me to also reiterate the commitments made by the world leaders in the 2023 SDG Summit political declaration – which acknowledged the serious threats posed by plastic, air, and chemical pollution, and expressed firm support for an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. I am also deeply grateful to share this moment with a youth representative. The youth are the change-makers. Their perspectives and actions are absolutely critical in our efforts to reach zero waste – and they deserve a say on such matters that have a life-changing impact on their future.
Meeting our zero waste objectives and targets requires a comprehensive multi-stakeholders approach, at all levels – from grassroots initiatives to national policies, from corporate boardrooms to international fora. Our approach must also square the circle to encompass policy alignment, knowledge sharing, capacity-building, resource mobilization, and technology transfer. Importantly – and in the true spirit of leaving no one behind – our commitment and indeed our transition to Zero Waste must be beneficial to all, especially countries in special situations.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Let me close by reiterating that our commemoration today is rooted in a robust commitment to pursue and attain sustainability within the framework of the 2030 Agenda – through, among other things, converting to sustainable patterns of production and consumption. To this end, sustainability remains one of the core priorities of my Presidency – the full manifestation of which will be rolled out during the inaugural Sustainability Week I will be convening from 15 to 19 April. I envision that this Week of back-to-back high-level engagements will spark in-depth discussions on transport, tourism, energy, infrastructure, and debt sustainability and socio-economic equality – propelling substantial progress in these key sectors of the economy.
I further expect that Zero Waste initiatives – with their cross-cutting relevance across these sectors – will feature prominently in the discussions. Furthermore, it is my sincere hope that the harvest from this Week will both inform the deliberations of the Summit of the Future and accelerate momentum towards attaining all the SDGs. The journey towards Zero Waste does not by any means involve a simple unplanned destination – but rather, a continuous process of learning, adaptation and innovation. As the President of the General Assembly, I will play my part – and I call upon us all to harness the power of collective action and solidarity to turn the tide on waste.
I wish you all a fruitful discussion.
I thank you.
H.E Mr. Dennis Francis; United Nations General Assembly President.

MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT (MSWM)
What is Municipal Solid Waste?
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is the waste generated by all public and private activities. These activities include homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals, just to name a few. In order to help reduce our reliance on landfills and create environmental awareness, we must continue to recycle our household trash into reusable resources.
Example for Municipal Solid Waste: The largest component of Municipal Solid Waste in everyday life, such as
Plastic Bottle Wooden Furniture Clothing Food Scraps Plastic Packaging Batteries Type of Municipal Solid Waste Management:
Open Burning of Solid Waste Material Composting Process Biological Digestion Fermentation Sea Dumping Process
Municipal solid waste Types Of Solid Waste:
Household hazardous waste (HHW) is any waste you produce at home that poses a risk if improperly managed. Due to health risks such as using chemicals in your home, improper battery disposal and storage, mercury in thermostats, or other toxins, household hazardous waste can be dangerous. HHW must therefore be handled as hazardous waste and transported as such because improper disposal of this waste is always expensive. A commercial enterprise must carefully consider whether it must transport its heavy metals as hazardous waste because, if transported improperly, they are subject to HHW regulations. Industrial and commercial waste collection removes waste generated during the manufacturing process as well as waste generated at commercial sites. The Solid Waste Service collects trash and recyclables from industrial facilities, restaurants, supermarkets, and offices. Household trash removal is also offered to residential customers. Solid Waste Management also manages hazardous materials in addition to separating recyclable materials. Regulated medical waste (RMW) is material generated in the research, production, and testing of biological or healthcare items. RMW must be disposed of in a safe manner. Used electronic equipment can cover a wide variety of products and can be found in many different areas. These products contain hazardous elements and compounds that could be toxic if released into the environment. Therefore, it is important to properly handle these used items. Management of Municipal Solid Waste
In a jam-packed place like the Earth, each item that increases expectations, at last, makes heaps of strong waste. These days, this has become perhaps the most basic ecological test.
Municipal solid wastes are made up of the rubbish that we produce every day, such as packaging from products, grass clippings, bottles, furniture, clothing, and food scraps. They also include garbage from appliances, paint, newspapers, and batteries. These wastes are produced by enterprises, schools, hospitals, and residential areas.
Collection of Waste Storage – Landfills Solid Waste Disposal – Waste disposal is a practice that is growing significantly in relevance for environmental protection. When waste is disposed of biologically, this may also be called composting. If a large quantity of waste is generated in a particular area, then its solution may involve transport to some place where its final disposal can be performed by dumping it on land or water and then dumping it again by plowing the soil. On the other hand, if it is a small amount that cannot be transported, then incineration may be used as the best solution.
Treatment with the help of the following machinery: Fully Automatic Organic Waste Composter – Medical Waste Incinerator – Baling Press Machine Trommel Screens Shredder Automatic Organic Waste Composter: It is an automatic composting system that works by turning & mixing the organic wastes. It contains a heater, exhausts, humidity sensors, and a temperature controller. It takes 24 hours to compost 25 kg to 10,000 kg depending upon the variant of the machine. It contains separate windows for inputs and outputs as well as a bucket of water for humidification.
Medical Waste Incinerator : Incinerators are the best way of disposing of all kinds of medical waste around the world. It incinerates all types of medical waste without creating any air pollution in the surrounding area. When you bring waste to the incinerator, you are giving a healthy environment to your surrounding.
Baling Press Machine : There are different types of baling press machines, such as single-box hydraulic, double-action hydraulic, and triple-action hydraulic.
Single hydraulic baling presses have two types. One has a capacity of 25 tons, and the other is a 50-ton machine. Both have automatic and hydraulic systems. Both have a single and three-phase option. Double hydraulic scrap baling press machine, which is a fully automatic system with two cylinders in it. The capacity of the electric motor is 20 HP in this machine. Triple Action Baling Machine: This is one of the heavy machines with an electric motor that has a power of 25 HP and uses a 3-phase power system. It also has a capacity of 100 tons. Trommel screens : Trommel screens have many types of designs, such as concentric screens, series arrangements, or parallel arrangements, and every type has its own configuration. This machine is primarily used to separate materials such as minerals and solid waste for processing by many industries. Every industry is facing a huge challenge in the context of sustainability issues, and the mineral processing industry is no exception
Shredder: There are different types of shredders.
The organic waste shredder has a capacity of 50kg/hour & up to 5000 kg/hour and is moderately three-phase. Coconut Shredder Machine: Basically, this is only a coconut waste shredder machine with a capacity of 50 to 10,000 kg per hour and 440 volts of electric shredding. Conclusion | How can we reduce solid waste: There are many ways to reduce solid waste like:-
Use a reusable bottle or cup for beverages. Use reusable grocery bags. Recycling is the best option. Purchase products wisely and reuse them. Avoid single-use disposables. That way, you’ll help our environment become greener.

Does one need solid waste management services?
Solid waste management is important step toward reforming the environment. The waste that is collected is recycled into a useful product. It is necessary to check on the solid waste management services through this weekend to contribute to saving our environment. Waste management is the final disposal, this includes collection, transport, treatment, and disposal of waste with proper monitoring and regulation. It works properly through a regulatory framework related to waste management encompassing guidance.
During the school day, we have been learning the importance of recycling and what type of products can be recycled. Due to people, the environment has to suffer a lot, seeing all these governments have started taking the initiative to help reform the environment. Our little effort will save the environment from degrading. It is not only the work of the government even citizens have to be aware of what type of waste they are disposing. The government has separated the wet waste and dry waste dustbins so that it is easy to differentiate between the two when going for disposal.
There are eight major groups of waste management methods, such as reduction and reuse, animal feeding, recycling, composting, fermentation, incineration, and land application. Through these, it is easy to dispose of waste the time for separating waste is saved and can easily divide into various categories. These solid waste management services use many techniques starting right at home, like production and reuse, which work to produce the amount of disposable material waste.
Benefits of waste management
There are various benefits of managing ways, such as
1.    It leads to a better and fresher environment. Waste disposal contributes toward the well-being of people by helping them become disease free. For this, it is important to dispose of the waste in a proper sanitary manner. The multiple waste units are used in tier one and two cities and help establish safety measures.
2.    When waste is managed in the right manner, it not only affects the environment or eliminates disease but also reduces the intensity of harmful gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and methane generally exuded from waste in landfills.
3.    Managing waste significantly cuts down many factors that adversely affect our environment.
4.    When waste is recycled, it helps in conserving energy like wastes used can reduce deforestation and even conserve energy.
5.    The recycling industry has created a lot of employment as more and more people adopt eco-friendly practices, this creates the selling of recycled products that boost jobs for many creative people.
Therefore, recycling and composting are too best solid waste management methods. Both of these can be done in various methods and have been creating employment for many people. Composting is possible on a small scale or in areas where the base can be mixed with farming soil or used for landscaping purposes, while recycling is used on a wider scale as it works in recycling materials such as plastic, paper, and metal products.
These not only control the waste but efficiently collects process handling, this has increased the business of recycling. Best solid waste is done at a low cost and has increased the market for waste management, people have been looking for a recycled product that is effective, eco-friendly, and even at a lower cost.

Things are getting increasingly shitty in Canada for trans people and, not gonna lie, it's really stressful! Within the last month:
The Conservative Party of Canada, which is the official opposition party (AKA the party with the second most votes) and has a solid chance of forming the government in the next election, held a convention where they voted overwhelmingly in favour of creating policies to stop gender-affirming medical care for minors (link)
They also officially voted to define "woman" as "female person" and try to stop trans women from being in women's prisons, shelters, locker rooms, and washrooms
Multiple provincial governments are either enacting policies that would require parents' approval in order for trans kids to change their names or pronouns at school, or have officially said that they support forcibly outing kids (link)
A nonbinary teacher in Quebec received threats of violence for using pronoun "Mx" and other Quebec provincial parties complained about "wokeism" and said they wouldn't use the title (link)
And this doesn't include the homophobic & transphobic protests outside pride events throughout the summer or the "Save Our Children" convoy that's being planned for later this month (link), or the tons of shitty things that have happened all through this year, like tons of Ontario trans people (including me!) losing healthcare.
I'm trying to stay as optimistic as possible, knowing just how many trans people and allies there are, but sometimes! It's hard!
Anyways, if you're Canadian, please consider:
Getting involved in local, municipal politics, especially on school boards, to speak out about the need for gender-affirming policies, especially for youth
Showing up (with an organized, prepared group) to counter-protest anti-trans protesters
Keeping track of any anti- or pro-trans bills going around and contacting your MPs & MPPs to let them know what you think of them
Supporting 2SLGBTQ+ charities
Literally never ever voting conservative
And even if you're not Canadian, if you have friends who are Canadian & trans, maybe check in on them? Most Canadian trans people are pretty freaked out right now I think.
