Enjoying the outdoors, surrounded by nature's beauty, strolling through serene green spaces, and basking in the tranquility of it all.

When cities are being designed one of the primary things they ensure to make space for is city parks. From small parks the size of just a couple of blocks to large ones that cover acres of land, city planners know the importance of providing green areas for people to go.

National Take a Walk in the Park Day celebrates these small excursions and the differences they can make to our mental, physical, and emotional health.

History of National Take a Walk in the Park Day

This day was founded to help people reconnect with the wilder spaces within our civilized world. Thousands of people all over the country walk in local parks, exploring the wildlife and beauty of the natural world around them.

During these walks many opt to bring cameras so they can take pictures of the beauty they find, others opt to bring a book and enjoy the peace of the natural space. Jogging, playing games, drawing pictures from nature, all of these are things people do when they go out and enjoy time in the park.

Getting out into nature has been proven to have a number of therapeutic effects on those who take the time to do it. Their stress levels go down, their heart and mind feel refreshed, their creativity gets inspired, and they become more productive at work. All of this doesn’t even include the physical health benefits they get from walking in the park.

Celebrating this holiday is as simple as doing what it says on the tin, go take a walk in the park! Everyday people take walks as an easy way to get exercise and reconnect with nature, and that’s been proven to have a positive effect on our sense of well-being.

The high-level meeting aims to:

Raise awareness and provide a platform to promote sustainable and environmentally sound practices of preventing, minimizing and managing waste through resource efficiency and responsible production and consumption of products in a closed, circular system.

Share good practices from local and national zero-waste initiatives as catalytic tools for the promotion of sustainable consumption and production patterns, in addition to supporting the eco-design of products and enhancing the stakeholder participation in the process.

Promote multi-stakeholder partnerships to scale up the implementation of sustainable consumption, production, and circularity policies and programs. utilizing tools such as education, traditions, norms, and social values in reducing and recycling waste following sustainable consumption and production.

Advocate best practices for the recognition of the International Day of Zero Waste to the main stakeholders and raise awareness for consumer behavioral change, innovation and new technologies, sustainable urban planning, and investments in green infrastructure to prevent wasteful use of natural resources.

Today I spent about two to three hours glueing puzzle pieces. Not a puzzle as a whole, but the pieces. The latest jigsaw puzzle I finished was old. I cannot say exactly, but we're talking multiple decades, perhaps from the time my mum was young. Understandably, there was wear and tear. From the sides of some pieces, the picture had come loose from the cardboard it was pasted on, flapping this way and that like the pages of a book. Corners, often, had undergone this process, but also the parts of a piece jutting out, where it slots into its neighbour. It bothered me, so I spent time today rectifying the problem with a stick of glue. It was a laborious undertaking that arguably serves little purpose. Why fix a jigsaw this old? Will I ever make it again? Will anyone? But I felt a sense of meaning. Spending time fixing something, taking care of something, improving something. Like sending a message to the jigsaw puzzle itself. I see what you are. I see your purpose. I see you have fulfilled it many times before. I see you need some repair. I see that you deserve it.
