He peers across the lunchroom.  The popular kids.  He lingers on Moon.  As Kyler’s eyes drift his way, Eli immediately looks down, covering his scar.

“You’re gonna love Yaya’s tres leches cake”, enthused Miguel, “it’s the best around-“

“Thanks”, said Tory, standing up, “but I can’t stay any longer, I need to get home, check on my mom.”

As Tory left the Diaz’s apartment, clutching a hefty portion of cake that Carmen insisted she take, she allowed herself one last fleeting glance through the window at the happy, smiling family before slowly trudging off in the direction of her own drab apartment.
