it was supposed to be like any other night for mina.

when it came to her favorite shows, she'd make a point in the house that she was going to stay in her bedroom and watch whichever one of her favorites was on from the start time until it ended. she never actually brought it up to her family though, considering everyone had other things to do than bother her with anything. not to mention, she'd just get another lecture by her mom, saying she was going to ruin her eyes by always keeping her eyes on whatever screen was nearby her. but she always ignored her because 1. she's a teenager and 2. she ignores her mom's commands on a daily basis anyway.

like the kids in her school and her mutuals on social media, she was a fan of survival shows. the reason why is because of her interest in the idol industry in general, as she's always looking for new songs to cover and new groups to fangirl about. she also just liked the fact that this one felt like any other western singing competition, except mixed in with real idol companies that were willing to make them become a star and not a dumb british man who looked like an egg.

she was prepared in the most extra way. she brought up microwaved popcorn (that she secretly brought up to her room so that her mom wouldn't yell at her about that), a bunch of blankets, a fully charged laptop for streaming, and her phone that was opened to her stan twitter account. when the show finally starts on her stream, she watches the episode with excitement over the possible superstars she'll see. she can't wait until she is able to get a good screenshot and make it her icon until the next episode where she'll get an even better icon and so on.

so far, each of the contestants looked promising to her and she doesn't seem to recognize any of them. it's expected, really. she didn't really think she'd be able to meet a future idol anyway since she's always kept to herself. however, as the episode progresses, she does recognize one face. she goes on her twitter account to tweet "omg i think one of my brother's friends is on this season of mgas holy Shit my bro knows a future celebrity".

she continues to watch more contestants go and she makes her comments on them, saying which ones seemed god-tier talented and which ones were super attractive. but when she sees him, she drops her phone on her lap and pauses the stream quickly to make sure that her eyes were not fooling her. no... no. it can't be.

but as she clicks play to return to it, she hears his voice and it only confirms her previous thoughts, leaving her shocked as she watches kang daniel, her older brother that literally lives with her, is on her laptop screen. he's on national fucking television. she stays in that shock until she sees the popup that says "hello, daniel’s parents!" where she tries to hold back a laugh. as if both of them, let alone their mother, would watch this.

“they don’t know i’m here, actually. think you could keep it a secret? between you and me?” he asks to who she assumes to be an interviewer behind the camera, but it also somewhat feels like it could be directed to her. it wasn't like she was going to tell them anyway, considering mina's very aware of how her mom would react to it all. if he's lucky, he could be able to get out of the house with his head still above his shoulders. plus, the two of them had each other's back since she was born. she's not going to snitch on her ride-or-die bro. maybe to james, but definitely not to daniel.

as the episode goes on, she opens her phone and quickly types her thoughts in a tweet: "yo, that dude who sang the jesus song is kinda crazy for not telling his parents abt this. but u know what? he's talented . u go jesus dude"

she prays to god he doesn't find her tweets in the future. sure, she's under an alias and doesn't have any selfies on her acc. but if he knew that she called him jesus dude rather than just saying straight-up "my brother"? that would be humiliating.

"hey, can we talk?"

it's surprising to hear that come out from her own mouth. usually, she'd hear it being said by him or her parents. she was never much of a confrontational person growing up, not to mention this quote sounded... mature in a way and that didn't suit mina. but, it was the appropriate thing to say in this situation, especially after the one dinner where she was basically giving him looks full of suspicion. she doesn't know if he knew that she knew about the mgas, so she waits until the appropriate time to go up to talk to him about it... a.k.a on the drive back to school.

he tenses up and it makes her frown. "you don't have to shit your pants. you know what i'm going to talk about."

"sorry, sorry," he responds, relaxing a little. he's silent, as if waiting for her to just say it. he knows her well enough that she's not going to beat around the bush.

"no offense, but you never seemed like a person who'd stand in front of a video camera and sing to it willingly," she says off the bat. "why did you audition for this? don't you know lots of people are going to watch you on stage?"

"i wanted sungwoon to audition, but he said he wasn't going to go alone," he explains, making the situation make more sense to mina as to why the both of them were there. "i only came as support but i..." he drops the sentence to let out a sigh.

just from the explanation, it made her feel a little bit bad for him. she understood why this was stressing him out, considering he actually cared about what their mom and dad thought of him. even if she wasn't able to relate to that, she knew that their reaction to it wouldn't be as supportive as both of them wished it would be. and the fact that he's stuck in this just because he wanted to give his best friend support? that was so on-brand of him. mina wasn't angry at him to begin with. sure, she was a little hurt that he didn't say anything about it to her. but after hearing this? it's practically impossible to be angry at him now.

"look, if you're worried about me telling mom or dad about this, i won't," she says as an attempt to reassure him. "snitches get stitches. if i tell anyone, you can run over my phone or something. but i won't, so you don't have to do that and make me hate you for the rest of my life."

the exaggeration makes him laugh and it makes mina internally sigh in relief to know that it worked. "oh god, i can't imagine taking you-know-who's title. that'd be awful."

"hell yeah it would," she says with a big smile. "don't even compare yourself to him, though. that's self-deprecation. you're obviously a little bit better."

as the car pulls up to their house, mina quickly unbuckles her seatbelt, assuming daniel had somewhere else to be since he wasn't parked at his usual spot. before she could open the door, he says something. "mina?"

she turns back to face him. "what?"

"thanks," he says. even if it's simple, she knows there's something more within it. and though she was a queen for the dramatics, she wasn't going to make it a big deal. she never did when it came to showing affection anyway.

she gives him a playful, light punch to his arm. "you're dumb," she says. "you know i got you. kang gang through everythang." as soon as that comes out of her mouth, there's a look of disgust on her face. "that sounds disgusting. forget i ever said that."

she ignores the amused reaction and leaves the car. when she walks to the door, she looks behind to see his car disappeared. she smiles when the feeling of refreshment comes down on her. it was always felt good to talk to daniel, especially when it came to family stuff. even if they were more different than they were before, it felt good to know that she wasn't alone in this. she can't say that she was lucky to be an only child because she definitely wouldn't be able to handle her mom on her own. she can't say that she's lucky for not being an only child either since their oldest brother was also not making her life easier when he was still living with them.

maybe she's just lucky that she has daniel as an older brother, too. in school, she's always surrounded by kids who constantly complained about their older brothers and sisters and while she can add to that discussion when talking about james, she never really had anything bad to say about daniel. the only time she does say bad things about him is to him personally, and most of the time it was just light-hearted teasing.

without him, she didn't know where she'd be.

home did feel a little bit different now that daniel wasn't around anymore.

it didn't really click on the night that it happened. to mina, it felt like he was on timeout and wasn't allowed to go back home until she calmed down her temper, even though she didn't show any big sign of anger to him during the discussion. even though he told her about it, she didn't remember showing any sadness. she only smiled and gave a thumbs up while saying "you're finally escaping the evil witch's lair! congratulations!" he gives a sad smile, but the conversation goes on as normally until it ends with a hug and an "i won't miss you too much."

but on the night after that, when she took notice of the empty chair, it finally did hit. it was for his own good, she told herself. if he stayed any longer, he'd probably feel trapped forever. you wouldn't want that for him, would you?

the table was quiet that night, save for their dad trying to get some small talk. mina went up to her room and cried about it before she went on the internet as an attempt to cheer herself up.

she did get used to it. by the time the fifth season of the mgas was on, she was used to the fact that he was off on his own like a dove or something. it's not like the both of them totally lost contact, anyway. even if things were a little different, he still drops her off to places when she needs a ride and she'd see him at their grandma's church once a month. even if she was on her own now with the "ultimate boss", it was still kang gang through everythang. she's said that twice in her life and she felt like a bigger clown for it the second time.

had it not been for their text conversation about the auditions (with a bunch of eye emojis coming from mina), she would not have known that he would end up in the fifth season. she was able to convince her dad to watch the show with her, no mom insight, and they watched the show together in the living room with the blankets and popcorn and mina going on her phone before her dad tells her to focus on the show if she was going to watch it. she knew she was going to see his band, but she didn't expect to see songhee and yeji and jeongin on the show. when her dad points her cousins out, asking if she knew about this, she only shook her head, letting him know that she was surprised as he was.

the next few episodes go by and mina goes through an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. she blames it on her being so sympathetic to her brother that after seeing minhyun and sungwoon get kicked off the show, she throws a silent tantrum rather than a loud one with a warning from dad. seeing the friendships her brother in the show as well as his interactions with the people he already knew makes her feel a sense of pride in her brother. she remembers her group chat being spammed with asking mina if she could ask him to get an autograph from convex (she sent a reaction image of a buff cat instead before saying "no").

though the finale was bittersweet, especially since she believed that her brother deserved a chance with his friends and yeji, she mainly felt pride in him for at least making it that far and for being less awkward than last time. she doesn't text him right after it aired since she thought it would be awkward to say all the encouraging bs after he technically lost. but, she doesn't keep that thought in her forever.

"he looks happier this time," she mentions to her dad. "like.. he didn't win, but he got further than last time and he's definitely better."

he nods in agreement. "i wasn't sure how he'd be doing after he got kicked out, but after seeing this, i think he'll be fine." he looks over to her. "you should get on this show, too. you like dancing, right? maybe you'll get as far as he does."

mina laughs at the idea, but it wasn't in a way to show that he was ridiculous for thinking that. "we'll see."

Small Nov Wins

1 - cant bring myself to study, got out of bed 10:30-ish am. While lazing around i read royal servant and do random internet stuff and watched romee's vlogs. Ate breakfast and i somehow has no appetite?? This is rare. e, cicil kompre began at 15:30 pm (i know, i waste my time a lot). Pengumuman wahana mpi wow yay kalideres makara and budi asih

2 - the weather was pleasantly cloudy. poli anestesi anak, simul. went to what used to be calais, its called flavola now. at this point i quite need some calories because i only ate bubur ayam and its like 2-3 pm ish. Eventually the hunger is gone, arrived home at about 4-ish, drank protein to curb my hunger (nanggung dinner). dad said sumn that annoyed me so after maghrib i just lazed in bed, not feeling like doing anything (even though there’s lots of exams and hw lmao), fell asleep

3 - woke up at 2 am, prated, randomly searched for angel - chancellor and taeyeon’s lyrics and i basically wept at 4 am. i assumed the song was just like,,, a guy talking to a girl, his angel, you know. EXCEPT,,,,,,,,. the 2 MVs was also rly222 beautiful 🥺. Poli geriatri today, didnt even see patient because there was no more at that time (status salin nadia). ate ichiban salad (surprisingly quite good) at dm bcs i rly do be functioning better outdoors, made matcha latte with full cream milk ((powder)), cicil PT

4 - can finally wake up late. finished 1 sitasi pt, made ikk ppt, bujing lina called about diarrhea and nausea meds, laddered the leader for tomorrow’s exam and it,, was,,, me,, group call with shiko. frantically studied for EA

5 - PT (finished in 45 mins), simul as a leader, with STEMI, VF and hypoglycemia case. somehow made it through. i suck at dosages omggg. PP by car with mom (not rly that tired) but i SLEPT after i got home and had no mood to study helpppp

6 - did my first swab test today. i pushed the doctors hand when she’s doing oropharyngeal swab im sorryyyy 😂. slept. matcha. cicil kompre

7 - still havent finished ikk (deadline: today), and still havent studied for geri and ikk AND i still managed to take a nap. why. Read a bit of kompre. Not sleepy after matcha, but insted i reread bj alex and tsubaki chou lonely planet until 2 am the next day #rippriorities

8 - im having matcha latte seven days in a row as of today :))))) woke up at 10:30 am, went to flavola with atikah and got strawberry yakult (tasted like es mony), arrived home at abt 7-ish am and there no dinner, so i drank protein and ate japota honey butter. My breakfast was chicken porridge, so my diet is sooo liquid today. Rip proper nutrition (ate buryam, lumpia, japota for the whole day and drank 3 beverage). Cicil kompre and studied geri

9 - suma geri, slept, cicil kompre, ny head kind of hurts

10 - my head still hurts, suma ikk with dr herqu and dr retno, didnt take swab result by car because the TRAFFIC in soetta so my brother took it. Thankfully negative.

11 - lulus kompre alhamdulillah, the examiner were Prof Saptawati and dr. Dani from THT. Dr dani still remembered me :"") they were very kind. Went to tamel for first wahana: klinik makara UI. Picked up masker first at mahmudas place, and then went to depok. On the way i was interviewed by maba 2020 wtf im so old. Cleaned up my room with the fam, printed sumn in barel (its quite empty there)

12 - first day at klinik makara ui. i WALKED. such wow. fixed my shoes in kutek. had breakfast in barel and bahari for lunch-dinner. somehow i felt very drained. bought Dapur Alya (nutella and regal) and 2 salads from Salad Point since there was 11.11 promo. Put all of them in the fridge. Read Fools and its sooo good omg

13 - had salad and left over bahari rice for brekkie. went to clinic by grabbike :)))), had my first teleconsultation experience today, a chemical trauma case. suma ea with the help of shiko

14 - woke up at 5:20 ish and i jogged a bit at ui lmaoo. fisip - ft - fisip. By 6:30 im already back at my room. 1 hour can be spent a lot of different ways, it turns out. Washed my clothes. Ate monstercheese pizza. Slept a bit. Went to blok m with ara (she was late as always, surprised her with koi milk tea), ate futago ya (greasy cheesy milky goodness, enak tapi eneg afterwards), bought red bean bread at la mouette, bought discounted onigiri bento box at papaya. We went to m bloc space, looked around, ate gelato at kebunide (blueberry: yum, fresh, kiiinda feels artificial, salted caramel: delicious but makes me thirsty) and did photobox at connectoon. Walked to mrt asean but turns out!! for weekends mrt is closed at 8pm. Took grabbike to sudirman, seeing the pretty city and people just hanging out, playing skateboards on the wide sidewalks.

15 - planned to go jogging with salemba frens but i woke up late (06:45), so i just lazed around. Ate onigiri bento (super worth it for 25k for the proteins), fell asleep again 10ish to 14:30 lmaoo. The doms from yesterday was present even on the right side of my lower back 🙂 the red bean bread made me feel full, and the red bean was not too sweet, which i love. Reviewed some meshwork materials i missed. Fianti called and we talked abt her and hari

16 - had mujigae for sahur and fish bite for iftar. The fish was not as soft as fish streat, but the flour was definitely better and crunchy. But it doesnt have the seasoning micin like fish streat do. The pasta was quite a lot im in food coma afterwards. Fell asleep, and my stomach was so gassy that i woke up in the middle with a headache that does not play around. Fortunately it dissapeared in the morning

17 - breakfast is rice kimchi and abon lmaoo just pretend it makes sense. The scrubs i ordered finally arrived. I fell asleep AGAIN, WHYYYY. Lost my streak in DL, i guess i can stop using it for now.

18 - finished reading blood link, girlll i thought the human died at the end. Did not buy food today wow. Took a nap and cicil kompre.

19 - brekkie at barel. Helped measuring antropometry today at clinic, and also measured my own. The fucked up thing was that i THOUGHT my body fat is still at 28% compared to the past (dr rina's research). So i looked at the old paper AND. I USED TO HAVE. 35% FAT 🙂 even my memories are in denial and are fooling me. All this time i thought i was at 28 🙂 did swab at rsui. The one swabbing was from fkui 2012 and we had small talk. It hurted more than lmk :( now this does feel like drowning in water (cause before i said "nah its not like water in nose"). Took angkot back to tamel, bought piscok lumer pocin and its soooo gooood ugh

20 - i feel like if i have breakfast with leftover rice and abon and sozzis i get hungry faster lmaoo. Ordered ken karaage from kukusan, yaa okela for 25k with ongkir. Did online posbindu education through wa. BTS BE COMEBACK 🥺 i maximized my wifi time (no wifi at tamel) so i listened to the whole album. My mobile data is at 200MB lol. Read a good longreads from the atlantic, about down synd and genetic screening. The writing is so so good im just blown away. And teary eyed.

21 - ran a bit, solid class (gastro, rheum, infection), embryo, webinar about sleep by dr Gita Anindyajati, SpKJ, bought ayam geprek gold chick (lotsss of oil since i ordered tempe, jamur, egg, bought pop cookies. matcha cheese was actually better than i expected (the combination somehow fits), dark chocolate and marshmallow is very chocolatey like mom’s brownies, and vegan strawberry cookie with a hint of mint. i wonder how they replace the egg. I wonder why after i run i dont feel hungry for a moment. bloating just gooes away

22 - joined kris' healthy weekly event (lmao) in tamsur. They went to epiwalk first. Its difficult for me to run w mask, ngl. Went back to tamel, embryo, ate leftover meal from gold and chick, felt somehow drained to the bone so i just laid in bed and lazed and lazed. Theres no soreness, but the weakness was generalized lmao. Ordered bbq chicken almond salad from salad point, it was actually quite fulfilling and delishhh (added chili sauce to the dressing). Literally laid in bed from 7 until i fell asleep and woke up at 6 the next day. Finished readin shame application lmao

23 - i still feel tired ckckck. No doms, but i feel like i just want to lay down. got DV patient today at clinic, its most likely derm numularis??? Ate salad and dark choco marshmallow cookies in the evening and that cookie. Is so damn sweet im just thinking about the increase in my blood sugar. And i like sweets so!!! Never thought id find sumn too sweet. Washed my clothes and cicil ukmppd (i put things about studying ukmppd in habitica now)

24 - ate tanoshi sushi and ufo ramen for bfast, ate the sushi again for lunch and after waking up from my sleep i tried kokku ramen (so so, but the egg yolk's good)

25 - bfast: superbubur, protein shake and cookies. (did not make me feel full long enough). Ordered burger from EATG (so so, burger bener is better) for lunch. Last day at makara ui. Ara arrived coz shes staying here in tamel. Waiting for mom to arrive from cibubur, she arrived at about 20:30. I passed out at home

26 - first day in pkm kalideres, i volunteered to be pj to avoid RSUD. my room is a mess, i feel tired after i go back. maybe its the physical withdrawal (?) because i dont walk like when im on klinik makara. came to pkm thinking i wont do anything (orientation only) but the 6 of us ended up going. i was at igd. i saw nail extraction and injected ats for another patient

27 - talked for almost an hour with the doctor at poli lansia. went home, felt sooo tired, i slept and actually showered after maghrib. originally planned to go to sbux but i was just tired af. my mood was horrible at home.

28 - turns out i started my period today. i havent studied at all during pkm kalideres era. embryo. slept again. read some manga by nishin something with the psychological and BL genre.

29 - embryo. cut my hair, showered, and felt better. fell asleep on dr gita's lecture. Drank cimory banana milk with a bit of matcha powder. I dont know if its the sleep, or a bit of caffeine, but my mood feels better and im more awake. Cicil ukmppd with a slow pace. Read itasaku ff. Slept at about 2 am

30 - surprisingly, i dont feel sleepy when i wake up. poli anak today, surprisingly i got perinatology case (jaundice). presented it on pleno. for bfast i ate 3 slice of bread (2 with meat and cheese, 1 choco and cheese) and protein shake, lunch: a slice of choco cheese bread and a banana, fell asleep, dinner: 1 bakwan, a banana and nextar. i can feel that the calories i got today is even less than what i usually got (and usually i already try to limit calories that i am counting the intake amout and made sure im not too far from my bmr lmaoo (~1100)

January 31 2019

I’m sitting here waiting to go into MBH. I’ve been at school since 8am & I’ll be here till 5 :) I’ve actually had a really good & productive day so far despite the fact that I have a MAJOR headache. We did our first lab today. It was just measuring stuff, density of water, conversion factors & boring stuff like that but it reminded me that I really do like doing lab stuff. It’s fun to actually be DOING something. Gotta remember that the next time I’m waking up at 645 to be here before 8am. Bio lecture today was suuuper fun. I like the people in my class and it’s fun bc were all friendly and shit. Everytime something happens I remember I always have more fun when I talk/engage & I end up learning more. I studied and did some of my lab work in between classes and now here I am.

I should be getting my car back tonight or tomorrow mom just told me so that’s good. I drove dads car to school today without music kind of refreshing also kind of boring without music so.

No gym for me today, I’m going straight home after classes and honestly I’m not mad abt it. I feel like I’m always doing something and my headache is murdering me right now so maybe it’s for the better.

I finished all my classes at 4:45 now it’s 5:30 and I STILL. HERE. Bc I locked dads keys in his car so yay ! I still have a headache and I want to go home. I’m dead.

Mom picked me up, brought me a spare key, I took a nap, went to pick up my car & I’m in bed now. I feel slightly better, I THINK the fact I felt like such shit was bc my eating schedule was off and I didn’t have a lunch until 5 and my head was going a million miles a minute all day due to being in classes. I ate a LOT when I came home, 2 pieces of toast w hummus and sesame, Brussels & bacon, pasta salad and I feel okay. Not fabulous but my headaches slight gone and I don’t feel dead anymore.

I got through today !! These past 2 days have been emotionally draining & I can’t wait to just relax tomorrow without having to worry about anything, go to the gym, work off everything that’s happened this week and just go to bed early.

Apparently there was a piece of metal in my tire and it was going to pop soon anyways. Maybe that was my blessing in disguise?? I do always believe they’re there and if the tire had popped while I was on the road something worse might have happened. There is always a reason for everything and I’ll forever hold on to that. My life might have been saved yesterday. The bad always comes back around for the overall good and I 100% truly do believe that.

I'm in the state of IL and I just moved here so I don't know their laws too well. I got pulled over a few days ago which really pissed me off because I make sure to do absolutely nothing wrong so I don't have to deal with cops. Well I got pulled over because my front license plate was in my front window instead of screwed to the front of my car (it won't fit there on my vehicle and where I come from you don't even need a front one). Pretty much the cop just wanted to waste time because he was bored....this is why i really dislike cops because I did nothing wrong and someone ran a stop sign right in front of me! lol Well anyway I had no insurance on the car unfortunately. I don't need a lecture because I know I have to have insurance. So he kept my drivers license and set up a court date for me. I'm getting car insurance this Friday. I've heard 2 different things. One is that as long as I get insurance before my court date nothing at all will probably happen. Another person and the cop said that I had to prove I had insurance the day I got pulled over or I could be fined or whatever. Does anyone know what penalties I face if I have insurance when I show up to court? Can my license be taken away? The car isn't even in my name if that matters.

I got pulled over for speeding. i have no insurance but i have my motorcycle permit and my driving license. when he pulled me over he asked for my license and of course, i didnt have it. it was in my jacket and i didnt wear it. i had my permit for my bike though. gave him that and my registration. he asked for my insurance, and i knew i didnt have it. but i looked through my backpack and under the rear seat. so when he gave me the ticket he said that the no insurance and license was just a fix it ticket and to take it into the court and show them and they will sign it of and the other is speeding. when i looked at the ticket when i got home, in the part where they rite down if it can be corrected or not the license says yes and the insurance says no. my question is, if i buy insurance now and go in and show them that with the license will they sign it off. or what will they do if i dont have insurance? also the reason i dont have insurance is i dont have the funds to buy it. i just want an answer to my question please not a lecture. thank you

Home insurance wants to raise dwelling coverege?

I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

Tw: Domestic abuse. Please take time to read this

I don't have many followers, but if anyone finds this, please share. I'm a Nigerian Teenager. I want to keep myself anonymous for several reasons. When I first joined Tumblr, I was overwhelmed by all the posts abt feminism, women's rights, condemning rape and domestic abuse. In about three weeks, I agreed we should all be feminists. My father is an abusive husband. Not just to my mom. But even to his kids. They've been married for 19 years, and I can tell u, my mom has gone through hell and back. It even got worse when his parents both died, because they'd always take her side. Yesterday evening my mom went out. Now we're Christians and since its the beginning of they year, most of us engage in a 21-day fast, to pray and prepare for the new year. Then at the end of every day, we go to church to pray, worship, praise God and then we eat, most times together. My mom has always been a devout Christian to a fault. And that's her biggest problem. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Christian myself, but you see, whenever my mom objects to a decision my dad makes, he would shut her up by saying that the Bible commands her to submit to him. When I became a feminist, I kept on warning her that this mentality was going to kill her one day. She just smiles and says its her duty as a wife. My dad doesn't lift a finger at home. And I fucking mean it, we cook for him, serve him, prepare bath water for him, do his laundry etc. He's the 'man of the house' so to speak. When I entered university, and my mom didn't have anyone to help her at home, it was even more stressful. She had to clean that big house all on her own, cook, take care of my younger sibling. My dad calls me almost everyday in school to report my mom's 'bad behavior' (meaning she didn't prepare his food in time). He also warns me not to be a 'bad wife' like her because I wouldn't last a week in my husband's house. Now let ke tell u, my mother is one of the most patient, enduring women I know. My dad's sisters (one of them has refused to see him till today) even ask my mom how she copes with such a monster. The day my sister got reported falsely in school, (and I say falsely because the teacher later admitted to wrong judgment) my dad almost kicked her out of the house. She was 15 then, last year. He treated her like an outcast at home and it was so heartbreaking to watch a grown man do this to his child. My sister will never forgive him for that. Even when he beat her with a belt. We don't talk abt it anymore but I know she will never forget it. My father is a dictator, meaning that when he makes a decision in the House, no other person's opinion matter. I couldn't live with this one. I'd always ask my mom if she didn't talk with him. She'd shrug and say that's his final decision. I'd be mad and tell her to speak up for herself but I think the mentality of a submissive wife has been ingrained to her head. My mom isn't a housewife just so u know. She works at the state government as a high-ranking official. We're not poor. I live in a big house. My father has three expensive cars, and a hotel he's been running for years. He's an influential man, a politician. I found out last year, he controls my mom's salary, meaning the money my mom works for, he decided how she spends it. Maybe I should have noticed this sooner, but my mom was such a good pretender, smiling to our faces. But now I realize that I was very stupid. Of course he's been abusive all this while. Do you know what's more painful? He's the leader of the Christian men's fellowship in church, very 'friendly' and full of smiles. Every other day of the week, he'd be shouting, insulting, and probably hitting my mom, then on Sunday he puts a smile on his face, holds my mom's hand and pretends like they're the perfect Christian couple. Its terrible I hate it I hate it. My brother keeps in saying that he will never be like my father. I pray so too. Back to the reason why I'm actually posting this. My Dad declared that everyone including my mom should be home by 7pm, no matter where they are. Everyone tries their best to obey this rule and is always back by 7. But you see. We're humans, and no matter what, there'll always be that one mishap that will stop u from reaching home after the curfew. My mom couldn't leave church by 6:30 and start coming because the parking space was full and many cars were blocking her from driving out. She had no option but to wait till the service was over. Its not like, the rest of us weren't worried back at home. We were. Because she doesn't stay that late. But my dad called me and started ranting abt how disobedient my mom was and how she's a terrible wife and I shouldn't be like her. I listened quietly like I normally do, not saying anything, my father frightens me so I don't object his opinions out loud. When my mom finally came back, I heard her car engine as she parked in the compound but I was taking my bath. I sent abt 30 mins in my room, before I came back, ready to greet my mom and ask her what kept her out late. She was nowhere to be seen. Then my aunt(who lives with us) told me that my dad had locked my mom outside. I was horrified. It was 9:45. Remember this is Africa, mosquitoes were everywhere, and it was a cold night. And also remember we were fasting my mom hadn't eaten all day. My mom was locked outside her home by her husband for staying in church. I and my aunty begged my daddy for more than two hours, he ignored us and went to sleep. It was by 12:45, he told us to bring her in. My aunty and I rushed outside to get her. I walked slowly outside. It was too painful to watch. Here was my 50 year old mother, sobbing outside her home by 12:45 midnight. I couldn't bear it. She came inside and we started to make food for her. When my aunt left the kitchen to get her phone, my mom told my dad had beaten her outside before locking her out for 'disobeying' him, she said it with a smile on her face, like it was the most random thing ever. She even tried to take the soup bowl from me, that she could do it herself. I was angry. How could she just come in and behave like everything was okay? She had been doing this throughout her marriage behaving like this was how marriages go. She didn't sleep with my dad yesterday night. She slept in the living room. I remember before she told me to go to bed last night, she said, with a smile on her face and a shrug, "Well, let me go upstairs and face the rest of my punishment". I was horrified. Later that night, my dad called me to tell me that my mom wasn't going to sleep in our house again. He was kicking her out till her dad and siblings come, then they'll talk about how my mother can live here again. What he really wanted was an apology and for people to scold my mom for being disobedient, since most of them take her side. While he was telling me this, I should have said something, begged, pleaded, but I couldn't. My father terrifies me. Sometimes I get mini-panic attack when he calls me at home. Maybe I'm a coward for not speaking up yesterday, but it would have been worse on my mom because he would blame her for my 'bad' behavior. This morning, he expects to have his food prepared for him to go to work. I couldn't. My aunty made breakfast for him. I can never respect that man again. Now as I type this, my mom can't go to work. My dad locked their room and took the keys. She hasn't taken her bath and has no clothes to wear. I heard her laughing to herself like an insane person. Most of my dad's abuse over the years has been mentally and emotionally, and m afraid my mom is on the verge of losing it I told my sister this morning what happened and she laughed painfully and asked me why I was surprised. I will quote her: "After what daddy did to me, do you think I will be surprised about anything you tell me? Or have u been blind all these years?" I felt so silly because I have been blind. My mom turned 50 on Monday and my dad threw a 'party' for her. He invited more than 20 of his friends and only 1 of my mother's friend. Yes, one. My mom did most of the serving and work that day, she was only invited to cut the cake, my dad and his friends spent the day drinking and eating. And it was supposed to be HER birthday party. I dont know what to do. I want to leave this house buy I can't because we all depend on my dad for income. I'm a good writer but I haven't been able to to find a way to earn money with writing and still be in school. I want my mom to leave that place with my siblings. I'm tired. My father is a monster. What's worse is that. He doesn't drink. No, he doesn't. He does all thus things with a conscious mind. I could go on and on and on. How he ruined Christmas for my siblings and I, he cares about his friends, status and reputation than his family, how he brings friends over without telling us then starts barking at us to serve food. If my dad wants something, you have to stop whatever it is ur doing to attend to him. I've burnt food, paused in the middle of a meal, skipped class, abandoned my chores to attend to him. He also banned us from receiving male visitors no matter the reason. My brother is a terrible singer but he forced him to join the church choir because it looks good for his image. He almost stopped me from living in school because I came home late. (We had lectures by 5-6:30. And its an almost two hour journey from school to my home. My father wanted me to go through that stress everyday because he realized he could not monitor and control me from school. I'm ashamed of myself too. For not realizing he's been beating mummy for years. I don't want my brothers to be like him. My brother keeps on saying he'll be nothing like him, but I worry sometimes because he's the only father figure he's known. I remember when a man from our church was tutoring my sister and one day he advised her to be a good woman so she could marry a man like my father. She was horrified but kept silent. She told me that evening. Thats shows how much my dad has the whole world fooled. I wish I had the money to leave this place. I can't bear to see my mom live the rest of her life with this monster. Because I'll definitely leave one day, as with the rest of my siblings, but she's stuck with him till she dies because people preach that "marriage is a lifetime commitment".
