Have lunch at an outdoor artisan market and saunter through the Key West Garden Club’s lush park. All the plants are labeled and the scent of sweet almond bush in the tropical air might be the best fucking thing you have ever smelled. Anywhere. Ever. You will see the hour-long line of Instagram tourists before you get to the giant buoy marking the southernmost point. Bike past them to a nail salon that serves a free cocktail with every pedicure. You’ll have to wait outside on the porch under a banner that reads “GET NAILED IN KEY WEST” until it’s your turn to have your hobbit feet groomed, but at least this year you have all your toe nails because you haven’t been running that much. Things aren’t so bad.

Key West is Boomer Paradise. It’s incongruously white and English speaking, at least for South Florida. It’s expensive. The food isn’t that good. I quickly learned that Jimmy Buffett and The Eagles dominate the Conch Republic playlist. I surrendered to the relentless imperative to chill: Take it easy, take it easy, don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy. When I returned to Buffalo, I insisted on buying Eagles songs on the jukebox at the Essex. I should feel sorry for the cool kids who didn’t ask to hear The Eagles, again and again, in 2019, but the joy I felt in August when the Amtrak I took from Albuquerque to Los Angeles stopped in Winslow, Arizona, erased any sense of remorse I ever felt for their aural displeasure. Take it easy, motherfuckers.
