Komaegi

Somewhere between 1 = NOTP, Disgusting and 2 = Don’t see it, Don’t care about it, Don’t know it.

I was at first just at a two, where it really wasn’t something I considered nor felt anything for. Then I made the mistake (?) of reading two stories that kind of have Komaegi in it and was very much turned off XD One of them was The Lion’s Den by Arcawolf. It’s an extremely interesting story (and also a massive, novel-length fanfic lol), one that at times I could barely stomach given how horrible Naegi’s situation wa. Komaegi was somewhat present but I certainly didn’t like it. THen there was an AU where Naegi is the Ultimate Hope and is pretty much a mastermind like Junko. I want to say this series of oneshots was called the Transversal. And considering how abusive Naegi is in this universal, as well as how horribly he treated my dear and sweet Hinata-kun, who was this close to becoming an Ultimate all on his own, I was very much Not A Fan of Komaegi. I am aware that not all Komaegi is going to be like this. I am aware that there are cute stuff too. But underneath both of these fanfics is the reality that... Komaegi is an unbalanced ship where both are and aren’t in power over the other. I’m not comfortable knowing that 1) Komaeda will see Naegi is greater than himself, and 2) Naegi can and will get manipulated by Komaeda, even if Komaeda pretends that he is not manipulative.

If I were to see Komaegi in a nonromantic light, I can kind of see it. Like, I can see them as cousins, or brothers. I really love to think of them as platonic rather than romantic. I think it’s better that way XD

Nanaegi

4 = I could see why others like it, kinda cute I suppose.

It’s a ship I never considered before, I suppose? I can see why people would like it. Nanami and Naegi both have similar ideals, especially DR3 Nanami. However... I just don’t know how it would go. I’m unable to really see this as anything other than a friendship? It’s partly because I only ship Nanami with like two people (three if you separate the Kamukuras lol). I have a hard time thinking of Nanami in a romantic relationship with other people. Naegi, now I can ship him with a lot more people, but just not Nanami or Komaeda...

If anyone can give me Nanaegi headcanons, then I’d be more likely to have something to say XD As it is, it’s cute, but I just don’t ship it romantically.

Hinaegi

Somewhere between a 9 = I REALLY like this ship and it should be/is canon! and a 10 = One True Pairing (OTP). I will fight to the death for this ship.

Anyone that knows me well enough knows that Hinaegi is actually quite important to me. Before Hinaegi Festival last year, I was convinced this ship was nonexistent. There was barely any content, even in the Japanese fandom. However, for whatever reason, I really liked the idea of Hinata and Naegi together. seeing Hope Arc only strengthened that feeling! For years I despaired at the lack of content, grumbling and complaining that there wasn’t much support for this ship.

Eventually, thanks to encouragement from my friends, and noting a few other people were in the same despairing position as I was about the lack of content, I decided that it doesn’t matter how unpopular of a ship it is, I needed to spread the love for Hinaegi (and Kamuegi) because people don’t know what they are missing! As it turned out, there were quite a lot of people that were interested in these ships! I was expecting a small group of maybe three or four, and there ended up being a total of 17 participants, I believe! I was so very proud of everyone’s work and it felt good to see that we weren’t as small as we thought, that there were other people who cared about this ship too!

And I was so worried back then because nothing seemed to be going right, what with Rare Pair Week suddenly deciding to drop on the same exact days as the Festival, and Kam/koma week a week or two before. I was so worried that despite everything I could do to spread the word that Hinaegi Festival was coming, that it was going to flop... and I’m really happy that I was wrong.

I still am friends with some of the Hinaegi/Kamuegi community and have even run smaller events for the ship! We put it on pause just to make sure everyone would have the energy for the next Hinaegi Festival that is currently in the works to take place in July :D

Hinaegi has become so important to me over this last year. There’s a sense of balance in how I’d imagine Hinata and Naegi interacting, where they are very similar, but also have much different experiences in this talent-obsessed world. And the ways in which they can and will support each other makes my heaart flutter, honestly! I’m really grateful to Hinaegi, both because it makes me feel, and for the friends I’ve made through running a community based on it!
