Oct. 29, 2023
That's what the Detroit Pistons want, and now. They have officially arrived, and are announcing it loudly for all to hear: this ain't a game, this is a coup.
Their version of an NBA takeover started last year, but no one except them saw this coming. Just how they contend now is a little beside the point, and they know it. On some nights, it might be the MotorCade, others, it might be hungry-hippo-smash-button Jam King Jalen Duren's ignition properties. Most nights it will be a mix of both and more. A lot more. Winning basketball starts and ends with many things, because that's how winning programs work. Success by onslaught. These Pistons won't stop, because to them, they're already better than you, and they have every intention of acquainting you with their rapidly realizing fever reality.
They're done waiting for the right time to strike. They're in the trenches now. What is happening could have something to do with the full Monty effect, which no one could have predicted. The gob smacked onlookers have yet been able to pin it down with them, just ask around. But the naked truth is this: Detroit Basketball is suddenly good again. Scary good.
They've already proven there's no risk in overstating their future. Any two eyes can see their infectious cohesiveness and shockingly mature crop of otherworldly talent on display. They are poised to make a legitimate winning run this year and are primed for a fury of attack against any opponent, simply as they currently stand. If you sleep on them, you've already lost. Take it from their opponents in the last calendar year. The Pistons will win this season, and they already know who's up next once it ends; it's them.
Cade Cunningham is a superstar incarnate at 22, and he is back in the pulpit to preach. Through the bumps and bruises dished by the best efforts NBA defenses have been able to offer him thus far, he's looking healthier and beefier than his million dollar plant-based diet, and is seeking to lead this subset of grateful peers to their first victorious NBA season ever as players. He's a current top 10 player in the league today, although still too unproven to wear the title, and is a generational talent in the making right before us. There is but one thing on his mind.
In his first effort for us, head coach Monty Williams has them drinking something, and it's working. Still among the youngest players in the NBA, Jalen Duren is a, or is soon to be, the premier center in the entire league for his absurd out-of-the-gym athletics and stat stuffing two-way contributions. OG Stew, the emotional Captain of the ship in Isaiah Stewart, is the team's life-blood and enforcer; their low-key, cold-blooded, secret-weapon stud. The NBA wouldn't dare question him on that. Should he stay within the role and not exceed it, Jaden Ivey is exactly the banshee 6th man we haven't seen here since the days of Lindsey Hunter, Mike James, and Vinny Johnson before them.
Rookie starter Ausar Thompson was another huge jackpot for GM Troy Weaver, a job securing draft selection for him, and likely the piece that puts them full over. From the moment of first tip in 2023, Thompson has quickly revealed himself to be a defensive mastermind and a star. He does everything a winning team needs, and nothing it doesn't. Not caring to score but when the opportunity presents, he has a total double-blind commitment to the cause. For him, it's not just about winning, it's about taking pleasure in the dirty work. He is a Piston, after all. He exudes unselfish discipline that even veteran Champion rafter dwellers won't help but admire. Rip, Isiah and the gang must be losing it. He appears before us now as the second coming of Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace rolled into one, but with an offensive upside that evokes a young Scottie Pippin's finesse, toughness, and brilliance. He is our missing link, our difference maker, and he's ours.
Monty Williams might not have even had to glue this bunch together himself, as they apparently know their roles, and quite literally fight for each other, behind closed doors and against any opposition under the bright lights. They will not be taking no for an answer. Not these Pistons.
Did I mention the Pistons still don't have their leading scorer back, in Bojan Bogdanović? Time will tell the impact he is able to have with this new establishment pecking order. Bojan will have to answer to Coach and Cade upon his return; something he didn't have to contend with last year. His courtmates may have just exercised their natural right to make a talented but senior player like him completely expendable. The message for him is right now this: get in line, or just get out of the way.
Coach Williams comes to us loaded; with a scorching hot system, a self-assured voice, and most importantly, the bitterness of a too-soon playoff exit and abrupt firing after a Western Conference championship berth with his similarly stacked Phoenix Suns last summer. He's looking to rub some W's on the wound just to make a point. The betrayal trauma of the Ax from a club on the near cusp of championship level basketball seems to have ignited his current focus and vision, regardless of his new historic contractual arrangements with the organization.
They saw the glint in each other's eyes first, but now it's all in plain sight for us to see too.
Pick your angle with this group. They've been trying to tell us for a while. They also have a dynamic 3-point core that would make any GM cower to their knees. Detroit Pistons fans are currently witnessing a hostile shake down of the NBA. It's their world, we're all just living in it. They view themselves as a formidable threat to upset the entire balance of the NBA this season, and why not? On one hand, it's because they want it, but more importantly, it's because they can. We won't have to tell them otherwise, and we shouldn't. Whether they succeed this year is up to them and fate, not us, or the rest of the league. They're too good, and too young. They will run good teams ragged this year, if they can withstand the typical hyper-imposed fan expectations and seasonal adversaries that face any next big thing. The Pistons will be great sooner rather than later. The faces are new, but it's the same old Detroit Basketball we've always known and loved. IYKYK.
There's no reason to question the authenticity of their admission that they are singularly laser-focused on playing basketball the right way right now, and are going to do whatever it takes to take home the victory. They will fight, and they will rise and fall together. Again and again they've bucked the selfish play that sometimes clouds even excellent teams. They did that when they were losing too, remember. Success cannot change that ego is simply not a part of this group's DNA, but god given talent and a winning identity seems to be.
They are obviously here to make the mark of their bright, young lives, we just don't know how big the mark they'll leave is. However, we should consider that they might already know themselves how this should go. For now, they're content to plant their flag, and ready to lay waste on the battlefield with one of the most potent combinations of artillery in the NBA to back it all up. They're too dumb to be jaded, and likewise too inexperienced to slow down and consider the reasons not to be completely and utterly confident with every errant swing of the ball. Just wait until the Lakers and Bucks get a load of this high-efficiency bomb squad.
After nearly embarrassing Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat in their own home opener, everything they've displayed after that night has been a master course in perfect basketball, aside from the high turnover margin. That's to be expected though from teams doing whatever the hell they want out there. They're big, they're fast, they're relentless, and they play defense oriented team basketball with that same Detroit bred, blue collar "D" we know and love in this town. But above all else, they are gifted; and now they are sharing that gift with us.
Skeptics will spout, but the ring of truth is real. What fans at LCA are bearing witness to is quite possibly greatness out of thin air. This is the motherload we've heard about. The world will know it too, if they maintain their onslaught through the next week and the following. Troy Weaver and Tom Gores have made a perfect hire, and drafted a perfect group of kids. This is the vision, and the culture of the franchise is now immutably that of a winning one.
But will that change in the foreseeable future? It's hard to conceive of all this just vanishing, except by freak, career altering injury to one of the main cogs. But we don't need to think like that. Even the notion of something like that isn't deterrent enough to shake this eerie feeling, and it shouldn't. Cade is ready. Take his lead, just like Monty Williams and Jalen Duren have. The rest will follow suit. It's time to buy into his Pistons.
We've tried the free agent game here, and let's finally admit it; that has not and will never work in Detroit. But what has? Drafting smartly, making brilliant trades, and a little bit of luck and grit. On paper, this comeuppance both does and doesn't make sense. But that doesn't matter, because on the court, it does in spectacular fashion.
That's why they're different now. Everything has changed overnight in Detroit again. This happens in the NBA. It has to be the right cocktail for sure, but why not? The 2004, I mean the 2024 Pistons will have some playoff experience to garner before they can think past the Eastern Conference. We're clearly lucky, but come this and next April in the D, we'll know exactly how lucky we just got.
So it's true, they've done the unthinkable. They've actually captured lightning in a bottle, again. The Larry O'Brien Trophy is now locked in their foresight, and ready to be snatched by this rag tag squad of all-kill warrior bandits. They bear an uncanny resemblance to the likes of those Warrior bandits when they were at a similar point in their trajectory to greatness. The main difference though is merely fit, and not fury. It's a different puzzle with these Pistons, but it's the same kind of puzzle. Read it and weep.
There will always be supportive voices within the fan base and organization of any professional basketball team, but this core of assassins is already unequivocally better than anything we've had here in Detroit in over a decade. Better than Blake's, far superior to Reggie's and Andre's without him, these Pistons do what those groups never dreamed to flirt with; they just issued "hits" on every opposing team that dares to cross them, and they want your jewelry too. They don't negotiate, and there will be no survivors. Apocalypse be damned, the Detroit Pistons are now!

@anitadolcevita writes, in addition to resisting the NBA’s post- #maliceatthepalace racist dress codes, @WNBA players’ “style is also breaking binaries. According to @sportsillustrated , ‘Whereas once, not that long ago, WNBA players were asked to sit through hair and makeup classes at rookie orientation, now they are free to express their style as they want. They can, as a New York Times op-ed put it, ‘celebrat[e] and showcas[e] androgynous swag.' Prior to this shift, the WNBA was attempting to keep players from looking too ‘mannish’ in order to play up heteronormative sex appeal for marketing purposes. Today, WNBA teams like the Seattle Storm have partnered with TomboyX, a queer-owned, female-founded gender neutral line of undergarments.” See more WNBA looks and read more at link in bio: 📸 @gqsports @wnba #wnba #nbafits #leaguefits #queerfashion #queerstyle #dapperq https://www.instagram.com/p/CdgwXzNO3t8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

While Zion is off to an electrifying start, he must fix these holes in his game to get on LeBron’s level.
Once he fixes them, the sky is the limit.
Zion Williamson is the most exciting NBA rookie since LeBron James burst onto the scene 16 years ago. He came into the league with massive expectations, and he’s…

Fuck you Tucker Carlson. Racist asshole.
You're a White supremacist asshole, you are a fucking liar pretending to be reasonable, when you're not.
You even had that White Supremacist who wrote the Bell Curve on.
Fuck you and anybody who likes or supports you.

"Carlson claimed that protesters want to “take over your country, cancel your rights, take over our centuries-long tradition of tolerance -- yes, tolerance -- and of free expression.” [Fox News, Tucker Carlson Tonight, 6/9/20]" Centuries of tolerance, fucking lies, Jim Crow didn't end until the 1960's.
"Carlson called for protesters taking down Confederate statues to be labeled “domestic terrorists,” arrested, and paraded “in front of cameras like MS-13.” [Fox News, Tucker Carlson Tonight, 6/25/20]"
Why keep such statues up and oh yeah he defended keeping Christopher Columbus statues up.
"Carlson argued celebrating Juneteenth is more about finding “another way to humiliate and demoralize Americans” than emancipation.[Fox News, Tucker Carlson Tonight, 7/1/20]"
How does this demoralize anybody, first off???? Which Americans are you fucking talking about???????
"The training for learning to fly an airplane isn’t going to change because a Black person or woman is taking it, and there’s no reason to think that non-white men will be given license to fly planes without displaying the knowledge and skill it takes to complete said training. But Carlson—the guy who also doesn’t think women belong in the military, as if the thousands of women who serve in the armed forces wouldn’t likely beat his mother fucking ass—doesn’t believe that because, well, he’s a racist and misogynistic moron."
"Carlson isn’t the only fragile white man who is ignoring the fact that a historic lack of diversity initiatives in the corporate world is the only reason white men think they’re the face of meritocracy. Morgan—the guy who stormed off of a set like a little bitch-baby after being called out for using his platform to give off big incel energy towards Meghan Markle—wrote a whole-ass op-ed piece in response to the United announcement titled, “What’s next for the corporate woke warriors—blind pilots?”"
'Morgan wrote that when it comes to his concerns related to flying, “I certainly don’t care about a pilot’s gender or skin color,” because he clearly doesn’t realize that THIS SHIT ISN’T ABOUT YOU, WHITE MAN—it’s about creating opportunity for women and people of color to get jobs in a white male-dominated field."
"Morgan even went as far as to fake call out a fake double standard and asked why no one is looking to diversify the Black male-dominated NBA. (Yep, British Bill O’Reilly really went there.)"
"The truth is that Carlson, Morgan and every other conservative snowflake who clutches their whites-only pearls at the mere mention of the word “diversity” are just as fragile as they are racist and sexist."
"The world is changing around them and advocating that the corporate world reflect the diversity of the population, and now everything that comes out of their mouths is a variation of: “Won’t somebody please think of the white men?”"
"It’s pathetic, but what else can you expect from people who don’t seem to understand that diversity and meritocracy aren’t mutually exclusive."
“I do not care about their skin color, as long as it is white.”
"You know what you call a black woman who flies a plane, Tucker? A pilot. You racist piece of shit."
"ETA - FWIW, I looked up “Daily UK News,” because I wondered who the hell would publish anything by Morgan. It is not a real newspaper. It is basically a fancy link farm. That explains a lot."
"He does realize during WWII the government probably got people killed because they thought only white men could fly airplanes, right?"
"The guy in the middle was my high school principal Quentin “Q.P.” Smith:
He was a fighter pilot that transitioned over to bombers because he grew too big to fit in the fighters. He and a crap ton of black pilots were arrested because they entered the Officer’s club on base. Thurgood Marshall fought and won their freedom."
"My point is ALL of these men were accomplished pilots with minimum undergrad degrees and many with advance degrees in engineering, mathematics, etc. when lots of the white pilots that were allowed to fly (and enter the O Club) were crop dusters, some with little or no education."
"I didn’t mention the literal quota system that limited the number of black pilots that could graduate because they couldn’t have the black guys outperforming the white guys. The Tuskegee program had to wash out better pilots that were allowed to continue in the white ranks."
"If you want a meritocracy you are looking for diversity. White people, more often than most people of color, have connections and resources that get them opportunities that others do not. If you get more women and POCs up in the air my simple hypothesis is that competence will in no way diminish, and may in fact increase. Hopefully UA actually tests this theory and is not just blowing smoke."
White men didn't create civilization you fucking retard. Calling Iraqi people monkeys is bigoted. He automatically assumes that the CBC blames the White man for everything when that is not true.

Kevin Durant and JR Smith both liked Stephen Jackson's anti-semitic rant last year and he is still going strong with his podcast and saw no consequences from the NBA.
Kyrie (big shock) liked anti-semitic posts when he was on his flat earth kick, and routinely shares things about how "THEY" refused to recognize his ancestors as kings, with pictures of Pharaohs. The man needs to get a fucking grip FR but people ignore it cause it’s “crazy Kyrie being Kyrie”
DWade supported Nick Cannon when he got exposed for being anti-semitic.
Allen Iverson is a vocal and adamant Farrakhan supporter and current employee of an NBA team (if you don’t know who Farrakhan is google and hold on to your pants - the man calls Hitler a great man and is elated to be compared to him by Jewish people who call him out on his shit)
Plenty of NBA people liked Ice Cube's anti-semitic posts.
There is rampant, unchecked anti-semitism in the NBA community as a whole, which is why Kareem Abdul Jabaar wrote that op-ed about it last year, but no one gave a hoot about that either, an icon of the game speaking out on it. No one gives an actual fuck but this stuff going unchecked is how it all started and for people to deny it’s not a real threat anymore are blind as fuck .
this is honestly really sad. see when black people sit around talking about being the original chosen people and the true kings or real israelites and whatever i cringe so badly because it’s all based on really bad science and rampant hotepery that is plaguing my people. i’m so embarrassed on their behalf. i would think that the nba would actually do something about all this considering there are many jewish people who are owners/executives/etc, but i guess it’s too much money to risk. very unfortunate.

Elgin Baylor wasn't going to be the beginning of anything. He certainly didn't set out to be the beginning of everything: the superstar who saved the Lakers and brought them to the NBA, L. A.; the transcendent athlete who "reinvented everything but the rim game" and changed the geometry of the sport; the avant-garde innovator who was, in the words of legendary Hoops writer Bob Ryan, “the most influential offensive lineman of the last 60 years.” He was fair ... Let's go. Trying to use the tools at his disposal to put the ball in the hole, in any way he can.
“The way I played the game was just natural, " Baylor told Bleacher Report's Dave Schilling in 2018 . "I never sat down and thought about what I was going to do. I was just reacting to the situation, to the way the guys were guarding me. I've done things that people have probably never done before. I just instinctively did it.”
These instincts, combined with a considerable amount of skill, strength, and athleticism, have produced one of the greatest and most important players in the history of basketball. They sketched out a plan that generations of super-sports wing scorers would follow-and, in fact, still do.
They propelled Baylor, who died Monday of natural causes at age 86, through a remarkable Hall of Fame career that helped lay the groundwork for the NBA’s transformation into a nightly highlight factory but that, for several reasons, has never quite seemed to get its proper respect.
These days, Baylor is most often discussed in the language of ancestry and lineage. In the NBA’s creation myth, he’s a Promethean figure—an early skywalker who, in the years before frequent nationally televised games and widely distributed video footage, helped pave a path toward the sort of eye-popping feats we now see every night.
“He just might be the best player I ever saw,” legendary Lakers play-by-play man Chick Hearn once said. “He was doing things that Dr. Julius Erving made famous 20 years later, the hang time and so forth. But Elgin didn’t have the TV exposure. Nobody did in those days.”
Those who did see him, though, never forgot it—and learned from the experience.
“In basketball, you watch and emulate the things other players do,” Michael Goldberg, former head of the National Basketball Coaches Association, said in Basketball: A Love Story. “Once one player can do a ‘wow’ move, then every kid in every school yard tries to do that themselves. Those that can refine it take it to the next level, and so on down the line. I would say that Elgin Baylor begat Connie Hawkins, and Hawkins begat Earl Monroe, and Monroe begat Dr. J, and Dr. J begat David Thompson, and Thompson begat Michael Jordan, and Jordan begat Kobe Bryant, and there’s more begats going on.”
Off the court, he was a fearless trailblazer who fought against the racist, segregationist policies of the Jim Crow era. On it, he was a groundbreaking slasher who, as Ryan wrote in the foreword to Bijan C. Bayne’s 2015 biography of Baylor, took “a game that was essentially horizontal and occasionally vertical and [made] it diagonal.” He was a tradition-flouting talent, an improvisational creator constantly unlocking new possibilities.
“His ballhandling ability at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds made him a one-man revolution,” Bayne wrote. “He had all the fakes and a sure handle, and some of his spectacular plays culminated in twisting, hanging, or gliding near or past the basket. Yet, it was the combination of those elements—the yo-yo dribbling, the subtle feints, the knifing reverse layups between taller defenders—that set Baylor apart from his predecessors and peers. Where such players as Hawkins, Erving, and, of course, Jordan became known for their trademark dunks, Baylor scored on one-hand push shots, banks, floaters, and fallaways.”
Baylor had the deepest off-the-dribble bag of his era, and he used every trick in it to score a ton. He totaled 23,149 points over 14 seasons—all after entering the NBA at age 24, all compiled without a 3-point line—which made him the third-leading scorer in NBA history behind Wilt and Oscar when he retired in 1972. (He now ranks 36th on the all-time NBA/ABA leaderboard.) He averaged 38.3 points per game during the 1961-62 season, the fourth-highest single-season average in NBA history, while spending a large chunk of it as an active-duty Army reservist who could play only on weekends and when given special clearance.
There was a bitter irony in that: Baylor performing at an all-time-superstar level while on leave from serving a country that continued to treat him and people who looked like him as second-class citizens.
Two years earlier, on January 16, 1959, the Lakers were scheduled to play the Cincinnati Royals in Charleston, West Virginia. When they arrived at the Kanawha Hotel, the desk clerk took one look at them—specifically Baylor, Boo Ellis, and Ed Fleming—and told team captain Vern Mikkelsen, “The three colored boys will have to go somewhere else. This is a nice, respectable hotel. We can’t take the colored boys.”
Rather than submit to the discriminatory policy, the entire Lakers team left, staying instead in a motel that welcomed Black guests. Later, Baylor went out with his teammates to get something to eat, only to be denied service at a restaurant, too. An incensed Baylor decided not to play in the game, boycotting to call attention to the inequality and mistreatment he and other Black people faced in the town.
“I'm human, " he told his friend and teammate Hot Rod Hundley, who was white. "All I want is to be treated like a human being. I am not an animal that is put in a cage and released on the show. They won't treat me like an animal.”
The NBA and the Lakers stood by Baylor. From then on, the Lakers will require that there be no segregation clauses in their contracts when organizing games. Soon after, then-NBA Commissioner Maurice Podoloff " promised to make sure that such treatment of black players in hotels is a thing of the past when they represent the League.”
” Of course, I don't regret doing it, " Baylor said in a March 1963 sports magazine op - ed. "I'm not a trailblazer or anything, but I'm interested in my people and progress. My name is Elgin Baylor, and I don't want anything more than I have a right to.”
That perseverance is evident again at the 1964 NBA All-Star Game in Boston, when Baylor, Robertson, Jerry West, and other star players “barricaded themselves in the locker room and announced that they would not play unless they were guaranteed benefits originally directed by the commissioner last summer”—namely , improved playing conditions, athletic coaches on all teams, and a retirement plan.
“[Lakers owner Bob Short] said to an Irish cop that guarded the door, ‘Tell Elgin Baylor if he doesn’t get out there, he’s through,’” Celtics All-Star Tommy Heinsohn told Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times in 2011. Baylor didn’t budge. The stoppage worked.
“For Elgin, in particular, the Black athletes, they had to be crusaders in this league and in many cases were vilified for it,” West told Sam Smith in his 2017 book Hard Labor: The Battle That Birthed the Billion-Dollar NBA. “That day has always resonated with me as one of the seminal points of this league. … That day in Boston probably was the beginning of something that few could comprehend.”
Baylor represented an inflection point on the court, too. In the early years of the NBA, the run of play was dominated by towering post players like George Mikan and Dolph Schayes, or sweet-shooting perimeter playmakers like “Jumpin’” Joe Fulks, Paul Arizin, and Bob Cousy. Baylor split the difference, combining the bulldozing strength and rebounding of the league’s best bigs with the speed, quickness, passing, and shotmaking of its top guards, all in a bruising 6-foot-5, 225-pound package. You know how James Harden is sometimes described as being built like a tank? Baylor was the same size and, in his day, just as tough to stop; Knicks forward Richie Guerin, a Hall of Famer in his own right, once said defending Baylor was “like guarding a flood.”
The way Baylor moved could move people. Stylistic successor Julius Erving described it as “just ballet in basketball.” To Hall of Fame guard Charlie Scott, watching Baylor was “like watching poetry.” They weren’t alone in their hosannas; Baylor’s play inspired some delightfully creative and high-minded descriptions from the ink-stained wretches tasked with capturing his brilliance. One favorite: “When Baylor gets the ball, the opposition scatters like quail at the sight of the hunter.”
You can only earn prose that purple with pure production. Baylor is one of only four players to average more than 25 points and 10 rebounds per game in his career, joined by Chamberlain, Karl Malone, and Bob Pettit. Of that group, only Wilt delivered as many assists per game as Baylor, a heady passer who still ranks 20th on the all-time triple-double list:
Baylor is one of only 10 players ever to have at least 10 appearances on an NBA first team; only LeBron James, Bryant and Malone have more. Nearly 50 years after his retirement, his career scoring average of 27.4 points per game still ranks third, behind only Wilt and Jordan. He still ranks 11th in rebounds per game, and in the top 30 in player efficiency, field goals, free throws, and total rebounds.

He was, until very recently, on Bernie Sanders' celebrity endorsements list on the campaign website. However, on Feb. 20, 2016, Hillary Clinton tweeted a video of Ferrell encouraging people to vote with the message, "Will Ferrell has a message for you, Nevada: Caucus for Hillary today at 11 AM. Paul O'Neill

Trump pointed out O'Neill, who works as a broadcaster for Trump's YES Network, in the audience and asked if the former Yankee would endorse him. O'Neill responded, "I'm here."
Azealia Banks
In what can only be described as an epic political Twitter rant (read: series of tweets), Rapper Azealia Banks emphatically stated she would be voting for The Donald to "Put a piece of (expletive) in the White House." She added, "In conclusion, I think Donald trump is evil like America is evil and in order for America to keep up with itself it needs him."
Willie Robertson
Dressed in patriotic red, white and blue, television personality Willie Robertson from the show "Duck Dynasty" showed his support by introducing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump at the Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel's 16th annual Outdoor Sportsman Awards at The Venetian in Las Vegas, January 2016.
Kirstie Alley

James Woods Dunked on Lebron James So Hard He Left Him Dribbling
Tumblr media
Hollywood star James Woods just called out LeBron James for changing his tune about plans for an NBA boycott.
On Wednesday, reports stated that James was leading the charge in calling for a boycott of the rest of the NBA playoff games in a protest against racial inequality and police brutality. However, by Thursday, James had completely changed his mind and decided that he wanted his team the Los…

Tim Cook defends Apple’s removal of a Hong Kong protest app from the App Store https://ift.tt/30Zc7AZ
Apple has pulled the controversial HKmap.live app, which displays the location of police, from its app store following a critical op-ed in the People’s Daily, a Chinese state-owned newspaper. Apple CEO Tim Cook has defended the decision in an internal memo.
According to a report from Reuters, Apple based the decision on “credible information” from Hong Kong police, as well as from Apple itself. Reportedly, the app was being used “maliciously to target individual officers for violence and to victimize individuals and property where no police are present.” That constitutes a violation of App Store guidelines, according to the company.
When Apple originally removed the app, an Apple spokesperson stated that the app had been used to “target and ambush police,” endangering public safety as a result.
“We created the App Store to be a safe and trusted place to discover apps. We have learned that an app, HKmap.live, has been used in ways that endanger law enforcement and residents in Hong Kong. Many concerned customers in Hong Kong have contacted us about this app and we immediately began investigating it. The app displays police locations and we have verified with the Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau that the app has been used to target and ambush police, threaten public safety, and criminals have used it to victimize residents in areas where they know there is no law enforcement. This app violates our guidelines and local laws, and we have removed it from the App Store.”
The developer of HKmap.live has taken to Twitter to publicly disagree with Apple’s decision, stating there is no evidence the app endangers residents and police in Hong Kong.

— HKmap.live 全港抗爭即時地圖 (@hkmaplive) October 10, 2019
At this time, the HKmap.live website is still accessible from iPhone web browsers.
HKmap.live isn’t the only app to have been affected by Apple’s purge of pro-democracy apps. News app Quartz is also reporting it has been removed from the Chinese app store following alleged complaints from the Chinese government about Quartz’s coverage of the protests.
The controversy stems from an op-ed published in the Chinese state-owned newspaper, the People’s Daily. It launched an attack against Apple, warning the technology giant about the possible consequences of allowing the app HKmap.live, as well as other media that allegedly support independence for Hong Kong, onto its app store.
As reported by AFP, the op-ed in The People’s Daily takes aim at a couple of targets, including the NBA, but puts Apple firmly in its sights later in the piece. Accusing Apple of being an “accomplice to the rioters,” the article went on to warn that “Apple has to think about the consequences of its unwise and reckless decision.” That decision refers to allowing an app that supplies information about police activity and protests around the Hong Kong area.

The People’s Daily takes a particular stance on this, claiming the app allows rioters to avoid police and commit violent acts in other areas. This is a description of the app rejected by the app’s developer, who took to Twitter to point out that the app actually helps the police by highlighting “blue flag areas” — those areas where the police have temporarily deemed it illegal to assemble.

Just like Waze, people get notified of traffic cam ahead, so they can slow down. No one is breaking any law.
— HKmap.live 全港抗爭即時地圖 (@hkmaplive) October 2, 2019
It isn’t just HKmap.live that The People’s Daily has an issue with — it refers to the app as only being the tip of the iceberg. It also mentions an independence-supporting song being allowed onto the Apple Music store — most likely referencing the song Glory to Hong Kong, which has become something of an anthem for the protesters. According to the piece, the song was removed from the store before being allowed back on again.
This is unlikely to be the last we hear of the technological sphere mixing with the ongoing pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Professional Hearthstone player Chung Ng Wai was banned from the Hearthstone Grandmasters competition for using his post-match interview to support the protesters in Hong Kong. The Chinese government was also accused of running disinformation campaigns through Facebook, Twitter, and even YouTube.
Updated on October 10, 2019: Apple has pulled the HKmap.live from the App Store, and Tim Cook has defended the decision.
